    This is the RetroTINK 5X or RetroTINK 5X-Pro - a video scaler designed for retro games. With inputs for composite, s-video, component, and RGB SCART - this can do it all, including 1440p 6x output! But is it truly all we need?
    RetroTINK Official Store (LOTS more stock coming soon, do not buy from scalpers!) - www.retrotink.com/
    CORRECTION NOTE: The Framemeister does use Motion Adaptive deinterlacing, too, but out of the box the look is not great. It improves with profiles from FireBrandX, but I still prefer the RetroTINK's approach.
    S-video is NOT accepted via the SCART adapter, only composite.

    Good stuff! I love my 5x. It seems like in some of your comparisons, you could have had a bit more sharpness if you would have turned the low pass filter off. Although now that I think about, you did say your component chain is pretty noisy. Give it a shot though just in case. I run all my comp signals through an extron crosspoint and I never need the lpf on. Keeping it off adds a pretty damn noticeable amount of sharpness to the picture, and I never seem to notice any more noise than you would typically get from analog video.

    Great video! I will look into this in the future to play my classic classics. My only concern with one of the resolution switching, is that in Silent Hill 4, it seems the FMVs run at some resolution that doesn’t play nicely with it at all? I saw it on someone’s stream. I’m assuming though an update can be made to fix it, which is awesome.

    Great video, I've been using the 5x on my PS3 at 480p to 1440p with scanlines. Don't know why but I think it looks interesting especially PS1 and ps2 classics. Just a noob fiddling around having fun.

      @@EposVox me too! Like the beginning of this week. Just got an order for a 5X in earlier! I'm so excited! I got a lot to learn about streaming, I've only attempted it twice, so I will be checking out a lot of your videos!
      Do you have any interest in the Neo Geo CD? I teamed up with Phenommod (the official USA X360ACE seller) to make a batch of the Neo SD Loader, but I don't think we are well known enough and I think if we can spread the word, we will meet our MOQ goal!
      And LOL that "bob de-interlacing" joke you did.
      The comb filter will clean up video if enabled, not disabled. It's for composite really. You don't need it with RGB/YPbPr.
      For the Super NT, has it been resolved with firmware updates? Did you try the various vsync buffering modes?
      Also, please be careful with the RGB SCART hate. It's a perfectly good solution. YPbPr works best for some's setups, SCART for others. There had been too many people freaking out over the possibility that they made a bad purchase by purchasing some Retro Access e.g. SCART cables. I know newbies should probably just go component, but just be a little more easy on SCART, please. Even if you just add a lil tip that there's nothing wrong with it

    I need this upscaler. I have to currently use a combination of my retrotink 1st gen, with my ossc to be able to record Atari 2600. A lot of the games aren't programmed great, and a lot of upscalers don't like it at all, with some (retrotink by itself) not liking some games. The OSSC can handle more, but gets color bleed with the retrotink in passthrough mode. I feel like this is the device to make it the most compatible.

    Hey quick question if you don't mind. Currently have a 2X-M and will be grabbing a 5X during the next drop but I was just wondering which capture cards would you recommend now if I mainly plan on using them all in conjunction with a PS2 on a 4k tv? Thanks!

  • @YeaNaYea

    Question, sorry if this is answered already down in the comments but have you tried the passthrough mode with the elgato 4k pro? I'm curious of any issues when using the passthrough mode from the retrotink to the card and say hooking up to a main TV like a lg c9.

    I have been following all your retro specifications for creating a throwback weekly stream but fought with quality control. These videos are a huge help and although I see the 5x is sold out. I'll certainly find a way via ebay or whatever it takes to get one. But I'd never have found these without your video coverage. So I would like to say THANKYOU!

    Hi I've been looking into buying an LG CX and was wondering if retrogames are an issue in terms of burn in? cause of the 4:3 aspect ratio and the issue of static hud elements are more pronounced especially on games where a good portion of the screen is just a hud like in Rocket Knight Adventures for example.
    And a question about the 1440p output from the retrotink the LG CX takes the 1440p 60 signal correct? rtings says 1440p60 is a forced resolution so the fact that you're having no problems has me wondering if maybe they only tested with a pc and TV can take it in properly?
    edit: forgot to add that This was really great look into the product and your channel is really great resource for streaming games in general thanks for all that you do!

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Re:1440p - I had zero issues making that show up here. Both 1200p and 1440p worked out of box - but 1440p works via Xbox too, so I’m not sure why they had issue.
      Speaking of Rtings, they have covered the burn-in stuff far better than I could, but generally it’s not a huge issue if you’re not leaving the exact same UI elements up 24/7. It has pixel shifting stuff to counter-act burn-in and letting the TV rest when you’re not using it helps. And if you’re playing a variety of games (versus a singular game’s hud up nonstop) it shouldn’t really be an issue.
      4:3 doesn’t cause anything for burn-in as OLEDs literally don’t turn on pixels that are black so there’s nothing to burn in.
      Also thank you :)

  • @alg3898
    @alg3898 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course I chose the one capture card (Live Gamer Duo) that would explicitly have issues with the RetroTink 5x... But thank you for highlighting the issue to confirm I am not going insane. I was having one more issue with my Live Gamer Duo though, input 1 doesn't like 1080p inputs either, and I had to scale my Switch to 720p to make it work. Is that normal or is there something I can do to fix that?
    Regardless I appreciate this thorough overview of the device for streaming purposes and the editing is immaculate. Keep up the great work!

I switch to 1080p resolution on the device with RR Type 4 running on the PS2 and looking like complete trash. Like no improvement AT ALL. What could be the issue? 4:04 "Good thing SCART isn't worth addressing in the first place". Wait, what do you mean? >_< (confused)
    Good video. I'm bummed that 256 mode for SNES stretches the 4:3 a bit, as I was hoping this would let me capture SNES games as accurately and as high-quality as possible with my Magewell. I'm torn, 'cause I love Retrotink 5X's ease of use and it's Motion Adaptive mode for PS2 games is a godsend, but if I can't get everything I want out of this device, not sure if it's worth it for me. Still itching to replace my OSSC with something "better".
    Or maybe I should just cave in and capture all my SNES stuff with my Analogue Super Nt. But then what's the point of my RGB modded SNES Jr. I'm having a Retro RGB gamer crisis, as you can see.

    No more problem with emulators.
    Now regarding the price : don't cry and go to Mama... it cost us, in Europe, around 400 EUR, tanks to taxes and VAT.. so don't cry at USD 300 !! it's really a nice piece of hardware, and the development is still going on.
    By the way : do you really use your framemeister ? I don't .. No more updates and the black screen when the consoles change resolution (Hello saturn games....).. it's better on an OSSC....

      @@EposVox I have one Retrotink 5x, I tried the Svideo through scart and does not work. Look at the retrotink website and it says "RGB and Composite through Scart". Go and test it again and let me know. Otherwise the Scart converter that Retrotink sent me with the Retrotink 5x is broken.

      Nope, you are correct, I’ve clarified with Mike. Apologies for the confusion, adding a note to the description!

    i thought rgb scart was considered the best analogue image

      RGB analogue out itself is. I think it's the French Peritel connector itself that people would have issue with (since SCART was actually a TV manufacturer's association in France).

    Epos, I appreciate your attempts at navigating the algorithm and experimenting, but for me, at least, 30 mins is just too long for a video on TH-cam. I say this not as criticism but as a consideration for you, because I respect your work and the feedback might be helpful somehow. Perhaps if you did these longform videos while also providing the quick, >10min breakdown videos as well (using, even, the same videos, just edited?)

      This isn’t an “attempt at navigating the algorithm” - this is my proper review format that I’ve done for years and years. Very little could be cut, an entire 45 minute video was needed for even more context for those unfamiliar with the subject, and I make it as easy as possible to get in and out with on-screen and in-description timecodes if you just want a specific section.

    it is a great device and all but the price is absurdly high... I know mike worked hard on it and it shows but it is another framemeister at this point

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure! Only better than a Framemeister. So as good and appealing as the Framemeister was for a good ~6 years, the RetroTINK 5X will now be the go-to for top results for the next 6+
      Price is as cheap as he could make it. This isn’t his full-time job, he’s not selling them for massive profits.

      The 2X line is very affordable and gets you most of the way there :) if you want the best, you pay for the best. If you can’t afford the best, you pay for something close.
