Being completely honest, I remember I didn't like the 'hurts like brand new shoes' line the first time I heard it. I loved the rest of it, just not that one line, I thought it was kinda lazily thrown in there. After listening a couple more times, I then interpreted it as showing the contrast between two different worlds. For many people in a first world country new shoes hurting is horrible, but ultimately just a first world problem. The woman in her song is literally struggling and dying. Just like she says the same sun we lay under is burning her to death. That contrast is so amazing, and she puts it into words in the perfect way. This song is just so beautiful, and Sade is really an angel. This moves me so much.

In the eighties I was in my twenties, married with two young daughters, and a new home,I was pretty busy. I heard Sades singles on the radio and I always liked them but like I said, I was pretty busy. Once In awhile I would see her videos on MTV. ( When they actually played music).I was always taken aback buy her beautiful exotic looks and beautiful voice that no other singer at the time had then and present. No that I am retired my daughters got me a nice phone and showed me how to listen to songs on U tube. So one day I stumbled on to her again and I listened to some her main stream songs. The thing that really struck me is that she had so,so many songs that I've never heard of! I couldn't believe my ears! Has she ever sung a bad song or have a bad video? I think not. I almost cry when I listen to her songs. Her songs seems to touch the soul. And she is so classy. I could listen to her music all day long! Looks like I'll be ordering some of her Cds soon! I just wish I would have followed her career closer.But I'm so glad I found her again!

I went through something very traumatic at 18….and I associated it with this song in 1997. I finally made peace with this song last year and was able to hear it for the first time since then. It was the only Sade song I couldn’t hear. It’s now a peaceful quiet part of my past.

In the eighties I was in my twenties, married with two young daughters, and a new home,I was pretty busy. I heard Sades singles on the radio and I always liked them but like I said, I was pretty busy. Once In awhile I would see her videos on MTV. ( When they actually played music).I was always taken aback buy her beautiful exotic looks and beautiful voice that no other singer at the time had then and present. No that I am retired my daughters got me a nice phone and showed me how to listen to songs on U tube. So one day I stumbled on to her again and I listened to some her main stream songs. The thing that really struck me is that she had so,so many songs that I've never heard of! I couldn't believe my ears! Has she ever sung a bad song or have a bad video? I think not. I almost cry when I listen to her songs. Her songs seems to touch the soul. And she is so classy. I could listen to her music all day long! Looks like I'll be ordering some of her Cds soon! I just wish I would have followed her career closer.But I'm so glad I found her again!
