The scene with Silco pouring one out at Vander's statue was the culmination of his character. He finally understands what motivated Vander all those years ago. Silco sees all that he has ever wanted, the nation of Zaun, at his fingertips but it's going to cost him his daughter. He realizes Vander faced the same. Just like Vander, Silco is now giving up his life's dream for the sake of his daughter and it's a real enlightening moment for him.
"Is there ever anything so undoing as a daughter?" Jinx hears him but misunderstands. It isn't until she accidentally kills him that he lets her know he never would've given her up, not even for his dream. He was undone by his love for his daughter, like Vander.

You've probably been told this a hundred times already but I didn't see it in the comments. One of Joe's gripe with the show was how quick Jinx was able to recreate hextech so quickly. Jinx not only stole the gemstone, but also all their notes on the subject. And given the praise that Jayce and Viktor both give her grenade, its safe to assume that she would be one of the few that could understand from a tech point of view. This show is incredibly well written.

When Victor brought Jayce in on his plan to break into Heimerdinger's lab, I thought that he'd probably just realized that he needed Jayce's genius to finish his research, but ultimately planed to backstab him. After the time skip, I was certain that Victor was going to become the resentful mad scientist archetype who envies the fame that his partner receives while Jayce was going to become the asshole who hogs the lion's share of the credit for research he couldn't have completed without Victor's help. This series is 110% the product of something that no amount of money can buy - passion. Sure companies can hire top-talent for top dollar but you will never be able to buy their love and passion for a project. Such an amazing work can only be crafted by people that put their heart and soul into what they are doing. I'm failry certain that this really was someone's passion project (be it one person or a group of them). Think of it like this: it's understandable that to make an interesting character design, you'd have to think of his background or a theme. DotA kind of has it as well (although it must be said the character models were originally from Warcraft way back when DotA was a WC3 map), but they never went as deep as Riot did with LoL. I mean, it's a MOBA cybersports game that people play for the competetive reasons, so why bother really?
There was someone in Riot that had this thing in mind in order to stand out from DotA. They probably built the whole universe for that reason, and when designing characters, they didn't only think of a technical side of things, they worked on their backgrounds, themes, even their relationships between one and others.
Naturally, in a MOBA game where characters have maybe about 10 lines in total, this work would largely go unnoticed. But they had looked for every chance to show it - I believe that's why the Jinx music video has paralells between it and Arcane, and that video is almost a decade old! That tells me the idea of this story we'd seen in Season 1 was already made up by them way back when!
I applaude their passion and those people in charge who saw this thing for what it is and greenlit the project.

In regards to The Joes' criticism about Jinx being able to create the hextech device so quickly
The gem she stole took Jayce and Viktor 10 years to make, the purpose of that gem is that it's much more stable and easier to work with than the ones that she blew up in act 1. Add on to this that she stole Viktor's personal notes along side the gem, which she used as a guide line to utilizing its power. So yes, Jinx is smart, but she was definitely standing on the shoulders of giants when it came to her tinkering with hextech.

@@zenstrata Why is predictable even a negative term? One of my favourite things about this series might be that it was predictable. Let me explain: Just because a story is predictable doesn't mean it's bad. If that was the case, prequels wouldn't even exist. Hell, predictability can even improve the story as it means all the things they established and set up are paying off on the viewer. You can't have a good twist without at least having a chance of being predictable, otherwise you're left with a twist that had no set up or clues and leaves the audience shocked, not because it was brilliant, but because it gives the audience no other choice. I prefer the plot and twists of this show so much more than ones that sacrifice logic to try to do the most shocking thing in order to shock their viewers.

Something that I haven't seen any reviews tackle with this series is how it handles mental health - or rather how it shows that people don't deal with mental health. Jinx clearly has abandonment issues at a very young age, but people around her are constantly invalidating her feelings, making her feel worthless. For someone in that delicate of a mental state ALREADY, seeing her friends and adopted family die and realizing she is responsible for it, there is absolutely no way she WASN'T going to snap. As she says in episode 9, it wasn't Silco who created Jinx, it with Vi. It's another reason why this series hits so hard with the gut punches, because Vi only realizes that she was causing this sort of damage when it's already too late to fix it - something that is all too common with people who suffer from untreated mental health issues.
Jinx is a beautifully flawed character. Her personality as an adult is a sort of schitzophrenic with manic episodes. She acts like a pinball being tossed around - which mirrors her development, being tossed around from person to person, adoptive family to adoptive family. After all that she goes through, there's always that little spark of hope that she could come back. In a twist of irony, the thing that sets her over the edge completely is her love for Vi and choosing her over Silco. She gets to watch someone else who loved her die at her own hands. Having her sit down in the "Jinx chair" was a defining moment for her character. Finally she knew who she was, and you can see how her posture relaxes for pretty much the first time in that whole scene.
I cannot possibly imagine how they are going to top this season. I just can't. I am eager to see them give their best attempt, though.

I think there's been a lot of confusion about Mel's character and motivations. She definitely started out only concerned about the wealth and power. She saw Piltover's success as her own success and a way to shove it in her mother's face that the Noxian way is not the only way. When she talked to Jayce and Viktor about countermeasures, about weaponizing hextech, I think that was her way of saying they needed to make sure they covered their ass. I don't think she ever wanted war, she just wanted Piltover to be prepared in case it came to that. Then her mother came, seeking hextech weapons for the Medarda family to use, not really concerned about war as a byproduct. Her mother had her own way of doing things and she wanted to impose those methods on her daughter, Mel, and on Jayce. I do genuinely believe she wanted to see Mel and Jayce succeed and for Piltover to prosper, but I think she sees war as the only way for that to happen, plus she needs the weapons anyway. For her it's a win-win if she can convince them to fight.

I also want to ask. Does anyone feel that in episode 7 jinx was ready to die. There were many ways to blow echo up without herself getting hurt. I feel that she found herself as powder again "playing" with echo. This was the only time she isn't influenced to think of the others perspective in a sense. Echo wasn't persuading her to see his view. While jinx is constantly being reminded that either "everyone betrays you but me" (silco) and "i am here for you, come back to me as powder" (Vi). Silco and vi wanted thier version of powder/jinx. Echo was just seeing her as a person. So when she was being beaten she decides she is done. Maybe that's another reason to dislike silco as he kinda forces her to survive. Thoughts?

One of my favorite scenes in the entire show was the Ekko and Jinx fight scene in episode 7. If you look closely when Ekko gets the upper hand and is punching Jinx, you can see in her eyes and on her face that in this moment she is Powder. Her eyes change from blue back to grey (like they were when she was a child). And her face shows that she is scared, remorseful, and utterly broken on the inside. She has experienced so much pain as a child. I don't think that anybody would be able to remain sane after all of that pain. And I think that Ekko sees that. He realizes that Powder is still in there, trapped by Jinx. He can tell that in that moment it was Powder, not Jinx. When she pulled the pin on the grenade, it is almost as though she had given up. I think that she wanted to die on that bridge as Powder and not as Jinx.

exactly. you get hints of how into the detail they went with the little scenes, for example, how touchy and up close she is with Silco. this is because Jinx is mentally stuck at the age of 9 due to the deaths of her adopted family which also fits her in-game character. she is not being seductive or playful, jinx doesn`t understand personal space. and that`s a detail most writers would have skipped when writing characters with trauma. when people suffer trauma at a young age their minds will shut down any growth as a means to block the pain and protect themselves.

Regarding your skepticism of Jinx's ability to use the Hextech Gemstones (10:11): she's not using them in the same way as Jayce or Viktor. The writers show us that the gemstones are "explosive" if given enough blunt force, meaning she can basically use them as explosives. She simply created a rocket that can contain the gemstones... so not _that_ impressive or something that requires vast scientific knowledge. Meanwhile, Jinx's other guns (she has two): one uses regular bullets, the other uses Shimmer (since Shimmer is highly flammable, which we see during Silco's fight with Vander).
So no, she's not doing what it took two scientists to do after years of hard work and experimentation. Not at all, in any way. And even _if_ she was: Jinx is insane. Have you ever met an insane person? When they become fixated on something, they have the conviction of a God.

    • @Karanthaneos
      @Karanthaneos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Those aren't clichés, those are themes. A cliché would've been something like Viktor stealing Jayce's work from the very start, it's a possibility that's right there and is the fast and easy resolution to his introduction, but instead he goes back to Jayce, talks to him and encourages to pursue his dream. Making Viktor an asshole and mad scientist would've been a cliché.
Themes are what your story is about. I don't think 'magic goes wrong' is a theme, but more about how technology can be used and abused. How ideas that started with a well intended purpose can get twisted. This is demonstrated by the parallel scenes on episode three, while Powder is making bombs of the hex crystals, Viktor and Jayce are using it to further technology. Then on episode 4 it's restated when they're presenting the tools to Heimerdinger, and how they blur the line between tools and weapons.

The thing about Jinx is that she was ever smart, that's her strength, but it wasn't a trait much needed in the environment she was living in, where you needed to be physically strong. She's a crazy genius, and Silco knew that, that's why he trusted the weapon to her and not Singed.

    • @The_Isaiahnator
      @The_Isaiahnator ปีที่แล้ว

Good catch. I almost forgot Silco had another genius working for him. But you could argue that -- between the production of shimmer and the creation of the Frankenstein-esque, mech-like soldiers -- Singed had his hands full. It's not like Silco didn't trust him, but it's also a good catch regarding how much Silco values intelligence.
In one of the few interactions that Vander had with Powder (while he was serving her a drink at the bar), we can see that he has no idea how to engage with her. Silco, on the other hand, frequently encourages Jinx to cultivate her engineering talents.

Nice review, totally agree with it all. The music isn't always my taste either, but the songs in ep 3 and 9 are so beautiful ('Goodbye' and 'What could have been'). Also I think the reason Jinx managed to figure out the hextech stuff so quickly is because she probably also stole Jayce and Viktor's notes on that, you see her reading it I think. All the info about how to build the machine was probably in there, even her device (the one that seems to work) in ep 5 looked identical to the one Jayce and Viktor built in ep 3.

Like AJ, I love metal and shit too, but that doesn't mean I'm unable to enjoy other genres to go along with scenes. Like, I usually hate rap/hiphop, but Dynasties & Dystopia was amazingly fitting for the Ekko vs Jinx fight. But yeah, this series had quite a few very memorable tracks. Playground from ep1, Goodbye from ep3, Guns for Hire from ep6, and What Could Have Been from ep9 are all songs that I've looked up and listened several times after watching the show. The music gripe isn't a legitimate one imo. The Arcane musical choice was incredible.

This was a really good year for animation, invincible, castlevania and now arcane. I never expected them to outperform like they did.
Legit set and raised the bar. No drop in quality of animation, tention was handled perfectly in every fight, characters were handled so well and motivations believable and the plot just easily flowed and was so intriguing.
Only complaint I could have was some of the music not being right for the scene in my opinion for some moments but overall surprisingly solid.

Again, thanks to a friend who has an account, i was able to watch the remainder of the Arcane Series, first Season. It's definitely a very American / Western Culture style Animation, and a DAMN GOOD one too. It's also a very Mature Animation too; from the edgy compleity of the story, all the way to the diverse cast that are for the most part interesting and captivating; Heroes and Villains alike.
However, by it's nature, Arcane is also a Unique American Animation because it is so well made and well thought out, unlike other average Western style animations that are less well made or even merely mediocre / badly made. This makes it stand out more when placed beside other lesser titles. Such great works are few and far between.
By comparison, Japanese style Anime is very different. Not only are they more prolific, but the stories are more diverse, from light hearted comedies and slice - of - life stories, to edgier, fantasy / horror themes, to even historically based narratives. Seriousness and silliness can be found in equal measure in the genre. The result is that Anime has the advantage of offering a large selection of titles so that a LOT of Good ones are available to offset less popular titles.
So in the end, animations like Arcane are actually more vulnerable to declining in quality of the story telling. Arcane is like the rare times people have a chance to dine at an expensive fine - dining venue; few, and far between. Japanese anime is more like eating well at home where everything is less unique, but has the advantage of being served with love, and in the company of a loving family.
That's a shame since Arcane shows just what can be done with good writing and carefully crafter artwork over the trashy virtue signaling that forces itself on a less than enthusiastic audience. Even angry joe sees Arcane as a great eample of an animaton - game tie in rather than a great anime all by itself, which it is.

In regards to Alex not being surprised that Riots animation/music teams did so well with this:
I was personally incredibly impressed and surprised that these teams knocked it out of the park, because they've never written long form media before, let alone a TV show.
They had already proved they're excellent at short form animation and catchy pop songs, but telling a long form story such as this one is very, very different. Some of these people had never written TV scripts before this. That's insane to me, because they sidestepped so many pitfalls other high-profile shows fall into.
The dialogue and ability to understand how to tell a smart, in-depth, emotional story over the course of 9 episodes, were some of the things I was most impressed by with this team who had NEVER written an episode of TV prior to this.

What's crazy is, while this is THE best videogame adaptation, this also set the bar to unrealistically high expectations moving forward.
Up until Netflix's Castlevania series & Sonic's movie, I'd say the bar was like, ankle-high. Castlevania bumped the animation up stupid high, and Sonic bumped up the live action to not-as-high bars, but still up there!
But Arcane bumped the bar up to skyscraper heights. It's the shining example of what to do, and thankfully, it was done with love.
Also I do want to say, in terms of lore for these characters, most of the main cast that are playable characters have a TON of lore. Lots of intertwining blurbs with other characters, as well as full-on short stories. Some like Jinx have multiple stories too.
And then there's the card game Legends of Runeterra, where all character interactions have basically been lore-accurate.
So it's not like these were blank canvases, but yeah, actually seeing these stories develop with our eyes is so fucking cool.
I really, REALLY hope we start getting other areas as well. There's a war of tribes in the Freljord north, a "recently" re-founded empire of Shurima in the desert, the ever-growing imperialism of Noxus, the very anti-magic Demacia, the still unknown Void, an awesome power shift in the Bilgewaters with the pirate lords, the truth behind what those hex crystals are... UGH!!! So much, and I hope we get to see more.
