      Added to her abandonment issues, Powder is clearly somewhere on the spectrum. Mentally she's unstable, occasionally manic and very often depressive. Vi was her rock and kept her grounded, stable and validated. Being made to feel useless/abandoned by her was really the final blow.

    After that she sees everyone die because of her and she breaks down even more and Vi literally punches her while Silco comes over in a "loving" matter and even understanding because what they felt at that moment was the same and Powder felt like someone finally understood her and she decided to forget Vi because she felt betrayed and abandoned so i wouldn't call it forced tbh

    One thing that I wanna mention is Jinx's mental breakdown in episode 3. I love all the little hints that point towards her being incredibly unstable with the ending of episode 3 being what pushes her off the edge (Literally and Metaphorically). It was really well done.

    • @ARSD219
      @ARSD219 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You could call it "being pushed off the edge," but to me, it's the moment that jumpstarts Jinx's fall into madness.
      She has yet to utterly lose her mind.
      And when she inevitably does, we'll all witness the full extent of what she has become.

    • @vincentgraymore
      @vincentgraymore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes and no. To me, the descent into "madness" is almost always portrayed too quick in fiction. Unstable people aren't always unstable to serve a "plot" in real life, but often are in fiction. The same is reversed, as they are not stable when things are supposed to be stable. We do see some of her alone time having fits, but not really that much for an extended period of time to understand that this is actually innate and not just nature. They try to show us by referencing things and her having the style of "ugly graffiti and liking ugly robot things".
      This said, I think the trigger event worked great. I just do not want to get another joker. I never saw Jinx as Harley or Joker, but people expect "madness" to be mastermindy with certain character traits I find tiresome.

      @bartoszbartosiewicz1123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@vincentgraymore I think it was done resonably well, they set it up by showing that Jinx is aware that she is a burden to the group after their raid in 1st episode, it's obviously rough for children this young to handle living is such conditions with your parents dead and your older sister being so much better than you, the only thing that seemingly holds her together is Vi putting trust in her.
      The moment in EP3 where Vi tells her she cannot go with them because she is not ready is more important than most people realize. Powder is aware that it's mostly her fault that things are like that (she found the crystal that blew up Jayce office and got enforcers to underground), she also gets told she isn't ready which is huge hit for her since Vi allways told her that she is capable, we can see her having a breakdown and only comming to her own when she thinks she can save the day by making bomb out of crystals.
      Then the ending, she knows that she fucked up massively and killed her friends and Vander, Vi is mad at her, calls her Jinx and tells her she is a fuckup. That must be devastating for kid this young, it would even explain why she hugged Silco.
      Overall i think they did extremely good job setting her up as a character considering only 3 episodes that werent even heavily focused on her.

    Just finished Episode 6. The believability of the characters really sells it. If that didn't work, nothing else would. The animation goes a long way in conveying their attitudes and motivations but if the writing was weak then it would all have been for nothing. The characters act so natural in their individual personalities and mannerisms while living in a world where people actually work, sweat, hope, sleep, fight, fall in love, bleed, fuck, cry, die and make both irrational and rational decisions and at no point is the viewer constantly asking, "But why didn't they just do this?" because their actions always seem consistent with their characters.
    Early on Powder hears Vi say something that turns into a misunderstanding but it isn't used as a lazy plot device - they resolve it almost immediately after because of course they would. Jayce seemed set up for being pulled so far into Piltover politics that he forgets Viktor but NOPE - he actually stands with Viktor in defying Heimerdinger, who himself is also guided by understandable motives and wisdom (but also a stagnated worldview) as afforded by his extended longevity compared to humans.
    The characters are doing the best they can within their respective circumstances, for the most part they're making decisions based on what they think is right and not going out of their way to be assholes. And despite all of that, you still have conflict because that's how the world actually works. Most fights don't happen because one side is moral and the other is malicious, they happen because people have divergent interests and interpretations of what's right or wrong.
    And Arcane actually gets that.

    The reason why Jinx just instantly hugs Silco is because she's already really unstable and traumatized. When you're that young you can't fend for yourself, their natural instinct is to find anything that will protect him so that they can be nurtured. That is the reason why she instantly holds onto the one thing that will protect, although I do agree that having Silco say something to her first before she accepts him would've been nice.
    A lot of small things in this show can be forgiven because it's still in the realm of reasonable, and everything else around it is just so damn amazing.

      Powder was already traumatized by her parents death and I would assume has a fear of being alone. And through the series, we are actually not 100% sure if Vi is Powders’ sister by blood or through being taken in by Vander (so theyre a little family together with Mylo and Claggor). Then with most of her new family members dying, partly by her own hands. That mustve been devastating for the age Powder was by the end of Ep.3. Personally, with that taken in mind, I think it might’ve been irrational that Powder hugs Silco. But given the trauma of losing her family twice, and thinking Vi has left her alone too and at that young age, its not unthinkable. Irrational maybe, but not unthinkable.
      (when Powder was freaking out when she was told to stay alone, I think that reflected her trauma. and she realizes that if Vi does not succeed in saving Vander. she would have no one left. which unfortunately pushed her to ‘help’.)

    Played like 3 games of league, actually a dota player. Love the league world and what they do for their characters, cool to see how such a crazy and wild character like Jinx has become essentially a fan favorite overnight. Huge credit to the writers and planners who were bold enough to have her do what she does in Episode 3 and really give us a look into her mind and why things turn out the way they do. Jinx is really the pinnacle of a tragic character, its just so cool to see someone actually do some real character work and make a good plot like the one between the two sisters. Also really cool how this ties into the game, and to hear some of the stuff like when fiddlesticks says in game to Jinx "Jinx! all your fault! all your fault!" and when Caitlyn says "Piltover may be better off without you jinx.... But Vi....." its just heart-wrenching and thats just more evidence of good writing and a great story to make you really feel for these characters and what they've gone through. Also just some of the stuff Jinx does just steal the show, the little "hi" she gives when she steps out of the smoke and we see her grown up for the first time is easily one of my favorite moments in all of media, just a perfect introduction and made her easily one of my favorite characters ever, they just absolutely nailed it with her in particular and i can't say enough about it and how much of a delight it is any time she's on screen.

    Just to touch on what AJ was talking about here: "The Games" - as in Summoner's Rift, the game map that League of Legends takes place on - are officially non-canon. The lore used to be that on Runeterra an order was established called the League of Legends. Any time a conflict arose between different nations (i.e. Noxus and Demacia), rather than a brutal war breaking out the conflict would be decided by The League. Special mages from the opposing nations called Summoners would be allowed to chose a single champion to represent them. Those champions would be bound to the orders of the Summoner. And thus a match of League of Legends would play out.
    But they reworked the lore a few years back, came out with a LoL Universe website, and said the old lore about the League and solving conflicts with LoL matches was out.
    TLDR - to answer AJ's question: no, the actual game itself is no longer part of the world's lore. It's basically on Overwatch rules now, the story has absolutely nothing to do with the game. One neat thing, though, is that characters that have intertwining lore do have unique voice lines that they'll say to each other in the game.

    The series is literally 10/10 and an emotional roller coaster.
    By the way all 4 of the kids are adopted orphans. So they aren’t just friends they are family.
    I’m not sure if you guys pay close attention to characteristics of characters. Powder was already showing signs of being unstable specially when she was alone in her room. Even at the start you could tell she reacts different from Vi. Her suddenly hugging silco perfectly makes sense because she is no longer stable mentally.

    I know you said the transition seemed a little fast, but I actually think the impulse was set up really well with the way they showed Powder being completely dependent on someones approval. From powders perspective it seemed like Vi just abandoned her, and did so in a brutal way. Couple that with her being a kid, longing to be validated, and more importantly realizing that everyone shes loved has been either killed by her or angry at her, she felt so alone that when she just saw silco, she went straight for him because that loneliness hurts more than what ever she thought of him. Just my 2 cents.

    Regarding Powder hugging Silco... That behaviour is correct.
    There was once a tiny baby possum running around my yard during the day, which is not when possums are suppose to be out. I let it go, but kept an eye on it, hoping it would go back to its nest.
    I noticed some birds and especially a couple of big magpies started pestering it. I went out to stop the magpies from killing the baby possum.
    When I got close and squatted down the possum jumped across the grass and leapt onto my chest, nestling into me.
    When I told the wildlife rescue person she told me thats what baby possums do in that situation... jump and latch onto the biggest person/mammal for protection.
    Powders reaction to Silco was instinctive for her own protection.

    On the subject of Powder jumping into Silco's arms at the end, i agree that I was weirded out by it the first time, but after thinking about it a bit, I now think it makes complete sense.
    Watch out for the wall of text bellow.
    Now Powder is about 7 in this arc, and I think that parents will agree with me that children that age are quite impulsive and irrational. Not to say it in a deammining manner, but more about the fact that they are generally confused about their emotions and it is a time that proper guidance is primordial in shaping the mind of the child.
    She does cry that she felt abandonned by Vi, which is valid. Back to the points where childrens that age are irrational, she never saw Vi leaving her as an act of protection. She was left behind, she wasnt part of the group, that is what she thought. She didnt see the danger or the consequences of her going there. She just saw that she had to prove herself to the group to be included.
    Now after the bomb, in that moment, she just came to the horrific realization that her act caused the death of 3 family members. She begins to cry and begs for forgiveness, she is panicking. Now I recognized this mental state all too well, I've seen it in childrens, I've lived it when i was young, and i bet most people can relate to a similar experience when they were young. Not exactly to the point were you killed a family member, but an experience were you hurt someone dear very badly. In that panic state, all you want as a child is for others to accept your apologies, validate your emotions and you need someone to remind you that they love you still.
    Now Vi is angry, of course given the situation, hits her, insult her and abandon her. Any parents will see that any of theses actions is ground for some famous and impulsive "I hate you!" Between sibling and usually requires talking it through to reconcile. Powder cant get this, she's alone.
    Now comes Silco, a man that she doesn't know, she didn't see him before, so she doesn't even know he was the one to abduct Vander in the first place, that knees down to her level and talks in a very calm and reassuring tone. Exactly what she needs, so of course she jumps at the opportunity of warmth and hugs him. He then proceeds to give her love, care and understanding in a moment when she needs it most and even validates her hate towards her sister.
    By giving her everything she needed in that moment, he gained her trust big time, and then he can manipulate her at will over the years to come.
    I dont think it was intentional on Silco's part at first, but he definitely saw an opportunity on which he could capitalize on, when she hugged him.

    • @Karanthaneos
      @Karanthaneos 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Media has a long history of not knowing how to portray young kids. The scene feels off because of how used we are to such depictions, but when you stop and think about it then you begin to understand how much effort the whole team put to make something truly outstanding.
      I don't think he intended to manipulate her, you can see in Silco's eyes how he sees Vander's corpse, and reacts to Powder's "She is not my sister anymore". They were both 'abandoned' by their 'siblings', so it's only natural for Silco to show some empathy for the girl. The same empathy that would later on prevent him from giving up on her on episode 9.

    To respond to what AngryJoe was saying around 22:35...
    I would say that the scene where Powder runs up to hug Silco in response to what previously happened with Vi is almost a foreshadowing or symbol of how messed up she really is mentally, even as a kid. In following episodes, as Jinx gets older (spoiler alert), she starts to hear multiple voices in her head clearly portraying signs of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, most likely the latter. Powder running up to hug Silco showed me that not only were her emotions showing volatility, but also her conclusions about people she cared deeply about.

      “Tell you you’re the greatest, but once you turn they hate us” embodies almost every characters relationship in the series. Vi + Jinx, Jayce + The council members + Mel, Jayce + Heimerdinger + Viktor + The creepy old guy making shimmer.

  • @NightravenNevermore
    @NightravenNevermore 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I didn't see it mentioned here in the comments (for the brief period I looked) but for anyone else curious, Summoner's Rift (the map you mainly play on in game for League of Legends) does exist in the lore, but the game itself (the champions like Vi, Jinx, Caitlyn, etc) fighting each other, doesn't exist in the lore (it used to, but was retconned out several years ago.)
    Summoner's Rift was the site of the Rune Wars which took place a loooooooong time before when Arcane takes place. It's most likely what Heimerdinger is referring to in the show when he mentions "seeing magic corrupt/destroy" and it flashes back to an image of a mage floating in the air. The Rune Wars was a massive event that took place between two factions of mages fighting over the World Runes. The war eventually spread across everything and a lot more people got involved than just the two factions. You can think of the World Runes as pretty much magical stones capable of terraforming. I think the only two we know about are one that was capable of melting earth and creating giant spires of lava and and reshaping the land, and another which was capable of creating or wiping out oceans.
    The other map in League of Legends, Howling Abyss, also exists in the lore but is literally just a bridge in one of the regions, the Freljord. So if anymore shows get made, they're more than likely going to be 100% about the lore and not the game, as making a show about the game wouldn't involve the lore at all.
