    Fuel Injector Replacement How to. My 1999 Toyota 4Runner was showing a cylinder misfire in cylinder 4 and then in 1. It was only occurring after the engine had warmed up. Initial startup and driving in the morning would run fine and then later on in the day it would start misfiring, check engine light would come on and the engine would be surging. Turns out when the bad fuel injectors get warmed up this will occur. Very similar to either spark plug, spark plug wire or ignition coil issues except that it occurs more frequently after the engine has warmed up. This video will instruct on how to fix the issue
    Thank you everyone for the support and watching our channel.

    Your video was insanely perfect. It was exactly what I needed. Great fast instructions that were to the point without a lot of B.S. but enough precautions to keep a guy from cracking aluminum. Thank you so much. This is my go to vehicle and I only had one day off to get it back on the road.

    Great video, thanks for taking the time to document this. I had a check engine light up on my 97 tacoma with the same engine about a month ago when it started misfiring. Hooked it up and it said a misfire on cylinder 3 so I replaced the coil pack and the misfire went away and the light went off. Now though my truck feels down on power and is idling rough after its warmed up. After watching your video I'm pretty sure I have at least 1 injector going bad. I'm going to replace all 6 once I get my tax refund.

    Awesome A+ .....Thank you!!! Just finished doing the driver side 3 injectors last week and it's not too bad. I just took my time and label the hoses as they came off . took the throttle body out just as you showed in your video. then took off the upper and lower plenum. I took a piece of card board and drew the pictures of each plenum and punched holes where the screws and bolts went and put in the bolts and screws. once I replaced the 3 injectors and put them back, I just replaced the screws back based on my drawing. I ordered Toyota OEM injectors from the cheapest Toyota dealer online in Massachusetts (EB TOYOTA-BochToyota). I am hoping it will be a while before I start messing with the Passenger side injectors!

    Dude, your vid saved my bacon and a ton of cash. It took about 3 hours to disassemble but only 30 minutes to put it all back together. The only thing I forgot to do was replace the crush washers at the banjo bolt on the rails. I learned that when fuel started jetting out and I torqued it as much as I could but I still get a small dribble on the even number cylinder rail. Now I just need to replace all the vacuum hoses and my fuel filter is completely rusted bolts and line, so that is a whole other project 🤦🏻‍♂️

I replaced spark plugs, spark wires, all ignition coils (OEM), MAF (OEM), charcoal canister with purge valve (OEM), gas cap, catalytic converter, thermostat and still getting the misfire codes. Perhaps fuel injectors are next 🤞🏼

    Here's another tip for those who don't have enough torque and a simple one.
    Whenever I use a wrench/socket and I know it needs some good power to initially break it loose, I would use my mallet (rubber hammer) to give it a nudge. Importantly, I make sure the wrench/socket is seated all the way flat beforehand.

    This is one of the last things it boils down to. I just spent about 1200 bucks in parts and labor, and I did two of the jobs myself for coils and replacing the IAC valve. Idle is improved, but it still misfires. I've been dealing with this it feels for half a year. I just learned about injectors which I didn't think of and it seems to be my issue. And it was mentioned by a shop as a suggestion the other day.

      @CaptainFALKEN you can also pull the Injectors and have them sent out to be cleaned, blueprinted, and tuned. I have pulled my injectors and sent them out, and most were running at 70-80% and 1 running at less than 50%. RC Fuel Injection in Torrance Ca specializes in blue printing and cleaning injectors. Their turn around time is a couple days also with fast shipping. They also include all new gaskets and seals for all the injectors. I was recommended this place from friends who race their cars, and they mentioned even brand new high performance inj and oem inj can be out of spec, so they have to have them tested.

    Your vid is gold! Nice editing leaving out dead time. I have a 99 Prerunner I bought new(now has 206K miles on it). I was driving back to my house and all of the sudden it was like I was driving on rumble strips at 60 mph. I pulled over to make sure wheel bolts were not loose, I didn't know what was going on. I got home and found out number 5 is not firing. I bought one new coil, switched them out. But I know they all fire because I can pull the wire with the coil on them and hear and see the spark on each one. I changed all the plugs and they were all dry, I thought the one not firing might be wet or look different but no, they all looked the same so seems like an injector(?) It also runs perfect, runs great since I changed the plugs, they had 100K on them. But yeah, it's starts missing when it's warmed up for a while. I have my injectors coming in the mail. I would be real intimidated to do it myself but your vid gave me a lot of confidence that I can do it. Thanks a lot! btw if one coil was bad, would it mean 2 pistons wouldn't be firing since each coil controls 2 plugs?

      In a weird way I'm kind of looking forward to it now. I have a question, when the fuel rails are out, is it best to install the injectors in the rail first or to the engine first? I read all comments but nobody asked.

    • @FreedomCrawler
      @FreedomCrawler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      scolopede I don’t think it matters but for me it was easier to put them in the rail first and then line every thing up from there

    • @scolopede
      @scolopede 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm only posting this because it might help somebody else out. Original problem was that #5 wasn't firing. I received 6 refurbished injectors and started taking things apart, it was a little rough for me the first time, not knowing what I was doing. So I put it all back together and did a test run around the block, I didn't think I was going to make it back to my driveway and when I did, it died, right as a pulled in. I checked the hoses over and over again, it was all where it was supposed to be. So I thought I might have some bad refurbished injectors and that if I put the old ones back in, it would work like it did before I started. So I took it apart again, much easier the second time. I put the old injectors back in but I left the refurbished injector in #5 in case it was a good injector. It worked but I still had one misfiring piston. I was fired up about that because I was getting desperate and narrowed the problem down, getting closer and I needed my truck working. It was #5 again, not firing so I bought a "new" injector. I took plenums off again, soooo easy a third time, and put the new one in. It's running perfect now, it hasn't run this well in some years. I cleaned the old ones when I had that out also. I had a bad experience with bad refurb injectors so I'm going new if I have that prob again and might be good to get an injector tester.

    Ha! Im glad i found this vid. Described all my symptoms almost to a T. I just cleaned iac valve and it was gummed up. Helped my idling a bit but i still had the symptoms (i accidentally left a coil unplugged and had a p1300 saved in my history so i was freaking out about that for about a week before the code cleared) just today i changed the fuel filter and the fuel coming from the tank was clear but the fuel from the filter was coming out contaminated. It runs even better but now im thinking the fuel injectors may be dirty. I am now confident i have my issue and im going to run some cleaner through it for a while and see if i cant go the cheap route. But if i have to change or clean any i know how to do it now. Hey buddy - just to let you know, this is the best video on line of the injector replacement. Everyone else's is full of extraneous nonsense, so good job on that. I'm about to do the same thing today on my 97. One thing which I noticed you did NOT mention when diagnosing the problem was doing a compression check on the misfiring cylindars. (Can borrow a gauge from O'Rielly for this). Any reason you chose not to check compression? Glad to hear it's still running strong.

    Great Video - very helpful. So here's my issue - I have a '99 4Runner SR5 with 253K miles. I started with a Code P0171 (Lean Bank 1) coupled with misfire on cylinder 2. I decided I would go ahead and replace all injectors (new Denso injectors) and I replaced the fuel filter. After completing the job I got a P0172 (Rich Condition Bank 1). I thought perhaps the TPS or MAF went bad, so i replaced them both with OEM. Condition persisted. Next I replaced the ETC (Temp Control) near the passenger fuel rail. Condition persists. I'm stumped. A Rich condition could be a plugged return fuel line (which I verified it was not plugged). I had already replaced front O2 sensor 3 months ago, so I thought rear O2 sensor was bad - I unplugged it, reset computer and code returned almost immediately, so it's not the O2 sensors. I think I may have a stuck injector. Any ideas would be most appreciated. I have no idea how to test each injector.

    • @FreedomCrawler
      @FreedomCrawler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question. There’s some good videos out on how to test injectors but I have never had to personally do it, what I would probably do was swap the injectors on each rail with eachother. If the code follows the injectors then you know it’s an injector issue. If everything stays the same then you can most likely rule out injectors. That won’t work if there isn’t two banks, one coming off each set of cylinders though. If that’s the case then testing the injectors individually may be your best next step

    +Freedom Crawler excellent go-through. I'm getting intermittent misfires on Cyl 1, wires and plugs are fairly recent. So, I replaced 3 coils thinking I had it in her bag (15 minute job)...still getting the misfire. That intake plenum is a mound of metal, so I've been fairly avoiding a few things until now. Question: While you have the intake assembly off, beyond a good cleaning inside, what else would be easily accessed to replace with that area clear? I'm considering valve cover gasket. You mentioned fuel filter, but I didn't see it replaced...anything else you'd do if budget wasn't an issue that week?
