    Hey man I really appreciate this video. With the GGD sale going on this week I've been on the fence of OKW: Metal or just going Invasion + Smash and Grab. I've had Modern and Massive for a long time but I don't have the full time to sit around and mix it and fully study into it because of work. This video really is helping me see how much work OKW could help me moderate so I don't sit on songs for months and release more consistently.
    Thanks so much for this upload! Cheers!

    The thing I've noticed with less processed samples, like Superior Drummer and GGD Invasion, is that you really have to know what you're doing in order to get the best out of them. Otherwise, it's better to just stick with more processed sounds like EZ Drummer and One Kit Wonder. I've been recording and mixing my own music for about 10 years and still don't really know what I'm doing, so I stick with processed drum samples.

    Great demo and comparison! Both sound great in their own rights but are still pretty different.
    For getting a great sound right out of the box, Metal does it better. Invasion on the other hand has much more customizability and room to experiment with. Invasion also works much better if you want to go for a more dry or "raw" sounding mix/tone (think Monuments/old Periphery sound). Metal on the other hand would fit much better in a more modern and tight sounding mix (basically most major metalcore/djent/prog albums in the past few few years).

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fully agree. If you like the okw sound then you’re gold. If you don’t or your tastes change, then you’re sorta stuck with it. Thanks for watching, cheers!

  • @GaijinMo
    @GaijinMo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for the comparison Scott. I'm a beginner to all this, and I'm wondering if it's possible to EQ the OKW snare to reduce some of the body and increase the "crack" so that it sounds more like your Invasion snare. Given that the Vinnie Paul is a 8" wood snare, maybe it is difficult to do that.

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could try, but I find when you overuse EQ to get something to sound like it's not you end up getting something that sounds over-processed (not just drums but anything really). I find the best EQ is subtle. With that said perhaps a bit of EQ and compression could get you where you want to go. I opted not to use the VP snare in my Invasion demo as I am not a huge fan of how it sounds in Invasion, but I think it sounds great the way it's processed in OKW. Thanks for watching!

    I wish they had released OKW:Metal a year ago, I bought invasion last Jan, and with no production knowledge at all I had to learn everything from scratch and I finally got the kit to sound really good after many months, I just bought OKW and after a few tweeks had the kit sounding really good in 15 minutes. I think both kits are great, but why would you want to buy something that takes a ridiculous amount of time to sound good when you can buy somthing that sounds good almost immediately? The only thing that would make sense for GGD to do from now on would be to release kits that have more interchangeable instruments that are already pre processed.

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the pre-processed kits are great don’t get me wrong but if that’s not the sound you want you can’t really undo what’s already baked in. So OKW libraries are great and have their place, but they aren’t for everyone. Something like Invasion is awesome if you want a good foundational starting point and have the time/knowledge to do your own processing to build a unique drum tone. But I do agree some version of OKW where you could swap out snares or other drums would be pretty great. Thanks for watching!

    • @crysalistwo189
      @crysalistwo189 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OKW Metal is really great and absolutely worth it! However, in the long run, the Invasion would probably do you more justice since Invasion is a lot more customizable and has a lot of variety in genres other than metal. It actually isn’t that hard to process it since it sounds pretty good without processing.

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OKW Metal is totally worth it in my opinion if you want to just get started with some great sounding drums. But Invasion is pretty awesome and not that hard to wrap your head around once you give it a chance. It's a great foundational sound, and with Turbo on it takes some of the guesswork out of it. But if you learn a bit about compression and EQ you can really make it shine and customize it to your liking. I will probably start using both of these kits regularly and likely blend them. The kick and especially the snare in OKW Metal is amazing. And I love the toms and cymbals in Invasion.

    Cool videos man. I own invasion.
    I noticed that the okw metal use one of the same snare trigger like in invasion. Probably a different shells with the snare isn't as high tune as invasion and the cpu usage with turbo in invasion is just insane lol

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ya the snare in OKW Metal is the Vinnie Paul sig, which is also one of the snares in Invasion but they definitely sound different between the two libraries. And yes invasion full turbo is crazy on CPU but to be honest I find OKW is really heavy on my cpu as well.

    @marcpeiron_studio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great comparison. Yeah, both are good but once processed Invasion is still winner for me, specially regarding cymbals.

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the cymbals on Invasion are done really well. As good as OKW is, the cymbals (especially the china) are not as good. With a bit of extra EQ and Compression on the cymbal channel though I can bring them up in the mix a little nicer with OKW, but for this demo I wanted to just showcase the out of the box sounds with OKW. Invasion has more round robins (8 for kicks, 9 for snares, 7 for hats and 6 for rides) but fewer velocity layers (9 for kicks, 11 for snares, 6 for hats and rides), OKW metal has far more velocity layers (12 for kick, 18 for snare, 11 for cymbals) but only 5 round robins for each piece. On top of that, the softest velocity layer in Invasion still hits pretty hard (for soft hits), which limits the dynamics of ghost notes and rolls in Invasion, OKW metal, due to its limited round robins, will sound like a machine gun if you program tons of ghost notes/16th notes on one piece at fast tempos - for example, try groove 8 of song 1 in the Progressive Fusion groove pack and listen to the hats, big yikes.
    Conclusion is neither is good for formal releases and productions because they simply don't sound realistic and dynamic enough, however, given how lightweight they are (especially OKW, takes less than 500MB RAM with one instance), they are fantastic tools for songwriting, demo sketching and capturing quick ideas. I use GGD for writing and demos, also triggers, but for productions, Superior Drummer 3 is still the big gun. Good to have both in our arsenals though, different jobs, different tools.

    • @ScottBynoe
      @ScottBynoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure. For the price GGD is great. And for the most part (especially OKW) it’s pushed as a tool for demoing songs and helping quickly with songwriting. SP on the other hand is incredible, no question it’s the big gun, but it’s also like 10 times the cost of OKW.
