    Barry was a true warrior, a legend in the realm of motorcycle road racing in the same league with Micheal Hailwood.

    The root cause of this incident was the tire outer diameter grew once at speed and contacted the swingarm. It was found that other bikes in the field including Yamaha's were doing the same thing but the issue was remedied before another disaster occurred.

    • @TheHalloweenmasks
      @TheHalloweenmasks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One would think that this would have a "braking effect" on the rear tyre, slowing it down, this would stop the growing effect of the tyre diameter. Just a thought.

      @@TheHalloweenmasks
      I'd have to assume it was just enough growth to eventually and gradually destroy the tire.
      Between momentum and the HP/torque of the mighty 750 2-strokes, the scrub apparently went un- noticed by the rider(s).

    • @carlfrye1566
      @carlfrye1566 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hard to believd they didn't test tire growth on a dyno/test rig for those very high speeds. Then again those days weren't as tedious about safety as now.

      Did you hear the mechanic warning Sheen of the damp patch coming off the turn?

    • @muckle8
      @muckle8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the motor locked personally , I don’t buy the tyre story, it may have even made the motor blow if the tyre was frictioning the swing arm hard possibly - just a thought - nasty nasty accident though - must have hastened Barry,s life

    God I love the sound of two stroke engines with open expansion chambers. Brings me back to the early 70’s. Daytona back then was an endurance race. The tires had to last the whole race. The riders couldn’t get too racy or the tires would go off and their race would be over. That’s why the Yamaha 350’s did so well there. Not too fast but still able to get around quick enough and handled good enough because they were light.

      Those RG500,s were insane.Either nothing or everything.There was a good documentary on /if modern GP racers now could handle the powerbands.They had disc valves of sorts on the ports that maximised power.2 strokers are mad engines at that size anyway.

    When I was a little kid I pestered Barry for stickers in the pits at Silverstone when he was sitting in his garden chair in his AKAI leathers. I was a little bastard but I loved Barry. Always numbered my bicycles with a 7. "Cam back later, I told ya ...cam back later, I ain't got 'em 'ere!" I did and he had them for me.

      @@boycottjews I don't see how people are going to get to enjoy racing as we know it in the years to come, sure, it'll go on even with electric powered machines, but for younger kids who grow up around it, they might get a charge out of it, but nothing like we know of the sounds and the smell that racing once was. I can't even imagine what a Speedway race will be like without it, or the sound of a multi cylinder two stroke coming at you from down a long straight section, then downshifting as it gets into a turn and back on again WFO! 1.54 "one of the disks is a little bit warped" modern disc brake systems have " float" either in the disc or the caliper, without float a warped solid mounted disc hits the pads in the solid mounted calliper, the resulting heat causes the brake fluid to expand filling the reservoir, once full the expanding fluid pushes the pistons out,further increasing heat, what we are seeing here is the development of the modern braking system curtsey of Sheene,s broken bones
