I drove Jim's Rolls Royce when i was working in a hotel in the west end. He booked into the hotel Strand Palace, in the early hours, and asked me if i couldpark his car. I couldn't believe the mess inside with the ashtray over flowing, and litter all over the place, b ut that didn't other me, it was an honour. This was around late 70s.

@@winklton It's actually 'YOU'RE in love with' . Getting YOUR YOU'RE right isn't rocket science. It's basic English that a child should grasp with ease. I can be 100% sure that the calibre of people who find Davidson amusing will have a much poorer grasp of the English language than the calibre of people who find Lee amusing. The latter are much more likely to be highly intelligent, educated and cultured.

I read an interview of his in one of the tabloids in the early Eighties in which he told of the night he was waiting for a taxi home in London, and two black guys walked past him, stopped and turned around, leaving Davidson suddenly feeling as though he was in a great deal of trouble. One of these guys asked him if he were Jim Davidson off the television, and there was a moment in which he wondered if he should run or say "no". He eventually said "yes, it's me", at which point one of the guys put his hand out, which Davidson expected to have a knife in it. However it was merely the guy putting his hand out for a shake, and the big lad said "I'm West Indian, and your impression is hilarious". They supposedly walked away leaving Davidson feeling a bit better about how "Chalky" was received.

It's not at all easy to be a comedian so I give him credit for getting up there, also I like how he involved Charlie Drake on his shows and got him work doing pantomimes, I think Jim has a kind heart and his humor may be seen to be racial, but its just observation of characters, no where near as racial as some comedians I can think of. I can understand his comment about the Rolls Royce, and cudos for him going back to mum.

Lot's of comments about 'wokeness' on here. People saying 'back in the days when you could be funny' etc etc.
Russel Kane summed it up perfectly. Back when Jim Davidson was prime time viewing, comics could say racist and homophobic things on family shows. Yet if he had used certain swear words, he would have been booted off air immediately. Nowadays you can say pretty much any word...but not be racist.
All that's happened is the goalposts on what you can and can't say have shifted. Frankie Boyle made a whole TV show slagging off the royals. That would never have been broadcast 40 years ago.
So before crying 'woke'...have a think about all the jokes you couldn't make years ago compared to now.
That's the trouble with 'woke'...people chuck it into conversations without actuall thinking what it means. It would be far easier to just say 'this is new stuff I don't like' instead of sounding the 'woke' trumpet at every opportunity.

@@jamesbeggs9733 Not much of a barometer really though is it. People get entertained at Royal Variety Performances but it doesn’t mean they’re any good. Humour is subjective anyway. Just because I don’t like it, it doesn’t mean that a right-wing comparatively uneducated person in their late 60s nursing a serious brain injury and a lot of bitterness won’t. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. How many crowds are there by the way - I thought there would be just the one?
