How to Make a Simple Clutch or Brake Bleeding Kit

  • How to make and use a simple clutch and brake bleeding kit. Here I am using it to bleed the clutch system on a 2000 Toyota Yaris 1.0 petrol. On this, and many other cars, the clutch and brake fluid are topped up from the same brake fluid reservoir. On some other vehicles the clutch and brake systems have separate fluid reservoirs so check before you bleed it. If in doubt, consult with your car owner's manual. Thanks for watching. As an enthusiast I've been working on cars and motorbikes for over 3 decades and never used the exact same solution as presented in this video. I came across it recently when having problems with clutch dropping to the floor on my 2012 Volvo V60 2.4 D5. I was dreading a replacement procedure of the clutch slave cylinder (massive nightmare to get a clutch pedal out) or worse, the cost of a potential new clutch, dual mass flywheel and slave cylinder. It turns out my clutch fluid was never replaced before (completely dark and contaminated) so flushing it out and bleeding the system using this method sorted out the problem. It feels like a new clutch again. £££' saved and a lot of man hours. I thank and salute you Sir!

    This method works great and no need for a second person. Also, you can just use an empty bottle without a lid. One thing I always do on bleeding a clutch system is to drain out all the old fluid and clean crud from the bottom of the reservour [sp], then refill with new brake/clutch fluid. Old fluid has done its duty and probably contains a lot of moisture, which can rust out the cylinder bores so best to remove all the old fluid.

    • @antoniomartingarcia6229
      @antoniomartingarcia6229 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was thinking on doing exactly this. But i'm dubious because of the statement of the video that bewares not to let the fluid to go below the MIN mark in the reservoir tank.... In other words, if i empty the reservoir tank it will go below this minimum mark, innit?

    • @dzoni97a
      @dzoni97a 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do I need to bleed the brakes as well if I want to drain all the fluid or that's separate from the brakes?

    • @user-yo1pk4ky4k
      @user-yo1pk4ky4k 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At least on my old Toyota truck the clutch master cylinder is about two feet right above the clutch slave cylinder. So there is almost a straight tube connecting them and once I drain all the fluid out I was able clean the reservour then attach the plastic tube and bottle onto the bleed nipple then fill the reservour with clean fluid and go through the process of pumping the pedal so the fluid completely filled the system and pushed out all the air. @@antoniomartingarcia6229

    • @user-yo1pk4ky4k
      @user-yo1pk4ky4k 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The hydraulic clutch system is not connected to the brakes in any way. So bleeding the clutch system has no effect on the brakes. Usually the clutch and brakes take the same type of fluid, but check your owner's manual to be sure of this. Maybe somewhere out there a POS vehicle like the Yugo might have used two different fluids to further torment the hapless owner! But I have never seen any vehicle that used anything but brake fluid in the clutch hydraulic system. Good luck!@@dzoni97a

    • @millerctongs
      @millerctongs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      it means dont begin the bleeding process unless the oil is above the minimum level, you will just suck more air in if the fluid is too low@@antoniomartingarcia6229

      Hi all. Just found this sub. I hope that you can help me.
      Sorry in advance for my technical english. So...3 months ago while driving, after stopping somewhere, pressed clutch but could not engage to gear 1. Turned off the car, turned it back on and it was good to go. Parked it near my house. Tomorrow morning,.entered car, put reverse, got out of parking and after 30 meters clutch stayed to the floor. Would not come back up. After manually moving it, came back up and it was OK to move. Moved about 700 or 800 meters and it stuck again to the floor. Let it somewhere. Tried manualky but it would not come back up. Tomorrow towed the car and sent it to a mechanic which my brother in law knew. He needed the slave cylinder replaced. Found a used one but in good shape. Gave it to him and took the car back the day after. It was everything OK unless after 1 or 2 weeks it happened again. Let the car for about 2 months without moving it. The gears changed perfectly ONLY when the car was off. This time the pedal came back up everytime i pressed it. But when on, gears would not change. When it was off put it to first gear and turned the car on and with difficulty it was good to move. Sent it to the mechanic again and he told me thar the entire clutch set needed replacement. It was hard to find it for 6 gears but finally found it (used but in really good shape) and gave it to him. He did it. I took the car, moved without problems (except 1 or 2 times while needed to pump the clutch). I thought it was normal after changing the entire set. Went home. Everything OK. After 4 hours, pressed the clutch pedal and it stuck to the floor again. Moved it back and forth manually until came back itself. It was good. I moved and it was OK, until it wasnt anymore. Could not shift to 2nd or 3rd while driving. Also could not shift to neutral when wanted to stop. Only if constantly pumping it unless could not pump it anymore. Parked on the road side. Let it there. Went home walking. My brother in law finished his shift and we came back to my golf 4. After many tries thr pedal was hardened and i could shift again...at least to first. During driving to go to the mechanic again, same problem. Pumped it constantly during driving. Let it to the mechanic. He told me this time for the master cylinder (the one in the clutch pedal if im not mistaken on this term). Found it. Gave it to him. He fixed it again. Took it today. It was smooth, everything OK...unless it happened again. Could not shift...with very much difficulty after trying to press clutch pedal several times. Not the same difficulty like other times but problem is still there. Now my car is parked. It's not asvbad like the other times, clutch comes back up easily but cant shift gears unless i try several times.
      Please help me cause i'm really frustrated. Could it be that air or debris is trapped inside the brakes (clutxh) fluid or something like that? There are no leaks.
      Thanks is advance!
      UPDATE: Update: Turned the car on this morning. Pressed clutch and it stuck to the floor. Put it back up with the side of my foot. Did this like 4 or 5 times until it could came back up by itself. Pumped it and gears were shifting OK. Stayed with car on in neutral for like 5 minutes, and the problem resurfaced again. The clutch becomes very loose, until i pump it back up. Now i'm at work but i'm sure that when i go back home and try again, it will happen the same. Clutch to the floor and repeat.
      Please help me to locate the problem cause i did everything and don't know what to do anymore. It is my only car atm. No money for a new one lol :)
      EDIT: Tried it 20 mins ago. Had to pump it like 3 times to be able to shift. Didnt move car. Just tried it there.

      @The Blue Jeans It might be worth a try but it's usually other things that cause that issue. The usual suspects are a failed clutch release bearing
      , failed slave cylinder, a failed clutch master cylinder or a broken clutch linkage. If bleeding does fix it, you'll need to find out where fluid is leaking out or where air is getting into the system.

      @The Blue Jeans You're welcome, good job ! :) It is possible that air can be drawn in from around the loose bleeder screw threads as you bleed the caliper. Be careful not to open the bleed screw too much :)

    Just a suggestion. Fill the tube till it is full of brake fluid. I know the fluid will go down in the tube due to gravity and it is tricky to get air out of the tube, but it is possible with a bit of hit and miss in the placement of the tube relative to the fluid level in the bottle. The best way is to have a tight fit of the tube in the bottle cap with a bit of heat glue. The secondary hole need not be made, and by opening and closing the bottle cap we can control atmospheric pressure in the bottle, thence work against gravity, in keeping the tube filled with brake fluid. Squeezing the bottle with a tight cap will expel air out of the tube. Loosen the cap as needed when bleeding the air out of the system. When pushing the tube onto the bleeder valve it is best not to have air in the tube in the first place. This helps if the bleeder valve does not have a one way mechanism or the one way mechanism is circumspect..

      How far out should the slave cylinder push out, mine only pushes out about a quarter of a inch. Should it push out more than that.

    very good video my friend. most of them bleed kits under £10 are cheap and rubbish im going to make one of these. all the times I've done this job and wished id had another pair of hands to keep the fluid topped up but like most of us DIY guys theres no one around. Tony Leics uk

      @@guillermocantu8986 yes mate. Worked very well , it turned out that my slave cylinder was deteriorated so bought a new one and did it all again. The second time. With new line and. Works superbly now.

    Had this problem on my dodge challenger 2017 only30k miles the problem appeared after parking it for about a month an not driving it the pedal got really light I’m going to try this method and hopefully it will drain the air out and stiffen back up the pedal again like when I first had it
