    We've been lucky enough to have a patch of violets under our hedge for more than 20 years. I never thought to look into them at all. I've known from a young age that they were edible but that was all. Thank you for the information!

    I found dog violets, picked some, steeped fresh violets for 24-hours on the counter and then put the steeped tea in the refrigerator. How long will it stay good in the fridge?

    Thank you for sharing; I knew the violets could be eaten but never knew the leaves could be too. I'm fortunate to have an abundance of violets and let them grow as a ground cover. Because they are in garden beds .Just before spring I have always stripped about a third of the leaves to expose the flowers and also supposedly produce more flowers. ( Not sure if this bit is true or whether they are simply more visible although some buds may get more light and therefore develop better.) I love the soft subtle smell of violets and there is a saying if you smell violets there is an angel watching over you. I also have a double variety that can be slow to get established but once it gets started can be just as prolific as the regular sweet violet. I didn't realize parts of Europe lost a lot of wild violets; and I always feel bad thinning the plants out. I think I might start planting them in the grass but then I don't want to let them take over the clover plants.

    Why doesn’t mine turn blue? I have violas, I pour hot water over it. It didn’t happen last time, so I collected a huge jar this time, it still didn’t work, do you add lemon juice or something?

    • @jennifercline6866
      @jennifercline6866 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are they true sweet violets, more so its also amount of flower to water. If too much water it comes out much lighter. The lemon turns it blue to purple/pink(ph indicator basically). Good luck.

  • @jennifercline6866
    @jennifercline6866 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been picking slowly, dehydrate most of super low to keep color. I'm making a tea today from some older dried and fresh, it's fun to amaze students with the lemon color change.

    Good to remind people to save some for wildlife and seeding. Apparently they are becoming less common in some areas. I might consider trying to grow these at home on the lawn to help them out.

    What a lovely tea. I recently heard about purple shiso tea, so I planted seeds. Looking forward to it. I wonder if there's a color change with shiso tea as well when lemon is added. I'll be looking out for violets soon so I can make this tea, hopefully mixing the two together as an experiment.
