Metal Detecting GHOST TOWN In NYC (Arverne East) & Dead Horse Bay

  • Arverne East is an area within New York City in the Far Rockaway section of the Borough of Queens. This area was once densely populated with beach bungalows and hotels, but has fallen in to urban decay. It is an area of undeveloped, neglected beachfront land that spans from Beach 32nd Street to Beach 56th Street. And I quote from the Rockaway Youth Task Force website, “the land has a storied past and an uncertain future. What was once a popular summertime destination and home to many year-round residents, has now become a visual reminder of what could have been. The stretch of land was developed in the late 1800s and catered to the beachgoing summer crowd. However, many neighborhood hotels burned down between the turn of the century and the mid-1900s, causing the area to fall into disarray. This area was bulldozed in the 1960’s and there has been a half century long argument as to what to do with the land. Found a 1908 Barber Half Dollar.
It is a ghost town because you can see visible reminders of the past in plain view. Fire hydrants and street signs are intact. But the roads have eroded are filled with super sized potholes which New Yorkers call “Moon Craters”. Nature has taken back the land.

I had bought an expensive book of old NYC maps and it was practically useless. I never knew about the website you use. You perfected what I only had an idea of doing. I went to so many trashy areas worked digging like crazy and pulled out so much trash. My detector was a Pulse 8X which is really designed for U/W and hits so hard on iron deep and far. The other was an old Garret Scorpion for gold sensitivity. I never quite worked out the differentiating the tones for the metal type. My detectors do not work like that really. Still not sure what type machine would be best for NYC. My Tesoro Sand Shark I use in the Caribbean and it works great so far in and out of water on beaches. That was a great coin I am glad for you! Well done!

I cant help but feel that the investments such as the book and the detectors (I have collected a few myself) speed up the learning curve. Ive tried pulse induction machines without ID and VLF machines that tell you (very often incorrectly past certain depths) what the target is. The BIG secret is to DIG! Yes, historicaerials.com has made the research a lot easier, but very often it is about moving the trash targets out of the way. New York has been a large city for a long time. Remove the layers of trash piece by piece and use a machine (and coil) that goes deep. The good stuff is still there! Thanks JoeMoe Moe!

Congrats on a great hunt! Sweet Barber! The largest silver I found was a half dollar. I got only 2 so far. They were less popular in Canada. My most valuable is 1871 five cent, would have been 130$ but I scratched it a tad. so maybe half that now lol.

If you could find a way to haul off the fire hydrant you showed, you could salvage it for the weight of the brass it contains. A friend of mine did that in the 1970’s and made $60.

The thing that you said looked like a big clothespin is the top of a big safetypin, used to close laundry bags, often in hotels; the coin with a K may be a Scandinavian country, I don't know which, Kroner, or Crown coin.
