Barren Island: The Other Side Of Dead Horse Bay/Glass Bottle Beach Metal Detecting

  • Many people have heard of Dead Horse Bay and Glass Bottle Beach. But, getting fixated only on that one tiny stretch of land is like listening to one song on a great album and ignoring the rest. In this video I am going to metal detect the remains of history rich Barren Island.
Now here’s the thing, its not called Barren Island anymore. It’s not even an island. It was landfilled in the late 1920’s and connected to mainland Brooklyn when the airport Floyd Bennett Field was made. Lets use historicaerials.com to look back in time and see what remains of the actual Barren Island. As you can see, the bottom of the current shoreline of Floyd Bennett Field is consistent with the 1938 shoreline of Barren Island. Look at the Black Dots on the historic map to see where the buildings were in 1938. If you go back to a 1910 map, you see slightly different alignments to the buildings, but you can see that the shoreline remained largely the same.
Now, I myself am completely intrigued with Glass Bottle Beach. It is a one of a kind place on Earth.
Its landscape changes every day and new treasures are uncovered daily. It has a haunting aura and gravity that has brought me back 5 times in the span of a month. But, what I am telling you in this video is; if you focus just on Glass Bottle Beach, you are missing out on a fascinating bigger picture. There are many ghosts to uncover on the other side of the island! And that is exactly where we are going in this video.
But first, lets clear up a few misconceptions. Lets start with Dead Horse Bay. A lot of people mistake Jamaica Bay for Dead Horse Bay . Dead Horse Bay was a tiny inlet on Barren Island and it is mostly covered over now. This bay is where 300 years of history has been dumped. There was a Dutch presence in colonial times and a tidal mill can still be seen. From the mid 1800’s until the Great Depression, a culturally diverse group of New Yorkers called Barren Island home. Some would say that these were the poorest of the poor, but I understand Barren Islands population at the time to be people who preferred to be off the grid. Check the New York Times article in the video description to see how I got that perspective. These “off the gridders” manned fish fertilizer plants, fished and boiled down animal carcasses to make glue and oil. That, fishing, garbage processing and scavenging was the economy of Barren Island.
It had a peak population of about 1500 around World War 1…….and all 1500 had to have a LOUSY sense of smell!!!! There also was a population of about 100 pigs that were the islands pets. Im also linking to an interesting story when New York’s Mayor declared war on these pigs and the residents hid them from the police hunt. In its heyday, Barren Island was notorious for its smell. It was noxious from miles away and considered the least desirable section of New York City. It was one of the last sections of the city to get running water and flushing toilets. Robert Moses, the man who planned New York City’s modern infrastructure kicked the last of the residents out via eminent domain in 1935 when the Marine Parkway Bridge was built, the last residents left in 1942 and many of them were given little time and notice to pack. Their belongings litter the final layer of historic trash strewn upon Dead Horse Bay.
So its time to start metal detecting but I couldn’t help but notice a sentence on the Barren Island Wikipedia page, “No trace remains of the former island's industrial use”…..Are you kidding me? Its everywhere! But still, we are going to take that as a challenge. So the goal of this mission is to find a relic from Barren Island’s industrial history. Easy peasy!

You are right about the bottles washing out from the landfill rather than in from the water. The cap on the fill burst years ago, and the storm tides are pulling the artifacts from the landfill out onto the beach. Definitely worth a revisit.

Have you thought about bringing a gold pan to prospect the lines of black sands? Really enjoying these videos and your sense of humor. That "Bromm" item was from a Bromo Seltzer bottle maybe? If so, it was used for headaches, stomach disorders and hangovers.

The phallic shaped object that you wondered what it was is most likely a part from an electrical switch or some other electrical doodad. The arm part is copper and the thick piece of metal soldered to the end is pure silver. Well worth saving each thing like it that you find. The silver can be separated with a hammer and cold chisel, if not they come right off heating the part with a propane torch.

Just subscribed to your channel and nice to meet you! It is really tough metal detecting and the eye is a better tool to use there because of HOW MUCH metal is there. Were talking NYC's dump site for over 50 years and layers of metal there. Check out 0:52 to 3:45 the south shore is the best. The WHOLE ISLAND has history, but Dead Horse Bay is the place to be. Find on the map where it says Dead Horse Bay and that is the best location.

There is a place in Keyport Nj across the bay from Brooklyn that was called Aero marine . There is a video on you tube about it . It was a place that made the first airplanes that flew on water that operated from 1914 until 1930 . Then in the 50's it became a land fill for the area that closed in 1979 . I lived across the creek in Union Beach growing up in the 70's and would watch the garbage trucks dumping almost every day . Down the end of the street I grew up on was a field they would bring the bulk garbage to I used to have a field day going through the bulk ,finding cool old toys and other interesting things . Also there was a beach called pebble beach in Union Beach across the dump where all kinds of stuff would wash up on the shore mostly plastic dolls that was very strange . I just found out a couple days ago that there is now stuff coming up out of the ground and pouring the beach and water . All my life I wanted to go and metal detect there . My daughter even naught me a detector . But the past 2 years I have been very I'll and don't have much longer to live . I wish I could go there I'm sure there is some pretty cool stuff to find . Thw place is now a industrial park with the old dump at the back of the property that is at 55 Walnut St Keyport Nj that sits along Raritan bay and Chingarora creek . I lived a block away on Ash st .I think it's funny how they built 3 houses on the bulk garbage lot and one day seeing a guy that had put up a above ground pool . He told me he dug up a lot of crap just to put the pool up . Last year I got to see my old house I grew up in get demolished for a new home to be built , there is an old neighbor of mine that still lives there that told me last year that my old house sat on washing machines, refrigerators and a few cars . The house was built in 1960 . Now there is a new 600,000 dollar home sitting there still fresh on the market 200 Ash st union beach nj . Oh yeah the lot on the left of the house was a dumping sight also . Oh man things they used to get away with back then

Hi. Love your videos!! Question- where did all that trash come from? The ocean? Or did it come from those layers in which you pointed out? I read somewhere online that it was a landfill at some point. Read also that people were told to leave their homes in that area as they were going to start construction on what is now the BQE. Any info you could provide would be great. Thank you.
