Hi! We're the devs of En Garde! Thanks a lot for this wonderful review! 😄 We'd like to mention that we've made a few bug fixes and improvements for the launch version that fix some of the issues you mention in the review! Hope you'll enjoy the game!
I was obsessed with The Mask of Zorro and The Princess Bride's fencing scenes as a kid, and always wished there could be a video game that recreated that kind of lighthearted swashbuckling feel. I think y'all have made my old dream a reality. I'm picking this up ASAP!
I did the same, but I think it fucked up the Surprise Kick move. It turns it into X+B (on an Xbox gamepad) and that is super difficult to press simultaneously. Luckily that move isn't the most important.
Best choice u made. I remember wen I played a game similar to this (Jedi fallen order) I remapped the light attack to R1 instead of square and heavy attack to triangle
This year has been an absolute gem for indie and budget games. Right now I am playing Turbo Overkill and loving it and already this is one on my list. I love having so many fun cheaper games that I can play without worrying about AAA problems.
As someone who loves movies like The Mask of Zorro, The Three Musketeers, and the original Pirates of the Caribbean (before I got sick of both Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp), I found it exciting to see an original video game with a genuine appreciation for the "Swashbuckler" genre. I'll honestly wait and hope for a console release. But, I'll hope more that this will lead to a new style of action game. I'm all for more "En Garde" if they continue to refine it.
My personal tip to see which enemy you're locking onto: Hold an item your hand that can target enemies (not to other objects). You'll see a white outline around the target you're focusing on.
Seems like fun! And having its scope be a bit more bite-sized is a plus for me. Too many games need 80+ hour playthroughs and oftentimes a 5 hour romp is just what i want.
I've been keeping track of this game since I first heard about the demo. I'm sad to hear it only took 5 hours to finish the story. I'm usually on the side of shorter games, but by that I mean like 10 hours instead of 100. I wish $20 wasn't so much money to me right now, or I'd give it a try today.
Its a fantastic game, one that absolutely deserves a sequel which builds on the excellent combat and the okay paltforming to make a modern.action adevnture masterpiece
This looks pretty good and I might pick it up one day, unfortunately it came out too close to Baldur's Gate 3 (which I'm 100 hours deep into so far), Armored Core 6 next week and Starfield in 2 weeks.
@billh7451 Baldur's Gate 3 has boring gameplay compared to En Garde lol...I got bored from the first 20 min from that game...Armored Core 6 feels boring, never liked mech shit, Starfield...well if is another Fallout 76...no ty...
As a long time Zorro fan (since the days of Guy Williams) it was baffling to me that no decent zorro game has been created! Those days are over! En Garde is Zorro the game! A great game that feels so satisfying to put down hordes of naive guards using your technical knowledge as much as getting an advantageous position and even using the environment! Just like Don Diego De La Vega would do! I absolutely love this game for what it set to be, it succeeded with flying colors!
I cant see Jesse swinging a sword in a historical setting without setting off smoke bombs in crowds of civilians, thanks to the AC: Black Flag streams haha
Funny you mentioned the Control issues with the game (trying to parry while moving the camera). It makes me realize that I take my Xbox Elite controller for granted, seeing how I can do all the face button actions while moving the camera at the same time when playing the demo. Which is a shame, really since that's something the developers should've taken into consideration. Here's hoping you can at least remap some of the buttons to the shoulder/bumpers
Judging by the negative points that you gave to the game, i have a feeling that you played it the wrong way. This game is not meant to be a Dark Souls in every single way. You don't need a camera lock because the areas are very dynamic and you will need to move quickly between places to use the scenario in your favor. It would be a mess to put a camera lock on it. Yet it still a soulslike combat, but it have it own playstyle proposal.

The game looks great, and congratulations on the game's launch! Any chance for console release, perchance?
I am so buying this game ❤
Great work it looks gorgeous!
It looks fun. 👍 Well done.

They have full keybind customization. I changed my attack and parry to RB and LB, respectfully, and it made a world of difference.
I did the same, but I think it fucked up the Surprise Kick move. It turns it into X+B (on an Xbox gamepad) and that is super difficult to press simultaneously.
Luckily that move isn't the most important.
How were you able to change the controls? The game wont seem to let me switch inputs
Lol, I think you mean "Respectively"

As someone who skipped Sifu (which looks kinda similar to this game), I am really intrigued by En Garde. Always wanted a good Zorro game.
Agreed swashbuckler is a seriously underserved genre in video games
@ShinTobyTeh Sifu was just frustrating, this game can be hard but fun :D
I loved Sifu haha
@@iuliuslovin37 sifu is rewardingly frustrating tho
Well, thats enough of a thumbs up for me :D I'm excited to go try it now

Saw Iron Pineapple play this on his channel and the creativity of using the environment looked awesome! Definitely picking this one up!

amen brother!
the only games that need 80 hour playthroughs are JRPGs.
I won't spoil what's said, but a couple times I would hear an NPC say something after they were defeated that made me lol.
I didn't know I needed a Zorro simulator in my life until very recently
I'm currently playing a swashbuckler in DnD, so this is right up my alley.
Count Duke? Hm... Does his sword have a curved hilt?
Reminds me of Zorro The Chronicles or as you may consider it, baby’s first Stealth Action Adventure

I remember enjoying demo quite a bit will probably pick it up soon
Honestly, the game just looks so lovely. It gives me the beautiful nostalgia for the PS3 era of games I played. ^^
This look like Inigo Montoya : the game and I'm all for it.
good review. def buying this one. what a breath of fresh air!
Its a fantastic game, one that absolutely deserves a sequel which builds on the excellent combat and the okay paltforming to make a modern.action adevnture masterpiece
I love this game. Would encourage anyone who likes swordplay to try it. It's like a casual and goofy version of Sekiro
I am excited to see what other games come from these devs, I hope to see this game style expanded on and further polished.
Sounds and looks like fun and a good Soulslike challenge.
gotta love a sword fighting game!

I saw the demo for this year's ago. Glad it became something 😮
This looks very good actually, and for 20 bucks? That's solidd
Thank for the review Grinderbin 👍
I enjoyed Sifu and I'll enjoy this too! Nice Review!
Turn of the motion blur mate, jesus
This looks heccin’ fun.

Ok, you got me at "PANACHE METER", what the hell ahah
Great review and even better because it captured the dev's interest to make improvements.
Is there a scoring system and ability to skip downtime like other action games (dmc, bayonetta etc.) ?
Is it possible to play without the autoaim? I've seen games in which this is optimal, and other in which without the auto aim you can't use abilities
@cfv7461 yes, you have an option for that
I cant see Jesse swinging a sword in a historical setting without setting off smoke bombs in crowds of civilians, thanks to the AC: Black Flag streams haha
Looks fun! hope they patch it up and it runs smoothly once it's out.
Is this coming to PS4?
Weird that it doesn't show you who you're locked onto
@CushionSapp you kind of have to feel it based on the camera and how the character is pointing the sword at

You can!
PC only????
I played the first chapter and I like it so far. The combat system is really fun.
Was the review lagging? Noticed it was going slow
Oh man I wish this was on ps5 😞 I like these types of games
This game begs for a Ribon No Kishi mod ❤
This game is a blast. Don't sleep on it!
looks rad
I hope it comes to consoles
This looks like a near miss for the wishlist. Seems to need a little bit more polish.
hot tip: you can bind the dodge and parry to the same button. super cheesy
Finally, non - depressed Souls.
Why isn't this a Zorro game?!?!
@gryzlaw because we don't need male characters, tired of that shit...I no longer buy or even play for free these games with male characters...
@@iuliuslovin37 since Zorro is in the public domain there's no need for them to be male character.
time to learn claw
Please add UW support
what?
Why does every game with a strong female MC have to make her gay?
@@thehawk420 literally
Man, this game was made for sword lesbians...
@Mirro18 I'm a straight male and loved this game lol, don't need male romance
@@thehawk420 I'm not what? lol
Nice
So Zorro is a girl now. That's original.
@alanlsavoy everything is better with a female character instead of male one! EVERYTHING!
@@iuliuslovin37 that's why a whopping 15% of all games have a female protagonist. you must be suffering
This looks like, Puss In Boots 2011 The Video Game", kinda fun. Maybe I'll try it out
This looks straight up like assassin's creed 2. Cape and all, except the assassin part lol.
Not buying it til they add a battlepass and skins.
Female Zorro!
Homosexuality in a game: 🤢

Zorro, but make it gay ❤️
So Zorro but better
