I love winter paddling, especially when you get one of those rare perfect days of calm skies and see for miles. Great with less cars on the road and easier parking too 🤪
I think a good point to add is to actually test your gear in a controlled environment. Better to find out your gear doesn't keep you warm enough by testing it in a few feet of water at the beach with a friend than during a capsize in rough conditions. People tolerate cold differently as well, so what works for some people may not work for you, perhaps you need more layers, or less etc. Example, I tested my farmer john with a paddling jacket and wool sweater today in 4C water before I attempt to go out kayaking in the cold.
Now this is a good cold water clothing video, makes up for the Cold Water Clothing Clinic video about 4-5 years ago (which I just watched a few minutes ago). On the dry suit, I find it very difficult to zip up and zip off with a rear zip.
I fish solo on a kayak old town 120 pdl in the middle of the night during winter on the river air temps into the high 20s low 30s the water is always 50-60 or below this dry suit will be the way to go.
Great video! It's super challenging in Arizona to dress for the water temp...while on the kayak I'm melting in the sun. Even in winter, the intensity of the sun beating down can be suffocating (at least to me). But the water temps can be in the 50's and 60's. That said, I don't always paddle in AZ, so your advice is really helpful for those times. Thanks!
@@HeadwatersKayak Pretty sure you were there in one of the hot months though. The water is warmer then. LOL I'm talking about paddling in the winter when the water is really cold, but the sun is still hot--if I"m dressing for the colder water...I'll melt. Eeek.
My problem is overheating, went out today ( -2 ) pretty much with your 2 piece set up and a woolly hat and within 15 minutes I was down to a long sleeved T and a baseball cap! I stayed on my benign local river though
Another great video. I too am in Southern Wisconsin and would love to paddle until ice-up. Question is immersion gear. Paddle mostly protected lakes or lazy flowing rivers w/o rapids. I have looked at and thought about paddling pants and jackets but even if the risk of a water exit or capsize are small they still exist. Which is what brought me to this video yet I am still uncertain which way to go.
When in doubt get a dry suit option you won't regret it. The new Loki Drysuit from Level Six is awesome because it doesn't use Latex so its a lot more comfortable for recreational paddlers.
Went to the info section looking for links to the gear you're sporting. Christmas bonuses coming in soon and I have an idea how I'm spending some of it this year!
Tidewe heated bibs absolutely the best 100 bucks I have ever spent comes with a battery that last all day..ck them out I'm not sponsored by them they are just unreal for the price...3 heat settings
Not a fan of latex gaskets. My Ocean Rodeo has those. I'll take the couple of thimbles that get through my other suit in exchange for the added comfort most any day. Pogies for the win though.
Oh man winter paddling? Seems awesome because no one else would be on the water but seems dangerous too. I’m in Wisconsin, if I could shadow another winter paddler I’d be more inclined to do it, maybe I’m being a bit too timid.

Great video and good job talking about dressing for immersion!
Thanks Bill. Winter paddling is one of my favorite things. Hope to inspire more folks to step out and enjoy it.

Now I'm m never going to be able to put on a drysuit without thinking about Ace Ventura, lol.
Thank you, great video!
I can only kayak into late November before the ice starts to really solidify. Then it's snowshoeing and waiting until April or May.
Thanks for the great vid and keeping interesting. Loved the touch of humor too!

I have a video Paddlin The Canyon Lake. You can see we’re wearing long sleeves but very very thin material.

Great video! Greetings from Poland!
Glad you brought up another fishing bib like the old discontinued raptor bibs from NRS. I’ve been looking for a alternative.
Thank you!
Very good info and well done ....thanks!
good doggy

Another great video Dan!
Thank you for this!
This is a great vid! About to start kayak fishing and some crabbing...what do you wear for shoes/boots over the bib stalkings?

But then I went to the Level Six web site. Stuff seems reasonable priced for what you're getting.
Love this! You’re hilarious with these great informative videos. Thank you!👍😂🌅
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Ever think about using a scuba dry suit that you could put a little air in to make it even warmer

What if u tip over or fall in with those pants and boots? 😮
Drown?

More than a few thimbles will come in if swimming or in the water very long.
What is it you don't like about latex gaskets?
@@Mugsie17 Latex gaskets can be terribly uncomfortable for many people. The required snug fit makes it more so.
I wanted to watch you zip up that level 6 suit.
It’s not the most graceful thing

Thats a whole other level of winter paddling up there. But I know people do it!
