      Dude I highly recommend the one-off (but excellent) Elseworlds story 'Batman: Year 100'. It's one of my favourite Batman stories, and at the time it was written essentially tried to treat every Batman story as part of one timeline to varying success (but that's not too narratively important so it doesn't matter too much, two hard dates, however, are Batman's first 1939 appearance and the 1986 TDKR). Basically that idea made into a story

      Yeah, but Dick said he trained for years before Batman let him be Robin, my money is on at least a few months training. And since new Batman had already been seen around town, he couldn't go off the grid again for a few years to be trained so Terry got the abridged version.

      Also the Batmobile appears in the second episode (inque) and it would take time to get that made plus modifications to the bat suit (invisibility).

    I'd go with BB beginning in 2039 and Epilogue in 2054. And I always placed ROTJ at the end of the series. Never really thought about it being in between episodes. Look at Zeta Project still being relevant almost 2 decades later. If only a 3rd season was possible

    • @dcauwatchtower
      @dcauwatchtower  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I do tend to watch RotJ after the entirety of the series if I'm doing a watch-through, since "Unmasked" is kind of a let-down in terms of "finales." Though, at the time, the creative team didn't focus on making every season finale a big deal, which is why we got the BB ending we did. At least they made up for it with "Epilogue" and Terry's other crossover appearances. --J

    • @doodiemac100
      @doodiemac100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say Fall of 2039 when BB started and at least the end of Spring 2041 when it ended. I'd place RotJ being in Spring 2041 as well. As for Epilogue I'd say 2054. As for Bruces' age in Epilogue he's about 90-91 years old. As for Tim Drake, he's about in his mid 50s (around 54) in RotJ.

    • @michaelandreipalon359
      @michaelandreipalon359 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to end BB in terms of "Countdown", what with it being the last production order ep.
      Still, you're right, BB; RotJ (haha, sly Star Wars reference there, you smart alecks in the DCAU creative team) is better off viewed after the show is finished up, with JLU's Season 2 "Epilogue" being skipped for a while until one finishes up with Season 3 (not unlike how Babylon 5 fans skip the all too debatable Season 5 and just finish up Season 4 with "Sleeping in Light"; also, starting and ending the DCAU with B: TAS' "On Leather Wings" and "Epilogue" is beautifully fitting).

  • @kenroykentish4641
    @kenroykentish4641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Epliogue has 65 years time gap making it go from 1989 to 2054 meaning the Justice League show is set in the 80s , Terry is roughly 16 in 2039 meaning in 2054 he's around 31 since the return of the Joker is set in 2042 that means Tim Drake was kidnapped by the Joker in fall of 2002 or 2003 and my guess is that Batman is around 100 in Epliogue making him born in February 19th,1954 (adding his comic book birthday)

      +Daragh O'kane That's kind of the point. DC is fond of giving Take Thats to the fanboys. AzBat, for example, was their Take That to the fanboys who kept calling for a darker, edgier Batman: a crazed, homicidal maniac in a spiky, gaudy power suit covered in ridiculous numbers of pouches. Superboy Prime is a caricature of an angry, socially dysfunctional fanboy with unrealistic power fantasies whose adoration and worship turns to out-of-control rage for little or no reason.

    I've always agreed on the 2039 start date, as it was mentioned in the promo that aired a lot and it does make sense to be a nod to the Centennial of the first comic book in 1939. Also, there was an episode awhile into the series when some people, I think Max was one, walked out of a theater with Casablanca on the marquis. That movie was released in 1942, so that makes me suspect that this was a Centennial theater release of it in 2042 or perhaps in late 2041 when the events in the movie took place. BTW, at the end it is mentioned that the date is December 6. Given the time zone differences, the Japanese attack fleet would have been on the way to Pearl Harbor at the moment Casablanca ended.

  • @BonzerMrT

    I always thought it was always “40-50” years from whatever the current time is. Because when creating a time skip you have years to work with, and yes it could’ve been clear on what suit or what goes where with the directive team. But they created this stuff in the 90’s-00’s the timeline has decades to work with, it was bound to trip over itself in a few places with so many people recounting events from different perspectives, mental states, and passage of time. You gotta think people like Bruce has had done bout everything a human can do, so I’m sure his own body and recounting of time is fuzzy to him

      We never saw Miss Martian in the DCAU, but it’s fair to be interested in the rest. It was never touched on in the main timeline (in the Once and Future Thing, Chronos had killed most of the League by the 2050s, but that timeline was reset). Perhaps it had something to do with the Near Apocalypse of ‘09, or otherwise some other large world-shattering event we never saw take place, between JLU and Batman Beyond.

    I’ve always seen the DCAU as a complete fantasy world. Most of the things that happened in our world never occurred so with that being said, dates were never really a big deal or something that really mattered in that world. So instead of subtracting a date from a date just look at it as time passed, dates are irrelevant. My favorite thing about the DCAU is the way they have a completely different world and technology that’s advanced but also behind us in some areas, that’s why it’s possible to have our heroes in tights all the time. I always saw DC’s world like that, in a complete fantasy world disassociated from ours, whereas Marvel’s world is Superheroes in our modern world.

    I think in placing the starting point it is important to look at Terry's development between Rebirth and Golem. Yes that stretch of time is a bit long but you can tell he has become more experienced by Golem suggesting time and training are prevalent factors. Also the 2039 date is homage to the release of Detective Comics #27, which is important for something...can't remember what though...

    I always wondered when Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and the others got the idea of killing off the joker. Maybe even before the release of the episode rebirth (first episode of Batman beyond), the group of the jokerz always gave me the idea that it was a tribute to a deceased villain as it was when we saw what happened in the events of return of the joker movie. Besides if the joker was alive his ego would never let that group expand like it did, he only saw them as mere imitators and would cut their wings before they even got the chance to expand themselves as a global group. So all this tells me that they already got the idea of killing the joker much before the release of the movie Batman beyond return of the joker.

    The only thing I don't like about batman beyond, is what happens to Bruce. During his jlu days he was bitter but still had people to be around. What happened in between , it would've been nice if him and Diana got together . And then with epilogue Bruce seemed even worse off. He's not the nicest guy to hang with but still deserved better than to be all alone after all the years he's given .

      @@aaliyahrammstein6674 The comics actually answered these questions a bit. Long story short: Bruce and Barbara had a relationship (Which is why you see a picture of her when Bruce looks at the pictures of his past girlfriends in one episode). However, the relationship ended on rather bad terms, which led to Dick and Barba coming back together again, but the problems didn't end there. Dick had no clue about that certain relationship between his foster father and his long time love, and, to make matters worse, Barbara was pregnant. From Bruce. Who didn't accept the child and just flatout told Dick "Congratulations on becoming a father", before getting his rear handed to him by his son who at this point knew everything about what had happened before.
      Dick afterwards did cut every connection between him and every other member of the Bat-Family after Barbara had lost the child due to an injury from crime fightining (Which is also the reason as to why she stopped beeing Batgirl). That's why Barba tells Terry in season one that, if he wants to see someone who's really bitter, he should go and meet Nightwing.
      Also on that note: Nightwing hung up the hero boots, as far as I remember, because of heavy injurys he got during a mission which also led to him loosing one eye.

    I don't care what Bruce Timm said! Batman Beyond is taking place in 2039-2042. On the Batman Beyond Return of The Joker DVD bonus features, there's character bios on Bruce, Tim, Harley, and
    Terry. Terry's birth year is stated on his bio as 2023(this current year oddly enough!) So that means Terry is 16 in 2039, with him graduating from Hamilton Hill Senior High,(but the cerimony not being shown) at 18 in 2041, and the show's last episodes taking place in 2042 when Terry is 19. So all of this makes totally sense.

    I always thought Batman Beyond began 2039 (2039-2042 timeline as the seasons go by and Return of the Joker occurs in between), it makes the most sense, 40 years from 1999. Bruce Timm saying it's 50 years from now just contradicts everything else, especially if he's trying to say 50 years from "Now" meaning even 50 years from this current date. 2039 in real life is 17-18 years from now (2022) so that fucks up the entire Batman Beyond and DCAU timeline if Bruce Timm just wants it to be pretty much anywhere 50 years in the future.
    As for the Justice League: Unlimited episode "Once and Future thing" I always thought that timeline happened because Chronos fucked around and messed that whole timeline up, considering if it is say 10 years from when Batman Beyond started, Static Shock is tbe only character to have aged who is in the Batman Beyond era (Bruce Wayne, Terry, The Jokerz all seem to have not aged, [& that Bonk is alive]) but that could also be due to the timeline falling apart and getting messed up, and that's it's not necessarily a just a future timeline, but an alternate timeline from what I have gathered. So it didn't actually happen within the Batman Beyond era or even universe, plus I think that alternate timeline got erased. So to me, that didn't actually happen within Batman Beyond, at least not the main timeline with the series and Return of the Joker film. (Except Epilogue is obviously within the same timeline/universe as Rebirth, ROTJ in the Batman Beyond, 2039 onwards)
    So regardless, IT'S 40 YEARS, NOT 50 BRUCE TIMM, Jesus!
    And by the way, funny thing is I find Bruce Wayne retired as Batman in 2019.....just before 2020 happened lol
    Batman retired right before shit hit the fan with 2020 onwards...YOU FORSAKEN US BRUCE WAYNE! Hahaha lo

    • @dcauwatchtower
      @dcauwatchtower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re totally on the money re: the alternate timeline! Not at all the same one. As for the 50 years from “now” (whenever “now” is) thing, Timm’s stance is usually also that BTAS through JLU just takes place in more or less present day (aka “now”), being a sliding timeline. Neither way to look at it is “wrong,” but we tend to try and make sense of all the dates if we can.

    This is how I always see it:
    Bruce retired as Batman in 2019 when he was 55.
    When Bruce was 58, Terry was born in 2022.
    In 2030, Amanda Waller sent The Phantasm to kill Terry’s parents but didn’t choose to.
    Two years later, Terry’s younger brother Matthew is born. They’re 10 years apart.
    By the time Terry is in his teenage years, maybe between 15-17, his parents are divorced and Terry lives with his dad. By that point, Terry’s a troubled kid, getting into fights and going in and out of juvenile.
    The year is 2039, 20 years has passed since the last sighting of The Batman. Terry meets 75 year old Bruce, Warren dies, and Terry becomes the new Batman.
    Two years later in 2041, Terry works for Bruce Wayne as his “assistant” full time and The Joker returns.
    15 years later after Terry became the new Batman, he finds out that he’s a clone/son of Bruce and confronts Amanda Waller. Terry accepts his destiny, plans to propose Dana, and continues on as Batman. By this point, Bruce is 90 and Terry is 32.

    If we take the 2039 date for "Rebirth" and the 2054 date for "Epilogue", 2054-50 = 2004...and you determined the ROTJ flashback could be as late as 2007.
    So not necessarily "over fifty years". But "nearly fifty years" would work, as would "over forty years" - which is what Bruce says (47-years-ish under this model). I know there's other conflicting evidence you brought up, but this point about Bruce's statement specifically isn't inherently nonsensical.
    So I think the 2039 date for BB's premiere works best overall.

    I just hate when they tell you the year that something takes place when it relates to Batman. It’s better if they don’t. I like how BTAS mixes a bunch of time periods with it’s own thing. It’s timeless. Tell me how long it’s been in between things but don’t tell me what year it is. The multiverse is endless with an endless amount of timelines so I just like to look at Beyond as one of the timelines. There’s the timeline with just BTAS S1-S3 and nothing else DCAU related, and then there’s the timeline with BTAS S-1-S4, Beyond, STAS, JL, JLU, the Zeta Project, Static Shock, and all of the DCAU movies as well. And then there’s other completely different timelines and universes like one where luckily Bruce and Barbara didn’t sleep together. I just look at it that way. There’s the BTAS S1-S3 only universe and then there’s the DCAU which also includes S4. Oh and I love all seasons of BTAS I’m just saying S1-S3 can be its own thing because there are no DCAU connections in those seasons unlike S4 and the character designs are the same in those seasons unlike S4.

    I guess all this would make Batman around 35 in 2004 lol. Him being born in 1968 or 1969. The whole idea of 50 years ago in 2039 sort of doesn't make too much sense, but if that was the case, Batman would be around 42 in 2004 which is the age Batman looks during JLU.

    So what's the best way to watch the DCEU. More specifically should you watch Batman Beyond before or after Justice League/JLU?

    • @dcauwatchtower
      @dcauwatchtower  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot of debate among fans of the "correct" way to watch the DCAU. Personally, I prefer to always watch any connected series in release order, so that the stories flow the way human beings first witnessed them. Often times, plot twists or story elements are written into later-aired series that make a lot more sense or feel better (in my opinion) than if you try to watch the shows in chronological order. It's up to you. Using my method, you would watch "Batman Beyond" before "Justice League" because it aired before. If you must watch "Batman Beyond" after, at the very least you will need to skip the JLU episode "Epilogue" and come back to it after finishing "Batman Beyond" (and its accompanying movie, "Return of the Joker"). - James

    Bruce proably made Terry complete at least a few weeks, if not months, training in the cave before he was allowed out in the city as Batman.

    Batman Beyond is "50 years into the future" of an Batman "in his early 30s," so Bruce is in his early 80s in Batman Beyond series, and in his late 90s in Epilogue. EZ PZ. If you want to place anything from the DCAU into actual dates, it will be physically impossible, since Bruce was in his early 30s when TAS first aired in 1992, and he was still in his early 30s when JLU ended more than 10 years later.

      He’s actually in his 40s by JLU and it works just fine. :) Check our our “How Old is Batman?” video! The timeline is, in fact, not impossible.

    kinda funny how they almost always say "over X-years" so, in technical truth, it can be above any of the numbers they mention

    I just want to get clear make for timeline purposes I tend to use certain aspects of the earth 12 continuity for the DC Animated Universe because some of the information makes sense for filling in the gaps. this all know from the cartoon Powers made several attempts to take over Wayne Enterprises, in spite of Wayne's refusal to give in. Through a decades-long effort (now let's be honest what most likely happened is the tech that was used in the Batman Beyond suit was probably very expensive which, and in order to cover the cost of making such a suit bruce started liquid wayne enterprise stock, and selling off assets effectively weekend, the company to a point where it would be possible for a hostile takeover.), Powers eventually succeeded in a hostile takeover, resulting in the merging of Wayne-Powers.
    I think it's interesting that effectively because Joker was lobotomized on the Justice Lords Earth that meant Tim got to go on to become lord Red Robin in their universe ,you have to wonder do you think it was lord Batman who suggested to Lord Superman his heat vision to lobotomize on his Rogues gallery, because let's be honest Batman would never be able to bring himself to kill.
    Batman Beyond being 50 years ahead of the DC timeline only applies to the main DC Universe, because Bruce is always supposed to be in his early thirties which means if you tack on 50 years that's means he's in his 80s.

      The idea that Batman can't "bring himself to kill" is a misconception. As Batman himself explains to Jason Todd/Red Mask, he deliberately restrains himself from killing specifically _because_ he wants to kill so badly, and it would be so easy for him to do so. Dark Nights Metal hammers that home, showing us what Batman will become if he ever lets go of that rigidly-held discipline. The no-killing rule isn't for his benefit, it's for _ours._ He knows just how monstrous he could become if he let go.
