You missed another "potential M rated game" on the Wii, it's Zangeki no Reginleiv, a weird hack n slash with lots of blood and dismemberments developed by the Earth Defense Force developers but published by Nintendo, and was rated CERO D in Japan, so +17. The main character of it appeared in Smash Wii U as a trophy and Ultimate as a spirit too.
I remember when they censored the original cover art for Shadowman, where, instead of him holding a skull, it was a pistol. I saw that version in advertisement for the game in a magazines (maybe nintendo power?) before the game came out. Because of c0lumbine, they swapped out the pistol for the skull.
Oh! I actually know something about this! So Geist was developed by N-Space, a studio which ended up shutting its doors back in 2016 after releasing Sword Coast Legends (a game which used the DnD IP). They were primarily a studio which handled ports because of their relatively small size (they did the Call of Duty ports to the Nintendo DS) but every so often they would get to do their own game. It’s always a bit bittersweet whenever I see the studio pop up in a video because I knew a guy who worked there for about a decade and towards the end everyone in the studio was hurting. It hurts a bit to release a product that you are super passionate about only to have it crushed by reviews
Technically, Perfect Dark is the first M rated Nintendo game! But it’s not under the Nintendo banner, they used Rare the same way Disney uses the Pixar, Marvel Studios, or the Touchstone and Miramax brand for mature movies! Although Conker’s Bad Fur Day had no Nintendo’s involvement, since THQ released the game internationally, since Rare didn’t publish games in non-English speaking countries!
@@Markimark151 both Perfect Dark and, in the US, Conker, were basically unoficially published by Nintendo since they did basically all of the publishing duties like distribution, marketing and localization, since Rare was, and still Is, just a developer. That's why THQ had to publish the game in Europe, there Nintendo truly didn't care about it so Rare couldn't "publish it" by themselves.
25:10 as a gay and trans person who has been a fan of Scott’s for years, there’s something so oddly heartwarming hearing him call out homophobia as “dumb as hell.” Idk it really made me happy. Thank you!
Acidentally, this video just made me discover the first game I have ever owned. Famicom Detective Club Part 2 re-release on GBA was the first game I've ever owned. It came when my mom shipped the GBA micro from Japan (first video game console I've ever owned). Couldn't understand a thing about the game when I was a kid, neither do the people around me, I just had a fond memory of staring at the drowned girl from that game because that's where I could only progress the game to.
I'm surprised Scott didn't mention 斬撃のREGINLEIV / Zangeki no REGINLEIV. It was developed by Sandlot, but published by Nintendo. It was a Japan only Wii game released in 2010. It got a D rating from the CERO, being the first Nintendo game to get it.
You can't even have actual relationships in Miitopia. What does happen in that game is that you celebrate with your partners in a loving way (hearts showing up) but not because of being in love or being a couple.
i started the video as a thing to listen to while i drew, but then stopped because i knew i'd tune whatever was being said out and i wanted to pay attention. i've known about scott's stuff for years and yet never actually. . . watched. i'm glad to rectify that!
Miitopia being rated 18 in Russia and only Russia is really funny. It means, by technicality, I own an 18 rated game. I’ve had this game since I was like 10.
I believe the original Famicom Detective Club games weren't that mature. Kinda like the Ace Attorney games which are rated T for the most part too. You do have murder, death and such as themes, but the presentation is still pretty tame (But I guess you couldn't do that much on NES/SNES anyway). Emio is much darker from what I've heard, especially in the epilogue.
Apparently when they were designing the Nintendo costumes in Bayonetta they tried making it as modest as possible, but after they sent it to be approved by Nintendo they immediately heard back with disapproval. Allegedly they thought that the costume weren’t something Cereza would wear and demanded it would be more revealing.
Devil's Third was pretty awesome. I remember I was playing Xenoblade X when Devil's Third got to my home. I was like "Okay, let me check this"... Then I spend a week only playing Devil's Third and only came back to Xenoblade X 30 hours later. The single-player was GREAT. The style of the game was great, the cheesy plot was funny as hell, the boss battles were excellent, changing from gun fight to sword fight was handled just perfectly. And the only multiplayer was just insane, some of the best I've ever played. I really don't understand why reviewers hated it... but it was during that time when it was cool to hate Nintendo and the Wii U, and many reviewers on TH-cam were the "angry type" that targeted Nintendo, so I guess there is there. My only problem with Devil's Third was the not so great framerate, but it was very playable and not really much different from most games at the time. And I am 100% sure many reviewers did NOT play the game. Jim Sterling comments on the plot and gameplay elements were factually wrong, you could clearly see he did not play the game (and at the time he was an huge anti-SJW, anti-feminism, so his content was just trash back then). IGN's review also had the same issues and they claimed to have played the multiplayer when the multiplayer simply wasn't online yet (so they just flatout lied). But hey, professional online gaming journalism was just pure garbage, no wonder they are all dead today. By the way, I also remember the marketing for this game being terrible. The only multiplayer trailer they had on TH-cam at the time was actually uploaded by me (on this very account). It went viral with over 139k views and it was the second most viewed video of the game on TH-cam (behind the E3 trailer). I still have the video, but it's on private now - and it was also na E3 trailer, much more interesting than the original and Nintendo simply didn't even bothered to release it (I don't remember how I got my hands on it, maybe a press release or some random website somwhere). I also made a comparison video showing the evolution of the game when compared to the E3 gameplay and Itagaki even commented on it on Facebook.
I dunno about the performance being on par with most games on the time, since while there were definitely some PS3 or 360 games that ran poorly like Far Cry 3, even then DT is probably worse than those, but by 2015 PS4 and Xbox One made at least locked 30 to be the standard for 2 years, and also most of Nintendo's games on Wii U ran pretty well, so it was at least one of the worst runnings games of the year and it's console.
@@oscarzxn4067 Sure, but the game didn't run poorly at all. The framerate was a solid 30 fps with a few hicups here and there, MUCH better than Far Cry 3, my dude. Hell, I am playing FF16 on fidelity mode on my PS5 at the moment, and it runs worse than Devil's Third, for example. And I don't really care because it's still pretty playable.
3:18 This just in Scott didn't play many horror games from this era. Just one on top of my head thats spooky on the atmosphere alone? Silent Hill 2 enough said.
If Miitopia is rated M in Russia for gay representation, does that mean other Nintendo games with same sex relationships are rated M? Like Fire Emblem Three Houses or Xenoblade Chronicles? Hell, do I dare ask what Bugsnax is rated in Russia?
I do think hearing Scott briefly mention "gay relationships" is amusing, because he gives off peak "Median Voter" energy. Like he's generally supportive but if you asked him what LGBT stood for he'd probably only get 2 right at most. But hey, good enough for me lol.
Perfect Dark and Conkers were published by Nintendo. They were DEVELOPED by Rare. Rare made them and Nintendo Published them for their system. So all of this actually started with the 64.
People (well, English speakers) clearly still don't give a damn about Famicom Detective Club since I can only assume the remakes of the first two sold poorly. So poorly that NoA changed the name for the English version. Instead of *Famicom Detective Club: The Smiling Man,* we got _Emio_ - _The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club._ They clearly felt that they had to obscure the fact that it's a part of that series. It'll probably help. I imagine this will sell better than the first two. There's almost no game-play of them on TH-cam. Not a good sign... Oh, and The Smiling Man is actually the fourth game. The 3rd is call _BS Detective Club: The Past Erased by Snow._ BS being Broadcast Satellite, as in the Satelliview.

Rated M for Miitopia
The Japanese boxes for M rated Wii U games honestly look pretty sick. Should have done the same internationally.
Russia rating Miitopia M is like the "Russia gave Ruby a mustache and made her a guy in Steven Universe" rumor but it's fuckin real lmao

Yeah, I feel like Silent Hill is the prime example to counter his idea. But the sanity effect is something very noteworthy and makes Eternal Darkness stand out among the crowd to be sure.
I'm glad someone else remembered that game.
Opening with tamodochi life music* while showing miitopia is nasty work Scotty
I'll die on the hill that geist is a fun game, with honestly a really cool concept. THE HIDDEN CHARACTERS IN MULTIPLAYER ARE FUCKING AMAZING.
i hope my mom doesn’t catch me watching this!
The first video game to get an M rating was the SNES port of Doom, released on September 1st, 1995.
This is great to watch during the hurricane 🌀
M for Miitopia, yes indeed.
It was originally called "Eternal Darkness: Sanity's" until they saw my name and stole it.
MadWorld deserved a mention. The game is super fun.
Not Nintendo published

Geist had a SUPER UNDERRATED local multiplayer. It was so fun to play split screen with the boys.
I remember when they censored the original cover art for Shadowman, where, instead of him holding a skull, it was a pistol. I saw that version in advertisement for the game in a magazines (maybe nintendo power?) before the game came out. Because of c0lumbine, they swapped out the pistol for the skull.
This is worthy of being a regular episode.
"hold up" right as i'm clicking off lmao
Bayonetta 2 is such a fantastic game.
Scott knew what he was doing when he put Miitopia in the thumbnail and the first shot.
Technically, Perfect Dark is the first M rated Nintendo game! But it’s not under the Nintendo banner, they used Rare the same way Disney uses the Pixar, Marvel Studios, or the Touchstone and Miramax brand for mature movies! Although Conker’s Bad Fur Day had no Nintendo’s involvement, since THQ released the game internationally, since Rare didn’t publish games in non-English speaking countries!
nintendo didn't actually own rare at the time. it wasn't a banner for nintendo, rare just published the game themselves
@@jclkaytwo Nintendo owned half of Rare at that time, they were like the independent Pixar of the time that had a big distribution deal with Disney!
@@Markimark151 notice that you used the word "independent"? hmmm...
owning half a company is not owning a company.
@@jclkaytwo Rare was still independent despite Nintendo’s minority ownership, because the Stamper brothers ran Rare until Microsoft’s buyout in 2002.
Fun fact: the devs behind Rugrats: Search for Reptar and Studio Tour for the PlayStation went on to make Geist.
25:10 as a gay and trans person who has been a fan of Scott’s for years, there’s something so oddly heartwarming hearing him call out homophobia as “dumb as hell.” Idk it really made me happy. Thank you!
It felt so out of place for him to say 'gay relationships' and I really don't know why

Just so you know, the gamecube wasn’t their first console to have rated M games, N64 also had some rated M games.
Rated M for Mii💀
There should a list of all the games Microsoft has backed out of. The list sounds enormous.
Scott, gamecube wasn't the only console with Resident Evil games during that generation.
you can tell scott doesnt like controversy. he grabs the carpet when talking about tomodachi life.
You can't even have actual relationships in Miitopia. What does happen in that game is that you celebrate with your partners in a loving way (hearts showing up) but not because of being in love or being a couple.
i started the video as a thing to listen to while i drew, but then stopped because i knew i'd tune whatever was being said out and i wanted to pay attention. i've known about scott's stuff for years and yet never actually. . . watched. i'm glad to rectify that!
thank you for saying it’s silly they didn’t include gay people in tomodachi life 😭 i never knew where you stood so i feel a lot better lol
Eternal Darkness is still one of best horror games ever. Need a remaster
2:32 what 😦
🙀
The bath tub still holds the record for the absolute worst a jump scare has ever gotten me. I'll never forget it.
Nintendo went from the family console to the leading distributor of 'hentai' games.
Nah the leading distributor of hentai games is definitely steam.
The best thing Geist did for the gaming industry was force epic to change the name of the enemies in Gears of War to the Locust
Miitopia being rated 18 in Russia and only Russia is really funny. It means, by technicality, I own an 18 rated game. I’ve had this game since I was like 10.
Scott talkin' 'bout Bayonetta but not mentioning the giant frog demon who turns into a goth opera singer to sing demons to death, smh
Obviously, that includes Miitopia (it’s R rated in Russia)!
Eternal Darkness got a lower rating in Europe, but Geist was 18+.
11:50 the HUD straight up says SHITS
Geist is actually a super interesting game. I really enjoyed it
Wouldn’t the original Famicom Detective Club games retroactively be their first M Rated games?
Well, they were rated T. Emio, the new one, is rated M.
I believe the original Famicom Detective Club games weren't that mature. Kinda like the Ace Attorney games which are rated T for the most part too. You do have murder, death and such as themes, but the presentation is still pretty tame (But I guess you couldn't do that much on NES/SNES anyway). Emio is much darker from what I've heard, especially in the epilogue.
bro's on his knees and elbows digging in his carpet
Kirby 64 on NSO was rated M at first
T
@@anthonybenci9035 They took down the original post of the trailer that had M
"[Sterling's] content was trash back then" and it still is, so nothing really changed.
I know the problem, you got it set to M for Mario when you should’ve set it to W for Waluigi 🤣
3:18 This just in Scott didn't play many horror games from this era. Just one on top of my head thats spooky on the atmosphere alone? Silent Hill 2 enough said.
The second Geist popped up it brought back so many memories
If Miitopia is rated M in Russia for gay representation, does that mean other Nintendo games with same sex relationships are rated M? Like Fire Emblem Three Houses or Xenoblade Chronicles? Hell, do I dare ask what Bugsnax is rated in Russia?
Nintendo pulled out of Russia when the Ukraine war started, so I don't think xenoblade 3 ever came out there
@@unraged6004 guess I should have seen that coming
The only conteny creator to acknowledge Geist. I loved that game as a kid.
TH-cam, new skip button sucks
When he said he films these far in advance, I was not expecting him to say February! Goddamn! He must be sitting on a stockpile of videos!
Man eternal darkness was such a trip. Would love a switch copy
