Honestly Pokemon could learn a lot from the Zelda release model. Release some dumbass spinoff like a Pokemon Rescue game or a port every year and let main releases spend more time in the oven.
@@trinodot8112 if only, but new Pokémon creatures always come from the mainline games, and new Pokémon means new merchandising opportunities for The Pokemon Company and they won’t pass up on the money from the games, trading cards, and stuff like figures and plushes, especially when the games still sell *incredibly* well despite the mediocre quality recently
Rereleases over remakes could work, but sales wise, spin-offs are no substitute for mainline games. Plus there only been 3 years with no Pokemon spin-off: 1996, 1997 and 2022. Also, remakes and 3rd versions (and now DLC) ARE the low key releases before new games
Link's Crossbow Training began development as a full-blown sequel to Twilight Princess in the same vein as Majora's Mask, reusing assets and all. Miyamoto shot that idea down during preproduction and force the team to convert it into the pack-in title we got, much to the chagin of Aonuma who was very invested on the idea of a sequel.
This raises so many questions, like what the reasoning was for that being a better idea than a sequel, and what a sequel for twilight princess would have even been like 🤔
This would have been such a cool idea considering the character designs were absolutely peak. Imagine if we got backstories and the continuation of the resistance group, or see Agitha grow up and establish a more important role in universe. Considering to what Majora’s Mask did to unnamed OoT npcs, a Twilight Princess sequel would have been amazing.
I didn't even realize Zelda was a yearly franchise until you pointed out. Probably because each game is meant to stand on it's on and not act like the replacement for the last.
I honestly don't blame people for the criticism of the DS Zelda games, it's yet more games that could have been good that got made significantly worse because of Nintendo forcing the controls of the console on to it. And this coming from someone that played both games on their release week, but the entire time i was playing them i was wishing so hard it had a traditional control scheme.
@@okagron you might not, but I do. I think it was a good game and utilized the DS capabilities. Just like every Zelda game that came out. People don’t criticize the Wii games for the Wii controls like they do the DS games.

Sigh. The passing of time and waiting for games as an adult is so much different than when we were kids. Waiting for two or three years for a game could make the difference of being a kid in elementary school or being a teenager about to start highschool. In that time the things you like, the friends you have, and so much more could all change. As an adult, three to six years can pass and you feel like it was no time at all.

October 7, 2008, the first volume of the Ocarina of Time Manga's english translation released. Not a game, but it's SOMETHING. (Unfortunately, the Zelda trading cards were in 2007) There was actually nothing in 2010. Nothing.
The fact that Age of Calamity chickens out so badly is crazy. It'd be like if in Rogue One they somehow blew up the Death Star and all survived and joined the Rebellion. Or if in Better Call Saul he just sticks with elder law and has a nice career and marriage with Kim. The promise of the premise is not fulfilled. And you've misled the consumer. The title is Age of Calamity. And there wasn't a Calamity?????
The problem is less chickening out, moreso misleading/false advertising. The game literally has time travel and guardians turning evil before Ganon awakens. It didn't try to present itself as the true canon prequel to BOTW.
@@moddedinkling4168 The game literally starts with Terrako time travelling into the past alongside fragments of an already awakened Calamity Ganon. The way the champions are recruited is completely different than how it was depicted in the BOTW DLC memories. If you saw those things and still believed the game was completely in line with BOTW then you deluded yourself. If you wanna argue about it not having a sad ending, fine, but don't act like the game wasn't already deviating/chickening out from a 'true prequel' story even before the big twist. They chickened out ever since the *very first cutscene*

Zelda Four Swords on GBA only required 2 people to play. You didnt need all 4. Zelda Collectors Edition came out in 2003. Master Quest was 2002 as a preorder bonus.
It is bonkers to believe that we’ve had a Zelda game released every year since 2017 except for 2022, and that’s only because TotK was delayed to 2023. One release I’m still waiting for to this day though is a port of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, which Nintendo seems oddly hellbent against for some reason. Along with being some of the few WiiU games *not* ported to Switch.
I consider my Switch to be my "Zelda machine" because I can play so many of the main series games on it. But the lack of WW and TP has been a glaring absence for me. So at least I can say that my wii got some love last year when I hunted down an old WW game and emulated TP on it. I hope they release on the Switch 2. Coupled with backwards compatibility for the Switch Zelda titles and improved performance, it'll be an absolute monster for playing my favorite series. I can't wait for what's in store.
I may be one of the few who actually loves Phantom Hourglass. No other Zelda game has felt as innovative as that one to me. Discovering how each item would be used was a joy. Plus some of the puzzles and boss battles were so unique using the features of the DS.
Four Swords Anniversary Edition is completely overlooked here. Scott fails to mention that it supports singleplayer, and it also features exclusive post-game content.
In my opinion, Link Between Worlds is the best Zelda game I've ever played. Everything about the game is exactly what I wanted in an Zelda game. An simple story, an perfect size overworlds, an easy & fast travel, an non-linear approach, better pacing, great progression, new mechanics that works really well, great puzzles, great dungeon designs, an more reliable sub weapons and an difficulty setting. Not to mentioned an great soundtrack & nice presentation. Yeah. This game is identical to A Link to the Past. But with the new additions, I think ALBW took all the amazing stuff ALttP offers and made it even better. To me, ALBW is the pinnacle of the Zelda format. Not just for 2D. But for Zelda in general. It is just so perfect.
@@Jlaps941 I don't think any Link to the Past fans trashes on Link Between Worlds. If anything, those fans; myself included, wanted something like what Link to the Past does and that's exactly what we got with Link Between Worlds.
@lovevictini I have played the Oracle games on the NSO and those games are good. But I think they very limited and I don't like the Pokemon approach where there two separate games and you have to get both for the true ending.
It blows my mind.. absolutely blows my mind that the GBA was SO successful, and had SO many SNES ports, and SO many experimental 3D games… that we somehow never got a StarFox game on GBA. Not to mention an original Mario platformer. Hell, come to think of it, did any mainline Nintendo games get an original game with GBA outside of F ZERO getting THREE?
idk why but I have been on a big zelda kick recently and this scratches all the right spots. long rambling vid on a topic I am familiar about and learned a couple of new things while being mildly entertained by cuss words.
In my experience, three people is actually the perfect amount to play Four Swords Adventures. Having one additional Link to throw around and take care of really adds a layer of fun and chaos.
Man i love Cadence of Hyrule so damn much. I pretty much play this game since 2019 (and the awesome DLC) non stop, It´s kinda my comfort game, so easy to boot up and do a quick playthrough. I really hope Brace Yourself Games is doing a sequel (or more DLC) one day.
Thank you for doing this video, mostly for the history lesson and commentary, but also because you convinced me to give Minish Cap a try. I skipped several generations, I loved Ocarina of Time, I hated Majora's Mask, but I never had a GameCube or Wii, I missed everything between Majora's Mask and Breath of the Wild. I have NSO, and I've been considering trying to catch up and play some of the games I missed. I just finished my Echoes or Wisdom playthrough, and maybe Minish Cap should be my next game.
This is how yearly releases should be. The mainline AAA team takes as much time as they need and releases a big flagship game every 4-7 years. Then in between those big releases, side teams and third parties make spinoffs, remasters and smaller games. This is what Mario does as well. But then you have series like Pokemon lean almost entirely on their primary studio to make every game, or series like CoD and Assassins Creed rushing out new games every year. When people complain that AAA games take too long to come out: no, they don't. AAA games take a long time to make, that's what makes them AAA. The problem arises when a company releases nothing but AAA games; then you either have super long droughts of nothing, or the studio rushing every game to get them out before they're done. The way Nintendo handles big game releases is the right way.
Hey! ALttP Link on his own isnt a pinnacle hero, but that's the same hero that did the Oracle and Link's Awakening adventures! The Hero of Legend is an awesome Link!
I remember actually playing Four swords anniversary edition with 3 other people quite frequently. It was me, my brother, and my two friends down the street would just sit in my driveway and play four swords on our DSis. The fact that it was free made it so much easier to round people up to play it
I'd say Phantom Hourglass and especially Spirit Tracks are worth revisiting some time. They're not the best of the best of Zelda games, but they're still amazing and worth a shot. Go in with the mindset that you'll be using the stylus a lot and the control scheme honestly works just fine. I guess I'm just annoyed at how many people dismiss these games simply because it doesn't use a D-Pad to move around.
Nah, Scott is right, the control scheme really does make both games annoying to play. That's not even the only bad part about them, the incredibly weak dungeons, the really easy bosses, how in both games you have to go through the same dungeon several times (the worst one being in Phantom Hourglass) and all the wasted time traveling around in a vehicle. And let's not forget how horrendous and finnicky stuff like the flute is in Spirit Tracks, that thing is genuinely one of the worst things in the franchise and it's mandatory to complete the game. Probably the two Zelda games that desperately need full remakes.
Specifically for Four Swords Anniversary, they did add a Singleplayer mode, where you play as one Link with a 2nd Link following you, like how Four Swords Adventures does it. You can split up and move the Links independently, and as well the 2nd Link will automatically assist with tasks that need input from 2 players.
I once really wanted Twilight Princess on the Switch, now I have nothing but apathy for the Switch, I have no intention on buying a "Switch 2" or whatever they wanna call it.
While I did follow the series in the early days of youtube, the Spirit Tracks was actually the very first Zelda game I ever played. Got it in 2009 in a New York class trip alongside a 20 bucks copy of B&K Nuts and Bolts. I do remember enjoying it a fair bit despite the very different control scheme. I wish it got a remake with traditional controls though.
31:22 Don't forget The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap was also part of the Ambassador program and that is how I first played, experienced, and beaten The Minish Cap.
Regarding relaunching Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, there are modded versions of those games that use buttons to make the games control like normal. There's also a Dragon Ball game called Dragon Ball Origins that used the Phantom Hourglass control scheme, and in the sequel they made it so you could control with buttons too. So it is definitely doable.
"That's the Zelda cycle. People love the game when it first comes out and then a year later they F-ing hate it." God, if that isn't the core truth of this series. No Zelda game is ever truly appreciated until years after it come out. It makes this fanbase so exhausting, because nobody ever learns their lesson. A new game comes out, it gets its 10/10s, and then you have to spend the entire time until the next release listening to endless think pieces about how it's the "worst game ever" and "ruins the series" and how "things were better before" and they all pretend they didn't do this same thing for the previous release. Its a little hard for me to hear the Zelda fans say Botw was too different and open with a straight face, when not five years prior they were practically screaming about Skyward Sword being too samey and linear.
Well its not a hive mind. People have their own opinions. I don't mind people disliking or liking something as long as their vocal opinions make sense (once you're vocal about something, you better back it up) I never got this argument even assuming the fanbase was a hive mind. Cause its just like complaining to someone "the tv is too loud", and then if they make it too quiet you suddenly aren't allowed to say "turn it up". Imo most people that share your view on the Zelda fanbase are arguing in bad faith. Or, you're struggling to genuinely defend a game you just like so you resort to generalizations
@@chimpindoge3474 When, did I ever say the words or anything even close to the words "the Zelda fanbase is a hivemind"? Surely you understand the basic concept of fandom public consciousness right? Are you seriously suggesting that there are no larger shared opinions in the Zelda community? I'm describing the very definition of what a "fanbase" is. The very existence of a fanbase is predicated on the idea that there exist shared opinions that are common among a group. That's not a "hivemind" that's the basic definition of a fandom. Try saying "OOT is the worst Zelda game" amongst the Zelda community and see how accommodating they are about that opinion, no matter how much you back it up. That's not me calling them a hivemind, that's me correctly pointing out large scale fandom behaviour by a majority of people in a group, with varying levels of intensity from person to person. I say this as someone who loves both Skyward Sword and Botw. We're not talking about one person asking for the volume to be slightly turned down, we're talking about a room full of people demanding silence, and then being angry when there's no noise left. And it has happened to just about every 3D Zelda post OOt. Wind Waker famously got tons of backlash for its artstyle, so much so that twilight Princess went the complete opposite direction with its aesthetic. Botw literally exists as a response to Skyward Sword's intense fandom backlash. The Zelda series has been famously reactionary in design, pivoting wildly in response to large scale fandom reaction. That is objectively true.
@@MaxM210 this is true but let’s be real, SS and BOTW are two opposite ends of the extreme so i definitely think it’s understandable if someone dislikes the way those games approach zelda simultaneously
I think I was not bothered by Skyward Sword on Wii camera because I was so used to z-targeting for camera controls already from OoT and Wii TP. I didn't even think about that until you pointed it out.
I mean, I think wind waker's dungeons are solid. Plenty of memorable puzzles. The triforce hunt is annoying, but man exploring the great sea as a kid is amazing. That blew my mind. I only relatively recently finally explored the whole thing.
49:37 that was how I played Z1 for the first time, before I got my NES Classic. I played Z2 on a friend's NES in 90, then Z3&4 on my own consoles. "A Z a year?" Only recently. You started your release order with OOT? Keep forgetting you're essentially a child.
@@JonathanGouldErunion I wasn't sure if it was the case for the Anniversary Edition, I do have the memory of playing it with 1 friend. But yeah, it is more fun that way.
I think the years without Zelda games are the producers giving you extra time to complete the more recent Zelda games. Sprit Tracks comes out in 2009, 2010 doesn't make a game, 2011 starts with a little Four Swords, and finishes preparing Skyward Sword.
I’ll always go up to bat for Age of Calamity. I get that it’s not canon, and people want canon, okay, but the story they DID tell was like the game of thrones finale we all wanted but never got, and that ending battle scene was just the most amazing Zelda action scene I can remember.

Honestly Pokemon could learn a lot from the Zelda release model. Release some dumbass spinoff like a Pokemon Rescue game or a port every year and let main releases spend more time in the oven.
And give the MAINLINE DEVELOPERS TIME TO BREATHE!
This is an incredible idea
@@trinodot8112 if only, but new Pokémon creatures always come from the mainline games, and new Pokémon means new merchandising opportunities for The Pokemon Company and they won’t pass up on the money from the games, trading cards, and stuff like figures and plushes, especially when the games still sell *incredibly* well despite the mediocre quality recently
Rereleases over remakes could work, but sales wise, spin-offs are no substitute for mainline games.

Fortunately, I have my own ideas for a Twilight Princess sequel.

And there wasn't a Calamity?????
well the whole point of it is a "what if" good ending, and the age of calamity refers to that time period, not the actual calamity itself
@@goonballoonIt's not even a true what if when you consider the BotW characters appearing.
The problem is less chickening out, moreso misleading/false advertising.
The game literally has time travel and guardians turning evil before Ganon awakens. It didn't try to present itself as the true canon prequel to BOTW.
@@garyconstanza3120 That's basically chickening out from making it a true prequel
They didn't want the HD remakes to interfere with sales of the new Zelda games that they had been working on for so long
@@KaitouKaiju That excuse didn't stop them from releasing Skyward Sword HD and a Link's Awakening remake
I consider my Switch to be my "Zelda machine" because I can play so many of the main series games on it. But the lack of WW and TP has been a glaring absence for me. So at least I can say that my wii got some love last year when I hunted down an old WW game and emulated TP on it.

It’s such an amazing game, probably in my top 3 Zeldas, that gets unnecessarily trashed because it shares a very similar map to Link to the Past

But I think they very limited and I don't like the Pokemon approach where there two separate games and you have to get both for the true ending.

spongebob revenge of the flying dutchman is such a nostalgic game man, it felt like i was in the actual show and loved jumping and messing around
Minish Cap, Fusion, Amazing Mirror. . .does DK: King of Swing count?

It's kinda feels like the Scott the woz channel itself you upload alot morr than people give you credit for
Thank you for doing this video, mostly for the history lesson and commentary, but also because you convinced me to give Minish Cap a try.
Makes me realize how much I love the Legend of Zelda franchise. I love all these games (besides the DS stylus games)
Speaking of Zelda that new game is a masterpiece
kuru kuru kururin is such an overlooked entry in the zelda franchise; glad you remembered to include it!
The fact that it was free made it so much easier to round people up to play it
Oracle of seasons and ages were amazing i felt! Had a blast with how different they were
I'd say Phantom Hourglass and especially Spirit Tracks are worth revisiting some time.
What’s great is you can do this for Kirby to, as after a Kirby game, you always get MORE KIRBY

Hey now Sir. Link from “A Link to the Past” is The Hero of Legend who appears as the protagonist for 4 games in the timeline. Respect ✊
See, Phantom Hourglass worked for me because I was used to the Nintendogs agility competitions
Zelda cycle: first they love it, one year later they hate it, ten years later it’s one of the best games ever made
31:22 Don't forget The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap was also part of the Ambassador program and that is how I first played, experienced, and beaten The Minish Cap.
The wait from skyward sword to BOTW was brutal back then 😭
Fair note that Flagship also developed the two mainline Kirbys in between Crystal Shards and Return to Dreamland: Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad.
In fact, Squeak Squad was their last game before their liquidation.
You missed the NES Classics on the GBA
I don't mind people disliking or liking something as long as their vocal opinions make sense (once you're vocal about something, you better back it up)
I never got this argument even assuming the fanbase was a hive mind.
You know that you don’t need 4 people for most 4swords games? The GameCube game can even be played alone.
The Four Swords Anniversary Edition is also playable solo, but you still get the most fun out of gathering a group and playing it as intended.
