It probably never truly will for series X, least not in the way we’re used to. At this point that machine is just a cheap PC alternative. Which I do get some use out of, especially since CFB25 isn’t on PC. But it’s sad to see what’s become of Microsoft, and sadder still to watch them go through the motions knowing there’s no real future.
Same for me with the series X, I've always been a Nintendo gal and handled focused, haven't had a home console since the GameCube so I have a lot to catch up with
@@redspiderlilys6 as a ratchet and clank fan it was definitely worth it. However the Jak & Daxter fan side of me is still starving to death in the desert.
Backwards compatibility really is the best thing about Xbox imo. They barely put out any good exclusives but the amount of backwards compatible games I can play on my series x is insane
@@JGr2000 actually Sony is the only one doing the backwards compatibility right now. And all games have ai uprender, save, load rewind functionality. This month we got legacy of kain blood omen 1 and 2. Dino crisis, etc. get 2 or 3 every month.
Mannn the best point Scott makes here is the fact that companies are so adverse to just making a simple good game. No bullshit, no profit-chasing live service tactics, just a good game. I think the entire movie industry is dealing with this issue right now too... Movies are just rehashes of older ideas because everyone is too scared to either make something simple or fun, or try a new idea. I also love that indies have been getting more of a spotlight than ever, but there is still a part of me that misses that AA/mid-sized studio that we used to see a lot back in the day.
Wait, do you think big game companies make good games for the sake of good games instead of profit chasing? If a worse product makes more money, that's where the company is going to invest. This is basic capitalism
There’s a place with live service games or just games that focus strictly on multiplayer, but yeah I agree. Sony isn’t the only entity at blame, but it’s been so blatant that they’re chasing a profit instead of making a good game. “Games are complicated to make” has been a lot of the mindset which I’m not disagreeing, but uhhh they’ve made good games in the past, they can keep doing it. Even if that means retreading territory and design ideas, there could be fresh takes on what worked. RE4R was the try and true formula in that regard. That game for me sums up to “I’m here for a good time.”
I remember Scott stating that in his cross gen video saying “you’re in an endless loop of spending too much money” when the opposite is true if you go for the used market
Scott's the only guy I know who'd make an hour analysis on a PlayStation and Xbox console while playing Mario music in the background, and I love him for it.
I dont think it's sunk in for Scott yet that the PS5 is entering its FIFTH year on the market. All that stuff about the PS4 not hitting its stride until 2016? 2016 was only the PS4's THIRD year.
And the ps5 has had a lot more big games release in the first half of its life then the ps4 did. Ratchet and clank rift apart, god of war ragnorok, horizon forbidden west, spiderman 2, spiderman miles morales. Thats a monster lineup compared to the first half of the ps4’s life. People just get off on crying and being pessimistic these days
@brando8611 -End of 2020 to the end of 2021 was its 1st year. - E.o. 2021 to E.o. 2022 is the 2nd. - E.o. 2022 to E.o. 2023 is 3rd. - E.o. 2023 to E.o. 2024 is 4th. We passed the PS5's 4th birthday last month. Which means it's started it's 5th year on the market.
@@kenethernandez6246if you dont care about the very safe ps5 lineup and already have a ps4, you aint really missing out on much, i know the games can be good but its more or less the same of whats most of the time on ps4, but if you dont have a ps4, a ps5 is worth it. As Scott said: if they did something more ambigious it would be a lot more exciting im someone whos mainly played playstation my whole life and i just hope the ps5 has some good launches before it inevitably dies out, which i know is possible since sony has resources they just dont know how to use em
I really wanna be excited for the ps5 lineup but its just been meh so far and very safe (i could be wrong later who knows) also considering im just gonna mainly be playing the games i already play on my ps4 just maybe if im lucky, they load faster and possibly look a bit better too perhaps If anything ive been going back on my modded CFW ps3 any playing games i missed out on, and its been amazing and if you guys can i recommend you try something similar to that too!
Play Station is like that guy that used to be a total trail blazer and take risks until he got too comfortable, moved to suburbs, sold his motorcycle and only plays it safe now. Xbox is that dude that was at the top of his game in high school and got into Harvard but got a DUI a week in, got expelled, and hasn't gotten his shit together since.
Exactly. I had my first PS4 back in 2015. Never touched bloodborne, the order 1886 or infamous, yet still was more than satisfied with cyber sleuth, MGS5, FF type-0, Disgaea 5, SF 5, Ratchet and Clank etc,
I'm actually curious on what Scott's opinions on this generation is. Personally I hope they hold off on releasing a next gen console like a PS6, because I think console's life span needs to be longer, the usual 7 years is not going to cut it anymore. These consoles need like 10 years to get the most out of their system, especially as game development is getting longer.
Oh yes, absolutely; the generational gaps have to be a minimum of a decade now at this point, if not even a decade and a half! If I see a squeal console announced to be released before this decade is over?! OMG I can't even.....
I don't think Xbox given up. It just seems like none of these companies care about competition anymore, they are just doing their own thing and they don't care about what competitors are doing.
Yeah I don’t think Xbox has given up. I agree with what everyone is saying that Xbox is trying to do, but I think they’re mistaking it for surrender. I think they’re just aiming to make it where Xbox is a service to make gaming accessible to everyone on a variety of platforms, and they just advertise Xbox consoles as the flagship way to play those games. I personally like the idea, and I’m not doodooing in my pants because some people on another platform get to play Halo or something. I like the idea, it feels innovative how you can play your Xbox games on your phone by streaming it, or if you don’t want the console, you can just get a fire stick or something. Are these really the most optimal ways to play? Not really. But I do find new tech innovations and ideas to be interesting, especially the way Xbox is expanding. I think the biggest issue is they just don’t have a lot of really groundbreaking first party games. Which I don’t care too much for, but it would be really great if they would just make a game that was decent for once in a while. I also like how Nintendo is doing its own thing as well which is just being the console for casuals or people who want to play with their friends and family. I like how games like Legend of Zelda and Mario are family friendly, but they still target everybody. Mainly the Mario in anyway, being advertised as a split screen game everybody plays at a party or something. And PlayStation is focused on story based games and such.
Feels like a fandom rivalry thing and they want the console wars to continue in perpetuity. Much like how people still think Marvel and DC are sworn enemies.
@ pretty much. I have a bunch of friends who are on PlayStation or PC or Nintendo but we get along. I don’t know why it matters to these people, maybe this is just a mutual understanding from both sides that they just want to keep this war going for the fun of it.
@@tarheelpro87Same. Xbox just never grabs my attention. The only one I owned is the 360 version. But the rest just doesn't do anything for me cause it lacks many genres and gaming variety that Nintendo & Playstation has.
@@jaretco6423 yeah. I use my Xbox for every other major release and third party games, as well as backwards compatibility. Then have a Nintendo console as my secondary console for the exclusive games. I still use the Wii to this day for old Nintendo games like Super Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, and some casual sports games
Hi-Fi Rush showed what is wrong with games right now by being an example of what could be right. It is a smaller game that looks great, plays well and appeals to a niche audience that was likely developed on a relatively smaller budget. It probably took 2 years to do from start to finish. That is great. And no, it isn't gonna be a 10 millio copy seller. It wasn't meant to be. And there we go. Other games are meant to be the 10 million+ copy sellers. So they pump 5 or more years into making them. They get the $400M budget's. And at that point... they are so expensive and such a time sink they are HAVE to succeed. And so they get focus grouped into utter blandness. And sure, they can be fun - but they are iterative on what is out there and not a leap in games. So we end up with a general feeling of "Yeah, it's okay but kinda boring." It's kinda like movies. Back in the 80's and even 90's there were loads of movies out there. All were medium budgets and so they just pumped them out and some were good and some were bad but they were able to just throw a lot out there to see what stuck. But by the 2000's every movie had to start being a $1B box office juggernaut and so releases dwindled to a tenth of what they were. And the ones coming out became expensive to make and so were made by committee. And sure - some are fun but nobody can claim that the feeling of a movie made by an assembly line has started to creep into them for a few years now. We need a company with deep pockets to enter the scene and just say "We are gonna spend $200M to make 15 games this year - have fun" and get back to seeing what sticks.
Same. Have a budget and spread it over 4(or n) teams. Whatever team game flop, that team is disbanded and devs join the remaining teams. This goes on till there is only one team left. When their game flops too , the team is again divided into 4(or n) teams and process repeats.
FWIW Hi-Fi Rush took more than 2 years to make, it entered development in 2018 and came out in 2023 so around 5 years. It also probably didn't make money. On the flip side, having some games go cash neutral but bring people into more console gaming AND just have a great game is well worth having even for a company.
6:15 adendum. "These days if you are a console gamer you are a console gamer and you own a switch. If you are a pc gamer you're a pc gamer and you own a switch"
@@thechugg4372 that's jut not true. There are about 1 million steam decks in the wild, and 143.5 million Switch. Perhaps YOU have a deck as your second gaming choice, but do you seriously think that MOST people in the usa who have a second console it's the deck? Seriously? It's just a silly coment
@@KaitouKaiju Price being a big factor on that. Steamdeck is great to have a portable PC, but like, so is a laptop. If I'm spending anywhere from $350-$650 (and it'll be closer to that $650 figure, because storage of big PC games is invaluable), I'm just gonna buy a laptop that I already need and has multiple purposes besides gaming. Deck is a cool novelty, clearly inspired by Switch, but the price and exclusives of Switch kinda can't be beat. Steamdeck did release a cheaper model, but something about it has lost it's "cool, I need that" appeal over time.
the fact that the PS5 Pro does not come with a disc drive by default, and is sold for more than an actual game now is absolutely ridiculous . They're providing the option to use physical games, but they might as well be extorting you to use them, because they REALLY want to go full on digital only in the future. Don't be surprised if this becomes the norm for consoles moving forward.
@thesnesgeek You mean to tell me all the people that bought a PS5 don't want 4 or 5 massive games on their system at one time, and any time they get a new game, they have to delete one of those games? Color me surprised
@@WH250398 There is no reason it couldn't have been made to read CDs as Blu ray drive hardware is backward compatible with CDs and DVDs by design. Even less of an excuse because Sony developed the CD format in the first place. They could literally release a patch tomorrow that adds CD support but it's not profitable for them to do so.
Not worth it for Sony. The console has to be altered to accommodate it and then they have to raise the price point. PS3 could play all previous games and devs found that console too difficult to deal with. Also consoles without disc drives tells you where things are headed.
I'm left wondering why doesn't Sony or Xbox just make bite sized AA games? Like 'modernized' PS2 games in a way? They can experiment more without needing a crazy budget, they can give the games unique visuals without chasing after crazy high fidelity graphics, and they can most importantly just focus on making fun, good games. Do players really want more of the same AAA 3rd person open world games? Surely if these guys marketed and published these smaller, but great experiences people will give them a chance. If it's really true that "gamers are stupid and will eat anything they put out" why not maker smaller, cheaper games? 300+ million for a single game is fucking ridiculous and surely is hindering potential profits.
As someone who never owned a playstation the ps5 is amazing for me. Whole catalogue of ps4 and 5 games, remastered older playstation games, it was like a whole new world. But i can absolutely see why PS4 owners are very hesitant to upgrade. Its a big commitment given that a ps4 pro can basically play the same games as a ps5 bar a small handful of ps5 exclusives and for a lot of my friends who are sticking to their old consoles it's a pretty hard sell for what is effectively just a spec boost. Now xbox? Growing up i had friends who all had an xbox and they were constantly talking about how amazing it was. Now it feels like i literally haven't even HEARD the word "xbox" outside of a gamepass context in 4 years. What are they even doing man.
Halo is the only reason I've stuck with Xbox since 360. I really like it and I thought I'd be really upset about the franchise moving on without me but then we got 5 and Infinite. I play a lot of MCC though
At least you use it for gaming. I use mine to play online with my friends, but my PS5 is literally just a streaming device/ blu ray player at this point. It’s got good games, but once you beat the big single player experiences, there’s little reason to replay them so soon
Still have my original SNES and Sega. The smaller Nintendo still find myself playing those when not heavy sports seasons. The old systems were built to last. When I play games on the newer systems they are often the games that look older like beat em ups or Mighty Goose looking.
The lifespan of consoles is getting longer and Sony and Microsoft tried to ignore that. PS5 and Xbox Series could have been launched this year instead of 4 years ago.
I wouldn't go so far as "this year," but I do think Sony and Microsoft would've been better off targeting 2022 rather than 2020. Of course, that's totally in hindsight, they didn't know that a global pandemic would make the new hardware near-impossible to buy for the first two years anyway.
scott i cant believe you overlooked the incredible success that was the playstation portal!! such a momentous hardware release has surely shaken up the industry!!
2 million units isn't bad for what it is, especially with cloud game support added. Sony even considers it a success. It was never meant to do console numbers because it's not a console. Anyone buying one already has a PS5.
We need more variety like in the PS3 and PSVita generation. In fact, we really need a PSVita successor that ISNT entirely pointless. Nintendo needs some competition.
"we dont need exclusives so we can now have consoles that are sold exclusively based on power" *we stop doing as many exclusives* "now consoles are useless because you can just play on PC"
I hate this so fucking much. "Exlysives are bad. Stop doing them" people will bitch, then when companies listen and make everything multi platform, people bitch that there's no reason to buy a specific platform. The more exclusives the better, give me a reason to buy into one consoles ecosystem. compete for my money
@@bt3743EXACTLY Competition breeds innovation, that’s been the cornerstone of the console ecosystem since the days of Nintendo vs Sega. If you can play every game on every console, only one can really support itself, which causes an assload of problems for the others. When companies sit on their laurels and are allowed to simply consolidate power, you get the same stagnant bullshit every single time because there’s no reason for games to stand out and break the mold.
@@bt3743You're mixing two different crowds. No one that I've seen complain about lack of exclusives is complaining about games going multiplatform and vice-versa.
@spencermaley4390 You are looking at this from an entirely wrong and illogical perspective. If every game came out on every console, then console manufacturers would actually have to seriously compete with each other to offer the most value and the better ecosystem to the end consumer. Not to mention how exclusivity just cannibalizes the sales of the actual game itself, this isn't viable in an industry where game development is a process that now takes 3-6 years and costs hundreds of millions of dollars for every title.
I feel like the reason why Sony lost sight of how great they used to be with their games is because they try so hard to be like the other guys with its live service games maybe the greed for money idk. But its true that they used to release alot of great games in the PS3/PS4 era. Nintendo of course just release great single player games and dont try to test the waters with live service games
I just think Sony has ZERO idea what they're doing as of right now. Both Xbox and PlayStation have been so focused on graphics (and a lot of the gamer population...) that they forgot what makes games good.
I think ps users are a little upset over the remasters because ps keeps remastering the wrong games… there’s one game that deserves a remaster on the ps and I don’t even have to say what it is
As a fellow Ohioan, I am amazed y'all Michiganders do not know the joy of shopping at a Meijer. Uncultured state I guess. No wonder our Buckeyes whoop y'all every year.
I love my Series X so much because it's my entire 360 library from ten years ago (minus Sonic Racing with B-K) on there, through One, all the way to XS. It's got Rare Replay, so many good multiplatform games from PS4-PS5, and I just really love and prefer that controller. Xbox is capable of doing so much better, but for some reason they won't. (Halo Infinite multiplayer is fun too for a free game)
I play Halo infinite quite a bit, it's pretty good now, but it's also on Xbox one. The only True next-gen game I owned was Jedi Survivor...which is now on Xbox one. They haven't truly taken advantage of their hardware. I pray that the UE Halo game turns out well!
That’s the thing Xbox had the potential and still has the potential to kick Sony’s ass they don’t seem interested because believe or not while I will not buy an Xbox series X Xbox stuff have games that I want like Fable.
I just really dont like how similar this feels to the previous one. The Series X literally could've been a new version of the Xbox One and it could've made total sense
One thing about exclusives. It used to be that exclusives had features that simply weren't possible on another console. Be that music or graphics or gameplay made possible by that specific hardware. Nowadays it's pretty clear the only reason for exclusivity is $$$$.
I play my Series X way more than my PS5 just because of the greater backwards compatibility, honestly. Also it’s my Hitman machine. But that just shows how slow this generation has been if I’m largely playing old games…
Do not despair. Next years looks promising for XBox as many games were pushed to 2025-2026. However we are getting Indiana Jones in just a few weeks from now, which is something to consider looking forward to; I pre-ordered it last night.
Honestly my pc is not getting much use either. not much is coming out. my ps5 is mostly there just to play some of the back log of games i didn't play in the later half of the ps4's life cycle. I play poe and games like the first descendant but that's it. The main problem is companies are looking for money over making good games. BG3 which was made by a much smaller studio was a big slap in the face to most of the industry pushing live service and sequel trash.
I agree with the Gamepass value. I used to swear on gamepass, but I found myself mostly playing longer games like RPGs... and if you play one game at a time which'll take you a few months to beat, it's not worth it.... so I started collecting physical Xbox games, since they go DIRT CHEAP. From Persona, to Nier, to Final Fantasy, to Dragon Quest, to Kingdom Hearts, to Gears, to Forza, to Halo...lots of good stuff on there.
For The Last of Us remasters/remakes on the PS5, actually Naughty Dog did say that these were just side projects they started to increase their funds and avoid having to layoff employees while they began pre production on their next big game which wouldn't require a lot of game devs in that phase.
36:18 Hi Fi Rush was my game of the year in 2023, IDC what people say i love that game to pieces, and after i heard that Tango Gameworks got shutdown my heart didnt sink, it plummeted to the bottom of hell
I just finished listening to the podcast Firelink from Second Wind on this exact subject and added my input while they were doing it live. I've been doing PC and Switch gaming for years and got both a series X and a PS5 for different reasons separately, but with an ultimate goal of being console agnostic for this generation. It feels like that the needle just has not moved. Like, at all. It feels like more of the same that we've been for years on the first party front, with some unique hits in the second party front. Meanwhile, the indie scene is getting over saturated.
ps5 needs more variety. I hope they keep making stuff like astro bot, bring back gravity rush, make another infamous, do something with bloodborne. I like the cinematic experiences that they do rn, but it can't only be that
one thing that made 7th gen so good was that nintendo, sony and microsoft competed to see who had the best games with the aim of getting us gamers to buy their console.
While I understand the position of "Playstation games are safe/too expensive/boring", it does seem insane with 65 million units sold, and people always getting hyped for new games, that the reaction is still 'meh'.
Most people who bother to comment on a video are part of a minority. They're just the loudest (sometimes most passionate). New folks are also introduced to gaming every year. So whatever you deem "safe" will be completely fresh for them. I myself am in the younger crowd. To not experience fatigue, I stick to one Sony "cinematic" game. That was God of War for me because I was already a fan of the Greek games, so I was invested.
I got a Series S as a side console for game pass, but after a while I realized I was playing it way more than my PS5. I upgraded to the Series X and the PS5 was downgraded to side piece. I just find the Series X to be the way better console.
That's kind of how my console tendences were at the beginning of the generation. I played my series x more than my ps4 for a bit, but after a while I moved over to playing both on the pc and series x for my game pass games.
From what I gathered here, COVID messed up everything. It seems like both systems could’ve had big standout moments, but they haven’t happened yet or might not at all due to being super delayed.

This generation is just so underwhelming. It feels like there’s absolutely nothing to get unless you’re looking at third parties. Every single game you could want to buy these consoles for is already coming to PC and even more of the games are just remasters of PS4 games. Hoping Sony and Microsoft can pick up the pace, because this generation only has a couple years left and I’m doubtful they can make a worthwhile lineup
A good reason for this is that game devolpment is taking so long these days. Square enix who delivered a lot of the masterpieces of the PlayStation are now taking a long time to make games like ff7 remake trilogy it took 4 years to make ffvii rebirth and for the final part it’ll take more time since it’ll include the rest of the game which is pretty huge and has a lot of plot if you played the original on ps1. By the time it releases the hardware of the ps5 will be outdated
Well a lot of the PS4's major hitters came after the 4 year mark. I recall a lot of people upgraded cause of GTA V online initially but really sunk their teeth into the PS4 exclusives during year 5. I think we need to wait to properly assess this gen
I like how you say this but then refuse to name the games you think are good. Like name the stuff you think is drastically better than the first party out put.
I’m a Nintendo gamer since 35 years. Last year I got an Xbox series X and I love it. You nailed it it when you said “for the person who doesn’t care”. I really don’t. Game pass is amazing, the controller is great, quick resume is great and the series S is great for less money.
Adamtendo, nah the PS5 doesn’t have anything like gamepass ultimate and its backwards compatibility isn’t as good. As I said, I’ve only played on PC for the past decades and love catching up on Halo and all the multi platform games. For me the Xbox X is amazing and the best option
@@tor2919Your comment makes no sense. If you used to only play on PC there is literally no point in getting an Xbox, seeing as all the exclusives (including every halo game which you apparently need to catch up on) are on steam, and you can get gamepass on PC.
@@aegisleague4053- That would basically hold back the PS6 because developers would be tempted to make a game closer to the previous consoles technical specifications in order to get the most sales, rather than making an excellent PS6 showcase that they will struggle to adapt to the older consoles? Square basically didn’t get their projected profits off the latest Final Fantasy 7 game because it WAS a PS5 only exclusive game and that led to them breaking up with the Sony exclusive paradigm.
@@aegisleague4053 - Thanks for the condescension, but product development isn’t rocket science. You make the unit that suits the most needs for the least money. That means that it’s economically more viable to make the lowest specification game they can for the widest user base and then simply do a bit of upscaling or technical finessing and claim it as THE redesigned and rebooted top tier game product for the latest generation of console gaming machine like PS5 Pro for example? It’s much easier and more cost effective to do that than to build a game specifically for the PS5 Pro and it’s smaller user base and then try to shoe horn that high spec game into a lower tech console like basic PS5 or even PS4. This is exactly the problem that has held Xbox Series X games back because they have to be able to run on the lower specifications of the Xbox Series S as well and the end result is that developers simply make the most basic specification of game that will tick just enough boxes to get that Xbox Series X top tier gaming title while actually being low key designed for the Xbox Series S and all that entails. Almost half of the Sony PlayStation PSN user base is still rocking a PS4 console and it’s much easier to design a PS4 game and buff it up a little to call it a PS5 reboot than to make a top tier PS5 game and then make it work somehow on lower spec consoles. This was a problem that CD Projekt RED had when trying to get their Cyberpunk 2077 game to run well on the older consoles.
The cross generation releases made sense when it was difficult to get a ps5. Now, when they’re more readily available, it prevents too many games from fully taking advantage of the console’s hardware.
Remember how the dreamcast felt like a half step between the ps1 generation and ps2 generation? Thats how the ps5 and XSX feel. It still feels like we're waiting for the "real" next gen to launch. I think that's why this gen is gonna be a short gen
The problem is that it takes longer and longer to create big AAA games, which means fewer and fewer games per generation. Example we went from getting 3 uncharted games + Last of us from one studio within one generation to getting 1 remake + 1 collection disc.
Playstation not only bought exclusive rights to a lot of Japanese games, but also used their power to pressure developers not to release on Xbox. Imagine if Xbox had done this, they would’ve been villainized for sure.
Rift apart was my system seller and it’s still my favorite game on the ps5 It does make me sad that many things are transitioning to digital only. I enjoy owning and collecting things
Nope,The PS4 was a banger interms of games. I have been a PC player all my life and I went so long without buying the PS4 but I had to in order to play spiderman, Zero dawn and the last of us. The Xbox on the other hand was a complete disappointment. Nothing on Xbox was going to make me buy the console. The only game that could have convince me to buy Xbox was the Forza series But guess what it was on PC so what even the point
No one gonna talk about scalpers keep buying the consoles instead of gamers then when Xbox and Playstation release a games not many people has the console to play with?
Sony's only unique title this generation is Returnal and Scott forgot about it, pretty much sums up why they keep regurgitating the same ideas and games over and over. Astro bot was great as well tbf and I enjoyed Helldivers.
The PS5 was an amazing console for me, but that's because I didn't have a PS4 or an Xbox One and basically skipped that generation. I know that's not everyone's experience, but I did enjoy using my PS5 as a PS4 with a little bit of future proofing.
I think one big factor about this is that a bunch of big games suchs as GOW:R and Metaphor Re:Fantazio are also being released on the previous gen as well as current gen. It's also kinda sorta like a Wii U situation where tons of the games on Wii U were similar to what was on Wii or 3DS, which did not incentivize people to pick up the new machine. Also no price drops either. There also wasnt much of a graphical leap either, at least compared from something like PS1 to Ps2/PS2 to PS3 or N64 to GCN.
The amount of knowledge Scott have and research he does makes me respect him more with each video. Also his injection of personal experiences and witty humor, I could listen to him forever. Thanks for all the amazing content, Scott! Stay awesome!
As an Xbox fan, I have to agree. The first party department has been lacking on Xbox. Scott described it perfectly too, modern Halo feels like a corporate entity that just exists, “appeals” to what’s popular in video games today but doesn’t really have much passion in it. I’m just sticking with Xbox cause it was my first major console, and I don’t want to lose all my progress, friends, and purchases. Plus Xbox still has some selling points for me, primarily backwards compatibility, quick resume, and I’m not the biggest fan of PlayStation exclusives to the point where I’ll buy a PS5 and take up space that could’ve been used for a Nintendo Switch or something. But I still enjoy Halo the Master Chief Collection, Halo Infinite is an occasional pleasure to play with my friends, and I actually enjoyed Starfield. People wanted something vastly different, I personally liked the way Bethesda did their RPGs in the past and didn’t want them to change too much. Plus, since games like Elder Scrolls 6 are coming to Xbox and PC only, yeah. But, even then Xbox could be doing better. I liked Starfield, but I’d still take Skyrim or Fallout in a heartbeat. Halo Infinite I’ll install for a few months, get bored, and don’t play it again for a year. It seems like there’s not much hope for Halo’s future right now. To be honest, once I get the money, I’m getting a PC. I’ll keep an Xbox or Nintendo console for casual play or split screen with my friends and family, but I’d prefer a PC. It gets both consoles’ games anyway these days, no online subscription fee, mod capabilities, indie and fan games not available on console, emulation, and I can always upgrade it to keep up with future games. But for now, I’m sticking with Xbox as my primary console, and Nintendo secondary. But both PlayStation and Xbox aren’t like they used to be in the 6th and 7th generation. Nintendo has been completely consistent at least.
Literally the only thing that sold me on either console this generation was Sonic Unleashed getting a 60 FPS patch on Xbox Series X|S. Nothing else either console offered was interesting enough for me to consider them, especially with having decent (for the time) gaming computers.
It’s so weird to think that this generation has already gone on for 4 years. It feels like only just started. This might just be because I’m not super into the PlayStation and Xbox in general, or because life has been going at a very inconsistent pace ever since the pandemic, but I still see the Nintendo Switch as part of the 8th generation in the same way that the Virtual Boy and N64 were both part of the 5th generation.
It’s time for SEGA to make a comeback. Imagine this company, lurking in the shadows. Allowing their games to be third party on all consoles. Gaining information. Learning from all the mistakes Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have made, also learning from their successes. Developing a next gen console with all their strengths… then BAM! SEGA Omega releases. (Name is an homage to the Genesis).
I got my series x from launch and it was an upgrade from the xbox one s.a.d(one S all digital), and yet i haven't felt like there's this pinnacle moment of next generation, there's alot from the lost of creativity and shock factor. I should probably get a pc.
We are at the point of diminishing returns with graphics. Each generational step will feel smaller. The eye can only notice so many increases in polygons and pixels.
Days Gone is an absolutely amazing game, played it on my ps4 and even with the 30 frames I enjoyed riding around in the motorcycle just absolutely destroying zombies. Wished playstation put more through into that title and allowed them a budget
I feel like Microsoft made a bad move halting their free backwards compatibility updates. It was awesome for me playing older games at 60 or even 120 fps with updated resolutions and HDR. It made most games feel like new and saved so much money compared to Sony's remaster approach
I have a 360 , ps3 and the switch. I love my 360 because of backwards compatibility. Found ultimate Spider-Man on original Xbox but you’re right them abandoning updates has stopped me from even buying some older games
Exactly! My kids got Game Pass with their Xbox Series S for Christmas and it was awesome because they had so many older games that I fell in love with games I played years ago. Someone could literally play the entire history of Xbox with free updates compared to Nintendo re-releasing (for the 200th time) Super Mario Bros on the Switches predecessor for $20
I feel leadership quality in these big studios have been subpar. The decisions they make are so bizarre to anyone who has even a rudimentary knowledge of the industry. Not just in gaming but in tech in general. It's just people who are super into stocks and does stuff that's good for stocks but horrible for the business and get pikachu face when stuff fails.
The only reason to get a PS5 was FFVII Rebirth. The (probably) 2 years of exclusivity was supposed to sell a lot of systems. Because Rebirth was made in Unreal, it could have been released on PC same day, but Sony knew they had nothing else
Honestly the exclusivity agreements hardly matter for PC since SE doesn't do day one releases for mainline Final Fantasy games on PC even after XVI exclusivity expired it still took months to come to PC.

I love how this drops the same day Sony announced we will get at least one big in house single player game pr year... Wooooow Sony... One?? Are you sure you are not spoiling us? Remember when games had trilogies on the same console
@@spencermaley4390 Every PlayStation has been successful because it’s been the cheap option to play the widest variety of games. Sony’s failure this generation was not being affordable enough. We're 4 years into the generation and most people still call it "next-gen"
This generation has to last longer than any before, there is no point for a PS6 or Xbox (insert X name here). Like not for 5+ years at least
Because XB1 and PS4 only stopped getting first party games last year and PS4 is still getting third party games because the install base is huge

I think HD development costs have made AA projects simply unfeasible. You're better off looking for higher end indies.
It's why the smash hits lately have come from smaller studios and big studios willing to make a 15 million dollar movie or a smaller scale game.
Nintendo is actually a perfect model for how to do this. Even there bigger Mario stuff is 1/10nth of budget. And still hd, pretty, innovative games.
HINT: Always be a generation behind to get a massive library of completed games for 20$. It’s the best way to game.

So we end up with a general feeling of "Yeah, it's okay but kinda boring."
It's kinda like movies.
That's honestly such a good idea. Like get a bunch of AA studios to make a UFO 50
it actually took 5 years to develop, but i wouldn't expect scott the woz commenters to know what they're talking about
Same. Have a budget and spread it over 4(or n) teams. Whatever team game flop, that team is disbanded and devs join the remaining teams. This goes on till there is only one team left. When their game flops too , the team is again divided into 4(or n) teams and process repeats.
At least most of the team that made Hi-Fi Rush was salvaged from Microsoft being stupid.

I think ps users are a little upset over the remasters because ps keeps remastering the wrong games… there’s one game that deserves a remaster on the ps and I don’t even have to say what it is

Uncharted 2?
Does said game happen to involve… birth of a gored nature?

As a Michigander, hearing Scott say he walked into a Meijer caught my attention, and then I remembered...
He's an Ohioan.
Too bad the dpad sucks because it’s clicky and not mushy which severely hurts the durability. Thank goodness for third party controllers
Yeah I prefer 360 games anyway at least now some of them have FPS and resolution boosts
I love both consoles. Including Nintendo
It kinda is. At least X1 had exclusives
is "The last of us, Horizon, God of War" the new "Halo, Gears of War, Forza"?
Forza Horizon 🥁ba-dum-tss🥁
Add up how many games in each series.
Ghost of Tsuhima and Astro Bot also deserves to be in that category.
@@brytilaarhow they are not being remade every 2 seconds
@brytilaar huh? There is 1 astro bot game, and all ghost has is a ps5 upgrade not a remake or remaster
Agreed. The only next gen game I played on Xbox was Jedi Survivor, which just came out on Xbox one.
BG3 which was made by a much smaller studio was a big slap in the face to most of the industry pushing live service and sequel trash.
im in the same boat to be honest. I just bought sonic unleashed because apparently it's 60fps.
@@Kaiber132 let me tell you, I do not have a PS5 nor a Xbox, but I'm honestly inclined to buy a Series S just to play Unleashed in a smooth 60fps
Shout out to when Xbox announced Silksong would come out within a year of that one showcase and it's been two years since that announcement...
I agree with the Gamepass value. I used to swear on gamepass, but I found myself mostly playing longer games like RPGs... and if you play one game at a time which'll take you a few months to beat, it's not worth it.... so I started collecting physical Xbox games, since they go DIRT CHEAP. From Persona, to Nier, to Final Fantasy, to Dragon Quest, to Kingdom Hearts, to Gears, to Forza, to Halo...lots of good stuff on there.
hand acting is a 9.8/10
For The Last of Us remasters/remakes on the PS5, actually Naughty Dog did say that these were just side projects they started to increase their funds and avoid having to layoff employees while they began pre production on their next big game which wouldn't require a lot of game devs in that phase.
36:18 Hi Fi Rush was my game of the year in 2023, IDC what people say i love that game to pieces, and after i heard that Tango Gameworks got shutdown my heart didnt sink, it plummeted to the bottom of hell

RIP saint rows the price went from 80 dollar to 8 dollar
17:42 HEAVENLY SWORD'S FIRST MENTION SINCE 2012 LETS GOOOOOOO
While I understand the position of "Playstation games are safe/too expensive/boring", it does seem insane with 65 million units sold, and people always getting hyped for new games, that the reaction is still 'meh'.
Eh, vocal minority I guess. At the end of the day it’s the die-hards that watch stuff like this and partake in gaming-era talk.
Most people are happy that it plays the newest cod and fifa
I got a Series S as a side console for game pass, but after a while I realized I was playing it way more than my PS5. I upgraded to the Series X and the PS5 was downgraded to side piece. I just find the Series X to be the way better console.
That's kind of how my console tendences were at the beginning of the generation. I played my series x more than my ps4 for a bit, but after a while I moved over to playing both on the pc and series x for my game pass games.
Bring back Ape Escape! DO NOT FORGET SLY COOPER!
Sony has a lot they should bring back. For me, it's Twisted Metal, Forbidden Siren, InFamous & Gravity Rush.
Jak and daxter, ps5 camera v2 with games on it, killzone with free modes

By the time it releases the hardware of the ps5 will be outdated
then take a break from gaming that simple or play older games on pc like I dont know what to tell u dude its the reality of things lol
Well a lot of the PS4's major hitters came after the 4 year mark. I recall a lot of people upgraded cause of GTA V online initially but really sunk their teeth into the PS4 exclusives during year 5. I think we need to wait to properly assess this gen
Bloodborne has entered the chat.
I wish they made the series s 12gb ram instead of 10gb and gave the X vram
Xbox series X is the biggest waste of money the PS5 still hasn’t been great, but it’s a hell of a lot better than Xbox.
If you used to only play on PC there is literally no point in getting an Xbox, seeing as all the exclusives (including every halo game which you apparently need to catch up on) are on steam, and you can get gamepass on PC.
i love imagining you just on the floor recording all your videos
Imagining? No need
Of the two I’d say I care more for PS5, but I do wonder what the heck they could even do afterwards, especially when the PS5 pro requires a mortgage.
Make a PS6 and keep selling games for 4 and 5 at lower specs like how phones and computers work
@@aegisleague4053- That would basically hold back the PS6 because developers would be tempted to make a game closer to the previous consoles technical specifications in order to get the most sales, rather than making an excellent PS6 showcase that they will struggle to adapt to the older consoles?
Square basically didn’t get their projected profits off the latest Final Fantasy 7 game because it WAS a PS5 only exclusive game and that led to them breaking up with the Sony exclusive paradigm.
@@PaulusAlone you don’t really know how development works, do you?
I don’t care about Xbox at all, but then I’ve always been more of a PlayStation guy when it comes to both Xbox and PlayStation.
I know it's multiplad, but Robocop Rogue City is a fantastic game on both PS5 and Series S/X!

Returnal was the main reason I bought a PS5 and still feel it's the best reason to own one.
Playstation not only bought exclusive rights to a lot of Japanese games, but also used their power to pressure developers not to release on Xbox. Imagine if Xbox had done this, they would’ve been villainized for sure.
Rift apart was my system seller and it’s still my favorite game on the ps5
It does make me sad that many things are transitioning to digital only. I enjoy owning and collecting things
I'm fully convinced that the PS4 hype and success was only because Microsoft dropped the ball with the One so hard
In the US yes. Everywhere else PS is a household name.
The only game that could have convince me to buy Xbox was the Forza series
But guess what it was on PC so what even the point

Really funny timing for this video after microsoft just announced their new "Everything is an Xbox" marketing campaign
I keep telling everybody, pick almost any year from 2000 to 2005 and look at how many bangers released each year.
We were eating so good back then.
Agree, even the Ps2 launch window in itself was epic. Because we got 29 games that required a ps2 to play.
13:50 People in places that don’t have Playstation network are pretty pissed about this
The amount of knowledge Scott have and research he does makes me respect him more with each video.
It’s a good thing Nintendo never does remakes, remasters or the same 5 franchises over and over. That would be crazy!
Literally the only thing that sold me on either console this generation was Sonic Unleashed getting a 60 FPS patch on Xbox Series X|S. Nothing else either console offered was interesting enough for me to consider them, especially with having decent (for the time) gaming computers.
Of all the games, really? That one?
maybe its not their fault the games they're releasing aren't your personal taste?
I think the PS5 Pro exists to prep us for how much the PS6 will cost.
Alternate title: scott yells at controllers for an hour
Sega can hardly do great as a game developer. They're carried by Atlus and RGG who they have been meddling with too much lately.
Console wars have never been so boring.
I got my series x from launch and it was an upgrade from the xbox one s.a.d(one S all digital), and yet i haven't felt like there's this pinnacle moment of next generation, there's alot from the lost of creativity and shock factor. I should probably get a pc.
You got starfield with thousands of mods already, you just need to add two coolers to your box, top and bottom.
And xvi to a lesser extent it’s better than XV but not in the level of vi,Vii,Viii,IX, and X
@@staringcorgi6475 agreed. It's such a slimy tactic

That would be back when development was cheap and quick. They’re doing what they can.
Clearly, they haven’t ACTUALLY learned anything from the PS3’s failures.
@@spencermaley4390 Every PlayStation has been successful because it’s been the cheap option to play the widest variety of games. Sony’s failure this generation was not being affordable enough.
