The whole summoner playtsyle in general can be built on still huh? Now that I think about it there's not many - maaaybe 5 games? Cool idea so we'll see how other games try this idea out
Very much so. Capcom was heavy then on it better sell big or it doesn't go anywhere. Also, not sure if they only licensed it for one game and didn't want to bother again combined with sales.
Capcom didn't forget about Chaos Legion, it's that they don't own the IP. Chaos Legion is a light novel that they adapted into a game. That being said - Astral Chain and V from DMC5 have already advanced the summoner playstyle. Overall there is cool stuff in the game, but like you said - the grind is mindnumbingly stupid and by the time you get all of the tools you're bored to death. Add to this that after beating the final boss you cannot reselect older levels and you're directly booted to the title screen. Some of the cool stuff comes from the Claw legion (Flawed). It has a move, called "Despise" that lets you press the jump button during any attack animation of your basic combo chain to immediately cancel it into a backflip that deals electric damage. Another cool thing is that your double jump also deals damage so you can use it to "stomp" on an enemy or juggle them in the air. The Malice legion (Crossbow guys) can turn your lock on into a pull move that can be transformed into a groundslam if timed correctly (game explains it really badly). Once you unlock all Legions' "Spirit Transfer" upgrades you end up with a pretty decent moveslist that lets you be more open with which legion loadout to pick, but the true crime of the game is Arcia. Once you unlock her you find out she's a walking killing machine BUT her lack of a proper lock on makes her dodge moves really pointless (she has these really nice sidesteps that let you stay in range for kicks). However her coolest trick remains being able to go into prone position from her kick launcher and fire away at a launched enemy while being somewhat safe on the ground for a bit since some attacks will miss you. I have some footage of trying to freestyle and combo in this game and it's not that completely flat, but you reeeeaaaaly have to push it yourself for something interesting to happen. And I am leaving you with this absolutely pointless tit-bit: The main menu sounds are the same as the main menu sounds in Dark Souls 1.
@@catsorafgc So it may have just been the writer was well known and took part in the audio drama (if memory serves), not that it was his original creation adapted. It would just then be another IP Capcom does nothing with. They're as bad as Microsoft with buried IP.

Amazing art style n stand out music. Honestly I can't blame you. They nailed the look n tone of it all to make it stand out even to this day. Now that's worth remembering
I'm actually one those people who like the grinding in this game. To me Chaos Legion just have enough amount of satisfaction in its gameplay where it actually makes me enjoy grinding it. The combat punchyness, the legions variety, and enemy design all contribute in making the grind feels really satisfying for me. I find it similar to how other people find it satisfying to play Vampire Survivor back then
I feel that Astral Chain was almost going to be the gameplay Sequel of this game, at least going for the concept art we have seen! That's how I'm prepping up my fan sequel fic, Astral Sea...
I still play Chaos Legion till this day since '06 along with the first three DMC games. Really dig the summoning system and I wish this game got a second chance at life.
You aren't weak. Maybe a little at the start but you get stronger than most legions. Mashing? Maybe Malice's Force attack but that's it. All assists have i-frames. The grind is nowhere near as bad as people claim. AAA+ ranking on stage 7 is worth 20 million a run, at around 7 mins. Ground Zero counter the metal soldiers on Side B. Easily build 5 million. Beat the stage fulfilling the AAA+ requirements for a 4x multiplier. Hatred's assist doesnt work on every enemy. The only bosses it works on are stage 2, 3, 4, 6 (though those are regular special enemies), 8 and 12. The basic green spiders don't have much too them but plenty of others do. The monster generators can be near instantly defeated by Malice in sniper mode by hitting the metal spike atop them. The enemies aren't tanky sponges. This is a common beginner complaint with no knowledge of the mechanics. They can be weak to metal or organic type attacks or wiped out by counters hits. The boost in the English version is actually irrelevant.
I love your channel man, such a cool idea to make combat reviews/analysis. I was going to ask for an Evil West video since I was interested in that one, but it turns out you already covered it lol. Keep it up!

Hoh! That's interesting! A view into action games with a combat style where summoning or having a secondary character as part of the moveset is a big part, like Folklore, Astral Chain and Bayonetta 3. Haven't watched it yet but i'm quite interested.
Hey, ini of Cooliniau here !! While I can find certain key points in this video understandable when regarding the NA release... I think it would have been worth it to: - Cover how the actual physical Lock-On works and its benefits for melee combat (ie. letting you quickly loop ground melee attacks) - Cover the "Enchant" stat of the Legions, since those primarily increase the base moveset pool of Sieg & thus the combo potential, and... - Dedicate a somewhat lengthy section of the video to the Japanese version of Chaos Legion, as the playthrough experience is far-FAR better. I've honestly been having a blast with playing & figuring out the game's mechanics as well as combo play around the 1st half of 2024, and I find that what the NA Team did for Chaos Legion's release in that area of the world was pretty effin' detrimental in the long run. EXP Points & Enemy HP + Endurance are obviously handled better in the JP ver. as you implied in the video-however, this in my POV does wonders for actually experimenting with the different Legions and seeing whichever one sticks with you. It's BECAUSE EXP Points being easier to obtain + enemies not taking 1 billion years to die that I was able to have the good time I'm describing here. I plan on uploading some more videos on it soon, but I currently have 2 videos up that showcase what I've been looking into in regards to combat. While I don't find the enemy design to be absolutely *crazy*, I still find it good that most of them have their own quirks we'd have to deal with-which lends itself well to varied encounters whenever the game decides to pool a bunch of them together. I'd say the most standout enemy to me mechanics-wise would be the regular Knight that we see during Stage 10 and up-their moveset seems pretty interesting to me. But yes, really I'm glad more people are discovering the game-however, I'd also want to make sure we find out + share on as much as it does manage to do as well. Things get rather cool on the Sieg side of things than some folks realize !! - ini
From a random person on the internet, i find it heartening that there are folks so enamored and intrigued by lesser-talked about games to the point they want to look in more detail on what makes things tick. Wish you well and good luck in further research and recordings.
The grind is really not as bad as people make it out to be. I can max everything in around an hour using the stage 7 side B method. And by the time I get there I already have tons of stuff leveled due to counter hits and good gameplay. The enemies do not take long to kill. They have weaknesses and counter hits destroy them. Maybe at the very start there is one large type that takes longer than most but even then it's not even that bad.
I watched the video in full now and must say I'm very critical of it, that it feels like you're missing things or leaving things out. Perhaps unduly so because i've not actually played Chaos Legion. Reason for my critical stance is twofold: One being that I remember watching a video from a guy who dearly loved the game and took a deep dive into it over a year ago. The other being that the summoning playstyles in action games are a weird and strange different beast, to the point that I wonder to what extent we can compare it to other action games and what exactly we need to look for in this kind of playstyle. Plus, I feel like all the Summons must really be looked at in an individual light, like weapons or characters in other action games. But I remember from that aforementioned video that leveling up and grinding in this game, is very annoying. In fact, your video has made me look up that older video and I think i've found it. It's very much worth looking through, especially the combat section. This man goes into depth about the Legions, their functions, how certain legions are strong against specific enemy types, and other mechanics and observations that I haven't seen in your Combat Overview but was kind of expecting. Some things may be new to you, some criticism may overlap and some may be entirely different due to the personal experiences. th-cam.com/video/CH1PLQ3XcxQ/w-d-xo.html I concede that i've got the advantage here of having encountered this video in the past, and the disadvantage of not having direct experience with the game to make proper arguments on my own. Some of the most notable downsides of Chaos Legion, mainly the grinding for the final summon Thanatos, is not unknown to me. This coupled with the rekindled knowledge from that other man's video and especially his notes on Level 4, makes me understand that first impressions of this game were not positive for you. I can also understand that if these things are not clearly explained, one's enjoyment of a game and willingness to engage with it, to explore its tricks and the like, takes a hit as well. Like enemies having unique behaviours and aspects to them to make them more managable, the summoning of Legions bringing forth a knockback attack, type weakness and resistances and the like. Such things I would not have found out on myself the first time through either, and neither would I have been quick to replay it. Yet again, it's through happenstance that I found that other video and had the interest to watch it-- if I never did, I may have written Chaos Legion off like you have. The point i'm messily trying to make is that I think you could very much benefit from seeking out more experienced people or in-depth reviews, to get a more informed idea of what is capable in a game you are making a video on. I'm well aware that that may be much easier said than done. The best place to quickly ask for feedback is the Character Action game subreddit, but I know that Reddit has a partially infamous reputation and understand that you'd rather be doing more fun things with your time if a game at first impressions has gotten your goat.. My apologies for not being as enthousiastic or positive as I usually am with your comments on videos. Doubly so if i'm actually being condescending. That's really not my intent, but I don't have the proper hang of balancing how I think I come across versus how I actually come across in more firm messages. I can understand if this is leaving you in a sour impression, but I hope that the essence of this message has proven something to think about in a positive way.
I played the game and yeah he missed a lot. Once he said he only used like two legions I went oh no. He clearly was missing key moves in his kit from the gameplay and also was struggling because if you don't power up Sieg through learning new moves you get screwed late game as legions become less powerful as the game goes on so you will have to spend more time with just Sieg who becomes crazy strong especially when you get good at landing a charge attack as a counter for bonus damage a move I don't think he had considering what I saw. To be fair he also missed stuff in Samurai champloo and he got some details wrong about dodging in Astral chain.
The first level is cool because it gives you access to the strongest Legion in the game and it's screen clearing laser spam of death. And then you lose it and getting it back is entirely optional.
I think the worst thing about this is the sepheroth rip-off of a villain. I was hoping for a sword fight but nah it's just an annoying mage boss. But yeah hatred was the best summon here since it's grab is a parry and that made its depth go from zero/10 to 1/10

A lot of this sounds like a skill issue. Like watching your game play was painful. First the reason you are having so many issues with metallic enemies and enemies in general is probably because you only invested in the starter legions which is bad as this leads to your Sieg being really weak. This is important as Legions in general scale poorly even if maxed so by end game the game slowly shifts from your legions doing most of the work to using mostly just Sieg and saving meter for the special attacks where Sieg attacks and then summons a legion to follow up. Edit: Also both the shoulder tackle and charge hit are extremely useful when partied with getting a critical via counter as these do crazy good damage to begin with and since your charge attack is like a mega man buster where you can move while charging you can move around till the enemy goes to strike them blast them away with an insanely powerful counter hit.
Would've been cool to see a special edition where they fix the balancing n maybe make the 2nd char playable throughout the entire game. Something like that can definitely save this game
Soon! I just finished castlevania curse of darkness the other day n now I'm getting that video put together. But after that we'll fllw up w astral chain!
I'm not sure if you played this game before or first time, but I'd expect you to have a bad time if you only used two legions. That's a bizarre choice and will effect how combat goes and enjoyment. Not saying the game doesn't have issues, then again, this is an overview, not analysis.
Chaos Legion is just one of those games that could have really benefited from a sequel. The base idea is cool and could have been built on easily.

A lot of this sounds like a skill issue. Like watching your game play was painful.
First the reason you are having so many issues with metallic enemies and enemies in general is probably because you only invested in the starter legions which is bad as this leads to your Sieg being really weak.

Generally as long as you are killing regularly and picking up chests and ecp gems and stat ups you won't need to grind much especially since side B mission unlocked later game has XL.

No Switch port yet?...
Would've been cool to see a special edition where they fix the balancing n maybe make the 2nd char playable throughout the entire game. Something like that can definitely save this game

Astral chain when
