This game was my 2000s edgy goth opera aesthetic for over 5 years It may not be considered great, but it will forever have a spot in my heart it is still peak in my eyes, also the soundtrack slapped
Chaos Legion is one of those nostalgic hidden gems for me. I still find myself going back to it every few years or so, it's like comfort food. Thank you for highlighting it! Also, good content in general, you deserve a lot more subs. Keep up the good work, man!
I remember renting this one as a kid. I knew the plot was straight up buns even back then. But maxed out Hatred legion was cracked and I had fun near one-shotting everything.
This game was a 10/10 for me, probably a 7/10 in general. Such a great hack and slash, plenty of secrets and power ups, and a whole “legion” of cool ass helpers
Its called chaos legion, so you dont need a shop, or special moves, throw electricity to the target and command your legion to destroy it, thats how you heal, and you can always play previous missions to grind, test, experiment, and collect additional items. It is what it is, in its own universe, perfectly simple, fun and fine game, but people act like its another devils may cry game, and its not, so they got wrong base, wrong idea, wrong tactic, wrong moves, everything wrong. Yes you got sword and moves, but this game was made to play with another hand, a glove is it, to call legions, command them between attack or defend, send them out or pull them close, spam their actions and walk like a king trough clean path. I liked Guilt, i think its 5 of them together, but many of my friends beat the whole game with archers, long distance cleaning. But people who are expecting different game are using legions like hand grenade, like first mission and Thanatos didnt show you? Various legions have different strategy, attack, defend, counter, range, movement, agility, skipping, etc., so you can grind and use what you like, its not like one is stronger then another, it depends on what you like, they are just fragments to be used.
Definitely one of my favorite games. Sure, levelling up got tedious at times (especially for Ultimate Thanatos), but the soundtrack always kept me going. It would have been nice if Sieg was given more mobility like Dante or Virgil from DMC while his legions were active, but the game is called Chaos Legion for a reason. I had no issue with the map selector because it added to the replay value. As well as experimenting with different legions on different enemies. Even now, I'm seeing movesets I never thought of when watching others' uploads years later. Been thinking about buying this again for nostalgia's sake. It was far from perfect, but good enough for its target audience. Too bad it's not available on the PS store like other crappier games that I can't imagine anyone ever heard of, let alone playing them. 8.5 out of 10 for me. Appreciate this upload ❤.
At least the soundtrack of Chaos Legion was pretty great! Definitely surpasses the game it was made for, because I find myself listening to it more than wanting to play the game itself.
I actually really loved this game LOL. I even intentionally made a separate save for my baby Thanatos to go back on. One thing that this has over DMC back then was it has free camera angles
Once upon a time, I had played the demo for this game that featured a stage with a striking, gothic chruch environment and an absolute banger of a stage/battle theme, all while trying desperately to wrestle with the gameplay and try in vain to figure out why enemies weren't flinching, weren't taking much damage, and why such a short corridor stage and single bossfight took me nearly an hour or so to beat. Frustrations aside, it stuck with me, and though I'd never again play the demo, I couldn't ever help but keep my eyes peeled for the full game. Many, MANY years later (around 2017, I believe), while perusing through a thrift store for 5$ video games, I came across a near mint copy of Chaos Legion (along with Street Fighter Alpha 10th Anniversary Collection and MVC2... yes, THAT MVC2 on the PS2), and snatched them up quicker than my mind could follow. Played the absolute hell out of it, learned how it ACTUALLY works, and found it to be much more of a hidden gem than I initially would think. I then got to the stage in the demo, was gobsmacked to learn that it was the last full stage of the game (what a bold move for a demo), armed with experience from playing the full game, and had WAY more fun than I had previously. Not to mention enjoyed the aesthetics of said stage FAR more than I did way back when. This is not my favorite game of all time, but I'll defend it to the end. This game deserves WAY more love than it gets.
@@Natquerx Oh, most definitely, but I don't think it was completely ignored. I'm almost certain Devil May Cry 5 has traces of Chaos Legion DNA flowing through the blood in that beast of a game through V's gameplay, which probably would have been more of a 1-to-1 translation if V had the ability to equip different demons (I actually heard a rumor that it was intended for V to utilize different demons as the story progressed, with Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare being this story centric ones).
Chaos Legion is one of those games that felt like it was distilled 90s era tropes. It's all about the moody protagonist, the distraught heroine and the "world is just a dark bad place" vibe. Even now, as a 30+ year old dude, I can't help but love this kind of thing. While I don't think Chaos Legion is a masterpiece, I don't think it's a bad game either, but you do have to be the right audience for it.
I totally understand. I think the real issue was just the way they went about the map selector which could turn some people away. I can definitely admit action games during the early 2000s had terrible stories all around, but it was the gameplay that saved them.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. This game was previewed by the anime magazine NewType and got me really hyped. I was so damn disappointed with this game but I get a good laugh with my brothers every time we think about how NewType made this game look so cool. This game is so damn mediocre. I would love for Capcom to include a Chaos Legion character if they ever make a Marvel vs Capcom 4!
Best music is in the Kuzca Cave. Ailein Duinn. As for the voice acting, Delacroix’s EN VA is Josh Gilman - the original VA for Angeal Hewley in CCFF7 (PSP). Arcia’s EN VA is the older sister of Ariel Winter aka Sofia the First. Sieg’s EN VA was the protag of that one action cartoon in Cartoon Network from the same era as Chaos Legion. His JP VA and singer of the Chaos Legion theme song was a well-known J-Dorama actor but was arrested for drugs in the 2010s.
I still remember me and my boys in secondary school passed around a bootleg CD of the cracked PC version of this game. We did not understand what was happening in the game and we blamed it on our limited English at that time, but when I replayed this later I realized that it was really due to bad presentation.
I loved this game as a kid and spamming the bomb ability and backflip is exactly how i remember it I never did know about damage types and kept wondering why the generator things were so tanky
I fully enjoyed the abomination, thanks. I didn't care about stage select nor consumables so call me boss. The only gripe I had with the game was that Sieg only had one offensive moveset that you could only spice up with utility moves but the main gimmick of the game was using the legions so it is what it is. I feel like you didn't use actual fighter legions (sword, claw, power) that could make the job easier by diverting enemies and doing more damage in the long run since they don't have the long cooldown of blasphemy. Blasphemy is good but it's best application is against the bosses/armored enemies, but claw(my favorite) is better overall imo - it has stun and it drills monster weak spots really good while not being that useful in "free attack" mode(none of them are imho except Thanatos and maxed Guilt). Maxed out Guilt units shred ground enemies like crazy. The game is made that way for you to grind the monster generators for EXP and upgrade legions, so that your attacks are just a bonus - not the main focus. Thanatos is a real "platinum" trophy in this game and the only legion that evolves instead of increasing unit number, I really enjoyed its power in comparison to the "lesser" legions.
Your comment about the fighter legions is spot on. I took a complete different approach to the OP and actually wasn’t fond of the blasphemy legion play style. Guilt was a staple legion and swapping to an “off-hand” legion as needed was great. Flawed were situationally great as you pointed out. The OP didn’t mention the monster weakness types at all. Guilt shredded flesh types with constant DPS and other legions made up for their lackluster performance against metal/armor based ones.
I remember maxing out every legion before the final boss. I was so op i barely remember that fight, thanatos was so strong that those minions would disappear about as fast as they appeared. This and the legend of dragoon are two of my favorite none mainstream games of all time.
This game is good, fast paced action, huge number of enemies/monsters plus various summons that you can command them, good graphics it pushes PS2 hardware to the max
While the game is not perfect or even the greatest like DMC, this game hold a special place in my childhood, the combat but most importantly the Legions, I didn’t know why I like the legions but I truly cared for them as I always send them away if their HP was getting too low, sure some legions are weak and some that are overpowered but I loved all of them equally…sadly I can’t find the game anymore but never forget the game that I had memories for.
i still remember when i had a pc that could not run this game...then i forgot about it, thanks for the rememberance. good job. ( also, i lost it at 18:05 )
I've loved this game for 20 years. I know it's got a few flaws, but I had no idea it was rated so poorly. Just one of those games where the strengths outweigh the weaknesses, for me.
I remember a spot on a mountain where the enemies kept coming. I rigged my controller to spam guilt (swords) until they maxed out. What I didn't like about this game was you had to unlock the combat moves. And I had to be high to enjoy the game. I don't smoke anymore and too many other action games put this one to shame.
@@Natquerx I had a job when I was 18. Bought a ps2, big screen and went to disc replay to buy whatever looked good. Always had weed to get more "immersed". My favorite memory was Silent Hill 2. Sitting alone with the lights off being too scared to go through the apartments. I still remember going back out to re-check the town for anything else to do than go in there.
Dude I just pulled out the dusty old ps2 and this game was the only game that worked. I had some fun looking for all the thanatos parts without the internet
I was so frustrated with this game as a teen/kid. It's very nice to see the full game here. The MCs Name was the weirdest thing that's burned into my mind as a german. His Name is literally "Victory Truth"
I had mentioned this game recently in a convo forum of wukong. Some aspects of it reminded me immediately of chaos legion. Game needs a redo because the summoning aspect has a ridiculously high amount of potential
After I got Thanatos I spent every single drop of XP on it to the 4th form and wreck everything lol Also shouting THE WORLD when using Thanatos stop time-beam spam is a must!
I ended up getting into Thunderbolt Fantasy through its theme song getting used back in Sonic RPG episode 10's second trailer, so I get that feeling. My brain genuinely struggles with deciding to associate it with either Hyper Sonic or Urobuchi's Wuxia Archer expy (both of which are supremely badass).
To be honest, I liked it more than devil may cry 2. The music is absolutely amazing, and if you like games with summons its also good. But I agree with a lot of points 👍🏻
this was therapy man, it was a good game, and really... the soundtrack on the intermission menu, just 10/10. Really immerses you into that story. Now I get it. Quite an unoriginal plot... you were possesed and you thought your best friend killed your wife then boom carnage and massacres only to realise in the final mission that it was you who did it, and the main character was only hiding that from you so you wouldn t go berserk. BUT BRO, for 2003, this was a masterpiece, how can you comment on the gameplay :)) 2003 for fuck sake. If anything, worse thing capcom ever did was devil may cry 2 :)))) but I am so twisted I enjoyed even that one.
Chaos Legion isn't without its flaws. I just found it coming out especially after the original DMC and I believe within the same year as Kingdom Hearts it feels more archaic than both.
where can I play this game now only PCSX2? I remember this is one of my fav game when I was a kid on ps2... is there a way to play this game on PC version?
Is the game considered bad? I only remember urinalists shitting on the game for not being DMC, which it wasn't even supposed to be. Everyone I know liked the game well enough. Nothing too special, but a good game overall, with cool enemy design and nice music
It's not really bad. It's just extremely mediocre and underwhelming. There's a difference between a plain piece of white toast vs. a spoiled piece of meat. The toast is not going to make you sick, but it's not going to impress you either. Chaos legion is a plain piece of white toast for the time. No way in hell was this game worth the $50 MSRP. It's probably why it never got a sequel. At most this would have been a $30 budget title back then.
@@Natquerx just little things here and there 😅 Chaos legion is like a forgotten game lost to time that I bought in blockbuster and final fantasy 16 just reminded me of it in certain ways Definitely plays different and better 😂
I played this a few times as a teen and couldn't get past a certain level, might have been 7🤦🏿I loved the aesthetic but damn if I couldn't figure out the ability system for some reason. Like, either I'm really dumb, which is a possibility, or maybe this was my Dark Souls in a way. I never ran back to the relative comfort of Devil May Cry faster.
Even as a kid i knew better than to just change my legions the moment i get them you did the same lvl over or did an eirlyer one to test and level up you deffanintly made it harder on yourself thanks for the blast from the past man good video
I like games with strategic elements but for some reason never enjoy RTS so back then Chaos Legion really scratched an itch for me with its Legions system. Chaos Legion felt so much different compared to the other PS2 action games at the time, but honestly it could have been due to the way I played since I remember watching my uncle just brute force his way through the game afterward. I think a sequel or reboot of Chaos Legion with updated game designs and some mechanics borrowed from Astral Chain could be pretty interesting.
bro i swear i didnt remember the name of the game, i was searching something of sword of chaos and it was a sht mobile game lol. I played thid one on 2014 or so i think and never seen it before, i loved it
Good review this game while i find okish at best is very very rough but it was how i got exposed to action games back in 2003. I feel like it being based off a book held it back in ways cause the story in game feels devoid of really anything engaging or worth following its a nothing burger that'll give dmc2 a run for its money. The gameplay has some good ideas and to a degree its solidish but it feels like a first draft to something potentially interesting and cool I could see where astral chain and V got there inspiration the musics pretty stellar atleast overall I feel like this game would benefit from a remake but I can understand capcom just not wanting to bother with it can't say I blame em.
I agree with your take on it as well. I think the timing on the game was just not right combined with like you said it being tied to a book left for very little in the creativity department. Do you know of any other games like this?
I remember it from a demo because the concept of being a demon summoning knight was rather creative. Its just a shame that blasphemy and malice and thanatos legions are too op so theres no reason to use guilt, power, flawed, and arrogance.
This game either style, setting, saga etc, was so much similar to Devil May Cry. I don't understand this game why not as popular as DMC which have sequel installment...
I am replaying this game now and oh boy it is tedious, I am not using blasphemy so I can see why you did not complain about some bosses that I am having trouble with. And to be honest, almost every enemy encounter its tedious lol I did not remember it was this bad, a remake would be amazing to rework the 80% of the game. Good video, the only thing is that maybe it could be a little shorter, maybe it was not necesary to go that long to describe every level to get to your point.
Thank you for the feedback and I feel you with it being tedious without blasphemy. Regarding the length of it you are correct. I have been slowly testing how much detail I should keep and what is important or not. It's a bit challenging balance wise but I am working to make these videos informative but not excessive. So hopefully going forward I can shorten their length and get to the point.
I remember this game!! I don’t think I liked it very much. But also remember that I didn’t really give it much of a chance. Might have to plug up the ol PS2 again.
I had a ton of fun. And back then, lots of gaming reviewers were trash gamers. My friends and I would laugh at some of the complains these jaded adults were making about what were actually cool and uniqe games.
@@Natquerx Last time I remember playing was sometime around 2017, then lost my old pc. I can't deny that the game isn't flawed but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

honestly the only criticism i could make about this game is that you could not equip more legions i think it was 2 active at time if i remember correctly and with the right combinations, you'd be pretty busted already so i understand that more legions would be too broken and you would roll on the game but man just imagine with only one more legion, it would open so much more possibilites overall great at least 7 or 8/10 not the best surely but far from all the undeserved shit it recieved imo now onto watch the actual video ^^' i hope you'll be good to it!
That would make it interesting. I doubt it would happen, but I think a Chaos Legion Remake would be incredible with today's technology and knowledge about gaming. Thank you for stopping by!
Chaos legion to me has always been the definition of mediocrity. I'm genuinely surprised how there are people who remember it fondly. No, it wasn't terrible. It just wasn't any good either. Even more mediocre games of the time like Eve of Extinction were way more enjoyable to me. I wasn't a fan of the combat or story in chaos legion. Really the only thing that stood out to me as good was the atmosphere/art direction.
I enjoyed it, I mean its a button smashing game with fancy visuals, I also loved the summoning system. However the story, plots and voice are just cringy, skip those cut scenes it was fine.
The only reason I ever heard of this game was due to soundtrack and bangers such as Welcome to the Darkness. And nothing much else. I don't understand the worldbuilding after watching this, characters seem flat and uninteresting and I don't really care about the story. Why is this world so void of live in the first place? Are we a Megami Tensei-styled Devil Summoner or what? It's honestly garbage. And the depressing, liveless world...doesn't just cut it. It's simply makes me sad and that's all. There are games who even from that era showed how to make a liveless world look good - Shadow of Colossus or God of War. Well at least I've got that one of my list to play, straight into category of "skip the hell out of it".
So, reviewer, i think you dont have to review Chaos Legion at the moment, it's like you forced yourself to play final fantasy 1,2 and then try to review😂
It's hard to say what Capcom is doing is more than a greatest hits run until they run out and actually have to make original games again. The scifi one disappeared with nothing said and the live service I can't see lasting long. Capcom's biggest issue is never trying after they fail. They will kill any IP if it doesn't make enough money or the creator making it has enough sway. Chaos Legion could have worked a lot of things out with a little more budget in a sequel. However, it's not their IP and I can't see them being that dedicated.

Sitting alone with the lights off being too scared to go through the apartments. I still remember going back out to re-check the town for anything else to do than go in there.
Dude I just pulled out the dusty old ps2 and this game was the only game that worked. I had some fun looking for all the thanatos parts without the internet
Oh man looking for some of those pieces was an absolute blast.
love this game but also enjoyed your review haha
I was so frustrated with this game as a teen/kid. It's very nice to see the full game here. The MCs Name was the weirdest thing that's burned into my mind as a german. His Name is literally "Victory Truth"
I had mentioned this game recently in a convo forum of wukong. Some aspects of it reminded me immediately of chaos legion. Game needs a redo because the summoning aspect has a ridiculously high amount of potential
After I got Thanatos I spent every single drop of XP on it to the 4th form and wreck everything lol
Also shouting THE WORLD when using Thanatos stop time-beam spam is a must!
;) glad you got the reference
V's gameplay in DMC5 really reminds me of Sieg Wahrheit from Chaos Legion
Chaos Legion will forever be the "Sonic RPG Ost" game in my heart
I ended up getting into Thunderbolt Fantasy through its theme song getting used back in Sonic RPG episode 10's second trailer, so I get that feeling. My brain genuinely struggles with deciding to associate it with either Hyper Sonic or Urobuchi's Wuxia Archer expy (both of which are supremely badass).
I will say this game is better than DMC2, but that is not much of a milestone.
A remake of this game could be very tasty.
Weird how I was introduced to this because of sonic rpg
I wish we got a reboot of this on ps5 and zone of the enders man!
A reboot would be interesting. With Astral Chain already existing though I am curious how they would do it.
you can use the hatred legion to counter Gil Balor, really fun animation with that one tbh
where can I play this game now only PCSX2? I remember this is one of my fav game when I was a kid on ps2... is there a way to play this game on PC version?
I know the PC version exists but I am not sure how to get it.
its abandonware, you can download it for free.
@@GloomGenetics thanks
If you have a PS2 you can find it secondhand pretty easily, I got it for €6 just a couple months ago lol
I'm actually interested in this
I love this game. It deserves a remaster.
Is the game considered bad? I only remember urinalists shitting on the game for not being DMC, which it wasn't even supposed to be. Everyone I know liked the game well enough. Nothing too special, but a good game overall, with cool enemy design and nice music
this game released the same year as devil may cry 2, and id still rather play chaos legion than that fucking dumpster fire.
Loved this game
That was a great game
While the story sucks, it was really the monster and legion designs that drew me in. I personally haven't seen another game like it.
capcom should remake or make a part 2 of this game, it would be viral. this game is never talked about at all 😭
I have a ps5 with no exclusives. Remasters and remakes hurt the industry
I find it funny how final fantasy 16 reminds me of this game
It does? I have not played it yet, but I'm invested in your comment now.
@@Natquerx just little things here and there 😅
Chaos legion is like a forgotten game lost to time that I bought in blockbuster and final fantasy 16 just reminded me of it in certain ways
Definitely plays different and better 😂
I played this a few times as a teen and couldn't get past a certain level, might have been 7🤦🏿I loved the aesthetic but damn if I couldn't figure out the ability system for some reason. Like, either I'm really dumb, which is a possibility, or maybe this was my Dark Souls in a way. I never ran back to the relative comfort of Devil May Cry faster.
Even as a kid i knew better than to just change my legions the moment i get them you did the same lvl over or did an eirlyer one to test and level up you deffanintly made it harder on yourself thanks for the blast from the past man good video
Thank you for stopping by!
How did your Uncle brute force it without getting ticked off?
I would give it a 10/10 if it stopped crashing on me 😂
Chaos legion was fkn sick
You should do Galerians Rion next
Is it just Galerians for the PS1? I looked up Galerians Rion but it says that it is a three part OVA.
@@Natquerx Ah, looks like I got the two mixed up. But yes the game, I think you'll have fun doing a similar retrospective with it :)
This game is HARD AS F and kinda annoying fighting them flying things that come at you
bro i swear i didnt remember the name of the game, i was searching something of sword of chaos and it was a sht mobile game lol.
@@Natquerx only games I know similar to chaos legion are Astral chain and dmc5's V there could be more but thats all I could think of
I remember it from a demo because the concept of being a demon summoning knight was rather creative.
Its just a shame that blasphemy and malice and thanatos legions are too op so theres no reason to use guilt, power, flawed, and arrogance.
I got stuck on chapter 8 with no healing items left
GLORY TO OUR LORD TANK FISH!!!!!!!!
Oh shit it's the Seelkadoom game
Why not explore all the legions "scoff"
I remember this game!! I don’t think I liked it very much. But also remember that I didn’t really give it much of a chance. Might have to plug up the ol PS2 again.
Go right ahead and load her on up!
Sieg Wahrheit Chaos Legion joins in Act 1 haos Contestir Volume 1. Bionicle story saga.
this game is a license game after all... cant expect much.
Negatives - Story, slow to progress
Positives - Designs, aesthetic, legions, music
Worth playing? Certainly.
I had a ton of fun. And back then, lots of gaming reviewers were trash gamers. My friends and I would laugh at some of the complains these jaded adults were making about what were actually cool and uniqe games.
I still remember playing this game with hatred
maxed out because they were my favorite legion. Counter stance ftw.
Fair enough! Have you played it recently?
@@Natquerx
Last time I remember playing was sometime around 2017, then lost my old pc.
I can't deny that the game isn't flawed but it will always hold a special place in my heart.
honestly the only criticism i could make about this game
is that you could not equip more legions
i think it was 2 active at time if i remember correctly and with the right combinations, you'd be pretty busted already so i understand that more legions would be too broken and you would roll on the game but man just imagine with only one more legion, it would open so much more possibilites
overall great at least 7 or 8/10 not the best surely but far from all the undeserved shit it recieved imo
now onto watch the actual video ^^' i hope you'll be good to it!
That would make it interesting. I doubt it would happen, but I think a Chaos Legion Remake would be incredible with today's technology and knowledge about gaming. Thank you for stopping by!
Astral chain is amazing
i dont know why it count as bad game. Is it too easy to challenge?? because i use archer minion and kill the boss
It was ok. Had a ton of potential. I wanted to love it but it was very bland. They could make it today and it could be insane.
The game was awesome people back then just wanted another devils may cry and trashed everything that’s not that
Game was awful 10/10 i loved it.
I enjoyed it, I mean its a button smashing game with fancy visuals, I also loved the summoning system. However the story, plots and voice are just cringy, skip those cut scenes it was fine.
Nope, i love it
The only reason I ever heard of this game was due to soundtrack and bangers such as Welcome to the Darkness.
Well at least I've got that one of my list to play, straight into category of "skip the hell out of it".
stop this my childhood
So, reviewer, i think you dont have to review Chaos Legion at the moment, it's like you forced yourself to play final fantasy 1,2 and then try to review😂
Hey man. Thanks for stopping by. This is a game I wanted to review as I never got the chance to beat it in the past. So it was worth the effort.
A notable quality this game has
The soundtrack SLAPS!
Also, Astral Chain has notable similarities to this.
