A channel that deep dives into the combat systems of one of my favorite genres is something I’d never thought I’d see but man this is great. You should do Godhand next bro
It's very intensive at times but its Always fun! Man its must be your lucky day bc its next up. Legendary game so might take extra time but its gonna be worth it
Despite its issues this is one of my favorite games. Such a fun time, especially when in coop or fighting friends. I'd love to see an overhaul mod to improve the game, such as adding i-frames.
Yeea my minor gripes aside this game is dem aweseme! Just has that attitude yknow? N dem cant get over those beefy hits everyone lands haha No matter if youre landing the punch or if youre the one sent flying - its always a good time
One mechanic you should've mention that was very important for this game, is that some grapple reversals can also be countered. Basically, the character gets a little flash when they reverse a grapple, but if you time it right, if you press square as the same time as the white flash appears during the reversal, you can counter it. Some reversals can even be done indefinitely until someone just misses the timing, but at the point, you might as well be considered a bot.
The music, the look, over the top moves. Hard to narrow it down but I have a hunch multiplayer is the best part of this game. So many great aspects n it only gets better when you get to share the hype
Yeah, the enemies can be a bit on the unfair side, but when things line up, the fights can get really epic with the tag team moves, reversals, running up the walls and kicking of a bunch of enemies, knocking a weapon out of an enemies hands, grabbing it out of air then beating them with it, etc. I just love this era in gaming as so many devs were trying different approaches in the same genre.
Oh definitely definitely its just feels so amaazing when it lines up! Even w my lil hiccups it was a dem good time. How can you NOT get hyped by getting double suplexed? It may or may not have been me on the other end of it haha but it was still godlike
Bro Urban Reign is one of my favorite games of all time! It sucks to high heaven this didn't become a series of games that kept getting bigger and better with more multiplayer. So freaking fun
One day a friend is met at this apartment complex who started out as a neighbor. Until he picked this game up for me. Along with a few other PS 2 games. I wanted this game but it was hard to find and expensive. I still own it and play it annually. Awesome game Bub Bub.
@@o_uwu_ofor sure! I really was taken by how much it feels like the enemy ai is from a fighting game, for better or worse. getting punished with a long ass combo is not something I'm used to in a brawler
Urban Reign was a good surprise for me when I went for it initially along w/ Death by Degrees around the same time so I can't say I've grew up w/ it or anything or have any sort of nostalgic connections w/ em. While DbD is more ambitious and experimental, UR tries to stay close to the conventions of the beat em up genre outside of the enemy design which to me felt a lot closer to something like Team Ninja's approach than anything else where it's more on the player to make or force openings and capitalize on em even if they gotta use their surroundings for it instead along w/ quite aggressive enemies overall. Enemies in this game don't have the conventional Visual cues and there is no consistent strategy that works against them all the time everytime even the loops can be broken by them to avoid infinites from the player. All of that leads to constant back and forth b/w a player and the opponent which keeps the game fresh on it's story mode for me even if the game decides to reuse same backdrops again and again (all the locations are beautifully well rendered and contained while oozing that urban street gritty theme). I like that the enemies are just as capable as the player character and this is probably as close as even playing field as it can get for a single player beat em up experience but that does mean that the game is quite very demanding esp. when it constantly requires moment to moment improvisation from the player as things can and will go wrong so it's up to the player to recover from em on the spot which can be an exercise in frustration but also quite satisfying when ya work it all out as if ya outplayed em instead of abusing/exploiting very clear visual and audio cues like it is for almost every other game. Yes the enemy AI is absolutely input reading very much like Dante boss fight in DMC4 but so does Itsuno's Vergil in 3 and V unless you're telling me that he is able to somehow predict, clash, I-frame dash teleport, deflect & parry incoming attacks w/ unreasonable inhuman speed regardless if you're using EnI's hitscan bullets or something like Stinger (hell you can even make that moron spam his parry animation if you're close enough to him and space yourself out just right so that the attacks don't connect but he'd go for it anyway on input press, that's the level of egregious input reading he have). In all of those cases going for a more classic FG fundamental approach of 'Whiff into Punish' works. My biggest criticism in regards to enemies or the game overall is that the difficulty progression is very messed up and there's moments when the game just throws a huge difficulty spike towards the player for really no good reason. It is weird that the most difficult part of the campaign is not it's penultimate final stage which even might be it's easiest stage but rather 2 stages prior to it w/ a tag team of two mean and tough bosses at the same time for instance. Outside of these spikes and maybe a few of gimmick stages like 'Limited timer' and 'Regional damage' ones, the progression felt overall more or less balanced w/ constantly rising in terms of difficulty while giving the player more and more tools at least in the first third of the game. The Tag system is quite nice though on one hand I'd have preferred where your tagged partner does not remain on the screen along w/ ya so that you as a player wouldn't need to worry about them as well but on the other hand it's good that they're out there aggroing other enemies so that they all just don't collectively go for the player at once while allowing for tag team combos and grab setups which also have I frames on em. Also I will say the deflect/counter mechanic is still good as it reduces the juice enemies have on em which reduces their options while boosting your own so it is still worth while going for em just not always all the time is all as the key defensive move (the roll allows players to not put themselves into terrible position in the first place). Urban Reign enemies pretty much discourage thoughtless decision making like that. Overall I like this game too and yeah there's a lot of stuff to do in there esp. w/ that insanely high character list to choose from w/ many unlockables as well. The game is demanding, challenging and even frustratingly BS at times as well even on it's Normal mode lol while being highly fun and replayable. I do wish the characters stood out more in terms of personality esp. the main lead. Brad is the most bland and dry ass character I've ever seen (they wasted Steve Blum on that lol). They should've just let Shun Ying be the main lead and the face of the game instead. Good Overview man👍
Haven't played this even though I've heard of it before, although I wasn't really aware of how complex it's fighting system was lol That said, it does seem like the fighting system in general was built more towards 1v1--ing as opposed to multi-enemy combat. I'll probably try this at some point just to see what it's like lol
Please check it out bc its awesome! Has great controls n everything just links so naturally. Honestly theres nothing else quite like it so give it a shot anyway you can bc itll be a fun time
Next up is GODHAND n im so pumped! Til this day its unmatched. buuuut dont worry - I still remember clash! It nvr left my radar thats for sure n is for sure something we wont miss
Looks like a awesome game a little ahead of it’s time I like how the ai isn’t just cannon fodder is it overturned yes can the enemies have more variation definitely but I think they definitely got something here
Ahead of its time for SURE. I really like how aggressive they are too but weeew man haha! Wish they gave us a liiil warning at times. But we're taking a look at godhand next n its gonna be a good comparison as to what I mean. Besides my lil gripes this needs to be played without a doubt. One of a kind game from a bygone area
you are not supposed to fight enemies when you are surrounded, you are supposed to push them back and fight them one by one meanwhile managing crowd control with the rest of the enemies . Thats why you get wombo comboed in single player cause it's nearly imposible fighting them all at the same time , that and the fact to switch your attacks so enemies don't counter you that easily.Enemies are way less agressive once they are separated making fights easier and for bosses you gotta memorize what traits or fighting style they use often like Golem one of the grapplers which enters a super armor mode often so you gotta learn to counter his grabs , use your own grabs or time him out from that state and grab his weapon in order to make the fight easy.
Kinda disagree on the unfair enemies. Not to brag but thats a skill issue situation, if i pick fully upgraded Brad or any boss character I'm breesing through hardest difficulty, NO bot stands a chance so i nerf myself using low tier characters against max diff bots to make it interesting 🤷♂️
oh thank you christ. i have just about the same thought on this game the defensive options are really poor, grabs are a literal RPS since there's like a 3 way grab window for high mid and low grabs on top of the AI the AI makes NG input reading blush like jesus christ. Golem and Napalm 99 are fucking nightmares man. I think there's a way to loop enemies via the over the shoulder back grab into a wall but idk i could never set it up properly, it kinda controls like ass, so many context sensitive moves. this game is the opposite of NG2. everything is broken in NG2 but Ryu is the most broken thing. things are broken in Urban Reign but Brad is the least broken thing.
Mission 98 was my nightmare as a teen for a while. I usually don't enjoy soulslikes. When I say that, soulslike stupid elitists say I don't like hard games. Then I say I finished Urban Reign on very hard 3 times, they think only souls games are hard, puff. This game can be so brutal it makes Dark souls look like Barbie Treasures in time.
I wanted to make the NG2 comparison too. Bc both games have hyper aggressive enemies but at least NG2 gave players Consistent moves/options to relieve the pressure. Also enemies in 2 had their one or 2 atks(clear roles) n windows to react within reason(start up/endlag). UR enemies lack that for sure. The high mid low is another issue too. I think it wouldve worked if enemies were developed with it in mind. Like have some enemies only atk mid or low for example so its not some guessing game against a bot - which is impossible. Think the idea can work but its obvious the enemies they dropped in singleplayer are just usual fighting game cpus. Cool ideas but like I said enemy design is its Only downfall
I wouldnt say hate. Faaaar from it bc this game is awesome! Tho I do think its a fighting game w a tacked on singleplayer mode is all. That mode is a lil extra side thing which is neat but the main bread n butter is that hype multiplayer

This game was one of the GOAT's of my childhood. Would buy it remastered in a heartbeat.

I loved this game back in the ps2 days. I used to have 3 friends to play with. Just great to play with friends and have some fun
Also the system from this game was used at a MMO called Zone 4. The dodge, special attacks, grabs.
The music, the look, over the top moves. Hard to narrow it down but I have a hunch multiplayer is the best part of this game. So many great aspects n it only gets better when you get to share the hype
This is my favorite fighting game of all time
This game. This channel. I'm already subscribed.
Aaay thank you! Well heres to alot more n hopefully I can deliver best I can haha

The enemies are not unfair, they are there to beat you for real😂 Unlike other holding hands games
What an underrated channel with great content backlog
This is still one of my favorite games of all time!!!
I have my fingers crossed we get some remaster or sooomething. This needs to be playable for many many generations

They do NOT hide reading inputs but that wild factor had its own appeal
I mean to be fair every character there is playable in a fighting game sense.
Precisely. Thats why I have a hunch they were repurposed as last minute enemies rather than creating dedicated beatm em up ai w consistent patterns
@@o_uwu_o I've always thought this was closer to Def Jam games than the average beat em up
