  • First time changing transmission oil on my 2009 Volvo XC70 T6, it has 60,000km or 37,000miles.
You need VIDA and DICE to complete this job properly. You can get it on Ebay for around 100USD.
Total capacity of oil in the transmission is 7 liters.
This will be same on diesel and petrol Volvo using the TF-80SC Transmission.
Please check with your dealer for correct oil type!!!
From 2000MY to 2009MY Transmission oil part number is 1161640
From 2010MY to current: Transmission oil part number is 31256775
    Hex 17mm washer is 30713220
    Torx - 40 Black O-ring is 1233068
    Level tube - 31325038
Plug small for level tube - 30713219
The car is level! There is a slope in the garage floor.

Your videos are excellent. Your understanding of the importance for clarity when creating a video is VERY much appreciated. 99% of videos made by people trying to be informative (not just car repair) are very frustrating to learn from. Most times I at least learn what NOT to do, then back track and figure it out. My Daughter was given a '03 S60 Base, 172k miles - our first Volvo experience. This car has been very easy to fix.

Finished this today thanks to your video, fantastic and thorough as always. I made a few adjustments: I did extensive research and Volvo has an Aisin transmission using same JW3309 fluid as Toyota T-IV, which is what I bought. It is the same stuff and much cheaper, $80 for 12 quarts. I also only did 2 drain and fills, saving the last 4 quarts for about 1000 miles down the road when the fluid would be really mixed and next oil change. Reason - I've done this on Acura before, their 3x3 procedure asks you drive through all forward gears between drains to ensure mix and my mileage is 85K miles, only doing a 2X gives adaptation some time to settle back in and not shock the system

    • @pbierre

Does the Aisin TF-80SC do "adaptation"?

    • @ar12.
      @ar12. ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@pbierre yeah it’s an adaptive gearbox that adapts to how you drive it basically which is good for fuel but terrible for performance in some instances.

2009 XC60 here. This was a brilliant video worked great for me. I was worried doing it as my car was 2nd owner at 180,000km with no evidence of ever having the fluid changed. It was still slightly red so it may have been at some stage.
Tip: when resetting the counter be sure to read the instruction page (I didn’t). You have to click on the symbol of the module to start the procedure NOT click on Continue like I keep doing.
Also if you don’t have a hex 17mm socket (get one!) or you can improvise with a deep 17mm hex nut ( I did)
Also to get to ignition setting 2 on my car, stop the engine then press the start button for 2 seconds without pushing the brake pedal
Thanks VolvoSweden for the great videos

Great Video Guys! I already did it like three years ago on my S80 V8 2007, now I just bought a V70 III D3 2011 and it has the same gearbox and it has 161,000 kms and I assume with the original oil from the factory...... Volvo does not have a service plan to change the oil, they say they only change it if there is a problem......!!!!!!! ????? But then it is often already too late !
Really nice video and quality - world class ! I also used your video yesterday for the rear brakes and the handbrake motor, thx for that one as well ! So appreciated by me a Swede living in Germany and with our 3 Volvo cars! You are simply the best!

    • @rosen9425

Volvo do have service plans but for specific vehicles only. 60 000 km for fleet lease/service vehicles (taxi, police etc) and the rest of us "if maybe necessary but Volvo couldn't care less, please buy a new car instead" type of deal.
So changing trans oil is never a bad idea. If yours should fail after a fluid change at 161k it's just a sign that your transmission was damaged beyond repair anyway. It's a Toyota transmission after all, it should hold.

  • @chien-shengtsai8626

Hi Yuri, I finally changed my transmission oil at 102,000 miles. As mentioned before the transmission was clunking when changing gears between R and D in parking maneuvers.
I followed your instructions but ran into an issue.
When you took off the air box, it was so easy for you, but for the life of me, I could not get the front to come apart, and I was not sure how to get the MAF senser released, as well as the clip that holds it. I watched your video multiple times. Thought I was screwed, cannot change the oil.
BUT WAIT! I was able to see the transmission inlet oil plug and insert a T-55 on extensions. And I was able to squeeze my hand in and remove the plug. And I have a OTC Steel flexible spout and funnel which can fit right into the hole.
Thus I was able to change the oil without removing the air box. Phew!
The transmission oil was black, hardly reddish like yours. After doing three drain and fills, it is barely red. I would probably have to do two more passes to get to your color.
I was able to read the oil temperature with a Foxwell NT510E scanner, but I was not able to reset the counter.
Thank you for your video, could not have done it without your instruction. Regards

Warning: on ALL other 5 speed transmissions, never remove the large bolt at the top of the transmission - on the 5 speed Aisin transmission that is a mechanical bolt for the 3rd gear. Instead, always refill by the dipstick tube. Several people removed the upper large bolt, and lost the 3rd gear - you can still recover it if this happened to you th-cam.com/video/VFyQptqISsc/w-d-xo.html

I've watched many german videos about changing transmission oil lately and wondered why they always opened the transmission to change the filter and install a new seal. Some mechanics cleaned the inside of the transmission with break cleaner. One even claimed that changing the filter was more important than changing the oil.
I decided to ignore some of their advice, ordered 20 litres of atf for my two mercedes and a dip stick. And now while I am waiting for the stuff to arrive youtube presents me a video from canada where somebody already did it as wrongly and unprofessionally as I'm intending to do it :-)

Great video - the details make all the difference. I completed the service on my 2014 XC70 with a couple of changes. I found a funnel with a long hose that I made stiffer with a coat hanger, and used that to put fluid in the top of the transmission so I didn't have to remove the air filter box - I just used a 3/8" drive extension to access the torx fitting (on mu car a bit hidden by a fitting above it), and an extensible magnet to lift out and replace the torx fitting with each addition of fluid. Worked fine with a little bit of fiddling, with a lot less hassle than removing the air box each time.
Then, the whole VIDA DICE issue was so difficult to decipher (software only available with license from Volvo, outdated operating systems, lots of on line confusion, etc., etc.) that I took my mechanical engineer brother's suggestion and just heated the final 4 quarts of transmission fluid to about 65 degrees C, assuming it would cool a bit when put in the transmission. Buttoned it up and seems to work fine. Didn't bother with resetting any codes.

    • @bioret

To anyone doing this. I do not recommend bypassing the reading of the temperature sensor. You will not get the correct reading using methods such as this or using a laser thermometer pointed at the bolt (as I have seen in other car’s procedures). And you will not get the correct level. Probably good enough. But if you’re going through the trouble of servicing a “sealed” transmission I recommend you do it right and get the correct level.
Just get the DICE knockoffs scan tools for about $100 online and the software from volvodiag virtual machines (google it)

I finally got the kahuna's to attempt this and thanks to your video I had the confidence all the way through. However, I did only one drain/fill.
Mine drained exactly 3 liters. The old fluid was more browner than I wanted to see and smelled like old varnish.
It's a 2010 - S80T6 with 118K miles, previously owned by an older gentleman so I don't think it was abused so much.
After the single, 3 liter drain and fill, the fluid turned much more pink after idling, and running through the gears a few times. I was pleased to see that.
I documented with photos so I can compare color after next change in about 3 months. If the fluid is brown again I will consider doing the 3x flush like in the video. Or I may consider spending the $300 to have it fully flushed at the Volvo dealer and have the computer reset. Any feedback on this would be appreciated.
Fluid was $58 here www.fcpeuro.com/products/automatic-transmission-fluid-4-liter-1161640. The website tells me to use the 1161640 for my 2010, not the 31256775 fluid. Anyway, this place is awesome for ordering parts I need and they have a lifetime guarantee! Even on filters!!!! You all really need to check them out!
Thank you again Sir for another wonderful video. I am just a computer programmer but a weekend mechanic on my own cars. Volvo's kindof scare me and I want to take care of my baby. Great video! Just a few notes: There are 2 versions of the TF80SC and both use different transmission oil. (one is type 3309, other 3324) Make sure you use the correct ones as you can not mix these. There is a vin break for each vehicle model so you can check online.
Also, if you find the Volvo fluid hard or expensive to come by, toyota sells the exact same fluid at a cheaper cost. (After all, technically they made that transmission)

      JWS3324=Toyota WS=31256774

    • @LaddieT
      @LaddieT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@shanewonder5306 Yeah I had that. It resets the computer for the gearbox so it knows it has fresh fluid. It changes how it shifts based on how you drive, but also how old the oil is. But most importantly, you can see the temperature of the oil from the sensor. You need to know this as it needs to be between a certain range to properley check the oil. Once it's at that temperature, you take out the filler plug and any excess will come out and the level will be correct. If none comes out you know you need to add more.
You can get Chinese clones of Vida Dice online. They're not too expensive, but much more then other dealer diagnostic systems I've had. I've had Chinese copies of VCDS/Vag-Com for my VWs, and now TechStream for my Lexus (that's for Toyota's too). They're cheap because it's just a basic cable and the software. But Vida Dice has a box of tricks in the middle (you can see that in the video) that bump the price up. So, you'll have to decide if it's worth it for you. If you're going to use it to maintain your car then great, but if it's just for one job get a shop to do it.
It came in handy for me as I did my own maintainence and as it was the proper Volvo software, you could access every system on the car and find out exactly what was wrong. It's helped me diagnose problems, and perform calibrations like the one for the gearbox, and from when I had to install a new clock spring.

You could have flushed it way easier. Do the normal procedure for a oil change. Then remove the return line from the oil cooler and put a hose on so the oil can be "drained" without a mess. Have a second person start the engine while you still fill the transmission. Old oil from the torque converter and oil cooler will drain untill fresh and clean oil will appear. Only start the engine for short time as 9 liters per Minute are coming out from the return line while idling! At best do that with another person and shift through gears while flushing

    • @pbierre

This is well documented as the "Gibbons" method in many places. It requires having a fluid connector (which you can get at the junkyard), the one that plugs into the return line of the tranny oil cooler. You use the oil pump integral to the tranny to
push out the old fluid thru this connector attached to a waste oil hose / collection pan. The Gibbons method does a more thorough job of cleaning out the old oil, and
might be worth it if the tranny oil has become very burned.

Many thanks for this video and detailed explanation. I will be working through this procedure myself after a procedure by a local garage has created a problem with my gearbox when it is hot - gearbox slips under load and engine revs are high. I suspect that the garage have not set the oil level correctly after a machine flush using 14 litres of AISIN Premium ATF6 (which is a listed equivalent for JWS-3309). I really have no confidence that they will do a better job if I return the car to them!
Unfortunately, I have a 2006 XC70 D5 with a TF-80SC gearbox. My car has the ECU mounted on top of the air filter housing (not a great bit of design-for-service by Volvo!) and this makes this procedure difficult to follow because the ECU has to be connected for the engine and gearbox runs in between oil fills. In preparation for the job, which I'll do next week with Volvo JWS-3309 oil when I have the new drain gaskets, I've just done a trial run to make sure that I can remove the connected ECU from the air filter housing and then get the filter housing out of the way to get access to the transmission oil filler. That was fiddly but I managed it and have confirmed that the oil filler plug can be removed. So, now all ready for the change next week and I have my fingers crossed that no permanent damage has been done!

I've watched several videos on changing the ATF.......some say you must flush, like this guy....others insist that does more harm than good!
A single drain & refill seems enough for me.
And yes I appreciate a single drain does not remove the oil in the Torque Converter....but that amount of oil is eye watering expensive! 12 litres!
(I'm guessing most dealerships would not actually go the full flush as this.)
Hopefully an expert in AutoTrans will enlighten us all.

I have a question: At 3:05 when you take out the inner Torx screw the first time, fluid starts coming out. Why is that if the level should be such that nothing comes out until you take the big 17mm bolt? In other words, when you adjust the level at the end, no fluid should come out with the inner screw off which is the whole idea behind setting the level.

    • @volvosweden
