I believe Apollo's voice actor is prolific cartoon actor Jeff Bennett, he's probably best known as Johnny Bravo, but he's done a TON of work. And I can say anecdotally that his villain voices have been mistaken for Tim Curry in the past.

Some friends and I took a stab at identifying the whole cast. We didn't get absolutely everyone and since we're amateurs do not take this as gospel, but it's what makes most sense to us. We're pretty sure they did this on the cheap and reused the same actors a lot. Side note: While the copyright says 1993 I kinda get the feeling this was produced a little earlier than that. I dunno, something about this just seems REALLY 80s.
Also I used the Japanese names mostly cuz that's how I know them.
Seiya: We think this is actually Jeff Bennett. He voiced Johnny Cage in "Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins" with pretty much this exact voice and we know he's Apollo.
Shiryu: Jerry Houser, his role as Sandstorm from Transformers G1 is identical. He does resemble Frank so easy mistake. He's also the criminal stopped by Ikki.
Hyoga: Probably an actor named Danny Mann. He's a little hard to pin down with the accent, but we're pretty sure he's Ikki's master and Hyoga is about the only role left for him besides that.
Shun: Rob Paulsen, so right that it was a ninja turtle, but not Cam.
      Ikki: Jim Cummings
Saori: While we aren't 100% on this, we think Susan Blu is a good candidate. She also voice directed for a lot of shows, so from a business perspective it would make sense to hire her to direct and voice all the women.
      Apollo/The Pope: Jeff Bennett
      Taurus Aldebaran: Jim Cummings
Eagle Marin: The same VA as Saori.
      Tatsumi: Jim Cummings
      Libra Dohko: Probably Rob again.
      Ikki's Master: Danny Mann

It really is his infamous Curry sound-alike voice from Food Fight. That said though, Bennett is a legend.
EDIT: There was a part during the Genesis chapter where he sounds a lot like Bennett's performances as Dexter's Dad from Dexter Lab and Kowalski from Penguins of Madagascar, so I'm certain it is him.

@@abbynormal2419 Agree with all but I don't think Nova is Susan Blu; she has a very particular sort of tone that I'm not hearing in any lines in this piece. My guess is Renae Jacobs, the April O'Neal of TMNT 87.

Incredible, the Americanized Saint Seiya's pilot has finally seen the light of day thanks to you, Ray. The pilot is pretty good, and the cheesy "SatAM" treatment worked complements the Saint Seiya mythos quite well. Coming from someone with virtually no knowledge of the Saint Seiya franchise (only seeing it from afar online over the years), i really enjoyed that pilot episode more than i thought i would. I probably would have totally enjoyed the hypothetical series if it had actually been made in the 90s. The dialogue interactions and performances are what really sell it for me i think. Thank you so much for all the work you've been doing. Really enjoying seeing these "what-if" series' history.

Oh MY. This story is just getting wilder and wilder! Btw for reference Jeffrey Scott (who is credited in the pilot too) was actually responsible for the adaptation to television of the original Muppet Babies cartoon and he wrote the first two seasons and a bit into the third single-handedly! There’s also a Three Stooges connection that you might know about if you read his book “How to Write for Animation”. He even gets into the weeds on topics that might be interesting to you! I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes for sure! Very interesting stuff, to be sure!

  • @Shinmsl
    @Shinmsl ปีที่แล้ว +11

This is so mind blowing! Just think we almost got a version of Saint seiya developed by the same studio that did ninja turtles. Of course there's quite a shock to see such a different version of the characters that are ingrained in my mind since childhood but the show had quality animation and voice acting. However it's so baffling to see the concepts translated to fit American culture. Like in the original version the characters powers are deeply rooted in spirituality and martial arts, and here they basically manifest like mutant powers in X-Men. Also how sanitized was everything: not only violence but any controversial themes, like all of the guardians masters were nice people (unlike the Japanese version, were the Pheonix's master is a complete psycho that even murdered his own daughter). Also how much they brought up Saori(,Nova) PAID for their training, or how much of the city which seems to be futuristic we get to see. Those two elements are completely new and entirely absent from the original manga and feels very much the work of American writers😅 . But all in all I can see a lot of similarities between tmnt, and very much how they made those gritty and violent original comics into a family friendly Saturday morning cartoon. I am not gonna lie if I had caught this on tv at that age I totally would have watched, and probably wanted the toys too. However, the original Saint Seiya made such an impact on me that it completely changed my perception of cartoons and comics could be, the dramatic storytelling shaped my instincts for being a comics artist and a writer myself, the art style drove to try actively trying mimick it and that's probably my very first step into becoming a real artist, not just a kid drawing whatever he liked a that time. All in all, what I am trying to get at here: the American version was a fine attempt and it probably could have been successful, but hardly the level of success the original got and certainly not the timeless classic it became in Japan,China,South America and Europe.

Fantastic episode. And yeah, I probably would have watched this adaptation as well. That was surprisingly well-made for the era. I am completely in awe of your patience and determination in finding these lost media treasures as well as unearthing things we never expected. Keep up the great work, and I'll continue to tune in to everything that you do.

What a banger of a documentary, I felt like I was going crazy when the opening for Guardians of the Cosmos went viral, even thought it had to be a fake because it was inconceivable that something like this would stay hidden. Amazing work in not only doing insane legwork but also putting all this info together, can't wait for the next part.

Just want to say, thanks for doing these series. As someone who worked in Production, I see all the sides of a show and just how much love, sweat, and tears that go into one. I'm always listening to the stories of my coworkers, of the various shows and pilots they've worked on, many never getting to see the light of day. I'm still new to this compared to say, those who've been in the industry for 20+ years, still it warms my heart. Thank you, thank you!!

    You know what?
This "Guardians of the Cosmos" thing was way better than I actually expected.
Given they actually made a reinterpretation of an IP that was unfinished back in the day (the original Saint Seiya manga had barely finished the Hades part, the anime didn't even made it there back in early 90's) they actually gave a quite interesting spin to Knights of the Zodiac.
Well done, both the producers of this pilot episode and you. Really nice doc!

Thank you so much for uncovering this show's pilot and put it online. I like it, in some ways it's even better than its material source, although of course it's worse in other ways and being a pilot episode it had a lot of room for improvement. I think it had potential but may have suffered from "too little too late" syndrome. As you know there were a lot of American cartoon shows in the '80s and '90s with a similar premise.

the plot of the pilot is a bit similar to one of the movies, except the villain is Abel. There is a movie with Apollo as a villain, but it ended on a cliffhanger that was never followed up due to it not performing well(it was supposed to be a trilogy of movies telling an arc,but it only got one.). The Next Dimension manga replaces this unfinished trilogy in the canon, being the direct sequel to the Hades arc and it's still ongoing
