I was poking at the irony of fans criticising Super's writers for just "reusing" or "recycling old concepts" when in reality Toei's writers were doing the same back then. That's "Best Fan-art Goku" put into the animation lol. They used to do fun cool things like that back in the 90's.
Broly was not a ghost warrior in this film because he simply wasn't dead, as later revealed in Broly second coming. I think King Cold would have made sense as a Ghost Warrior.
Koyama penned the script for this ova before he decided on bringing him back the next year in 94. so in the context when this came out, it could've been possible. the more likely reason he didn't is that these Ova's were intended as "visual guides" for the actual video game, so making drastic changes to the original plot would ofc cause a lot of confusion for the intended audience
When I clicked on this video, I didn't expect to see a detailed break down of all the different animators and their styles. I admire your dedication. :)
Lol great timing, I just watched this the other day. It's not the greatest bit of Dragon Ball media but it does have its moments, I too enjoyed the bit with the red henchman and Piccolo looking absolutely dumbfounded. (Also Popo Poco Volcano is a mistranslation/typo, it should be Poco Poco, not that this is important lore or anything lol)
ahhh that choice in name makes a lil more sense now! and yeah it really sits in the middle for me, defs not the worst thing but considering the staff list it coulda been a lot more
I think the simple answer is that this was an adaptation of a video game plotline and was meant to work as a visual guide for the game, so Koyama was restricted in making major changes to the plot to avoid conflicting with the original premise.

This OVA was definitely odd with its plot and writing, but the animation and direction itself looks ok despite some errors with the visuals here and there. Though the less said about it's remake the better.
That was the first and only 1 of two times Freeza was back in Dragon Ball Z anime. Facts! Freeza wasn’t dead in the beginning of Android arc, so he never left arguably. But even then, it’s the second and 1 of 3. That served a purely narrative purpose to show how strong Trunks is and how much stronger the Androids will be.
Nicely reworked and creatively implemented within the limitations of the original material's low resolution! I have a Playdia and both games in my collection, but unfortunately, I don't have a proper solution for digitizing them. The newest RetroTINK would probably be the best option, but that's not financially feasible at the moment. I remember years ago someone created a sort of DVD port for the first Playdia game disc-it must have been a lot of work. It's also a shame that no one has tackled the potential emulation of the Playdia console yet, as it would at least make the already existing digital material accessible. Although, it surely won't have a great native resolution anyway, given the roughly 700MB size.
The weirdest thing about the android arc is that an earthling scientist could somehow create multiple beings stronger than base ssj. So yeah, if it was a tuffle scientist instead I could see it happening
Frieza is like kenny from south park these days and nobody cares everyone is just soo happy to see the same guy over and over and over and over and over and over and over......
It's because Frieza is a pretty good villian. Frieza has some real ambitious being a conquerer. However, it's the whole him wanting to right the humiliation of a monkey being stronger than him that keeps him pushing for new heights of power.
@@Dijitz23I see what you mean, but that doesn't sound interesting at all. Besides, Freeza in Super has been either more of the same or a parody of himself. Sure they tried something different with him in the tournament but IMO it wasn't worth bringing him back a 3rd time. Especially not with whatever the hell the manga is doing.
Dragon ball has so much fucking random content you could pull from at any time. Dragon balls universe is so fucking insane they have an entire different anime to pull from at any time

Finished the Famicom game of this several times and I really love how powerful is Hatchiyak. Also the special moves are easy to recover as long as you knew the symbols of each attack.
It's crazy that this is actually canon in Dragon Ball GT universe cause that fake Dr.Gero looking character was part of the reason why Super Android 17 happened, lol XD I watched all TV series, all movies, and the remake of this too cause it was in Raging Blast 2 (didn't knew this was a remake til now too), but I didn't watched any other OVA, so that always confused me in GT since I didn't knew enough of the fake Dr.Gero I felt like. Lol XD
I fucking love how I have no eye for any of this, but there are people like you who can pick out who drew which frame of an anime, based on like an ear lobe shape. That's wild and impressive and just shows how someone who spend years of their lives on their own passion can know basically nothing of another's passion, even though they both relate to the same subject (dbz in this case). Idk. We're all nerds in some way, and I love it.
Just my own personal head canon but @11:33 I believe Vegeta is saying this because the Tuffles forced the Saiyans to live out in the wastelands of Planet Plant since the Saiyans were a barbaric warrior race and didn’t want to intergrate with them which eventually led King Vegeta III to gather an army of Saiyans to wipe out the Tuffles and take over the Planet renaming it after himself.
That's a pre good explanation! This ova doesn't actually ever show where the saiyans exactly lived which is odd. It does in the original backstory from Z ofc, although Koyama's new take in this ova does retcon parts of that original episode. So I'm unsure if he still had details like where they lived in mind when he wrote this or if he treated this as something entirely new. He definitely kept parts like the Saiyans rampaging as ape's so it's possible.
My guess is it wasn’t poor living conditions. Saiyans are kind of Spartan and can handle harsh conditions. It would make more sense if the Saiyans found out the Tuffles were developing Baby, a hive mind virus that they intended to release in the Saiyan population and make them into a compliant slave race ruled by a Tuffle hive mind. It just makes sense if the Tuffles weren’t as innocent as they pretend. Their bodies were weak but their science was strong, so they planned to use their science to obtain powerful slaves who would make their lives easier. They wouldn’t even have to feel bad about it considering how violent the Saiyans were by nature. Really Baby would be doing them a favor, harnessing their strength for the greater good!
Maybe a human a Capsule Corp. sent a earthling around a civilization Tuffle technology Bulma has 1/16 human or Ex-Tuffle even a Trunks and Bra 1/2 Saiyan human
I remember this! It even had a modern remake! Good times watching on the VHS ✨💖 And I couldn't forget about Goku's goofy run on the ice! That was the most memorable scene, at least for me 😂
You know what would of been sick ? If this had came out before Legacy of Goku 2 and they put it as a Hidden level but all the characters had to be over level 50.
The hell i literally forget all about this shit lol. My grandfather had all the anime from the day back in 1996 and up to the dvd and internet this was one of the many cool shit he had. He also had the dbz games that i and others forgot about being on Nintendo lol
Most games multiple endings: Vary with on how tragic or happy they are DBZ Videogame ending: Vary with what kind of form final boss gonna have, and what kind of super attack gonna be use to finish the boss. You know, i do like this concept of multiple endings in a videogame better XD
I loved this OVA despite heard non good critics about it, not the best DB movie by far but I enjoyed it like a kid even in my 36! 😃magic nostalgy. I loved it specially for the topic of Tsufurus and the dark vibes on it, the last battle with Hatchiyack with that gloomy music was very enjoyable for me 🔥
4:32 thumb looks to be on the right side of the fist it just looks slightly odd. perhaps if the elbow was slightly bent and the wrist turned a bit more towards the character it wouldnt feel as unnatural. otherwise if i would throw my hand straight in the air it would probably be wrist forward not backward.
I remember watching this thing almost 20 years ago and being blown away by Yamamuro's art and animation in that small section. Yamamuro was always amazing to see, especially on the episodic format of the show (a Yamamuro episode right after an Ebisawa one was priceless). But in this OVA he stands out particularly well. Up until that point the art was fine and the animation quite limited. Then Yamamuro shows up and delivers the best at both. Since we are at the topic of Dragon Ball rarities, are you aware of that telephone special? Don't know how it is called, the characters just pick up the phone to talk to the audience or something like that. There's a scene of Super Saiyan Goku fighting Cell. The art is absolute fire and I don't know who supervised that. Out of memory it seems to be Masaki Sato, but I could be wrong. Know anything about it?
Yeah I know about that one it’s called "Dragon Ball Z: Gather Together! Goku's World" released by Bandai for the terebikko phone game interactive play vhs console game system in the year of 92.
ahh that one. for the first half Naotoshi Shida seems to animate a lot of it (guessing he was AD as well). the 2nd half is supervised by Naoki Miyahara. that particular fight of Cell is animated by Tetsuya Numako with very heavy corrections by Miyahara. shida genga -instagram.com/p/C7pTPTBMtwl/ miyahara corrections -x.com/datwerg/status/1826379157825356207
That was my exact line of thinking about the Hatcheyak movie "ghost warriors" I had as a teenager I was like, "what does *ghost warrior* have to do with being able to defeat them?" lol I watched it on Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 it would spliced up at all but they only put about 30 minutes of the movie instead of the 50 or so minutes that you can find on TH-cam they cut a chunk of the fight out and they finished him off with everyone's signature blaster move
Maybe a bit unrelated to the animation itself but it’s interesting to note since this ova never came out on a dvd, it had to be recorded on broadcast which looks a lot closer to the cels (color wise) than the dvds like dragon box and orange bricks. Side note: Every time I come back your vids keep getting more well produced, you’ve come a long way ❤
i thought it came with the Dragon Box set back in 2003? but they didn't bother remastering it. although that was from its wiki page and i don't actually own that set so can't confirm 😅
Shame you didn't go through the rest of the footage like the gohan punches, frieza's discs destroying buildings and trunks. His barrier that makes nosense. Not to mention the scenes where the heroes fail and game over. The funny animated dragon that goku takes the ring from it's nose, when he rescues the fairy. Even if the animators are the same the comments were really funny.
"What is a permanent ice wall"? "It's an ice wall which will never melt away." "I see, but we still have to break it down Gohan." i had already watched this at some point and this interaction is so fucking funny to me, goku having to ask his son what a name that basically explains itself means and then saying they have to destroy it anyway despite, you know, it's supposed to be permanent
I really wish the Tuffles Vs Saiyans story was given proper justice, but sadly Super kinda tried that with Granolah which they fumbled so much with a lack of direction
I will admit Tate‘s work is legitimately outstanding here in terms of the animation itself the part where Goku dodges the blast is a legitimate highlight for me 15:17 I might even say it’s better than Hisada in terms of movement, but I wish some of his artwork could’ve been at least a little bit more corrected by Shimanuki the slightly derby and rounded artwork still isn’t exactly my cup of tea
I've been wondering? What is your favorite Naotoshi Shida cut from Dragon Ball? There are lot of nice cuts from him. Also every time you say Onishi I think of Ryo Onishi despite him not working on Dragon Ball until DBS
I agree that this OVA should have been yet another little mini arc (although none of the movie characters are canon, so the anime staff instead would have had to bring back like, the Ginyus or Nappa and Raditz), then we could have seen the whole cool things like the adventures in space and meeting the sea god (and instead of Turles appearing to fight it, if Broly wasn't available, why not have Krillin or heck, use Yamcha, Tenshinhan or Chaozu since they pretty much had hadn't done much of anything after being on Kaiou's planet during the Frieza saga)? Shimanuki is a decent animator from what I've seen, and his corrections are far better than Uchiyama's wretched ones. I'd also be interested to see your thoughts on "Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo" (translating to "Gather Together! Goku's World"), that Terebikko video game, the Terebikko being a Japanese interactive VHS console game system that was like an interactive ☎ toy, and it came with 30 minute VHS tapes, Dragon Ball Z having one of them (this one taking place in the Cell arc). It was also low budget animation wise, and not too high on action/fight scenes.
20:00 Hey, what you got against Red Ribbon? Putting aside the fact that you're referring to manga canon, that revenge plot seems a LOT more personal to Goku than any sort of Tuffle just taking their anger out on Saiyans as a whole, seeing as Goku himself previously wiped out the organization as a child almost single-handedly. Also, after a couple arcs of it, it was a bit refreshing to have an arc go back to earth rather than focusing on aliens.
Turles hating the Saiyans makes a ton of sense, considering his entire motivation was to escape that life because he felt like he was being treated like a disposable soldier.

@WxIxLxLxIxAxMxS The whole Toriyama was supposed to end at the freeza saga but his editor said no
7:05 I think fans were more forgiving since most of those appearances weren't directly canon to the series.
I probably could've worded that better. I was poking at the irony of fans criticising Super's writers for just "reusing" or "recycling old concepts" when in reality Toei's writers were doing the same back then. Not "they brought back villains before why is it a problem now" which seems to be how it came off. Because personally i'm not exactly a big fan of bringing back old villains either.
This was originally made to be shipped with a game, having older characters appear was literally just an excuse to make them playable, so it was fine.
@@forgottenrelics1197problem is most of Super's writing was just poor.... while even the mess that was GT had interesting concepts and improved storylines like Baby
@@jesusbarrera6916 a lot is, although personally I think Super had some interesting new characters and concepts of it's own.

They used to do fun cool things like that back in the 90's.
I love the editing. Feels nice and cozy. Great video :)
thanks so much! appreciate it :)
Remembering seeing this in random amvs and desperately trying to find the ova in 08/09.
They're kinda doing that with Daima.

(Also Popo Poco Volcano is a mistranslation/typo, it should be Poco Poco, not that this is important lore or anything lol)
ahhh that choice in name makes a lil more sense now! and yeah it really sits in the middle for me, defs not the worst thing but considering the staff list it coulda been a lot more
11:58 Huh, it is strange he didn't insert Broly into this OVA given how much he's his favorite character.
I’m def overthinking trying to bring logic into this but maybe dr. Lychee could only revive villains who were on earth
I think the simple answer is that this was an adaptation of a video game plotline and was meant to work as a visual guide for the game, so Koyama was restricted in making major changes to the plot to avoid conflicting with the original premise.
@@forgottenrelics1197 Ok that makes sense.

Great video, this type of stuff is so interesting to me haha

Looking at some good old Dragon Ball scene and all of a sudden a DBS scene comes up, it is kist like a jumpscare, and it makes me wanna cry.

So informative on the Animators DBZ is my favorite and for years we all wondered why certain scenes looked so different 😅
I love this era of Dragon ball z animation ❤
Dragon ball has so much fucking random content you could pull from at any time. Dragon balls universe is so fucking insane they have an entire different anime to pull from at any time
i'd say it was pretty good for what it was. it's pretty apparent this was just a side project, while DBZ was still in full swing.

It's crazy that this is actually canon in Dragon Ball GT universe cause that fake Dr.Gero looking character was part of the reason why Super Android 17 happened, lol XD
I watched all TV series, all movies, and the remake of this too cause it was in Raging Blast 2 (didn't knew this was a remake til now too), but I didn't watched any other OVA, so that always confused me in GT since I didn't knew enough of the fake Dr.Gero I felt like. Lol XD
Pretty sure you are mixing up the villain from the OVA with Dr Miyu who was the primary villain of GTs first arc.
"That weird Dragon Ball Z OVA"
That really inst very specific

Wait, i thought this was an OVA about Eradicating Christmas or something?
This is a Tuffle
PLOT TWIST: Bulma is secretly a tuffle
real
Maybe a human a Capsule Corp. sent a earthling around a civilization Tuffle technology Bulma has 1/16 human or Ex-Tuffle even a Trunks and Bra 1/2 Saiyan human
I loved the version of this OVA that came with Raging Blast 2

Most games multiple endings: Vary with on how tragic or happy they are
DBZ Videogame ending: Vary with what kind of form final boss gonna have, and what kind of super attack gonna be use to finish the boss.
You know, i do like this concept of multiple endings in a videogame better XD

Same, it really has a dark atmosphere that hasn't been repeated since.

I hope you will talk about the newest Daima trailer
Its like the whole DB staff got bored one week and decided to create while on powerful psychedelics 😂
