Top effort on finishing, it looked exactly how i've always imagined the Cheviots & why i've so far avoided the area. Proper type 2 fun kind of outing. Great video as always.
Type 2 fun - I like that and totally agree with you 😂 It’s certainly a beast of a route and didn’t let us down at all with regards to how tough we expected it to be. Still, we’ll be back again next year. Thanks 👍
Oh my god, what a tough route. Weldone both. And what a legend Cheryl is for saying she had an enjoyable day! Unbelievable, you guys are another level of tough!
It was really tough, took a lot to get around. I totally messed up with my nutrition and probably had under 600 calories (Cheryl similar but handled it better) for the whole 59 miles and just under 19hrs of running. It’s not enough!! We’ll give it another go next year and hopefully do a little better. It is a great route but never seems so at the time! Thank you 😊
That was fantastic! The scenery looked EPIC and the new camera is great! Loved the chat at the end. Very honest and you can really sense how much it took out of you. See you both in December 😉😎
Thanks very much Graeme. You’ve no idea what a boost you gave us seeing you at the two locations. The course was extremely difficult and indeed did take a lot from us. Still, looking forward to doing it all again. This dance is far from over! 😂
Great video and achievement. Well done both of you. We had a brief "no" moment when you cut to your after race debrief so were very glad to hear you had finished. Best bit has to be Gary's face when Cheryl says she'll do this event again. Brilliant!
😂 Thank you, it was certainly as tough as we made it out to be so will act as a benchmark for next year. Hope we find it a little easier then….not likely!! 😂
omg- that looked very brutal - i think that was the hardest thing I've seen you do- many congratulations on finishing this - and see you smiling- please stay safe warm and well regards x
Thank you and yes, definitely the hardest thing we’ve done. A nice introduction to winter I’d say! Hope you’re enjoying the current season and all the best for Christmas 🎄 x
Thank you very much. It’s a long time until next December so hopefully we can do more specific training but things like the temperature and bogs is something you just have to get over. Thank you very much, appreciate your comments 👍
Thank you, that’s so nice to read. Really glad you enjoyed it. Even though we found it very difficult it was enjoyable - you don’t always realise at the time!
@@TrailRunningCouple Yeah no doubt about that! I really love the channel's no-frills approach, perfect for route ideas and some unreal footage. Has definitely inspired me to get up north next summer. Living in hampshire, I usually do all my races in the Alps but watching your channel has opened my eyes to what the north's got to offer, so thanks
@@thedoberman6240 I think the Alps could well have spoiled you. It’s somewhere we would love to explore. Thank you again, really appreciate your comments 👍
Fantastic honest video, loved the Cheviot summit photos, as I sit here with a slipped disc for more weeks than I want! Watching your efforts is a great motivator to get sorted ASAP . Poles are great, I find them really useful on the Dartmoor and Exmoor bogs 😂 you get into the plant and leap mode😊 Nice to hear Cheryl commenting on the way off Cheviot, we usually don’t hear or see a lot of her. You make a great team, lovely to see you kept and got round together😊 what is they they say “ what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” Well done both again, you did it 👍👍nice to see you with the tee 👍👍
Thank you very much Ian, love your comments. Sorry to hear of your current slipped disc, hope that eases soon and you can get back to what you love sooner rather than later. Poles - brilliant aren't they? We bought them on a whim really. Saw lots of ultra runners using them and thought it was worth a shot. They've helped so much on ascents and surprisingly on technical descent but bog hopping is certainly another use. Without them I think we would have been in more than we were!! Cheryl is more camera shy than me but as I keep telling her she did a great job. I'm going to ensure she does her bit for the future as it adds a better mix. I certainly hope it makes us stronger. We'll be thinking of that during Lakeland 100 next year and as we mentioned will do it again next December. Thanks again and best wishes for a great Christmas!
@@TrailRunningCouple thanks for your kind words. I look forward to your next adventure video😊 perhaps I can sit in my Trail running gear to watch your next one 😂🙁sad or what 😂 tell Cheryl to keep up the good work, she does a great commentary 👍
Really nice video , I'm very familiar with the Cheviots but will be doing the Goat in Dec 23 . So its its great to get some insights like this ! All the best .
It was a first for us in the Cheviots. I said never again at the time but we’ll be back in 2023. Obviously didn’t receive enough punishment! To say it’s a difficult course is an understatement! Best of luck and thanks for watching and taking time to comment 👍
You both must be immensely proud. Well done to both of you once again. Pure grit and determination and a bit of Northern stubbornness got you around that 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thank you very much. Determination and grit definitely came into it. I (Gary) couldn’t contemplate not finishing and had to give it pretty much everything I had. It’s never pleasant at the time but is very rewarding afterwards. That much that we’re going to do it again next year!!
Thanks Mike, honestly, I (Gary) hated it at the time. I really did, well from the summit of Cheviot anyway. After a nights sleep and reflection it always seems different does it! So back again next year 😊
Lovely to meet you both at registration and at Barrowburn. So pleased you both got to collect your medal as many didn't - conditions were so, so tough. See you in December. New to your channel, so have some binge-watching to do!
Aww, Thank you very much, we both appreciate that. It certainly was a tough day and by far the toughest yet! Wouldn’t have dreamed of coming back during the race but it’s amazing what a nights sleep and reflection does to you outlook. See you next year, can’t bloomin’ wait!!
Definitely more crucial and I paid the price by getting it wrong again! Just makes for a harder day really. Thanks for watching, really appreciate it 👍
Thank you. We’ve recently tried both Inov8 Extreme Thermo neoprene socks and Inov8 Thermo merino socks, both are excellent in cold conditions. For the Goat we wore the neoprene socks. Got cold a few times but on the whole our feet stayed quite warm. Really impressed with them 👍
Thanks both. Filming just had to stop. It’s a shame really as we would have loved to have shown just how bad the course got. It was by far the hardest ground we’ve ever covered. It took all our effort from there on to get to the finish. Thanks again 😊
Guys that looked brutal. Still a good time considering. You may not think it but the training you’ve put in did pay off. Nutrition is a tough one to get right especially in the cold. Be interested in seeing what you did nutrition wise and hear where you went wrong on that front. Fantastic though don’t be too hard on yourselves. 👍🏻
Thanks Simon. I’ve never been great with eating and running. Before the run I had a couple of porridge pots and a bacon roll. From then it was around 4hrs until I had a small chia bar. At the first aid station I had a small cup of soup and half a bread roll. The rest of my food consisted of a mountain fuel flapjack , half of a snickers bar and a gel. Clearly it’s not enough. I do know what I need to do though but never follow my own advice. I leave it too long before eating and then it’s too late and I struggle to swallow food. Ideally I should be eating something small every 30 mins (jelly babies for example) and something more wholesome on the hour….
Thank you, in the video you watched (2022) we used Ultimate Direction Fastpack 20’s. Did it again last year (another video) and used Salomon Adv Skin 12’s which were fine. It’s a great event. Best of luck 👍
Thank you very much. We use two GoPros - a 10 and an 11. There isn’t much difference between them to be honest. Back again in December to the awful race 😂
Thanks very much. We’re pretty lucky that we’ve not picked up anything serious. We’ve had the odd niggle and maybe taken a week off at times but more often than not we’ve chosen to run though the niggle and they seem to right themselves. Strategy wise, we just keep going. We aim to run two 10 milers in the week and a long run of 20+ miles at weekend. We’ve done that for a few years now. So that’s around 40 miles and sometimes over that per week. Obviously if something longer is coming up then the weekly long run becomes longer or we’ll run both Saturday and Sunday. Thanks for your comments, they’re always appreciated 👍

They do in a way don’t they? Lovely rolling hills. I’m sure it would be fantastic up there in summer! Thank you.
Well done guys. Honest review. Stay safe.
Thanks. Our toughest day out to date!!
Good stuff! I never actually knew it was like that up there!!

Outstanding effort guys and a warm welcome to Northumberland. Come back again soon. Best wishes.
