REI Presents: How To Run 100 Miles

  • In September 2017, I stepped up to the starting line of the Run Rabbit Run 100 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, alongside my friend Jayson Sime. The race is a 102.9-mile ultramarathon with 20,000 feet of elevation gain, which is no small feat for a couple of guys who don’t know what they’re doing.
    Jayson had talked me into it, and if I were to be completely honest, I’d say we were there to test out his life philosophy, which is basically that you can do anything you dream up, as long as you put in the work and refuse to quit. That ethic has worked for him in almost every other area of life, despite growing up in poverty, one of six children with no father, and dyslexia.
    In the six months leading up to the race, we figured since we weren’t naturally talented runners, the best thing we could do is work hard. So we ran 50- to 70-mile weeks all summer, and went through a full range of feelings: fear, regret, sadness, FOMO, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, pain, and joy. And gluttony, which is not a feeling, but what happens after you run 20 or more miles.
    How did the race go? You can watch our film, How to Run 100 Miles, to find out. No spoilers here.

    This and Billy Yang’s video inspired me to get into trail running and shoot for a 100 miler someday. The first I watched these were a year ago. I’ve been running 4 - 5 times a week, increasing the total weekly distance every week. I’ve since lost 90 lbs. Two weeks ago, I ran my first 100 miler: Headlands Hundred. I finished and I’m still glowing two weeks later. Look up James Marinas on Strava. That’s me.

    Marine Corps Boot camp 1983, I watched my best friend from high school get sick with pneumonia. He got a 24 hour medical chit to be bed ridden, Senior DI walks in tells him if he dont get up and fall in formation to train, he's kicking him out. We both wanted to me Marines ever sense we were 9 year old kids, the DI's words hurt me. I ran over to his bunk and told him I wasn't going to make it with out him, please get up. He got up and struggled for a few days but he got better, and we both graduated in the fall of "83".
    He thinks to this day I inspired him, truth is he was always been my inspiration. We have been best friends for 4o years now.
    We both feel so fortunate to have been buddy's for all these years. What a great short movie, it made me call my friend.

    I turned 43 this year, I’ve always loved running but my shin always give out on me. I made a decision that 43 will be the beginning of great things to come. I ran my very first 10k a week ago, no injuries whatsoever!!! After watching this, I set a new goal for myself, not a 100mile quite yet but a marathon for now. I am the farthest from being athletic but this documentary inspired me so much ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you

    • @quaditz
      @quaditz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also had huge problems with my shins for like 10 years. Solution? A friend of mine gave me a book about proper triathlet technique and in the running chapter it mentioned proper running technique. You HAVE to land on your middle foot. It will make loud, unfamiliar sounds and it feels to be inefficient or bad for your joints at first, but it isnt. Your weight is being compensated by your body moving forward while the foot is on the ground (= force on middle foot builds up over time) + you have some in / out movement of the foot which further increases that time. This combined with proper running shoes from a video analyis = NO SHIN PAIN ANYMORE (but calve cramps maybe if you are not used to this running style, then your calves need to be up first :)). But they are meant to take stress and can build, your shins cant :)

    • @JosephWheeler14
      @JosephWheeler14 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Der Kanal plenty of people get shin splints with proper form. The clinical experience seems to be pointing to weak/immobile ankles which leads to over pronation. Over compensating with stability shoes are only going to make those immobilities and muscle imbalances worse.

    • @dustinmoilanen7912
      @dustinmoilanen7912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tonyjaradev I second this greatly. Read this book! Do not use any type of footwear that compensates for a natural weakness your particular body might have. Instead, take time and a patient approach to strengthening those weaknesses naturally. If running an Ultra in your bare feet is a little too far to the extreme for you, great. But, I highly suggest going as far as some zero-drop shoes with a more natural toe-box shape so you can use your amazingly capable feet the way the nature (mostly) intended. I have and continue to cycle through low-weight zero-drop shoes (Like an Altar Superior), Vibram Five Fingers and barefoot....and with each cycle my feet, ankles, legs get stronger, more capable and closer to those of our ancestors. Most importantly the runs get more and more enjoyable!

    This is the most amazing story/ movie ever in the world!! I am watching this everyday to motivate me to get healthy and back to the way I wasn’t I have gone through a back injury, drug addiction to the pain pills for that injury, my mother passing and dad committing suicide and the my favorite aunt and uncle that we’re my second parents pass away all by the time I was 25. I guess I replaced the pain pills with food.. now I’m 70 pounds over weight when I used to be a runner and lifter. I don’t eat anymore like that or unhealthy but I sure don’t work out and I lay in bed all day and sleep off and on. Depression has really got to me the past years.. I’m 28 now and have nothing to show for it or anything to be proud of. I lost all I ever had and knew and lost myself. I’m alone. But for the first time this film... makes me feel like I’m not alone becasue I have myself. And I’m all I need. Yeah a best friend would be nice but it’s the inner battle that gets you far. And that love and friendship you have for Jason is amazing and beautiful. And the love Jason has for you!! I’m just gluten to get up.. it’s 3am and I should sleep but in the morning when I wake up.. I’ll get up.. and I’ll commit, and I’ll just keep moving. Thank you so so so much for this incredible film. You have no idea how much you have touched me and changed my life. Thank you Brendon and Jason!!

    I can totally relate to them. I ran the Western States 100. I loved the night. Full moon and so quite and serene. Dawn was spectacular and gave me the realization the end was near. Only 30 hours allowed, but 29 was enough. My buddy ran the last forty with me and we had a blast.

    “Running 100 miles is really far”.
    “ I felt like saying, no shit I had to run 1200 miles just to prepare for the race” 😂

    This was beautiful. I got out of running when I left the Air Force 6 years ago but honestly...after watching this, I just want to lace up right now and go for a run. Maybe I will after I take my daughter to school in 4 hours :)

      Me too! There is an app called meet-up tho. It’s not specifically for running but some meet ups are running groups. Only if you’re looking for some running friends but there is no shame in running alone, like all of us

    I watch this every couple months to keep me going. Beautiful storytelling. I got into ultra running last year. I signed up to do my second trail 50k in May 2024, and I’ll be signing up for my first 50 miler in November 2024.
