$75 Million Beach Property Returned to Family 100 Years Later

  • Manhattan Beach in California is famous for its sun-kissed beaches. But it’s marred by an ugly history: a huge chunk of beachfront property was taken from a Black family. Charles and Willa Bruce bought the land and built a resort for Black people in 1912. In 1927, the city of Manhattan Beach took possession of the land and eventually built a lifeguard station. The prime beachfront property is now worth an estimated $75 million. Now, the city and county appear to be considering giving it back. #InsideEdition

The sad part is that the Bruce family bought that land for $1225. When the Manhattan Beach municipal government seized the land under eminent domain to build a park so they said, Willa Bruce fought and lost a legal battle to get a fair price for the land (she wanted $120,000, but was paid $14,000). The land the government took lay unused for almost 20 years before Manhattan Beach turned it over to Los Angeles county.

I cannot understand how any African person or person original to this land can stomach sharing a smile with people whose families were not stripped of their ability to own, thrive, and just "be". We have to stop telling people to "forgive" and not to feel "hate" when the proper actions of restoring wealth, knowledge of who they were before the notion of "black/enslaved/Christian" was beaten into them. As a European Man, I hope to use my privilege to fight for reparations. Once the last person is made whole, only then can we talk about letting resentment leave one's heart...and not a second before. Americans still have their knees on their necks and demanding love...how mighty white of you.
