All built in batteries will fail eventually, so using (rechargeable) AA's is not only more environmentally friendly, but also extends the product lifespan of the 404 since you won't have to hunt down proprietary spare parts in the future
Really more companies need to have a way of recharging AAs inside the device. I have a little olympus voice recorder that does exactly this with a AAA rechargeable and it's the best of both worlds. Charge with USB and swap out batteries for charged ones or to replace worn out AAAs
5:40 How to enter Bus 3 and Bus 4: Hold Shift + Pad 16 (EFX Settings). Use CTRL 3 Knob to access Bus 3 and Bus 4. Furthermore there are 12 preinstalled favorites: If you toggle to the right with the navigation button while you are in the reiter which says "favorite". And if you push enter with the navigation button you can put Bus 1 and 2 in line or parallel. I hope that helps. Thanks for your content and comparison of both SPs!
the roll button is super handy for chopping loops. When you are on the wave view of a sample (start/end) if you press roll it plays from the last bar instead of having to listen through the entire sample.
instead of a button there is a specific lo-fi effect with diverse parameters- you have 4 bus effects to use + the internal Fx so its even better on the mkii…
Great info! I’m not sure about the mk2 but on the Sx you can also select MFX 13-24 by holding MFX & DJFX LOOPER and pressing 1-12 instead of pressing MFX and scrolling with CTRL 3. I just learned this trick thought it might be helpful 🙏🏽
I have both and I really want to love the mk2 because on paper its the perfect sp with all the new functions and connectivity options. For some reason I just really like the sound of the sx way better. Maybe its just me being used to it, but to me the sx has a way nicer character and overall feel as a unit.
hey its been some 8 months since youve posted this comment and i was curious, has your opinion changed as you've gotten more familiar with the mk2? ive been thinking about buying one of these rolands to be able to make beats on the go without having to lug my big controllers around and dont know which one to pick.
If you want one of the sp’s for making beats the mk2 is the one to get. I still think the sx sounds better and has better fx, but the mk2 is miles better in every other way, and a way more complete solution for making beats. The other 404’s are very very limited in comparison.
I like the limitations of the SX. If I want advanced features I'll get an MPC or an elektron box. Or I'll simply work in Ableton. Menu diving on the mkII just doesn't look like a good time. If I'm going to menu dive I'd rather do it in a fully featured sampler.
I was thinking about buying a 404, but for the same price I purchased an ipad air 256gb... to pair and interface to my roland mc-101. The perfect mobile studio.
@@djwilmer7252 I'm completely satisfied with my decision to purchase the iPad Air 5 with 256 GB instead of the Roland SP-404 MK II. The versatility and advantages offered by the iPad's app ecosystem greatly outweigh the specific functionality of the SP-404 MK II. Firstly, the iPad Air 5's ample storage capacity of 256 GB provides me with plenty of space to store a vast array of apps, music, videos, and other multimedia content. This ensures that I can explore and utilize a wide range of creative tools and applications without worrying about running out of storage space. Moreover, the iPad's app ecosystem offers an extensive selection of music production apps, ranging from digital audio workstations (DAWs) to synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers. These apps often provide intuitive interfaces, robust features, and seamless integration with other software and hardware components, allowing for a highly customizable and versatile music production experience. Additionally, the portability and touchscreen interface of the iPad Air 5 make it a convenient and flexible tool for music production, enabling me to create music on-the-go or in various environments. This flexibility is further enhanced by the ability to connect external MIDI controllers, audio interfaces, and other peripherals to expand the iPad's capabilities. Furthermore, beyond music production, the iPad Air 5 offers a wide range of functionalities and applications for productivity, creativity, entertainment, and more. From multimedia consumption to graphic design, video editing, gaming, and beyond, the iPad serves as a versatile multimedia device that can adapt to various needs and preferences. Overall, the combination of ample storage capacity, versatile app ecosystem, portability, and multifunctionality makes the iPad Air 5 an ideal choice for my creative endeavors and everyday use, surpassing the specific capabilities of the Roland SP-404 MK II.
I know you don't like the sequencing work flow on the Mk2 but its lightyears ahead of the SX. It is a workable sequencer and helps shape the music you're making differently becuase you have challenges getting your ideas accross. Otherwise, both unit s can be an excellent "Efx Box" if you don't sample or sequence with them.
My first device was the MKII, so I'm in that unfortunate mental state where everything older just feels like a step backwards. People are super passionate about the older devices though, in a way that you don't even see in the MPC community, and I love to see it.
look at the boutique tr6. It’s so much better than the 606. It’s got cruncher. Blah. Etc. (.very awkward machine tho). That’s y I bought a tr6s. Wich b t s out of said both. .. some upgrades are definitely better. /. Yeah ( apart from mk7 technics decks. ). Mk 2 all the way
Great video. Im new to the SP world making Lofi on the SP VS Logic Pro. Having a few quantize issues. Seems that quantize is not to strong to shift live drumming IMO. Any way keep up the vids!
I been going back watching a LOT of videos recently... I just got the MK2 a few days ago. Using it paired with an ep-133ko2. A bit overwhelming at first but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I love the skip back feature!! Thoughts or suggestions for a newbie sp guy. Had lots of other gear over the years first sp
Hey great video about a year ago I was bouncing around with which to get. I bought an SP404A (same as the SX I hear) as I felt the price just made more sense for where I'm at as a beginner with mucking around with it.
I'm so glad you mentioned the 16 min limit on mk ii. I thought it would be nice to have one alongside my mpc for like, long foley samples or something but then I realised about the limit. It's as if disk streaming has become some long lost secret of the ancients.
@@JAdeWii_ tempted but I like to put my mpc in controller mode and get those sweet sweet separate outs (use daw like a tape machine), I suppose I could route those to the SP and back in via the DAW though. Also unrelated, don't know if you've seen it but there's some gossip about an MPC Key 37 based on some FCC filings, pretty exciting!
Hi Jade, Have you used the Teenage Engineering OP-Z? I am staring out making tracks with a DAW less experience. Till now I was making guitar based lofi jazz tracks using drums samples and FX samples and made the melodies with jazz chords I put together and then soloed on top of it. I want to start doing this without sitting infront of the computer all the time and also record smaller ideas quickly using my guitar and making quick beats around it. Having synths sounds in different keys ect should also help. I wanted your opinion on what should be the first device I should get to start off on this journey. Should I get the OP-Z or the SP404 MK2 as my first device ? Will really love to have your opinion.
I have the sp404sx and cannot open the software to load sd card onto it . Looks like I'll have to sell and replace with the 404mk2 . The sx seems more straightforward ,so it's annoying . Oh well ..
So I have the mpc live 2 & the old 404 ( only a yr ) & just copped the mk 2 ( yay) / the live 2 not as portable as promoted and the sp's def fit in a knappsack ( for real life stuff job etc..) still learning all three & how to make them work/flow with each other the & next may get the 555 ???
@@JAdeWii_ & thanks for letting me know the old 404 can load an hr's worth of sample time😮 old cassette mixes are def going on there 🤣🤣🤣 lovin these toys

This. Whether a device has easily replaceable batteries is a huge factor in my purchasing decisions.

When you spend hours truncating and pitching your samples in the SX, you'd have an unusual "attachment" to it as well.
Dam that new KORG so bad got you making comparison videos…

I’m lost what does this video have to do with korg?
