Back in the mid 80s there was an animated series called The Super Power Team: Galactic Guardians. It had a Death of Superman episode in which Superman and Firestorm are on a mission in space. They stop on a planet in order for Superman to get something for an experiment he's working on. Firestorm gets lost while exploring the planet and gets caught in a trap from I think an alien plant. When Superman comes to help, he is exposed to Krytonite which causes him to die. Firestorm blame him for Superman death. Superman's coffin is shot into the Sun after his funeral. Firestorm runs off continuing to blame himself. It's soon discovered that Superman may not be dead. When members of the Justice League go to the Fortress of Solitude to settle Superman's affairs. There is an android version of Superman there to greet them. He shows the that Superman had been practicing to put himself in a coma-like status if he's ever exposed to Krytonite for too long of a period of time. This would give him an opportunity to heal himself. Dark Seid had invaded during this discovery. Firestorm finds out that the Justice League members who stayed behind were captured. He goes to get the one who were settling up Superman's affairs. They tell him there's a chance Superman is still alive. Once they get close to the Sun to retrieve Superman's body, Firestorm uses his powers to keep their spaceship's shields from failing. Once they have Superman's body and they are heading back to Earth, Firestorm callapses from the strain. Because Superman was in the Sun, he was able to recover from the Krytonite poisoning. So I guess you can say it's the first time a healing coma is used as a means to explain Superman coming back to life. If I'm not mistaken and I could be, it is the first time Superman's death is shown in an animated series.

When the Death of Superman comics came out people just complained at how anticlimatic it was thought to be.
Lex Luther and others had been putting death traps and trying to work stuff out... and Doomsday just punches Superman a lot. Turns out... Superman is susceptible to punching... really strong punches and a lot of them.
They had to make a comic explaining how Doomsday was able to end Supes by just punching him a lot. Yeah... comic book fans complained about stuff back then too.
