Also one of the few automakers making L6 engine, which has ideal efficiency thanks to perfectly self-balacing structure. That's why it can produce more horses and consumes less fuel compared to similar competitions:

Not bad choice at all. L6 will be much smoother than 3 or 4 cylinders. Sure the power tuning is underwhelming for 3.3L, but the fuel economy is very astonishing. It goes 5L/100km for RWD and 5.3L/100km for AWD variant 254PS.

Sadly, in many countries there a lot of additional taxes if you go for a 3L instead of a 2L, despite the fuel consumption. Here in Greece a brand new 3L engine is going to cost around 17k euros extra in "luxury taxes" during the first decade, while a 2L only gets 3.740 euros in taxes for the same period. It is a huge difference, almost the difference to just getting the Mercedes instead.... If i lived in USA though, i would definitely prefer the larger displacement.

Previously, I had never thought about owning a Mazda. However, with my family growing, I had my heart set on purchasing the new Lexus RX. Unfortunately, I was informed by a Lexus (Australian) dealer that the wait time for the car was up to 2 years, which I found to be an absurd amount of time to wait. As a result, I am now seriously considering the CX60. By the way, I am a big fan of your great reviews! I wanted to add that your review of the C63s coupe in 2019 was one of the main reasons I decided to purchase that car, and now you might be the reason I end up buying the CX60. It’s the short cold start trips that hurt my consumption on my diesel. It makes a PHEV interesting but despite that the numbers just don’t add up in the end. Then there’s the smaller fuel tanks and extra weight that takes the edge off the handling and ride.

I have to agree with the comment about buttons. Making everything touchscreen is not necessarily better. I got a loan vehicle from the Mercedes dealer when my old C-class (with buttons!) was in for maintenance, and I do not like having climate control and radio controls on the touch screen. I did like the ambient lighting when I turned down the brightness of it.
But all in all, I think you should be able to control your vehicle without having to look at a touch screen to see if I'm pressing the right area of the screen. You can not do that in the current generation Mercedes, but it looks like you can with this Mazda. That means it is an interesting car, just for the ergonomics alone.

Great review as always Thomas! You deserve far more views! I always have a soft spot for Mazda. But i hope they use their new platform and inline 6 for a new coupe and a new sedan... Come on Mazda, bring the goods! Not everyone wants a huge SUV! As for this particular CX-60, if i was getting this car and wanted economy i would pick the PHEV version (it also has far less taxes here in Greece). I don't think the diesel is worth it unless someone does very frequent long drives. For city dwellers who want to travel occasionally the PHEV is still king. If i went inline 6 with the CX-60 i would wait for the Skyactive-X petrol version.

Good to hear that petrol engine better to drive vs PHEV. Looking forward to CX-90 in the US. Hoping it will compare well with SUVs like Pilot, Highlander, Palisade and Telluride. In line 6 should theoretically be reliable and easy to work on/maintain. The appearance of car not growing on me. Also concerned the seats may not be comfortable on long trips. Thomas, you really do the most thorough reviews - you answer all of those questions I would have liked to know.
I agree with you on the wonderful, actual buttons for the climate systems and on the wheel. That is a deal breaker for me, I will not buy a car with a touch screen for climate controls.
I have a friend that just purchased a Mazda CX-50 (in the US), the interior is very nice - not Audi nice, but heading in that direction. I have recently sat in the CX-90 and it seems even nicer. The CX-50 seems to be very agile when you push it hard in the corners and yet comfortable on three hour highway trips. I am a big fan of the center control knob, I loath having to take my eyes off the road and play around with a touch screen while the car is in motion - I always end up hitting the wrong button.
All in all, Well done Mazda, and well done Thomas and your team (as always).

It's a "luxury" vehicle w so not do be driven like a nutcase, so it makes sense to be configured on the confort mode of driving than the sporty side.
I would just like some more ambient lighting on the dashboard horizontal line and maybe a climate control at the back.
I really like the fact they use buttons.
The consomption figures mare PHEV a ridiculous choice, this inline 6 is just perfect.
And for 20k € difference, this makes this cx-60 a wise decision Vs German competitors with ridiculous touchscreens and heavy plugin hybrids which reduce their trunk space to the size of a city car.
Congratulations Mazda for this excellent work.

The issue with phev over diesel is that some countries in europe have a hefty tax (at registration and/or yearly) for diesel and a reduction for phevs. So in some markets the phev will make sense (plus, it's smile inducing fast too) whereas for other markets the diesel will be better. Now curious even more about the 6cyl petrol, as yet another "in-between" option.

What timing after my comments elsewhere here.
I am sure this diesel version without 110 kegs of PHEV weight must handle so much better than the PHEV I am about to take delivery of. However I want the PHEV because my journey patterns mean I will get a lot of pure EV mileage and I have fill up from renewable lec at home. Compared with this reviewed car, I also need the 4WD because I live on a farm and need mild all wheel drive.
I miss my last Audi RS3 from 2021 and I loved it. I could have afforded the €20k extra for the Audi/Mercedes/BMW equivalent to the CX60 PHEV, so price was not part of my decision - or at least not too much of it. Had I bought a German car as I have usually done so far since about 1993, it would have been the BMW X3 in some configuration. The decider for me has been the CX60 UI/UX of the interior and controls. To my mind these are so far ahead of the present German design direction as to be a no brainer. I also prefer the Mazda take on luxury and UI/UX especially compared to what Mercedes and Audi are doing.
It may be I have driven such flawed cars before now, especially early on fro Italy, but I like the stiffer CX60 suspension and as far as I am concerned it could be a lot stiffer. I also like a slightly nervous steering setup. I should probably grow up, but it is now too late…
What caused me to do a root and branch reconsideration of what car I drive was a combination of the looming switch to EVs and a personal accident which put me off the road during the last part of 2021 until July 2022. Otherwise I may well have bought another Audi of some kind. I found I like some of the Japanese ideas about design which I would summarise as less is more.

Just one but important note: when you compare any suv in terms of luxury feeling and final finishing you have to compare it with German brands. However if you want to deeper discuss about driving qualities as steering and agility, you must mention Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It’s the real benchmark.
I understand that nobody buys the Alfa, especially in nordic markets, but as a “petrolhead” you should not ignore the fantastic chassis qualities of the Italian suv. I’m saying that after renting it for a week. It’s the only suv with a fun factor when it comes to pure driving characteristics.

Interesting video! Good information about handling improvement over the PHEV. I'm wondering though if the 3.0 in line six Skyactiv-X is still in the plans of Mazda for EU: some recent Mazda US press releases deny it, even for EU, in favour of a 3.3 turbo with only 280 HP, a supposed detuned version of the top american 340 HP for their CX90. If this "detuned" (as americans call it) version of the petrol in-line 6 is "Skyactiv-X" or not; or if it has a proper turbo or only the small compressor needed for the self-ignition work, there's still a lot of confusion, and Mazda Europe has not explained anything yet about this as far as I know. I'm pleased to see that the test is done in my country, in the monumental roads between Can Massana-"Ca la iaia" and Montserrat, and the motorway between Molins de Rei and Martorell. Well done!

1:13 There's TSB in Europe regarding suspension for first cars until VIN JMZKH***111165: Although the suspension specifications were designed to achieve the best balance of ride comfort, ride stability and vehicle control, we have found that ride comfort in certain situations, such as on undulating roadways (where vertical movements occur, especially in the rear), does not meet specific customer expectations: Optimising the damping force of the front and rear shock absorbers at low and medium speeds, Optimising the spring force of the rear stabiliser spring.
The replacement is not done automatically, the customer has to complain about the suspension.
