      I wonder why Mazda chose an odd displacement. I think a 3.0 I6 would have been the better choice (500cc/cylinder) for balance. Then, they could use it naturally displaced or equipped with a twin scroll turbocharger.

    I own a AWD Inline6 diesel after trading in the very poor PHEV model. The engine is a masterpiece. This is the engine the car was supposed to have, and it makes the CX60 absolutely sublime.

    • @Agoomie
      @Agoomie ปีที่แล้ว +16

      If you don't mind me asking, what was wrong with the PHEV model? I was heavily considering the CX70 PHEV based on what I've seen with the CX60 and CX90.

    • @The_Stanman

      Yes, same question as above. PHEV sounds super promising on paper

    • @ChronicallyMichael
      @ChronicallyMichael ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Guys theres loads of comments about it on various Mazda and CX60 forums..poor range, jerky gearbox, pathetic raspy strangled naturally aspirated 4cylinder engine so when the battery is low at high speeds its useless, uses all its battery in the first portion of a trip so for the rest of it your down to engine mpg, which drops drastically when it self recharges , it becomes confused on whether to use battery or engine when pulling away which can be scary at times, cost of electricity to charge in the UK at the moment makes it more expensive than petrol for the range obtained etc. i could go on but the info is out there!

    • @The_Stanman
      @The_Stanman ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@ChronicallyMichael dang, hopefully they improve upon it via software. I'm in the US and there haven't even been first drive reviews of the CX70 or CX90, let alone customer deliveries, so very little info available.

    • @ChronicallyMichael
      @ChronicallyMichael ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@The_Stanman This was the new software :) the initial software was worse, and boy the suspension is terrible for the weight of the car. You feel everything and when going on big bumps the weight of the batteries pulls the car down so it goes right up your spine - There was an optional courtesy suspension change which helped, but it just wasn't enough for me at this price point. The diesel runs much better on its suspension than the PHEV (as the reviewer also comments on in the video) - they really needed to employ better shock absorber design on the car imo

    I’m very impressed with the fuel economy. I have been driving MB GLB200d 4matic for one summer (not my own car) and the consumption was always around 6l/100km. I mostly drove long distance on the highway so I was expecting better. Mazda 3.3 inline 6 has over 100hp more and it’s in a bigger vehicle, yet the fuel economy is significantly better. Despite the engine size. Amazing!!

    • @Kanazawa1997
      @Kanazawa1997 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, it’s ironic how Mazda increased engine capacity but managed to get better fuel economy than most 4 cylinder diesel engines. And I heard that Mazda’s financial performance is quite good recently from its new large products.

    Software recall
    I took the CX60 in for its software recall. The dealer was very efficient and when I came back for it it had all been handled plus a free check over of other vitals. Putting so much into software does help when things go wrong or need to be changed.
    While the update was being done I was given a courtesy Peugeot 208 E GT. I was pleasantly surprised by it. If you accept it is a small “warm” hatch it is a good drive at the speeds you can get to between the main dealer in Leominster and Tenbury Wells in the UK. I would find it a perfectly useful second small car.
    Today we had one of the longer journeys to a family wedding up the A49 to the West of Shrewsbury. The A49 is a well surfaced (for the UK) main road going through some of the Shropshire hills with sweeping corners and pleasing straights. We were lucky to have light traffic. Most of the journey was done in sports mode to preserve the battery charge. I would guess this is exactly the sort of drive for which the CX60 PHEV has been engineered because it was relaxing and fun even in full finery for going to a wedding. Everything just worked unobtrusively and in comfort.

    In an era where everything is digitalized, I like how Mazda has treated their vehicles.. the silver round instrument cluster is my all time favourite design and as a car enthusiast, I prefer analogue style of the cluster (seen in other Mazda models). Pretty classy and neat interior from Mazda. Not tacky. The head and tail light designs are appealing.

With the range of engines available across the CX60 range it's better to be clear that this driving review is for the diesel, rather than just stating '6 cyl AWD'. Fantastic content overall, looking forward to a back-to-back comparison of the entire engine range!

      I went to look at some as a previous Audi and BMW owner to just to get a feel for them. The dealership for starters was of course very bouuj. I was greeted by a sales “pair” at the entrance and was offered an espresso, cappuccino, Mazda branded water that looked like Vose bottles lol, and a Mazda tote bag with a little heritage pamphlet and a few accessories. Pleasant indeed. After talking and looking around, they took me to the “Mazda experience center” where I had a small private screening room to view the engineering process, design philosophy, motorsports history, etc. I was thinking in my head “how are they able to afford this type of experience for customers?” I never really believed how cheap they were supposedly selling those vehicles and in my area at least, I was right in my thinking. A mid to lower range trim CX50 was listed at $46k! And a more basic looking 3 was listed at $38k! I’ve also heard that yea, they are very reliable, but if you don’t treat them right aka, regular servicing at Mazda certified centers only, premium fuel for even the NA skyactiv engines, and letting the engines warm properly, the costs are wayyyy more to fix than a regular eco brand. My buddy pays around $166 for regular oil changes also. So was I a fool to believe I could get away with a more cost effective premium vehicle? Yessss. Could be different in other areas but this is what I got in Houston and what I saw online for CA and FL Mazda dealers. Now, I’ve only ever bought the tad bit more pricey cars like BMW, Audi, and Cadillac, so I’d consider Mazda in the future, but I’m gonna see if I can find a cheaper one somewhere else- maybe used. My 2019 X3 was $46k and a similar Mazda I was looking at, only about a trim option down, was $41k. I like the way they looked and drove so I might get one, probably a CX70 but not without looking at smaller Audis or Beemers first.

    I have written most of what I wanted to say about the CX60 against other reviews of the car on Autogefuhl. What might be useful is an update on my experience so far after nearly three weeks since taking delivery of the PHEV version.
    Firstly, I owe Thomas an apology as the PHEV version really does test the suspension set up. The additional weight of all the electrical gear does mean this is not a car you want to hustle on narrow twisty roads, but is fine if you take a more relaxed approach. On good sweeping fast roads it is a fun drive, as Brian reported on his test in Turkey. If you want to spend the extra €20,000 on the German competition it will be for the adaptive suspension and rear wheel steering.
    One surprise is just how much use I am getting out of the PHEV Electric drive. My journey pattern has settled down to what I do for at least 80% of journeys which are in a radius of 5-15 miles. I am getting MPG (UK) on cumulative mileage since the car was born of >75 mpg and . This will fall back when I take on the occasional longer journey with a radius of 40-150 miles.
    On luxury in the inside and usability, I find it superior to at least the Audi and Mercedes competition where I so dislike the UI/UX decisions. As just a personal view, I find it equal to BMW with some bits better, some worse. In our family the comparator would be something from Landrover, probably a Discovery Sport. On that comparison the build quality of the Mazda is much better, the interior and UI/UX is better, but the serious off road is not as good.

    Very good review, the new CX60 is an excelent vehicle and a big step foward to the premium segment. But the fact that they decided to only offer it with very big engines means that in my country, we have to pay so much in taxes that at the end of the day it costs only 5k€ less than an equivalent X3/GLC. Sad because it looks very cool, but for that price, id rather go for the german SUVs.

    I recently switched from a Mercedes E350D AMG Line Premium Plus to a Mazda CX60 Homura PHEV with Convienience and Driver Assist Pack saving myself £12,000 compared to the equivalent BMW, Audi or Mercedes PHEV SUV. I consider the CX60 superior in many respects. My fuel economy is now incredible, but one does need to work out how to get the best from the Mi-Drive system, spending longer in EV mode than most former diesel drivers probably imagine. Also lowering the regenetative recharge battery capacity target. Early models did have a few flaws (according to the reviews), but having purchased mine a year after its European launch I have not experienced them, so Mazda seem to have ironed them out in later production. I love it and glad I switched from Mercedes.

But, when compared to BMW, the handling of Mazda is a real disappointment. The suspension is made for some other car, it looks like they took something from other model and put it here - the result is unbalanced car.

I think the exterior and interior designs are much, much better than Acura or Lexus or even Audi, but still slightly behind BMW and Mercedes. The new powertrain is very competitive to BMW and Mercedes at a lower price point. I think I might I'd be willing to lay out some serious coin for the North American CX 70. Great review, thanks!
    I consider this as my new car along with GLC and maybe X3 (there I am not sure whether I am willing to pay premium price for a "six years old new car").
    I wonder what is the level of driving assitants and technology compared to Germans in this new Mazda? Build quality is nice, however what about matrix LED, is it comparable to the Germans or not? What about adaptive cruise control? Is it nice and smooth or does it go full throttle and breaks hard when you get close or can it predict and slowly decelerate? How about automatic wipers? Are they usable or are they slow to react?
    I am asking because currently having 2019 Mazda 3 (BP), where lights are ok, but matrix does not work that good (not enough segments), adaptive cruise control is jerky and often thinks that cars in right lane in left turn are in you lane and automatic wipers are close to useless, especially on highways where it takes ages for them to turn on or speed up wiping while not alowing manual single wipe. In my opinion, these are the things that splits premium cars from the rest. These assistants and automation in premium cars just works and does not annoy you. My girlfriend has an X1 (2021) and I would chose it for any route maybe 9 times out of 10 (some twisty smooth road is more fun in Mazda 3) just because how these little things work in BMW.

    3 Month update
    I watched this review again before writing these comments. I am just back from a short drive Tenbury Wells and back again and thought about the review as I went. The interior and UI are exactly as I like it with the right blend of physical buttons and unobtrusive tech which just works. I agree the seats are a little old fashioned and certainly not sporty but in practice I do not miss the greater embrace I might get in a sports car. The steering is very direct and in terms of weight and resistance reminds of cars I drove in the 1980s, which BTW is a complement. I do not like light power assisted steering. I have the PHEV version and there is simply no disguising its weight when you try to throw it around, and the best strategy is to avoid throwing it around. However the PHEV does have a reasonable turn of speed when you need it. The effect is something which is premium enough for me.
    The bit which is interesting is the PHEV part of it. I do journeys in a maximum radius of about 40 miles with the occasional 300 mile round trip. At the moment I really am doing most of my mileage on electric which results in an MPG since birth of 81 as of writing up from the mid 70s a couple of months back. Another way of putting it is I am hard pressed to add half a tank of fuel each month. While we all wait for the charging network to get to something you can rely on, PHEVs really do seem to have a useful role to play. Maybe my next one will be fully electric, but not yet. An agonising decision for a third car in our two person household - a small runabout - is whether to go fully electric or another PHEV; a choice between Mazda MX30 R EV or Mini electric. For reference the third car is a Landrover Discovery Sport which does winter towing of a couple of horses and proper off road.

    Further update.
    My cumulative MPG (UK) is > 76 and went as high as 85 before I did a couple of journeys in sport mode. Not bad for 2.5 tonnes. The MPG result is entirely a reflection of my journey patterns but does show why a PHEV has a place until there are enough charging points for full EVs.
    Comfort and luxury really is all I need. For instance I do not need a rear wide screen drop down display and other excesses presently on the market.
    The car has just been subject to a recall which is due to be fixed in about a week. It is to do with software for the main driver display, so pretty fundamental. Given so much is now tied up in software nowadays, this is unwelcome but to be expected. At least the recall can be fixed online but still has to go back to the dealer, so half a day out of the window.
    It is now absolutely clear to me that any EV only really works if you can fill up with lec at home, which I have been able to. It also helps if you have your own renewable lec, which I do. Most country or suburban dwellers can probably manage this with a bit of investment. All city dwellers in apartments are likely to have real problems filling up, and filling up at a reasonable lec price. In this context some form of hybrid EV looks sensible for at another five years - at least in the UK.

    Current Tacoma, even the 3.5 liter V6 version, falls short in torque compared to the 2.8 liter turbodiesel Hilux, which is the most common engine configuration for the Hilux. Compared to US midranges, Colorado upped the ante with that 2.7 liter turbo engine, and Ford already has its turbo engines for some time now. A Toyota 2.0 or 2.4 gasoline turbo --- same engine used on the Highlander? --- would be most needed to stay competitive.
