As a student, I don't really need a backlit keyboard because my current laptop (Acer Spin 1) doesn't have one either. It isn't a big deal breaker for me because I work during the day time and I rarely work at night. When I do work at night I keep the lights on so a backlit keyboard isnt that important. Amazing review though!

I bought this laptop to use for school and it's perfect. The 3:2 aspect ratio makes it perfect for writing, and even though the low PPI isn't stellar for reading text while web browsing, the display works great for video, which I use for online classes. I do wish it had a backlit keyboard, but for me it's not a deal breaker. The battery life isn't great and it should be and that bugs me.

At 4:47 you said that the Surface Laptop Go does not have a backlit keyboard like the Surface Laptop 3. I was like wait... I have the Surface Laptop 3 and it does not have a backlit keyboard. Turns out I have had a Surface Laptop 3 for almost a year and I had no idea that it had a backlit keyboard. That blew my mind. Learn something new every day. Also great video.

Got the Ice Blue 8gb Surface Laptop Go for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday price of $550 which will be delivered tomorrow.
Only thing that I might not like is the lowish resolution, but I've gotta actually use it first before I judge - looks really nice from here.
The 720p camera is definitely much better than the webcams on the last 2 ~$1000 laptops I've used and seems like an appropriate minimum quality, so I'm actually pretty happy with that, although it make this laptop almost perfect to have at least a 1080p webcam.

This is a mediocre PC at best. I agree with you that the HP Envy is a better choice if you are going to spend for the $899 version. At least the Envy you can change the SSD for a higher capacity. With this PC what you see is what you get. If this PC did not have the name MIcrosoft on it, it would probably sell for a couple of hundred dollars less. One is paying a premium for the name Microsoft on it. The screen size is smaller than the Envy and because it is 3 to 2, for streaming you get the black bars on the top and bottom making for less actual viewing area than the Envy. One question I have is you did not mention whether the USB-C port is thunderbolt 3. I would guess if it was Microsoft would probably charge more for this unit. Anyway even though I am not impressed with this unit I still think you gave a very honest and as always a great review of this unit. Take care.

1st of all, thanks for the great review. But why compare the Laptop GO with the Envy from HP. I have seen also other videos recommending other laptops... But I think this is wrong. There is no other laptop with 12 inch screens. I would consider this one because it is 12 inch... I want a light laptop to carry in my bag, not a 14 inch laptop.... The only alternative is to get a macbook 12 second hand, but I am not sure that's really worth it now ?!? Any advice on a really light laptop 12 inch ?

The HP Envy x360 13, which is at the same price point, is better than the Surface Laptop Go in so many areas. And that's not even mentioning that the Envy x360 is also a convertible that supports an active pen. So unless having a 3:2 aspect ratio is that important, I can't see why anyone would choose this over something like the Envy x360.

For those wondering, don't believe what this guy says about the display. Try it yourself, and you'll be able to see the pixels easily. 148PPI on a laptop is very low. You don't need to pixel peep, the pixels will be individually glaring at you.
If you're coming from other surface devices, especially the surface pro or book line up, the display resolution will make you puke.
But at the end it is what it is, I need a solid 12.5" laptop and although it's a shitty low res display the colours are good and it does the job for me.

wait, for 899 you can get a laptop with resolution even lower than 1080p. why on earth buy such a garbage when other manufatures like lenovo, hp , asus provide much better devices for less money?

I’ve used it. It’s a fuckin shitty laptop. Why? Because of windows 10. Period. I mean, 4 GB of RAM for windows 10??? Even with SSD it wouldn’t be enough to lessen the stuttering, the lagging crap, drivers problems and blue screen of death crashes due to the infamous unstoppable destructive windows updates! Gimmeabreak.
