  • This video details the raw, uncut 4-and-some-odd minutes it took me to install a main shaft bearing shim in my R32. It should've taken less time but I thought using my new snap ring pliers would speed up the job.
    Check out the VWVortex thread regarding the main shaft issues and this remedy, including parts and suggested tool list:

    Thank you for posting this fix, My VW sharan 1.9tdi had its clutch dragging causing the car to slowly creep (even though I had my foot on the clutch pedal!!), and once it went into reverse gear it would not come out of gear until the engine was stopped, also, it didn't like coming out of first gear when car was stationary. After adding this shim it now goes into and out of every gear without any problem, and the clutch isn't dragging anymore, BIG THANKS, Jim

    Great information in this video repaired my 2.0 TDI Sport Touran in the U.K. Got the parts from the local SEAT dealer WHT-001-976 for the washer/shim was slightly translated to EWHT001976 at this dealer and 02M-301-211-B was E02M301211b for the black cap. Be careful knocking in the cap with a soft hammer as I slightly dented mine, this can be avoided by only hitting it around the rim. Believe it or not the shim and cover only cost £11.05 total including tax!

  • @jeffstraker2105
    @jeffstraker2105  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @ Luke:
    Yes its that simple. All you are doing is placing the shim between the bare aluminim case and snap ring so the slack is taken up.

  • @jeffstraker2105
    @jeffstraker2105  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The main idea is to limit, if not eliminate, any movement of that outer race which the snap ring goes over. This problem develops as a result of the main shaft bearing race spinning in that case half; consequently, it takes the snap ring with it and together they machine the case and produce that axial play and resultant shift + grind issues. if you've managed to get it all back together and its all very tight to the point where that race has .000 movement, consider yourself very privileged.

    • @calito96

      +Jeff Straker is it possible to stack two shims?

    • @jeffstraker2105
      @jeffstraker2105  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Carlos Ordonez Well Carlos, I'm sure it's possible in some transmissions to stack 2 in there; there would have to be some insane wear on that case half to make that kind of gap. i would assume that if one found that kind of gap, enough to fit 2, there would likely be a single shim's worth of wear on the outer case/ "accessible side", and another shim's worth of wear on inner case where there is no access unless you drop the tranny and open it up. If you think about it, That bearing we are trying to "shim-up" into place has a similar shoulder on the inside of the case that sits against the wall opposite where the snap ring and shim are. although I never mentioned it at all in my post or this video, there is a little bit of wear coming from that shoulder spinning freely against that inner surface. Mind you, the shoulder is at least 4/5 times wider than the snap ring alone, so it has far less tendency to cut a groove like that in the inside case half.
      Which brings me to this point, and hopefully gives the critics and cynics a second sober look at what this repair is:
      This "quick fix" is a quick fix; it is extremely effective at reviving your non working and dangerous transmission in under 10 minutes and for less than $20. Obviously, The guy who pulls his transmission out, strips it down, and replaces: the worn case half, bearing, and applies some bearing race retention product is going about it the right wa
      Not the most time and cost efficient way mind you, especially if you think about the max life one expects to gain overall from this repair. I can realistically see a modded transmission lasting over 150,000 miles before this specific problem resurfaces in the same way as the first time; by then the average driver will have gone through a second clutch kit and 2 more timing belts, as well as another 30-40 more oil changes. 10 minutes and 20$ is not such a bad way to put off a pesky problem whether its the "correct" way or not.

      I have a gti mkv stage 1 unitronic it has about 200k miles and the clutch,turbo is origional. Only think i changed was timing belt kit. And i changed tranny fluid only once at 100k all i moded was motor mounts intake suspension unitronic tune. Amazing car. I just have to get this cap that covers the bearing cuz mine is corroded bubbly and leaking.

      In-depth reply, I like it.
      There isn't anything but good that can come out of doing this shim mod I'm guessing?
      I've done it, no grinding, no gear issues seem to be happening. The play has gone down/eliminated to, let me be approximate, 0.0010-0.0020. So very hairline movement at the least.

    I've got a 2012 Mk6 GTI that has recently had the infamous mainshaft bearing noise problem. I've been driving the car daily for a couple weeks after first hearing the noise, trying to keep away from 4th and 6th gears where it's most audible (was just about to perform the bearing washer repair tomorrow! what bad luck/timing), but all of a sudden today when shifting from 1st to 2nd the transmission made some terrible sound and now won't go into gear. Shortly before this happened, I had the car go through a lite touch wash; almost immediately after pulling away from the car wash, I heard a small knock sound, as if something may have broke.. it was faint enough where I didn't initially think much of it.. but then 2-3 min of driving later is when the transmission failed to go into 2nd gear from 1st (from standstill). Luckily I was very close to home, so I coasted into my driveway from there. It appears the shifter linkage works (can see the linkage moving when changing gears), but when pressing clutch in (engine running) and shifting into Reverse or 1st, it doesn't go into gear at all. Engine runs perfectly fine. Would the mainshaft bearing issue all of sudden have worsened to the point of failure?

      @jeffstraker2105  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kyle Wolden:
      It can't hurt to try fixing the problem most of us have found. I can't say for sure what your exact issue is without diagnosing it in person, too many variables. Worst case scenario you order 1 shim and 2 covers, use shim and cover #1 on your current tranny. If it doesn't fix it, take it out and put it in your potential replacement tranny with cover #2. Parts are cheap enough to try before buying a transmission and swapping it out.
      Good luck, post results

    • @jeffstraker2105
      @jeffstraker2105  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's odd. There is a shoulder on the inside edge of the bearing that buts up against the inside of the case, perhaps it has worn into the case over time. If that's happened it would appear as though it needs a second shim, which might draw the bearing and the main shaft to far out of spec. I'm looking into an alternative repair for that situation, there are a lot of aging gearboxes out there with this issue and some have more advanced issues than others. I like how this fix has worked and that it's cheap and quick. I'll figure something else out for those that need more.

      When you grab hold of the mainshaft and push/pull in and out of the case do you feel excessive freeplay? Upto 1/8 indicates some decent wear but beyond this 1/4 or so means that you absolutely need that washer and cap done. Do it on the bench while you have it all acessible.

    Hi pal,
    I've ordered this kit over the counter though Vw looked at me like i was nuts ! Lol. I got the part nums off a forum. I take it you put the original clip back in too ? I've gone too a single mass on my bora, and I get gear locking intermittent problem . Supplier told me this will cure it, and worth a shot for 10 quid in parts .. Where did you get your kit from ? Did VW engineer this part to cure the problem ? Cheers

    I have deceleration noise while I'm in 3rd gear ? While I'm.on the gas there is no noise.
    Would this be the fix? Sounds like 3rd isn't fully engaged and you can hear some metal rubbing sound, not really grinding id say but only in 3rd

      Josh Rodrigues I bought a 2006 touran 2.0tdi rare spec at a really good price not long ago and discovered it had 5th gear whine.was getting silly qoutes by professionals.then saw this video and thought ill try it at a friends garage.he didn't know what I was saying till he took that cover off.then he couldn't spot the circular clip which made me shit my pants so I had to see for my self and saw the slit in the clip and installed everything then he knew what I was on about and learned something new.hes a good mechanic dont get me wrong.i have no sounds at all.you dont need to drain the transmission oil as the cap is higher then the oil refill cap.also when removing the cap it will have a little oil on.have a look at the condition of the oil.

    Hy, hope you will help me with something, i just have changed the clutch with all the parts, pressure bearing, pressure plate, flywheel, clutch disc, and the clutch pump (the clutch pump was changed to solve the problem, but it wasn't from there), after that a problem it appeared. Now sometimes i can't get out of speed 1 and R, i mean, i don't have any other problems with the rest of the speeds.. My clutch pedal it's slack, the air from the installation was removed 3-4 times (different periods). I saw the problem it's show when the engine getting warm. It's embarrassing, cause i can't park the car normally, cause it remains blocked in R speed even if i have the clutch pedal completely down. The problem manifests itself in the following way: i press the clutch pedal for example, i put the lever in R speed, i try to release the clutch pedal slowly and when i feel the gearbox has engaged, i press the pedal again to the ground, but the gearbox it's stay engaged in R speed and i can't get it off, i can release from R to neutral just if i stop the engine.. I hope I made myself clear...

    Hi thanks for posting . I have seat leon mk1 cupra r with deaccel whine . Hoping this will sort it .can this be done with gearbox on the car as i havr peeled away the plastics and am able to get acsess to this cap to install the shim . Will gearbox oil come out if i pry it off ?thanks again .

    • @jeffstraker2105
      @jeffstraker2105  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you might see a little oil come out, but if your gear oil is at the proper level you shouldn't be opening the tranny up enough to get down to fluid level.

    • @petrezw2349
      @petrezw2349 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** i went to install today . There was play but not massive amounts. After puttin shim in and cerclip on it was tight , the circlip didnt want to snap in . I finally got it to find its home with a bit of force but the circlip wouldnt spin freely .im thinkin that probably not a good idea to leave it like this . So tryed gettin the circlip back out.because it was tight i ended up bending the circlip . Now need a new one . Any idea on the part number or proper name for it . Thanks again

      im not 100% wether its ok fitting the shim if the c-clip is tight (not snapping back in + no movement on shaft when fitted ), any advice would be appreciated
