Did this on my ‘04 VR6 back in 2016. My 3rd gear growl was crazy before, and I couldn’t believe the slop the input shaft had.
This and a better dogbone were the best things I did to that car.

Manual mk4, the dog bone bushings were the BEST mod you can do. Made the car feel so much better.

I have a 1.9 Tdi PD100 and its started to get some gear groaning noise lately, so I'm defintely going to give this a try. I gave it the transmission fluid, long-life, change when I got it plus the LiquiMoly aditive. Really good video, as ever, many thanks from the UK.

Thanks Charles for really dialing in that transmission. may, I really miss my '04 Mk4 GTI 1.8t 5M...15 years of fun times and that was on the stock tune. I almost thought it was going to be a poly dogbone bushinging the owner put in...but I was wrong

    Great video!!! Well explained!👍
Question: 2016 Kia Soul. Possibly bad transmission…going out.
    A mechanic said…
Symptoms: makes very loud metal like noise (engine area), almost sounds like a steam engine whistle mix .
Car barely makes it up the hill during acceleration…reduces speed from 65mph to 50mph. When more acceleration, the sound increases.
Trans fluid is good and clean looking.
    Over 100k miles.
Original owner, purchased new off the lot.
    Well maintained all fluids.
Car still drives ok, sometimes can stop running at a slow down or stop.
I thought maybe emissions… No check engine lights.
No bad codes or any codes.
Does anyone think this is a bad transmission?

Washer or shim works like you said, but because I'm a pedant and can't help myself, a washer is typically used to distribute the load of a fastener being torqued down, so this would by definition be a shim because it's being used to fill a space and provide for better fit.

Dude your video saved the day again. Over the past few years ive watched your content to help resolve some unfamiliar problems. I recently traded a car for a gti with some issues to have a project for my younger brother. Biggest issue was the horrendous noise from the transmission. I had to get a slightly thicker washer from the one in the video but i wouldnt have thought to try this if i hadn't heard you recreate the noise and then make it disappear. Thankyou!

Sadly, I don't think this fix will work on my nearing 280,000 mile Subaru transmission. It has a bit of a whine because when I bought the car it was a bit low on transmission fluid and I didn't realize until it started to whine after a long trip. Totally my fault. I checked every fluid except the manual trans because it almost never goes low in my experience. My guess is a pretty worn bearing, so similar cause, but mine is more of a high pitched whine. If I ever do the clutch again, I'll probably have a go at a rebuild.

😂 having done this less than a year ago I knew what was coming just based on the title of the video. Naturally I repaired it after listening to the noise for years and did nothing until the clutch no longer worked properly..
I still had quite a lot of play even with the shim (no noise though) but I guess that isn't a surprise after 470k km..

  • @duffman6675
    @duffman6675 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job, but you measured the play in different directions. 0.100 - 0.078 = 0.022" play: 0 to 0.01 = .01 " play. Difference = 0.013 - 0.01 = 0.012 ~= 0.01 shim. Adds up.

Interesting to hear what too much end-play sounds like (thanks!) - surprised you weren't hearing a thud on/off throttle or getting vibration - thrust load from the helical gears will force that shaft back-forth under throttle/coast - my Kia made the SAME noise under deceleration (like marbles rattling in a jar) at >3,000 rpm but worn needle bearing races were the culprit (I rebuilt)

I had this problem on a MK5 Golf GTI, although it didn't manifest itself in noise. Instead, I could feel the clutch pedal pulsing due to the play in the input shaft. The clutch pedal also used to get stuck sometimes. I fitted the shim on my driveway and the problem went away.

The megatronics was taken out and found a lot of filings on the 2 magnets. We were hearing bearing noise in the transmission. The technician used hydraulic oil in both the transmission and megatronics. We found the found the filter in the megatronics gummy. Can you say how many bearings to be changed in the transmission housings. I saw a video and counted 4 roller bearings plus the input shaft bearing. I found a site selling 10 bearings. Can you please provide the number of bearings and the kit #.Also where to get the input shaft cover and the bearings .

Will this washer piece work for a 2012 Mk6 GTI? Just started hearing this nasty sound in the driver side wheel well (transmission area), mainly while in 4th and 6th gears, both load on the transmission and when decelerating while in gear.. I can sometimes hear a ticking sound in the same area while idling, goes away the moment I press the clutch in. The site for the washer states only compatible on Mk4/Mk5 using 02Q code transmission.. I think Mk6 GTI has the same transmission, right? (Not the 0FB?)

I have hamming noise on the Right Side in the area of motor. But you hear it only you start to go ~10 mph (like some asymmetric valve starts to rotate), then it would increase getting maximum at 35-45 mph. Then seems goes a bit down at higher speeds. The sound doesn't change if you switch gears. All that makes me hope that the sound is produced by some suspension part, and not engine (again no sound at idling). The car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier. I needed to replace the radiator there (was loosing coolant sometimes until I added K fluid), on that replacement I saw that the fan was not working, so I replaced the motor there. I saw also that there is some oil on the Right CV Axle cylinder (that one that goes into transmission). I replaced Cv Axle and seal, and plan to replace struts as well, just bcs of the mileage. Please can someone give an opinion if that sound still can be from the engine. Thank you for the great film. it is a pleasure to see such experienced mechanic.

Hi mate, I was having a bad issue, sticking in gear and jamming in gear when putting the clutch back in causing car to either stall or creep, I checked out the play and noticed same, ordered 3 0.65 shims and fit 2 now no play at all and no issues with shifting or sticking in gear
Going to do an oil change will will buy what you suggest
I’m also using a smf and got the neutral chatter until you put the clutch in or driving which is doing my head in, any experience with Lucas transmission fix? Told that the chatter isn’t the flywheel but it’s the gears when free and Lucas transmission fix will thicken up the oil and stop it ?

That's not what I would call a whining noise. My interpretation of a whine (!) is a high pitch noise. That was all sorts of horrible grumbling.
What might you suggest for a high pitched whine in all gears that disappears when the clutch is depressed / coasting? It could be a similar thing I guess, or perhaps the output shaft bearing itself (can that be replaced through that same end cap?) ? thx

YOU CAN CUT A GALON JUG IN HALF. AND STICK THE HANDLE OF THE SCEW DIVER IN TO THE UNCUT END OF THE JUCK. THIS WILL AMPLYFY the noise

What's the torque on the fill plug and drain plug? The Bentley says nothing. I have an O2J, but assume they're about the same

I think I need to do this for my 02J in my 2000 Jetta GLX . Any idea how I can easily find the part numbers online

Had the same problem with my R32, Pulled the cover off, and the transmission had zero play, didn't end up putting the shim in, in hind sight I probably should've. Maybe i'll try it again when I flush my trans fluid.
