- We're back on the AWD conversion MK5 GTI TSI, this time beefing up the transmission rebuild. We convert a FWD 02Q GTI transmission into an AWD transmission. Also we do a 3-6 gear set, stronger shifter forks, billet input shaft support, 3/4th gear support and case support. Of of the things in this video apply to both the 02M and 02Q transmissions.

This video just popped up in my feed... I did a FWD to AWD 02Q conversion a few years ago. I wish this video was out then when I did it. I was basically going off of a ton of research and measurements to make sure it would fit / work. Awesome that more people are doing this now. It's way less expensive than sourcing an AWD transmission that is otherwise the same.
Yeah it all comes down to over plans. If you plan ahead you can do it cost effectively.

I've also did some things to mine just to have a pieceful mind... I think that very best modification to that gearbox is adding the pilot bearing extension on input shaft

Awesome video guys! Working on my 02M right now. New USP 1-2 and 3-4 forks but 5-6 shifter giving me hell when case is tightened. Not able to move fork. Only mods are these 2 forks

Definitely one of the best 6spd tutorials out there. Good Job! Maybe it was a good idea to replace the plastic sliders that goes into the steel shifter forks with some bronze sliders. Also i wish this video explained just a little bit more on how to determine the drill point for the inputshaft support bracket since it doesn't come with instructions and there isn't much really out there.
This was never intended to be a tutorial. However the input shaft support is a no brainer, it can pretty much only go over way. Just take a couple measurements and that's it. No instructions needed.

ALSO ON LOW BUDGET WOT TO USE-FWD-AWD ON 2004 Dodge Neon/*PT Cruiser 2.4 dohc N.A all motor EDZ engine* it's block is identical to lancer GSX,Galant Eclipse,earlyEvo's4g63 /480a & 2.4EDV=Turbocharged version PT-GT Which is the SRT-4 motor the diferences between them is the head fitted to each motor & if has a cast block or aluminium used & if the oil feed blank is drilled+tapped for a turbo the dipstick neck & crank position gear on turbo & srt-4 has more teeth so easier to tune than the N.A all motor models not mention sohc as not applicable to me.& evo has a bit less material on block/can be grinded away to marry the evo trans but that may only be on post 2005 models or a differce with the evo-x transmission but they will all ☆"mojo swap tops"~this was a book in my childhood this truck swapped its body as & wen it wanted to )☆JoeDog☆&myK-9☆Buddie☆

02a/j is technically more complex
@@COMotorsports I don't see it. The 02a/j feels simpler and cheaper built from factory. Maybe the shifter fork/tower system is more complex but the trans overall is cheaper built then an 02m/q for sure
@@SyncroMotoring agreed. However the 02m is just easier in regards to parts and disassembly.
Ok 02j is easier, cost effective. Slight longer gears cause 5 speed.. less time lost on lap track. Also several 5th gear ratio avalaible to street, launch, drag, etc. But CoMotorsport choose to work with more complex/expensive 02M. Why the hell? Da century question!!

I've been wanting to rebuild mine and add an lsd (awd swap seems too spendy and confusing) but also the stuff like pressing out the race and measuring shims is what gets me. Definitely don't have any knowledge for that kind of stuff 😅
It just takes time, and the right tools.
I just dropped an LSD in my MKV 02Q and noticed it had excessive in/out play on the input shaft. Apparently the early 02Q’s have a tendency to have the outer race of the large ball bearing spin in the case and machine the aluminum which creates the play. I made custom shims to eliminate the play and used Loctite 680 retaining compound to hopefully stop the spinning. Something to look out for when building these transmissions.
Yep known problem. The dealer has a shim to fix the problem, I've fixed plenty.

I hate how the 02Q went to a floating input vs conical bearings of the 02M.
Thanks. Its not really a trick, they either need them, or don't. This one has a shim already and lash was fine. It's typically the 02ms I've needed to repair more than anything in regards to the input shaft play.

Do you know if the EA888 has the same transmission bolt pattern as a EA827? Trying to figure out if the EA888 will fit to a 986/7 boxster trans. I know the EA827 will.
Hi I noticed you used the other style metal shift forks that come in a set from vw, that are slightly different then the one sold by usp. Are the style you used as good as the other metal style forks usp uses? Any downsides

Any of these parts interchangeable with the transmission on the mk7 gti? If I’m not mistaken it’s also an 02Q

What flywheel / clutch combo would you guys recommend for the TSI when using an 02M box? Would only be for Stage 1 power

How do you know that brace that goes through both shafts aren't rubbing the inside of the shafts?
I really don't understand why everybody get mad on that bad 02M tranny.. to make it decent they have to reinforce here and there with primary shaft inner bar, both shafts twin bars, 4th gear block, special forks and inserts. They better go with 02A/02J old one. There's no reinforcing parts with it other than lsd and straight cut gear multiple choice sets but they raced with it for decades! Plus nobody tells 02j/02M new gen use new bad synchro type while old 02A/02J use old classic big synchros.. this makes wild difference!

im curious about the power goal and usage you guys are looking for. also about what power levels do the 02m/02q start to fail?
My 02Q in my R had 4th gear failure from track use. its not just power, but wide sticky tires and going around corners also doesn't help. I'm only making 340tq. and the trans failed at 40,000km with about 5-7k of that on track. Currently looking at these mods myself because there isn't much you can do about it, besides going to the wreckers and pulling spares out of other broken R's. The 02Q/M is not a robust design unfortunately.

Is 02J 5speed beefier? I only see bellhousing steel plate to make stronger that gearbox, other than lsd and dog gears..

I have a 2014 TDI with an 02Q in it and i swapped my flywheel to a solid one from the dual mass factory one. I then had syncros on 1 and 3 fail. Its still driveable now that i have the OE flywheel back in, i was just wondering if you guys have dealt with that before?

QUESTION: can I remove the input shaft bearing behind the seal, without taking the trans case apart or do I have to take it all apart?
You're not taking out any bearings or races without taking the trans apart. That should be pretty obvious.
Curious, when you did the preload checks on the diff, what was your final clearance, or tolerance ? About to do the awd swap on mine, thanks and great video
Specs are Elsa/Ekta. Don't remember off the top of my head.

I have a couple questions. Will these parts work for the 6 speed in a 2020 Mk7.5? My second gear synchro is gone under 20k miles and I can’t seem to find parts for this anywhere unless I’m overlooking something based on a separate trans code? There’s not a lot of clear information out there to really make this as easy as it should lol, from what I’ve read the 2020 GTI has the 02Q 6speed in it, but I can’t seem to locate any internal trans parts, anywhere, even from the dealer 🤷♂️ forgive me if this seems like a dumb comment, I’m kind of out of options looking around and need a little guidance. Would also like to know where I could find some upgraded shift forks as well, might as well upgrade if I open the case 👀
There should be no problem purchasing parts from dealer. With that said it won't be cheap and we generally would just source another transmission. However yes all this can be done to a mk7 transmission.
Maybe I missed it but don't you have to drill a hole in the bell housing for a splash lube system for the prop box?

None was of yet, but it was ever so slightly lower than the case so I don't expect issues.

This 02M case was from a AWD car? I'm not sure but I think a FWD 02M case isn't threaded for the bevel box/ transfer case, am I wrong?
02m and early 02Q seem to have them. This is 02q case.

so unfortunately I don't think my fzq 02m in my gli has those bolt provisions. but if it did could you use a mk6 angle drive in a mk4? otherwise a TT trans would be the "easiest" to find today
not sure, MK6 stuff is 02Q and is different in some ways.
How do you set the preload of the gear and input shafts? The diff preload is all over the internet, but i can't find a single thing about the others.

yes. If you watch our video "AWD swap In a weekend" you'll see more of just that. I just did the diff in that one.

Weird question but is the clutch exactly the same no changes to the clutch, I have a racing clutch planning on doing awd conversion in the future I'm just worried about a clutch I'm going to buy an a3 quattro box saves me time and effort 😁
Yes, but it needs to remain the same transmission so 02q or 02m. Meaning if you have an 02m you can't switch to an 02Q AWD trans or vise versa. The clutches are different between 02m and 02Q.
@@COMotorsports yeah I know them boxes have different clearances on the release bearing side of things so if mine is 02M clutch and gearbox can I just put a 02M awd gearbox/transfer box on and have no clutch issues?
@@boostedadrenaline2884 if you have the prevision holes for the angle drive yes as long as you swap out the diff to an AWD diff. If you're just talking switching the entire trans.. then yes as well.

I’ve got a issue with my ring gear & output shaft mating gears. The ones that are permanently attached to the output shafts. Both have missing teeth & the ring gear has damage aswell. Do you know if you can replace the output shafts? any help would be really appreciated
Grab another transmission. use it, or rebuild with match parts.

We're debating if it's worth installing an LSD or use an ECUMASTER EMU BLACK for traction control. What would you suggest?

Do you happen to know the symptoms of a bad input shaft bearing ? I’m getting a rattle/vibration while driving and it’s less while idling but once I press the clutch pedal in the noise/vibration goes away. Would really appreciate your input. Thank you
All depends on the transmission you're referring too. But if it's still has a dual mass flywheel that could easily be it.
@@COMotorsports it’s a 2013 Golf R. I think the transmission is a 02Q4. I recently replaced the clutch assembly to a dkm stage 3 twin disk clutch. Everything was fine. Put about 1400 miles on it and now I’m hearing that noise I described. Haven’t been able to find much info about input shaft bearings.
@@Richie52592 possible too much space on the floater plates. I've seen them loosen. If they get too much slack it will ruin the discs.

How could I compare my FWD diff to AWD diff? Are there any differences in the number of teeth? Where could I search this information?
Not sure what you mean, The AWD diff comes in AWD transmissions and are splined to except the angle drive. FWD diffs don't have that, which is why you need the AWD diff, or AWD transmission.

Yes as long as it had the bolt holes, and you still require AWD diff.

If you're trans has the bolt holes for the angle drive then yes. But as mentioned you need the AWD diff to drive the angle drive.

Depends what parts you put in. But expect 5k.

@@kobusburger3800 the depth wil be Wrong for the axle flange on that side. It's longer on AWD to go into the angle drive. So no. Won't work. Put it up for trade /sale for a fwd unit.
