everything in the OT was building to this conflict and it was Luke's failure here that put the story at the extreme low point. Here he effectively falls to the dark side and backslides everything he has learned in the last two movies.
Remember Luke's primary Arc is learning to control his feelings- here he fails and falls to the dark side. Only by giving up and accepting a presumed death at the hands of the Emperor does he complete his training.

You can see from a cinematography standpoint as Luke is standing there, listening to his father. The darkness and shadows are almost enveloping his face. His fear, rage, and sorrow of fighting his father and wanting to save his friends, darkens his soul, and you see it visually. 75% of his face covered in shadow. The moment Vader mentions that he'll turn his daughter, Luke's face is almost complete darkness. That is story telling through cinematography. Showing us, the audience how CLOSE Luke was to the dark side.

The way I look at this scene is not that vader was afraid, or even bested by Luke.
Vader simply did not want to hurt or kill his son, this is the conflict within him Luke was talking about. Vader only wished to turn him to the darkside, if Luke killed him so be it, Vader only cared for his son, not himself. But Luke refused to be turned, and in doing so, forced Vader to choose, he chose his son.
But Vader wasn't really even trying to fight his son, he was ready to die

It's an actual move in real fencing -- you basically hammer at the opponent's blade to weaken their grip via transferred vibration until they eventually either drop the blade or slip up their defense.
The styles in the original trilogy are much closer to fencing/longsword than the flashy wuxia-inspired fighting of the prequels. CGI not requiring characters to have actual weight also allowed for some flashy moves that weren't possible otherwise.

I've always loved the differences between ESB and RotJ fights between Luke and Vader. In ESB, Luke is still immature, young and has a dogmatic view of right and wrong. He rejects Vader's offer to join the Dark Side almost immediately. In RotJ, the temptation is much more real. Luke understands the dualistic and subtle nature of life more, and has matured as a Jedi apprentice. The Dark Side seems more inviting now - he can use it to save his friends and end the war. He sympathizes with his father more, and realizes that good and bad are just ideas bringing him to the brink of giving in. Finally he fully gives into his hate and rage when Vader mentions turning Leia. It's amazing that Luke resisted succumbing to the Dark Side, even after comparing his hand to Vader's freshly cut stump.

This is by far my favorite scene in all of Star Wars. The way the music swells as Luke pushes Vader back never fails to give me chills! We're watching the most powerful man in the galaxy finally meet his match. And as it becomes apparent that Luke is the inevitable victor of their duel the music shifts from heroic to foreboding. The Emperor's theme sneaks in as Luke is tempted to give in to his hatred, then fades as he regains his composure.

For me personally, this is the climax of the star wars saga. The emotion conveyed onto the screen by Hamil here is something else. You can truly feel that everything that's happed had led to this point.
For me this was the final word in the saga, not the mess that is the sequels. I mean, I don't mind them, but the writing is so poor I just can't accept them as anything more than OK, when I've known the brilliance that is the original trilogy that came before them.

The sequels have so much potential within them but Disney seemed more concerned with what could be made into a toy than the actual story. Kylo is one of the few new additions I like, probably because Adam Driver is (in my opinion) one hell of an actor.
At this stage I'm only looking forward to a decent Old Republic adaption but even then Disney have already shown a level of disregard for lore and structure it makes me want to be spared of the mess they could create, Rouge One is the only movie they've done that I thoroughly enjoyed since their acquisition.

Exaclty, and I find that it makes an echo to the third episode, but this time roles are the other way around : darth vador is more like obi wan defending himself and not wanting to kill his friend/son and luke is more like anakin which is full of anger.

I really, really like this scene! This is one way I recognized that Luke isn't perfect. He gave in to the dark side there, but did recognize his mistake. Remember, Luke Skywalker is not perfect. He is a hero though.

I disagree. He taunted Luke specifically to get that reaction from him. He knows Luke is powerful but inexperienced. Right here, he was trying to show his son what the dark side was like.

It's so nice to see the appreciation for this scene in the comments. This duel is the culmination of the original trilogy and I love it so much, but I can never find any art of this duel online (whereas you can find plenty of art depicting the Empire Strikes Back duel), so I always thought this duel was underrated.

the most beautiful moment is what comes immediately after: luke looks at vader, and looks at himself. he realizes how vader became what he is, and he throws his lightsaber down. mocking in the face of the emperor. AND luke believes so deeply there is still good in his father, he is even willing to die to prove it. by sacrificing his temptation to the darkside, by sacrificing himself, he redeems his father from the darkness, and luke himself becomes the new face of good and light as a result.
