Intro 0:00
The Process 0:55
The Result 3:44 - เกม
The year is 2034, after 10 years of nonstop work modders have figured out a way for the 3DS to play DS games in 3D. A total of five very happy people use this new capability
I was actually thinking the same thing, but I think if the 3DS could actually do stereoscopic 3D in original DS games it would be kind of awesome! I mean, you could also take actual 3DS games that never got 3D support and put that back in on the New 3DS XL utilising the higher power.
@@EpicEmberOriginalI still hope someone can hack Minecraft on new 3DS to support it
maybe someone can reverse engineer those M2 ports of sega classics that they converted to 3D
I am one of these five people.
@@ianswift3521 Unfortunately I seem to remember those being ports to 3DS hardware, not emulation or based on a standard DS game or anything like that.
I swear, with each year that goes by, my 3DS becomes the best system I've ever owned. I can emulate any handheld except the PSP/Vita, any console from the 8-bit/16-bit generations (including 32X), I can play Pico-8, I can play Virtual Boy in 3D, I can play GBA and DS through hardware and with improvement, and as an afterthought, I can also play 3DS!
It really is. You can also play DOS games! I don't really know what else I can add to your list other than the plenty of non-gaming apps you can download for QOL.
And while there's still work to do to make the 3DS as capable as the N64 itself, you can also now emulate many N64 games with Daedalus X64 1.0 and they work fairly well (excepting Zelda OOT; there's an issue with water transparency in Zora's Domain making it nearly impossible to get the silver scale).
NES download play also works with many of the two-player games. This is as close to a definitive retro gaming archival platform as there is.
I had one during the console's main lifespan but didn't have any money to play games - and CFW was in its infancy. So I shelved it for years til like 2017 and have loved it since. I genuinely think it's Nintendo's best console to this day
You can also emulate ps1 games if you know what you’re doing. It's awesome
@@elyjahkidnotagreed
Gyro aiming for Metroid Prime Hunters is just brilliant, what a way to give new life to an underrated game.
Fs. Would be great if it actually worked
The modding community for the Wii U and 3DS community is insane. Legit wizards and I’m excited to try all these recent new stuff out. Thanks for the heads up, Jon!
I would have sold both of those consoles if not for all that cool stuff you can do.
@@seanmcbay Never sell your consoles bro, they're a part of your gaming history. You'd regret it, and I know from experience.
Lets just hope that one day 3DS pokemon rom hacks become as detailed as the GBA ones
@@realthemariogamerexactly bro
@@MarcIsOldies12 Like man, it's so hard to find old consoles at a good price sometimes. I wish I still had a PS3.

The 3DS Community grows stronger, love to see it!
I love it too.
It's worth mentioning the DS offered an innovative wrist strap that also functioned as a thumbpad to use for analog control on the touch screen. My first play through of Mario 64 was using this method. It worked so well that I used it for any game that offered it. In fact, I called and ordered a spare from Nintendo after my puppy at the time chewed the original.
Mine is still around somewhere, I remember using it far more often than the dpad in 64DS and Rayman DS
“innovative” lmao sir it was a cloth strap with a piece of plastic attached
@@cashnelson2306 Don't let the simplistic form fool you. It was well engineered for less friction. Nintendo brought consumers analog touchscreen input before any smartphone ever did.
@@oakley2001Every single touchscreen that lets you move your finger or stylus across the screen has analog movement, even those old Palm PDAs that predated the DS by several years. Honestly, I found that wrist strap too cumbersome, I used it a few times on Super Mario 64 DS at launch and never again. As mediocre as D-pad control was, I still preferred it over that wrist strap thing. Still, glad you enjoyed it and got some use out of it!
@@Wheelman2004 Wow, every single touchscreen. That's amazing. I never knew Palm PDA was so well known for 3D gaming. The enlightenment I get from reading the comment section impresses me everyday.
I was so hyped when I saw the thread for analog in 64DS pop up on GBATemp
One of the coolest things 3DS has gotten in recent years imo
If only they could get it working for DesM and MelonDS. :)
The Mario 64 3DS port is one of the best games I've ever played
By the way, people. It appears that a few months ago, at long last, Golden Sun Dark Dawn was finally made playable through Twilight Menu++. The DS compatibility is now, for all intents and purposes, complete. Absolute wizardry
Have you tried injecting one of the gba virtual console games with the original golden sun? Do you know if it runs ok?
@@Dinosaursofyes it does, i tested it through a vc inject and through open agb firm and it runs perfect, but i only tested the beginning so don't know if it plays all the way through fine, but i don't see why not.
Also if you do the vc inject make sure to use the all in one vc injector cause it automatically patches the save type, i had all kinds of problems when using the individual one's for vc injects cause it makes you manually patch the save type, and i was finding the game not saving, open agb firm just saved fine no patching needed.
@@kila5055 awesome! Thanks a million!
I love the 3DS scene in general. It's genuinely so amazing that a family of systems from the 2000's-2010's can play millions of games across almost every game generation, and you don't even have to know how to code to get all this CFW on it. It's not just the basic homebrew either; there's QR code download sites, lost media still being found, ROM hacks and even new games entirely, even 3D print downloads to make custom cartridge holders, stands/cases, and styluses. I still use my New 3DS XL to this day and play all sorts of games on it.
I just hope the hacking scene makes the system popular enough for me to get StreetPass regularly again(though I have spotted it happening on a few recent instances). A global StreetPass thing would be awesome, especially.
I hope the sustained high n3DS prices are a sign more people are out there playing them.
@@seer6961I opted for a n2DS at first because it was cheaper, but then found out that I love that damn invincible brick. The form factor is so nice for my large hands
Your latest videos have been extremely cool, and really helped to spice up my own 3ds. Keep up the good work!
Flower Sun and Rain getting an analog movement mod is so funny considering it's pretty much just a walking sim lol
Logged nearly 1,000 hrs into Prime Hunters multiplayer back in the day-that mod is so sick.
Man I wish I could have been there! I was just barely in time for kid icarus light vs dark
For StarFox Command, you can change the control type in the in game settings to Type B and that will invert your Y axis without having to apply a different version of the cheat.
Didn't know you could get gyro aim with Prime Hunters, that's amazing.
0:58 TWL Menu isn't the loader. It's a GUI for starting games via nds-bootstrap, which is the actual loader.
1:08 TWPatcher doesn't patch TWL Menu, but TWL_FIRM. The thing responsible for DSi mode on 3DS.
Does that mean that you can load the games through the home screen like normal then? I'd much rather just be able to jump right into the game than open a second menu. Not sure how the cheats would be enabled though I guess
@@jFar920 I stopped using my 3DS for DS games, but on DSi that's possible. I also didn't like having to open another menu and just installed forwarders directly to my home menu. To change settings and enable cheats, you have to hold a button while launching a game.
Maybe there's also something for 3DS, that generates CIAs for you games. Search for "nds-bootstrap forwarders" and you might find something.
@@jFar920 Did you see my answer? It seems to have gotten deleted...
If you didn't: On DSi, you definitely can, so 3DS is probably also possible. You can change settings by holding a button while starting the game.
@@seseiSeki Nope, don’t see the original reply, didn’t get a notification until this one. I’ll look into it though, thank you
@@jFar920 Odd... But this one worked, so good luck :D
Oh, I forgot to mention that these shortcuts are called forwarders.
9:36 I believe you can change the main screen in Twilight menu by pressing L + Down + Select. Thus you could in theory play on the topscreen.
Correct, you can select which screen is the "main" screen. I've used this to play Tetris DS with the Tetris game on the top screen.
9:20
I'm glad you did a video on this! Super Mario 64 DS is SO much better with analog control, and I'm so glad you explained how to use the pixel perfect mode as well because that looks so much better! I'm also ecstatic you brought up Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks with these mods. It genuinely feels amazing to play!
Everyone forgets Mario 64 DS came with the thumb strap thing for analog control. It worked great IMO
It did work great, but it also scratched my screen up
Mine never came with that strap.
@@yordansic I think you are actually right on this. The original DS hardware itself did, I think. Not sure about revisions.
@eqprog a TON of people fail to mention that when bringing up this game.
Man, what I wouldn't give to be 15 again and playing my DS for the first time.
The thumb strap destroyed my screen. I wouldn't recommend using it.
Every video you make answers some of my most niche burning questions i have about systems ive barely touched in years and I'm living for it
Someone made an analog support update for Mario 64 DS on Wii U as well. It’s pretty neat, been really enjoying modded DS stuff on Wii U
I'm looking forward to trying "Nintendo Super Mario 64 DS 3DS"
Another great useful video. I was aware of these but didn't know how far they've come now.
The coolest part is that most of these are cheat codes instead of romhacks. I am SO excited to give spirit tracks another go with a c-stick, and adding gyro to metroid prime hunters blew me away. Insane!
yeah, it means that rom hacks of those games will be even better !
tho I still wish for proper ports to the 3ds
YES! so happy to see more people spreading the word about this amazing way to play DS games, and thank you so much for telling everyone how to do it themselves!
I tried doing it myself and it ended up being a nightmare because none of the guides worked, I really hope people are able to follow your guide well!
Thank you!
YES! Thank you for the tutorial. Could only get one or two of the patches working at a time, this will be very helpful.

11:37 YO WHAT? Now thats what I call innovation! Incredible work!
Amazing stuff! Can't wait to try this out along with the Virtual Boy emulator. (btw regarding the closing music, I just got an arrangement of that posted on OC ReMix!)
Badass video!! Thank you for making it. Can’t wait to try this out on my favorite games. I’m so glad there’s so many people wayyy smarter than me working on 3DS projects and then all we have to do is download, install & enjoy 😂
I love modding misadventures with Jon. One of the best TH-cam shows imo.
When I first did this and played games in widescreen with analog…..it was as if playing the games for the first time or remastered. Worth it.
Wow the Virtual Boy video and this has finally convinced me to mod my 3DS, thank you so much for showcasing these fantastic mods
Huh? Virtual boy? 😮
You're making me get a New 3DS XL with every new video you put out, Jon.
The amount of wizardly required to allow the input hardware to communicate with a game running in DS mode was nothing short of impressive. Sono and RocketRobz really deserve a lot of praise as well.
With a community like this, the 3DS will surely have a lot of years to come. It might be the last handheld you'll ever need! Or perhaps, the last true handheld system...
Every new GVG video gets me that much closer to clicking “buy” on a 3DS XL. :)
I absolutely love the content of this channel! It's a joy whenever there's a new upload!
I used the little plastic thingy that came with the original NDS strap, it attached to the base of your thumb, you pressed that in the touchscreen, and voilá, analog in the DS.
As a side effect, a lot of gaming hours later I had to change the touch digitizer.
This DEMANDED a video for so long, glad you made more people aware of it!
i really enjoy to see all of those videos on 3ds homebrew
These are some game changers, no idea who you are, but TH-cam somehow knew I'd love your content! You get a sub
These 3DS videos are so impressive because of all the new possibilities with this device.
Totally agree with your hot take- I spent a lot of time in January visiting my original white DS lite, and it’s still just so clean and so pleasing
So glad that you’re covering the RTCOM patches
I know a lot of people who like just having eight directions on the circlepad. Like most control sticks, it's not exactly easy to not push it all the way, so having it with a run button you can turn off and on is often enough.
Plus, I mean, the game was completely redesigned with its camera angles and such to make it where everything lined up on the 8 angles.
Holy hell, this just gave me so much motivation to pick up my 3ds again and play games I didn't before!
Damn, I tried this out a while ago but never realized how cool it could be for 3d games. nice stuff!
Just upgraded to a n3ds xl from my base 3ds and these mod videos have been awesome
You just convinced me to play metroid prime hunters on my 2ds. You achieved your goal. Congrats.
This is just magic. The concept of widescreen DS games looks so good! Seeing Mario 64 DS with widescreen and analog controls was cool even if I never played it or the original. And I legit forgot about 358/2 Days despite it being my first DS game. I absolutely loved it and it being my first Kingdom Hearts game, I had no reason to dislike the controls. But that full analog movement looks like magic and I love it. It looks like a whole different game, but also just how I remember it
And then Metroid Prime Hunters... Another one I haven't played, but I've heard people talk down about it. Full analog AND Gyro is insane for a DS game. I'm so curious to try this out.
this is very impressive and makes me curious how some of my favorite games would look with the widescreen mod
This is awesome - more content that makes our games even better please
These improvements are amazing!
thx so much for making this video. been looking for this for ever. now i can play cod with ease. thxxxx
You can also map the run button in SM64 DS to the dpad on the regular ds too. It plays way better with dive/punch on Y and no need to hold down a run button.
This is how I've been playing through Super Mario 64 DS and I've been having a blast :3
Hope some of this stuff can be built in when we eventually get DS NSO - would be a perfect work around for some of the touch screen-centric games!
thanks for this, i just happened to install twilight menu on my 2ds, n3dsxl, and 2dsxl. def gonna give it a go one day
7:41 Unbeatable [white label] (and its parent game which isn't out yet, just called Unbeatable) fits this perfectly and its so damn beautiful. Plus the songs are all bangers.
Good video man,I am excited about phantom hourglass and spirit tracks.I always loved the look of those games. The touch screen controls turned me off and made it hard to play.So I never played played much of those games.I have been missing out on them.I have two Zelda games to beat now
Highlight of my day!! Thanks Jon!! 🙌
6:15 i have absolutely no idea why flying games just feel so nice and natural to be played with the Y axis inverted, like even if it's your first time ever playing a flying game you'll just blend into the controls naturally and smoothly
i am absolutely trying this. thank you
I’ve been on the fence on getting a refurbished new 2ds xl and after seeing this Vid and saw a great listing online I decided to pull the trigger can’t wait to play oot3d remastered
These 3Ds mod videos are great Jon but everytime you make one my backlog of games grows 😅. With spirit tracks and phantom hourglass are the sword controls mapped to buttons with the mod?
This video alone is worth subbing to this channel. THANK YOU JON!
These recent videos have all been bangers keep it up Jon
I always played Mario 64 DS with the touch screen using the little thumb pad thingy that was built into the wrist strap for the DS. That said, my biggest issue playing that way was the 'virtual analog stick' would move location which made things harder then they needed to be.
Definitely going to do this one and revisit some DS games.
This NEEDS to be heard, imagine if Modern DS Emulators like melonDS could have these features as well!
I finally found the time to set this up on my 3DS, and it works beautifully. It kind of blows my mind playing Super Mario 64 DS with full analog control, and not only movement but camera control at the same time! And Starfox Command is so much more playable now - I mean, I played the hell out of it back when it first came out, but this is a fine excuse to do it again.
Learning that I can play Days with full analog movement and camera control made my night
Wow! I'm so surprised!
My mind is blown! If these could have graphics upscaling would make it even more amazing
Time I spend modding my 3DS > Time I spend actually playing games
This would also be amazing if it could also be used with emulators!
Graphic upscaling, widescreen, dual analog movements would be so sweet to play with!
I noticed the CTGP 7 folder on your 3DS sd card. You have good taste
You dont have to set games to run widescreen individually, you can change the default in the nds bootstrap page of twlmenu++'s settings

The gyro aiming is brilliant :)
Disagree on the scaling filters. The reason the 3DS uses a "smooth" filter for DS games is because you can't "pixel perfect" upscale 192p to 240p, nearest neighbor scaling just doubles random lines and distorts the image, it's evident in your own example at 1:26, just look at the mugs on the table, or the stools nearby. In comparison, the Vita was exactly double the resolution of PSP,, i.e. 544p vs 272p, so the backwards compatibility mode could simply double everything resulting in a sharp image with no distortion.
yeah, that's the reason why my DSi XL still gets a ton of use, I never really play DS games on my 3ds
Oh my goodness, I've been wanting to replay Mario 64 DS for years now but everytime I booted my copy I never got all that far cuz nostalgia wasnt enough for me to bear the horrible controls but this is a game changer. Just finished setting everything up and just running around peaches castle WOW, this might be a hot take but dare I say? This might be the best way to play Mario 64 (including the N64 version)
Honestly, I don't see that much difference with 'pixel perfect' at least from the video images.. Thank you for this video - I just modded another 3DS and forgot about the Widescreen change. I modded my first 3ds ages ago but now with all online services shutting down I went ahead and modded another one and I keep finding little things I forgot this time round.
Now I just need a nice way to actually upscale the resolution on 3D games to mitigate some of that classic DS visual chunkiness.
I just looked this up 20 minutes ago... scary that it just popped up in now... glad to have this video though.
Gosh I love this, now I just need someone to make an actual accessible capture / video out board for any of the New 3DS systems and we're good ^^
I still have my pure dump (not downloaded) of a patch Zelda Spirit tracks with the dpad mod just need to see about load Zelda Spirit tracks into Melon Ds as it has screen resizing and if i were to get the widescreen code to also work basically if I were to select to display only the bottom screen it'll be very near playing a PC version
Analog controls don't have 360 directions in the way digital controls give you 8. The circle pad reports a pair of xy coordinates, you can calculate how many directions are accessible over the edge of the travel, and it won't be 360.
Huh, I've never played a lot of these games so this looks like a very good way to start it out!
I played Mario 64 DS and shooters like Metroid Prime Hunters and CoD, with the thumb-strap stylus. It made it perfectly responsive and I had huge advantage on multiplayer games.
For some reason I tried this widescreen hack not only worked on Twilight Menu, it also works on my R4 and retail DS cart (tested on my japanese Pokemon Black 2 cart)
i see that metroid prime federation force is installed on your console
o7 you're the real mvp
It is worth playing ? People say it's bad but I'm new to Metroid (playing samus return rn) and would like to play full 3D games.
@@antonshotpoteita it's very good if you have at least a friend to play it locally.
Which requires two 3DS and 2 copies of the game and a bit of annoying menuing.
The gameplay is very similar to Metroid Prime, but it's not a map to explore like traditional Metroid games, here it's missions based coop.
It's a very fun coop experience and a great way to introduce new players to Metroid.
However it's really not representative of what 3D metroid games are.
Play Metroid Prime 1 on the switch or GameCube for that.
But if you have someone to experience Fed Force it's really a blast.
The bad reputation that it has is due to the time it was revealed.
E3 2015, the last Metroid game at the time was Metroid other M in 2010 that was already disappointing for the fans.
So the last acclaimed Metroid game was 2007 Metroid prime 3.
So people were really waiting for a new Metroid game at this point and they released a chibi aesthetic coop game on the 3DS with no mention of a mainline game at all.
No one wanted this and they were furious, the reveal trailer got the most dislike to like ratio in the history of TH-cam at the time. (Very impressive)
If they were to reveal a teaser for Samus return while presenting this game I think the game would have done better.
It's just unfortunate, but the people that played it usually like it
@antonshotpoteita yes but also no. It just came at a time where metroid wasn't getting any love and instead of a real metroid prime game they got a co-op multiplayer where you don't play as samus.

It's awesome in local coop.
Not worth it at all solo.
Play Metroid Prime if you want to discover 3D metroid but fed force is an awesome little coop game.
You can invert the controls for Star Fox Command in the game's menu itself. No mod needed.
great video and thank you. I will say though when you said to put the SD card back into the computer. I kind of wanted to jump through the screen and hit you.
Doing the lords work John. lol. The best videos on the internet. Keep it up
Not sure if y'all had this problem but when running the circle pad patch on Metroid Prime: Hunters, make sure it's running in DSi mode, not DS mode otherwise you'll get a white screen.
were you able to make the gyro work? every time i push the button combo either nothing happens, or the camera will just start going in one direction
seeing gyro aiming in metroid prime hunter was mindblowing.
I agree on your secrets point, grew up doing exactly that
Oh man, the gyro bit at the end was such a pleasant surprise. I feel bad for anyone that didn't watch until the end.
Beautiful. Now we need updated Wifi options for DS Games.
Pity that it didn't work for me, both in Mario 64 and Star Fox the characters kept going up and left, guess i still need some troubleshooting to see what's happening, but that is absolutely amazing.
how exactly did you put pixel perfect mode on ds games? i couldnt find a video or an article on the topic but it looks really good
