  • The 3DS has many different models. Why did they have to make so many appealing styles? I couldn't help but buy them. Here's the story behind each 3DS console I own.

    As someone who only got a 3DS in 2019, i love hearing stories like this from someone who got to experience the console throughout the course of its life

      My first console was a dsi that I "stole" from school in elementary. When I say stole, I mean I found it left behind at the play ground at recess and pocketed it. I don't remember much about what happened afterwards cause memory is fuzzy. But I do remember that it had pokemon heart gold loaded into it and I figured out how to reset it by accident so I make my own character. Good times. It's what got me into pokemon ngl.
      Later on around freshman year in high-school I had since lost the dsi, and I went to a pawn shop and got me a 3ds xl (not the new model with the weird camera stud thing). It was a red one. I played all sorts of stuff for a while until I wound up breaking it by accidentally dropping it leaving the top screen useless. Was a bummer cause I was just finished with pokemon X (I thought it was cooler at the time, now I much prefer Y) and was starting omega ruby. It was also the first time I bought both pokemon versions. Omega Ruby and Alpha sapphire. I did get another 3ds xl from the pawn shop a year down the road. But by then my dad had snuck into my room when I was at school and took my most of my games and sold them at another pawn shop for his coke addiction... I've never trusted him since and have no tolerance for his bullshit to this day. He's gotten better after being humbled by age and not being able to do anything anymore due to health reasons and general disability, but I still don't care much for him like I used to.
      I spent an absurd amount of money recently to get another 3dsxl cause I wanted the "new" model to play some more recent games that needed the stub analog. It was also the cheapest I could find the model. It was the limited pikachu edition new 3dsxl. Spent like 360 on it. (The stock basic models were much more expensive for some reason... and I bought it off ebay, I don't like ebay.. but it was the cheapest I could find it new/unopened)

    Man, I've been on a "handheld collection videos" kick lately, and you've elevated it to an art form. Everything from the music and cinematography to the personal stories attached to each piece was really captivating. My favorite collections have always been ones in which the collector prioritizes personal quality over quantity. Anyone can buy a bunch of consoles, but it takes someone with passion to explain why they're so special.
    You didn't just raise the "collection video" bar here. You strapped the bar to a rocket and shot it into orbit. Subbed.

    I’ve been pretty dissatisfied with the direction the switch has been recently taking, so I’ve been playing my 3ds a ton and I forgot how much I love this thing. Having an amazing library of games and virtual console is a dream considering it’s such a compact console. The customizability options such as themes, folders, and swapable faceplates lets the charm ooze out while the switch still doesn’t even have folders. Unless there are major changes/overhauls to the switch, I think I will end up looking back much more fondly at the 3ds than the switch.

      Well said! The 3DS is a great console and I share many of your feelings about the Switch. Though I can't deny that I really like a good portion of the Switch's game library as well. Even though I also own those games on the Wii U.

    I relate on one of my biggest regrets being trading in my flame red 3ds to GameStop and later selling my pikachu 3ds xl on eBay. Whenever I got an Xbox one back in 2013/2014 I didn’t care much for Nintendo games anymore but now that I have a switch I’m faced with the realization that I miss my old 3ds, so I bought a brand new 2ds xl on Amazon for like 300$ a couple months ago. I know I overpaid but I really didn’t want to buy used. The 3ds family is going to become the most valuable and irreplaceable Nintendo consoles in a couple years once people realize how hard it is to get a good experience emulating the dual screen set up and on top of that I don’t even know if the 3D display technology is available for consumer monitors. Get them while you can I know even now you have to pay new prices for a used 3ds but eventually it’s gonna be impossible to find one in good condition for a decent price.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a few regrets with trading in old games and consoles, but that red 3ds xl is my biggest. I often wonder if the person who bought it took care of it and appreciated how careful I was while I had it. I agree with you that 3ds games will be difficult to play in the future. Unless Nintendo makes another Wii U type console, I'm not sure how it will be emulated. Even though there are many who didn't like the 3d effect, myself and quite a few others actually do like it. It'll be interesting to see what Nintendo does with 3ds games in the coming years. Maybe they can convert the touch screen controls to button controls somehow.

    I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one with multiples of the same handhelds 😂
    I was a little late to the 3DS line, with my first 3DS being the original in black. I thought about getting the XL variant but figured I wouldn't need a big screen. It would be easy to just pop it in my pocket and play on the go. Then a year or so later, the New versions came out and I ended up upgrading to my New 3DS XL in red because I couldn't find just the New Pokemon version anywhere. Then I noticed the old XLs were going for cheap on eBay at the time and bought a couple of them to repair (Kept a blue one, that is now black) because I actually like the feel of the old XL with the curved edges and matte finish instead of the gloss. My problems started there 😂 noticing I could get the older versions for cheap at the time, I bought 2 broken Pikachu XLs and parts, sold one of them. I was able to find one of the New Mario versions and also the Pokèball 2DS XL. I have a few original 3DSs for parts, pink, blue and red as well as a Japanese Monster Hunter one for Japan exclusives. To this day, I mostly enjoy using my black XL over the New ones even with the circle pad pro adapter.

I discovered it in 2018… and now I have 50 ish games, two original XLs , and a SNES edition. It’s truly better than the switch in my opinion (and I’m a switch fanboy) because the 3DS is truly portable..fits in your pocket easily. Also the game library rivals the N64 library. It’s that good.. I also feel fortunate to be experiencing many of these games for the first time..even in 2023. The 3D effect is remarkable. Even simple LEGO games are so much fun in 3D. Great video.

    Nice comment section, reading it makes me feel good about my 2DS. I asked for a DS with a Pokémon game for my birthday somewhere in the late 2010s, I received a second hand black/blue 2DS with Pokémon Ultra Sun and I was blown away with how good the graphics are for such a cheap system, loved the portable nature of it. I was a bit unsure about the wedge design at first, I was worried the screens might get damaged, but I like the rounded corners and at least I don't have to worry about hinges snapping, and I have since got a lot of use out of it, at home and on boring bus journeys. I was sad when Nintendo discontinued support for the DS family and further disheartened when prices for games didn't seem to be coming down in price as much as I'd hoped with new gen consoles replacing it.
    I keep thinking I should get a SNES design New 3DS XL because it's nostalgic and fits/shows my interests, the colored ABXY buttons are a wonderful nod to where that button layout originated, classic Nintendo flair. I'm not sure if I'd ever want to take it out of its box though, never mind in public, which kind of defeats the point of having it, although I'd have to get it pre-owned now anyway. Furthermore I don't have the money for a Switch and I would like the 3D feature, higher CPU performance and the bigger screen, but I've heard some people say that the 3D only looks good on a few games and that many games actually look better on the regular-sized screen because the resolution is still the same and I worry about damaging a 3DS because I'm used to chucking around my "indestructible" 2DS, physicists lie awake at night pondering what would happen if an unstoppable 2DS met an immovable Nokia.
    Oh boy, I just had a look at prices for the SNES N3DSXL and it costs twice as much as a Switch. I can't justify that. I just hope my 2DS didn't overhear me insinuating anything about its screen size, display flatness and processing power. I think I'll just read more comments until it knows I love it again, thanks for making a cool video which prompted such an outpouring of passion for this system!

      The original wedge shaped 2DS is a great console. I wasn't really into it when it first came out. But over time it's become something I like. It's comfortable and has that unique shape.
      The SNES version of the New 3DS XL is one of the best looking 3DS systems ever made. I don't regret buying and opening mine. I've use it a handful of time over the years always being careful with it. I've never taken it in public for the same reason you wouldn't. It's only going up in price. I would be devastated if anything happened to it. As for how durable they are, I haven't ever had any issues with any of my 3DS's. I travel all over the country for my career and I've always had a 3DS with me. None of them have had anything break on them. Hinges, screens, buttons... nothing. It makes me wonder why Nintendo thought it was okay to make the Joy Cons that are so susceptible to failure when they had an entire generation of handhelds that were almost indestructible. Thanks for the great comment!

    I have had many 3DS systems over the years, and currently own 4, with one being a 2DS. My first 3DS was a black original model that my brother gave me because he no longer wanted. I used that console until the shoulder buttons began to come out and the circle pad began to fail. I replaced it with a used 3DS XL Year of Luigi special edition that my cousin gave me for cheap. I then acquired a red 3DS XL and a Red+Black 2DS in 2 separate trades for my collection. I gave the Red 3DS XL to my sister as a birthday present, and as the 3DS was being discontinued I bought a brand new New 3DS XL Special Pikachu Yellow Edition as my main 3DS (for anyone wondering I lost the IPS lottery, although I'm not sure that 3DSident is working properly since both screens look nice even from an extreme angle.) I also got a turquoise original 3DS for my collection recently, and plan to seek out the other models to fill my collection. All of my 3DSes have CFW installed as well.

    @SkyScourgeGod 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey bud! I'm that guy you've talked to occasionally from your IPS vs TN screens video.
    Wow, you've got one hell of a rich history with the 3DS. To have a story behind all 15 of your 3DS/2DS consoles is a pretty rare thing from other collectors. Most of the time it's just "I bought this one online for no reason other than just to say that I have it" or "I had a drunk one-night stand with this console while browsing Ebay one night". Not you though, seems like you've got a unique scenario or reason for nearly each individual machine you have. I can honestly appreciate that; it means that you're more than just a collector. You actually appreciate and cherish what you have and what you buy. You have a legit reason for wanting said machines regardless of whether you actually use them or not. :)
    I try to be the same way, especially with portables. I'm not quite like you in wanting several variations of the same models, but I do try to get at least one of each available model for my portables and, unfortunately for my wallet, the 3DS has fallen into this collecting habit on my end lol. I have a couple of every Gameboy original, Pocket and Color model (I have more than one because some have different screen mods), my GBA family is only missing the Micro, one of every DS and DSi model including the weird Chinese DS ML and one of every PSP minus the Go. Each console I have also has its own story, but that's too long for this already long comment. :P
    As for the 3DS, last time we talked I told you I had gotten an original 2DS and an original 3DS XL. I have since added a "New" 3DS XL to that lineup, but this one has a twist: it's the Yellow Pikachu edition which is pretty much the biggest reason I bought it. Unfortunately, despite how amazing it looks, the New 3DS XL only reaffirmed why I disliked the "New" model's physical design since getting the Galaxy Edition I used to have. Cart slot, stylis, the right nub, the placement of the extra shoulder buttons, the usual stuff I've said before lol. The only things I like about it vs my other models is the faster loading and the 3D effect, but none of those are deal breakers for me. It's a really nice console, but I'll continue to use my original 3DS XL as my main play machine since it feels so much better to hold.

    Bought my first last year N3DSXL, Fates SE. Gorgeous device. I absolutely pamper it.
    Sadly, dual-TN, and I feel that every time I use it. Even before knowing about the panels, I was very familiar with panel technologies and was put off by the use of TN.
    It also has a slight manufacturing defect wherein the plastic of the right side LEDs is curved upward a tiny bit, causing a chassis gap.
    But total perfection is pointless. I love it, and having always wanted one when I was younger and less financially stable, it's a dream machine.
    Actually managed to get it new in box. And as far as I can tell, there hasn't been another new in box N3DSXL in my country since that I've seen, let alone the gorgeous Fates SE model. The price of even a used one has tripled here.
    Bit of a small miracle there.

    I have the Hylian Shield Edition. I picked it up Oct/Nov in 2020 for $220. I don't tend to collect systems as I don't see the point of having more than one, but I would pick up the Hyrule N3DSXL if I saw one for a good price. It makes sense to have a backup now that the console is discontinued.
    I just wish that the Link Between Worlds Edition was a 'new' one. I think it's the best console design after the Hylian Shield.
    Also if you don't have it already, make sure you get clear cases for you N3DSXL. The paint tends to chip and it can happen through oils in your hand when you're playing, or just the temperature of the room it's stored in.

    I only had the regular cosmic black 3DS during the relevant lifetime of the console. I was still in college at the time, and I was working at GameStop for $9 an hour. I had another job at a PC repair shop as well, but I was only getting paid $7.50 an hour there. With all my expenses including school, well, needless to say I was on a very tight budget. I absolutely loved the 3DS, but barely got to play anything on it. I was only able to afford three games on it: Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Smash Bros 3D and Pokémon X.
    I took my 3DS everywhere though, and surprisingly, the game I put the most time into was actually Streetpass Plaza. Since it was already included with the system, and because I worked in a high foot traffic tourist heavy mall, I got an insane number of streetpasses every day. That was one of my favorite features.
    In retrospect, I'm sad I missed out on so much for this console. I couldn't afford games or apps or themes, and when special editions of the console were released, or even the "new" 3DS consoles came out, I just couldn't justify buying any of them. My regular cosmic black was, and still is, in pristine condition. It worked perfectly fine for the way I used it, and I just didn't have the money anyways.
    Many years later, I now work in cyber security and have plenty of entertainment money, so I've been snatching up some of the consoles and games I've wanted the most, going back even to the Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance. Most recently I got my hands on a Crystal Blue 2DS, which I bought on Facebook Marketplace for $50 and another Scarlet White 2DS that I bought for $40. They were both in pretty bad condition, but I refurbished and restored them, putting many hours into that project and they look almost brand new now. I love those consoles a lot lol! I did the same with a Japanese New 3DS LL that I got my hands on for $97 and managed to refurbish and restore that one to practically new condition as well.
    I love seeing videos like these because it's amazing to see the story of consoles like this, it reminds me to always appreciate the little things and even though I wasn't able to enjoy this console in its prime, I still get the chance to play it now and participate in a very passionate community surrounding it, giving more life to this console. That original cosmos black system is still my favorite, and it's got more sentimental value to me than any of the others, but I enjoy playing so many different games on them that I never even heard of before, and for that I'm grateful haha.

    Very cool. I only wish I had an IPS top screen, but I do have two Galaxy editions, one original, one from the final line of models (totally different...the later one uses N2DS XL parts internally, and the analog). Here's the kicker, and until watching this, I thought I was the only one: both have bottom IPS, top TN. Both are uniquely calibrated, warm top, cold bottom, and the other warm bottom, cold top. The TN is surprisingly good on both. To the point where I've had to wonder if maybe they are IPS, as for a TN screen they have amazing viewing angles, but they're clearly TN when I check with really bright colours.
    It's not personally the only handheld I've owned more than one of... I had two gameboys, two GBA SP's, though I bought the second SP after finding out the light coloured ones had quality backlights. Two DS Lites, though I gave one to my sister as hers broke, and she paid for a second to replace it as she owed me like 10 years of birthday and christmas presents or something like that and wanted to make up for it. Plus they were on sale.
    This is the first handheld I keep buying new versions of, though I will say, if you want the best DS experience at all...the DSi XL. Look into it, the build quality of the DSi and DSiXL are where the 3DS build quality comes from, with a mixture of both matte and gloss finishes. It's really nice...plus the XL version always has IPS screens.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been on the lookout for a DSi XL. It's extremely difficult to find one in good condition. All of the consoles I've seen have scratched up screens and scuffed corners. Maybe that's just something I have to make peace with if I want one.
      Thanks for sharing your stories. Nintendo makes consoles that are fun to collect. I've even picked up a few Switch Lites because of the special editions they've released.
      You're right on the TN Screens. I also thought I had IPS displays in a few of mine because they looked so good. But on closer inspection they weren't.

      @@NeanderMeander yeah, I was looking for almost two months before luckily happening on one that had so so photos, but just enough light angle to see and scratches. Screen was perfect. Price was shockingly low. So I wish you lady luck next you search for one. My next is a DSi, but like you, it is very hard to find a model in good condition (or missing something like the stylus).
      I had the I'll luck of finding a listing on Amazon for the crystal case for the XL, and I guess I missed the boat as the company sent me the DSi case, and removed the XL listing. It's funny that screen protectors are rare for the DSi, common for the XL, but the inverse is true for the protective cases.
      Also yes. As much as I love Sony collectibles, the focus on smaller units and attention to detail work from Nintendo certainly adds that extra layer of desire and outright coolness just to see.
      I don't know if I'll ever actually play on my hylian shield release. At one point I want the two Zelda new xls, but it might be awhile before I can fit them into my budget now. If only the had contrasting gold and black buttons on the inside of the shell.

      @ignasia7230 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's also impossible to find IPS replacement screens. No company mentions type. Just tested and works, resolution, model range, new or scrapped from a defunct system.
      I am hoping the enthusiast market and eventual demand leads to verifiable IPS replacements. Even cooler if the offer calibration choices. Given the demand and number of replacement parts it is a smart niche to fill. Though I can't imagine it's cheap to buy the machines, let alone secure parts.
