As a Chinese person who visits Hong Kong and the Guangdong Province on a regular basis (where dim sum originated), I can legitimately say that Vancouver's dim sum is top notch!

This was not even close to the best of the best. I'm also glad not even the top 3 spots here even made this list. Keep them hidden for locals to enjoy, the last thing we need is some insane lineup from youtube people.

Glad you came to Vancouver and hope you’ll be back. You can best cheap dim sum as it looks like you went higher end. And 11:30 is prime dim sum brunch time... there’s always a wait! Note for next video...it’s sui Mai. There’s no “h”!
in mandarin chinese its shao mai and in a lot of American restaurants its spelled shumai, so honestly the pronunciation depends on where shes from I guess

Chef Tony is great but technically it is in Richmond which is a suburb of Vancouver. As a Richmond resident I must say they have the best dim sum restaurants in our lower mainland. As it is where our airport is located very easy to get to and for our jet lagged foodie probably should have been the first stop. Mikey would have a food Fiesta here for sure.

The day that I go to live in the USA and decide to go to a Chinese restaurant, I will have to make friends of that origin so that they can recommend me and accompany me to eat some of their gastronomy. What I just saw in the video I really liked, and also with her on board, who has a good sense of humor, I enjoyed the video, the presentation of those three Chinese restaurants was phenomenal. That all looked fantastic...especially Chef Tony! A friend and I are headed to Vancouver in July, so this was a welcome video! Unfortunately, we will be tied up for most of the day while we are there (doing some yoga training). Any other suggestions for places to go later in the day/earlier in the evening would be great! We are training on Granville Island and staying in Yaletown.
I grew up in Vancouver, and moved to NYC. In the 17 years I've lived here, I have gone for dim sum less than 5 times in NY. I just wait till I visit home to Van for my dim sum fix. There's many more good spots to go to than these too!!
And order the chicken bun . Black pepper pastry , sweet and sour pork with dry scallop fried rice my fav items at dynasty ..... u need to go back there and try these delicious things

Let me cut in line, give me discount, complimentary food, dessert, drinks, bigger table etc. I have earned my respect because I have excellent credit with the locals in the city and specially the Chinese restaurant industry. I have eaten out pretty much ALL MY LIFE here and when I tell friends, colleagues, strangers and visitors I would always give my opinion/reviews based on fine details such as taste, price, portion, service and the situation. A simple question I always ask “WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO EAT and don’t tell me I eat everything!” Then you can’t base your review on “everything” There has to be a particular dish or dishes that stands out because there is NO BEST PLACE. Every restaurant has their own special dish/item. . It’s all based on “WHAT ERA” you have had dim sum in or what TYPE of DISH you are going to the restaurant for. Yes in this case it’s dim sum. Example dim sum in the 80s, 90s, 00s or present all varies. Here’s my story and list of restaurants that this city had and has to offer. Maybe you can check it out in the near future if it’s still open. Back in the mid late 80s when dim sum was on CLASSIC carts and staff would pan fry turnip cakes on the spot. It was very well balanced in the city or Van & Richmond. Places like Sun Sui Wah, New Castle Seafood Restaurant, Floata and many many more. Fast forward to the 90s. Now this was a huge game changer because Vancouver became the city with the best Chinese and all around food. Big investors from Hong Kong then from China came into play cause their not stupid they knew Vancity had the MARKET! Places like FORTUNE SEAFOOD RESTAURANT located at Oakridge mall was known for their higher end dim sum, dessert, baked tapioca pudding, sharks fin, swallows nest, abalone etc. That location doesn’t exist anymore because of contract less, rezoning etc and times have changed. Kirin with few locations was good when they first opened up but nowadays their over hyped. It’s just a “brand or name” people like to say or use. PRINCE Vancouver - good. Try their spring rolls and xo sauce turnip cakes and more. Dinner is very good there. DELUXE Richmond - not bad. Standard. Not my first choice. FORTUNE TERRACE Richmond - good. Try their Thai style chicken feet, Sui mai, shrimp dumplings and more. Pricy but owners gotta pent the rent for the location right. Next to the Oval. SEA HARBOUR Richmond - ok. Just a “brand or name” people like to spit out. Was known for their abalone sauce chicken feet at one time. Across from the River Rock casino. More for hosting parties because it’s next to two hotels and a transit station. I wouldn’t host a party there haha. CONTINENTAL Richmond - not bad for price, portion, taste and still have push carts. Try their fluffy crust eggs tarts, spareribs, tendon & tripe, shrimp spring rolls etc. Free parking, spacious, clean, good service. Most famous bbq pork bun was back at SEA HARBOUR location when they first open on no.3 Richmond. FYI Chef Tony came out of Sea Harbour to open his own. Custard buns are very good and my favourite but it’s outdated. It’s now called LEAKY BUNS! Some restaurant make the buns black which can make the bun a bit dry. I always stick with original white steam leaky buns. Be careful how you eat it though. It’s hot and leaky haha EMPRIE Richmond same same Free parking, kind of spacious NEPTUNE Richmond same same Free parking , can be crowded SHEN FUNG Richmond Parker Place same same Free parking but I rather take a stop at the Aberdeen BBQ MEAT INSIDE Parker Place for their ROASTED PIG and half fat half lean bbq pork. For soya chicken go to BBQ MASTER. For BBQ DUCK go to NO.9 TIN TIN Richmond dine in and has good deals for takeouts due to covid. Their takeout is actually very busy. take it back old school and go GOLDEN SWAN Vancouver just for the “hood” atmosphere and classic simple dim sum for the vibe. WEST LAKE Vancouver with huge ass pieces of dim sum. Loud and Always packed. Hey that’s Chinese dim sum for ya. I mean which Chinese dim sum places is not packed. The dim sum at Pink Flamingo is top shelf, been eating there for 35 years, Easily one of the best in Van ! They moved locations in the past couple years, due to a fire I believe. Down on kingsway ave.
Even though Chef Tony looks interesting, and it would taste good, it looks like a great way to charge A LOT more. I'd likely want to try it, but I'd go back to my 'regular' stuff. I dunno.. maybe I'm gettin' old.
Great dim sum journey. I would suggest trying Red Star in the South Granville/ Marpole area, which is similar to Chef Tony. A homier and authentic dim sum place would be Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant.
If you come back try Kirin's Richmond location (which I think might be the best) and Fishman's terrace! Also I have a big soft spot for Cindy's Palace in East Van - their taro dumplings are bomb because they put a bit of the mustard/Portugese sauce in around the meat.

Custard buns are very good and my favourite but it’s outdated. It’s now called LEAKY BUNS! Some restaurant make the buns black which can make the bun a bit dry. I always stick with original white steam leaky buns. Be careful how you eat it though. It’s hot and leaky haha

Vancouver food in general is just bomb! Best in Canada that's for sure specially seafood places.
Even though Chef Tony looks interesting, and it would taste good, it looks like a great way to charge A LOT more. I'd likely want to try it, but I'd go back to my 'regular' stuff. I dunno.. maybe I'm gettin' old.

Great dim sum journey. I would suggest trying Red Star in the South Granville/ Marpole area, which is similar to Chef Tony. A homier and authentic dim sum place would be Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant.
Those are my family’s go to places as well.

If you come back try Kirin's Richmond location (which I think might be the best) and Fishman's terrace! Also I have a big soft spot for Cindy's Palace in East Van - their taro dumplings are bomb because they put a bit of the mustard/Portugese sauce in around the meat.

Kinda disappointed the dim sum locations they reviewed weren't served by the trolley ladies, coz those are the best ones and most authentic.
