I play TM since Original 2003 and I still have to learn more about lots of mechanics in the most recent, 2020 game, which is even more "friendly" and versatile than any other game series.
You need a lot of patience to be actually good in this game, gladly videos like this exists and community is more than alive right now.
p.s. - huge dubs to GranaDy, he's actually insane because of using a steering wheel and driving in 3rd cam most of the time

Awesome to see more installments of this series!! Immediately a banger of important information that is super unclear if you don't know.
Started playing this fall campaign, almost to the day it was released.
Looking forward to learning from you. A lot of the surfaces feel wildly inconsistent, with the physics of my car changing completely with slightly different speed, car angle, steering, gear; and it feels impossible to tell all the intricacies by myself just by playing.

I like camera 3 i.e. first person mode. It’s not great for everything, but to me there’s something helpful about the camera and the car being a single unit that both move at the exact same time. There’s an immediacy to it. The third person cameras separate the cameras from the steering wheel and thus introduce an extra kind of gap between your input and how the camera moves on screen. Camera 2 isn’t as bad as camera 1 at this, but with camera 3 it’s not an issue at all: your wheel is your camera and vice-versa. Feels more natural.

I’ve been watching Wirtual for years but I didn’t start playing until there was about 1 week left in the 2022 fall campaign. I grinded 20/25 author medals in winter 2023, I won 40+ Royal games, I made it to Silver 3 in ranked, I finished top 5 in 3 cup of the days (my highest being division 3)and I finished 2nd in Virginia (my state) on a campaign track that I put 20+ hours into.

Then I don't know really how to practice to get better times so it fades until random season longer down the game.
But you and other streamers really makes me want to play again and really liked your casting during deep dip 2... even though I myself never got past floor 1... ice, always ice.

never played a racing game before trackmania 2020. have 52 hrs in game. nearly gave it up as too difficult until someone pointed out that the controller i was using (Gamecube + USB adapter) was calibrated wrong and was only giving me 80% steering max. thats certainly one thing you want to mention. check that full left is actually full left. also had no idea you could bind action keys on controller and i need to do that. i also started playing during the middle of the winter campaign. glad that was over in 2 weeks. still find the game very difficult but at least i can follow the path silver and gold ghosts take.

I've played Trackmania on and off for over a decade. I think I started with Trackmania Wii when I was about 10. Then I've played a bit of ESWC. Then TMNF/TMUF (have collected a total of 650+ hours over many years), and I've started TM2020 about a year ago (surprisingly 250+ hours already, so I'm a lot more active recently), so I'm no beginner and this video is not targeted me (won't stop me from watching it).
I wouldn't say I'm very skilled at the game, I've been playing it too infequently to have a real chance of becoming very good at it, but I have picked up on some things over the years. I would say I'm the best at playing RPG maps (I also find RPG maps the most fun), but there's still a large gap between me and the top level.
In terms of infrequency, I tended to get really into the game for a month, burn out, and then not play at all for multiple months until I get into it again. A couple times I've forgot about these games for years until I returned again.
The biggest difference recently is that I'm keeping a lot more up with the community. Before I was used to play solo in the earlier days of me playing (or I played random servers on TMNF without truly interacting with others). I'm still not interacting a lot, but I now keep up with what else happens/gets discussed in the community.

I've started Trackmania with TM Turbo and played it on and off since 2017
And although I've put in a loooot of hours
I have only gotten 145 Gold medals and about 30 Trackmasters. Although I barely went for those. I still Struggle on the Red maps in that game
And since most of that Playtime was spent in Canyon or Lagoon (since I enjoyed those most) barely any skill carried over to TM2020
Which I've been playing since the start of the Spring 2022 campaign. Having managed to get all silvers in every campaign, all golds in the last 2 before fall (that one was too difficult I am hoping to some day get all ATs (the black maps are so difficult on low FPS :(. )
Love this game, love this community

I estimate I played around 300h in TMNF and Sunrise around time they were released. I believe it's like 15 years ago? Now I started playing Trackmania 2020, I have 25h of gameplay (now measured with Steam).
Why I clicked your video - it was recommended to me, as I'm looking for some explainations, I think I finally figured out ice, now I need to master it, because I still get pretty random results.
Controller - Steam Deck. Previously it was keyboard and that's my preferred controller, but I don't have a computer powerful enough for Trackmania.

On the 'controller vs keyboard' debate - there isn't really as much "pros and cons to both" as the video makes it sound. You can absolutely just use the d-pad on a controller and then have access to analog AND digital inputs for steering depending which is more advantageous at the time.
Keyboard is theoretically almost equal with the action keys, but a) the amount of focus/mechanical demand to get the same result as controller makes it worse in an objective sense, and b) its still not 100% equal in precision/flexibility.
Just about the only actual non-subjective advantage keyboard could have over controller is a minor one: controllers have that thumb travel distance between dpad < and dpad > , which would result in a couple of frames of neutral steering in between both.
But even that is resolvable with controller if you want to bind steerleft and steerright to the bumpers for example, which functionally would make it like keyboard -- and using that as an argument seems fair if we'll consider keyboard actionkeys a fair point.

Hey man! Great video, great pacing and narration, but I do have one bit of criticism; the camera sweeps are hanging or dropping frames quite a lot which looks jarring, almost gives me motion sickness. The regular replays you show don’t seem to have that issue, so not sure what causes it. I like views like this in general, they add a lot of visual interest during narration and just show how beautiful of a game TM is, but if they’re not actually smooth, they look irritating. Maybe you could try rendering these camera sweeps to a video with the replay editor directly so they have a consistent framerate instead of screen-capping them?
