Is This The UGLIEST Colour? German Greenish Raw Umber | Daniel Smith Watercolor

  • I know we all love to have pretty colours in our palettes, but how about ugly ones? I came to the conclusion when painting out Daniel Smith's dot cards, that German Greenish Raw Umber is the ugliest of them all! But of course, by my logic, I had to then have it for my collection. So today I will be taking a closer look at this less than attractive colour, and we can decide for ourselves if it is truly hideous, or UBU (Ugly But Useful), lol.
    Disclaimer: this is in no way meant to be offensive or disparaging of Daniel Smith watercolour paints (which are excellent); it's just a bit of silly fun based on my own personal opinion. And hey, I DID buy it! 😂

    I will never understand why natural, muted tones are seen as "ugly" by so many people. It's wild. The natural world around us doesn't have many bright, pure, "clean" colors.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha true that! It was just my visceral reaction when first trying the colour. Like when you swatch out all the dots and so many of them are just so stunningly beautiful when you wet them, then this one was "ewww" by comparison! 😂 But really it is a very useful colour, and perfect for natural scenes.

    It's one of my favorite colors. I use it both as a muted olive green, and as a muted yellow (even more muted than raw sienna). In most book illustration we rarely use pure colors, and yellows usually aren't favored (along pure greens). So on an autumn or muted palette for a vintage-looking book illustration, this color is a must-have. Along sepia (your base brown), transparent red oxide (your burnt sienna), indian red (your red-magenta), moonglow (your purple), payne's gray (your blue), and then the German Greenish Umber as both your green and your yellow. That 6-color muted palette can do wonders for a specific type of illustration look.

    Becky, many thanks for cheering me up! (nothing serious - I was having a sort-of tired bleurgh moment) This made me laugh out loud (the stuff from the bottom of the duck pond...) , and then intrigued as you talked about what I thought at first was Kanto (and thinking, what *is* kanto? - well, it is past my bedtime!) and then realised was a Cane Toad!
    What a grim sort of beast it is! But the painting was amazing. As others have commented, as a landscape / urban landscape artist, raw umber is a good colour to have - it's the 13th in my 12 colour half-pan palette and in the 12 full pan set, it has to share a space with a half pan of burnt umber.
    Not sure this one would find a place, though, as it's just not strong enough, and wouldn't replace the raw umber.
    Anyway, thanks - I'm still smiling and have another piece of random information to tuck away in my brain cell. "Kanto and Duck poo..." 😊

    This colour is very useful for landscapes and animal paintings. I've used it a lot for my bird paintings, since my native birds are very often this subdues neutral green brown colour that takes a lot of time mixing and adjusting if you don't have green umber. I've learned to love it for it's usefulness since it reminds me of birds rather than bird poo :)

    Think it might be useful to mute greens for landscapes.
    Non-native species are such a major issue. When I lived in Hawaii, the mongoose and feral cats did a number on the native ground nesting birds. When I left in 2001, they had either a toad or frog issue. Living now in Central Florida, there is a lot of nervousness about the pythons that have established themselves in southern Florida. I hike and do volunteer trail work. Wild pigs, Brazilian Pepper bushes,and Ceasar Weed plants are a major headache for hiking and trail work.
    Love your toad. Glad you were able to "play".

    I have Da Vinci's Raw umber Natural, and I think it's probably their version of this one. I don't use it a ton, but I agree, it's nice for neutralizing other colours when you want some granulation. I was planning on trying to mix skin tones with it. I used it for the lighter browns in a nightjar painting too.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeckyTregear yeah, I figured for when I'm not looking for perfect alabaster skin; more for wind weathered skin, or freckles :) But also, Da Vinci tends to have finer/smoother granulation than Daniel Smith, so it might be more versatile than I think. Your frog turned out great :)

    Wow! It is a bit of an ooky odd colour out of the tube! LOL But there is some appeal to it for sure. I have recently been drawn to earthtones and exploring the various ochres, siennas, umbers, lunar earth and lunar red rock by D.S. My dot card had a large glob of this German greenish raw umber; so out of curiosity I just did a few mixings with several blues and blue/green and this is what I found:
    ultramarine turquoise = lovely shades and one is extremely close to tera verte
    cobalt blue = super soft and muted perelyne green
    cobalt blue violet = slightly violet sepia type colour
    ultramarine blue = beautiful grays with a slight hint of green
    You are right Becky it doesn't have that strong a tinting strength but oooooh the colours are just lovely!! Having seen these mixes I can definitely see how @Strawberry Sparrow uses them in clouds! The various tones would give such gorgeous depth to them! I am adding this to my cart today and can't wait for it to arrive and try it out some more mixing on a larger format. It makes me sad I am unable to use any of your links to help fund your channel; I'm in Canada and can't seem to get any of the links to Jackson's to work. :( But I did definitely hit subscribe, like button and am excited to check out more of you videos in the coming weeks!

    after working for a few years with earth pigments, collecting them myself as well as making watercolors from commercial earth pigments, I rarely use anything else anymore, except Ultramarine Blue and a few other synthetic pigments like Cadmiums and Titanium pigments (especially for really good orange tones, which are hard to achieve only with pure natural ochres).

    I can think of a million uses for that one, it’s definitely one of those colours.
    And wow, as a Queensland girl, it’s perfect for a cane toad. Damn things are a total menace.

    This is subjective - i could certainly envisage using this in a variety of compositions - If you put this in the context of a dark skintone or a landscape I think you could certainly find a place for it - thanks for sharing Big Like👍🏻 🎨 👩🏻‍🎨

      Oh very subjective for sure! And as much as it isn't a very pretty colour, it has a lot of uses so I am glad to have it in my palette 😊

    Ha ha ha ... duck poo brown ....I will always think of greenish raw umber that way from now on lol...... Love your cane toad Becky but yeah still not a fan of the color if I need it I will make it....I"ll save my penny's for something else.... Thanks for the demo.

      I bought it "for the channel" (lol) but it has grown on me and it's now a welcome addition to my palette 🎨

    I would like to see how it works with other colours, I could see it as being useful for a value underpainting as it has low tinting strength and brighter pigment will take easily over it. Your cane toad is good, and yes, a lesson on not introducing a species that has no natural predators, though it has an interesting history it is lethal to other species. I do not dislike this colour it somewhat reminds me of faded sepia too. Also old damp algae coated concrete! Maybe not so common where you are. The duller earths are useful, just not that inspiring!

      I totally agree! It would be a great algae colour, and is a nice tone for underpaintings etc, though it is not very staining.

    de not a nice colour on its own, but it did work really well for colouring the toad 😀

    Hmmm, German greenish gurbulish raw umber😂 As you said, it’s quite unappealing in the palette and even the swatch, but I can see the use for it now after your toad painting! That toad definitely looks like royalty and the painting reminds me of a portrait of an villainous ruler😂
