  • Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are swatching and comparing a few different brands of Terre Verte/Earth Green: Winsor & Newton, Sennelier, Schminke, Daler Rowney, Holbein, Rembrandt, QOR, Daniel Smith, Renesans, Old Holland, A.Gallo, Paul Rubens and Lukas.
Earth Green is a soft, muted green that can be used for atmospheric landscapes, portraits, but my favourite usage is for pottery...
I will also try a simple sketch! And lots of mixes...

I love this shade! I actually made my own from real earth pigment, and it’s lovely! PG23 Cyprus Green Earth. One jar will last me more than a lifetime! But I have used it for some custom blends with pbk11 for extra granulation, and a moody look.

Now this was a bit of an eye opener Elisabetta. I have Rembrandt, W&N and Sennelier. Your painting of the lovely, traditional teapot using Rembrandt and a little violet is beautiful and shows the true beauty of a low tinting colour. Many artists seem to write off a low tinting colour, and I have no idea why. Watercolour has the ability to be high tinting, giving strong, punchy artwork, but it also can be very delicate. I feel there is current leaning toward high chroma paints which I feel is a shame. Having both strong and low tinting colours in your palette, as you just proved in your lovely leaves, gives a lovely balance. Rembrandt’s Green Earth is absolutely stunning in mixes. My favourite was mixing it with Potters Pink, giving a new, delicate colour that granulates beautifully. Much thanks for all you do to help us understand the nuances of pigments. 👩🏻‍🎨🖌️🎨❤️

I have the WN Terre Vert (with the mixed pigments). I liked the color but found it *very* hard to re-wet (dried from tube) & didn't use it much for years. I then added a bit of honey to the paint and now it re-wets easier. I've since fell in love with it for use in greenery (leaves and such) It's subtle granulation is lovely and it has earned a permanent spot on my palette.
I didn't know there was a single pigment version. I will be sure to replace it with one them when mine runs out.
    Thanks for sharing!

The comparison is quite nice. For some people who love intense and vibrant colors(including me) may think earth green just unfavorable and problematic: low tinting strength, dull and sometimes hard to rewet(I mean both versions of terre vert from winsor and newton).

Qor shows their color as looking more like an original Hookers green and I wish the tube colors on the outside were a little closer to what is inside therefore I appreciate seeing what basically the pigment looks like. I thought what kind of PG 23 was this until I realized that it is just the same PG23. Still very lovely. DS should have named it the original Hooker’s green because DS’s Hooker’s green is way too obnoxious for the name. Holbein has a lovely green wow nicer and more transparent than a chromium green but along the same hue, very earthy and lovely, but not terre verte. Thank you, such a treat to see these confusing terre verte pigments. 😊
