Awesome! I love that we get to look inside. Thanks so much for your work in both testing as well as editing this video.
Great review.Hope the channel grows quick so you can get more equipment without having to buy. Thanks for your work.
Hello! I generally don't care about bookshelf speakers but I never saw your channel before so I watched. I like what I'm seeing so far. 👍
These things play way above their pay grade. Give them enough power and a good tube preamp and you will be pleasantly surprised. I went from a 25-watt per channel A/B amp to a 200 watt class D amp with tube preamp. The Elacs woke up and sounded like different speakers. Much deeper bass, to 30 HZ. Cleaner mid-range. Crystal clear highs. A great speaker. Thanks for the video.
Mine are driven by a couple of Guntars Smits "perfect amp". Story of the perfect amp. th-cam.com/video/xhqybovCNjw/w-d-xo.html
His case is designed (incorporating a Texas Instruments INA 1650 pre-amp) to drop in an ICEpower 125ASX2. Once connected it's in bridged mode for a 450 watt monoblock.
@@tweedeldee8122 That ought to wake up any speaker (that can be woken up)...
@@peterbaugh51 lol. Let's hope so. I'm also using a little SMSL M200 for preamp/DAC.
I bought a Hypex NC122MP 75W power amp but it has a coarse dry sound and doesn't sound better than my cheaper 45W A/B Onkyo A-9010. Bass is about the same but timbre is more real. I have tested them with two different hybrid tube amps and boy they rose from the dead. Amazing bass control. Class D I'm sceptic with this beautiful midrange sounding speaker.
@@wyup the Texas Instruments class D chip, TPA 325x series are very musical. Neutral and not harsh. Not true of some class D amps.
I have a pair of these and the matching center channel in my home theater system. I picked them up when they first started shipping. I am really happy with them. I was lucky to purchase them before the price increased
Thanks for your breakdown/ explanation of the DBR62's. I've had mine for about 3 years and "still" enjoy them & have no urge to replace them. The biggest compliment I can give them is they've caused me to "not" really miss the previous $4,500 monitors I had (maybe this is due to my room acoustics or that my hearing is going?!?)
Your ears are not deceiving you. I have them too. Still can't believe the imaging and sound I'm getting out of these two speakers. Bye bye 5.1 stereo. No need.
Thanks for the review. Always interesting to see the components and build quality of speakers. Please keep the speaker and sub breakdown videos coming and rock on!
Very thorough review. Well done!
Wow! Thank you for the nice comment! Comments like this keep me doing it.
Grand merci
Awesome video ! Love to see how these speakers look like on the inside. Very nice channel with very cool content 😊
Thank you!
Surprising GREAT build quality at that price.
Impressive build quality in this price range. Nice job covering the details of what's inside these. Hoping the SQ follows suit!
Bonjour de la France, superbe vidéo comm toujours. Merci
Thank you!
Great review content and style! Unique as far as i know on TH-cam
Thank you!
When Elac opened their Canadian distribution centres, they had an on-line contest
and I won second place which was a pair of these at $300.00 CDN (all in). I didn't really
use them much until recently. I purchased a Schiit Ragnarok, bought some good stands
for the Elacs and let everything warm up for about a couple of months. I gotta say,
"wow - what an amazing little speaker". I listen to some very we'll recorded material
including movie sound tracks... best system I have ever owned (and I have had many
since the early 1970s).
Now, having had a look and the construction and internal components, I understand
now just how much quality is built into these gems. I currently use a Schiit Modius DAC
but I am definitely upgrading to the Halo Cyan 2. As far as Dacs go - the Cyan 2 just
might be the source I need to bring the midrange up to where I want it.
Many thanks - it was fun to watch and be so pleasantly surprised.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the DBR62. Happy listening!
I bought this year the UBR62 at 450 euros new but on white ☹️ and they sound and look fantastic. Maybe not in white with walnut furniture.
These DBR62 are just 400.
They have been on the market for a few years but they pack a punch on sound and quality.
Elac is a great brand
Wise choice not only are they Andrew Jones design but they sound as good as Buchardt speakers
Better in my opinion.
Great video I wonder what u think about ubr62 , but I must admit that a great breakdown of the Dbr 62 . Regards mark
Nice parts, nothing wrong with the tweeter or Xover for so little money. The bass driver is stunning for the money. Really the only thing I don’t like are the driver screws directly into MDF but that is common far higher up too. Thanks for the review!
Would some rubber grommets/washers or gaskets help?
The venting on the pole piece and under the spider is helping the driver play with greater linearity; as well as cooling. Trapped air acts as a spring, and this affects the motion of the cone i.e. distortion.
When you measured the T/S parameters, was the driver broken in? Things change quite a bit during break in - suspension becomes more compliant etc.
All air core coils - is quite notable!
Hi Neil. Yes, these speakers are broken in. Before I purchased them they were demos at my local dealer so they have plenty of hours on them. Yeah, I was impressed by the air core inductors they were using -- higher AWG than I typically see at this price point.
@@generationbehindhifi These probably would benefit from adding a rib across the inside - or a strut brace from the thin web of the front baffle between the drivers to the existing brace. Other than that, the cabinet seems solid.
@@NeilBlanchard The cabinet is very nice for this price point and for the most part is very quiet. I did find a small cabinet resonance taking place around 600Hz, but besides that I thought it did quite well.
The DBR62 are now my new favorite bookshelf speakers for this price point. I even like them a bit better than my KEF Q350s.
I'm getting questions about what class D amp might sound good with these speakers. Here's a tube tip:
Douk ST-01 Pro TUBE tip: If your amp came with Chinese 6K4 tubes (has a red star printed on the glass), mine caused distortion. I upgraded to much better sound for $17 with GE JAN 5654W matched pair tubes. 6K4 tubes can be replaced by 6J1, 6J2, 6J3, 6J4, 6J5, 6"1N, 64N, 65N, 5654/5654W, 5725, 6AK5, EF95, 6BA6, 403B, etc. Your tubes may be ok. This type of tube hybrid amp drives my elac speakers very well. But I would avoid Chinese tubes.
I’ve got them for 350€ pair (new), a b&w asw610 300€ (used) and a Wiim amp 350€ (new). With exactly 1000€ I’ve got something that measure pretty flat, dig deeply enough (at least for music that’s what I use it for), room correction, subwoofer integration and a streamer built it. I think that at this price you can’t get anything better
where did you get them new for 350
Your spin-up is interesting. 👍
Thanks for this detailed review. În a future one, can you show us also how you make the audio measurements?
No problem. I use a Dayton Audio DATs V3 tool (link in the description) to get this data. Its a great tool that is easy to use and understand.
Didn’t know diy Dan has audio channel
haha! I posted about it on my channel last year. :)
🤔when is your review of the DBR 62 coming out ??
I'm just putting the finishing touches on that video as we speak. I have the look inside video on the JBL Stage 250B coming out on 10-1-24 and then the review of the DBR62 will be released a few weeks after. :)
@@generationbehindhifi ok
@@generationbehindhifi please surprise us with a new crossover and comparison test 🤓I want to have a reason to upgrade mine

Is it worth or possible to upgrade the electrolytic capacitors of the woofer circuit with polyester ones?
With values like 47 and 220 µF, good luck finding any! Film caps are not typically practical in size beyond the low µF range.
Use a audio note Kaisei electrolytic to keep it small... These are incredible and better than most budget film caps I've tried. The only electrolytic cap I'd ever use.
Ola, belo video, muito informativo, gostei, onde esta o link do video do andrew jones ?
Link is in the description.
@@generationbehindhifi thanks
It’s not an underhung voice coil design. It’s overhung
Doh! You're absolutely right. I made a correction in the description. Sorry about that.
I doubt replacing the ferromagnetic nuts with non magnetic brass ones will make any significant difference in that design. It will just make you feel better. 😆
As you suggested, they did the best they could at this price point. Thanks for the review.
I might buy a pair of these myself. They are a good buy, especially on sale. 😉
Danny from GR Research wouldn't agree, he'd add his magical tube connectors and no res and charge you 1k and say the speakers are 5x better 😂
It is just a myth that magnetic connectors have any effect on the sound. It is just snake oil merchandising. By the way, if he have checked all the capacitors and the upper-right (non inductive) power resistors, they have obligatory ferrous leads or else they cannot carry high currents.
So what you are saying is you have no experience with the issue but want to pretend you're really smart.
@@crazyprayingmantis5596 Gosh you are clever, you dissed a brilliant speaker designer with your utter lack of knowledge and phony made up bullshit numbers. Well played.
@@bayard1332 No, what he is saying is he knows from experience that all those things all added together only make a small difference and it's not necessarily worth all the added cost; and btw,
I could tell you without reservation that if you can actually notice a difference by changing the nuts on the binding posts then your head needs to be examined. In fact, a blind test would reveal your psyched out technology bias.
You should buy/test this, if you are interested let me know

Never had ELAC speakers, I have the Monitor audio Silver 100 and they are awesome speakers , I can say the build quality of the monitor audio cabinet and the drivers seems better.
You mean the quality of the cosmetics? Fancy looks do not help the sound. But if you like paying thousands of dollars just for looks that's perfectly okay.
@@peterbaugh51 The materials not the cosmetics. But if the cosmetics are better as well , it is a plus.
@@RanTausi Achieving a balance is a good thing 😊
Very nice look at these Elacs. I wish there was a way you could compare these with the new Elac debut 3.0 They come in at a cheaper price point, but several TH-camrs say they sound great at less than $500 a pair. 👍😎 I just subscribed so look forward to your videos. 😁
They may not be quite as good but would be excellent for home theater setup. Easy on the amplifier. And wallet.
Hi, decent looking speakers with decent xover but being me I would definitely upgrade the xover 🤭🤫. I’ve seen 👀 $10k speakers with cheap ass xover 🤦🏻♂️ they should be shame themselves. By the way great vid and new subscriber 👽✌🏼
@@Hi-Fi369 Thanks! IMO for 700 a pair, they have one of the nicer crossovers in this price category! These speakers aren’t perfect, but at 700 a pair they offer tremendous value for money and tick all the right boxes.
Kef are cast I literally own 6
"The Q350 has a similar, 6.5" Uni-Q array with an aluminum midrange-bass cone, a 1" aluminum dome tweeter, and a stamped-steel basket, in a 14.5-liter, 16.75-lb, generic-looking MDF box.
According to Dipin Sehdev of KEF America, the stamped basket "is equal in rigidity to the cast one" because "We designed the chassis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to increase its strength."
www.stereophile.com/content/kef-q350-loudspeaker
That is NOT a good crossover. Crossover design & parts are #1. How can you say it's any good without even proper measurements? Even if it's designed well, the parts are very cheese... Electrolytic caps on the bass driver, cheapest possible trash resistors, and a very meh cap on the tweeter. It seems at least some are air core inductors , but of the dental floss gauge.
Good drivers with poor designed and/OR cheap parts won't preform well. Cheap drivers with a well engineered crossover AND high quality parts WILL far out perform the other. This is a well known fact.
Cheap crossover and a really lame tweeter. I bypassed my tweeter cap with a .01uf mylar. It helped, but cannot compensate for such a weak tweeter.
@@scottlowell493 wow! Tough crowd! What don’t you like about the tweeter? I absolutely love my speakers and can’t even build a set on my own that would be better for less. A set of quality mid range drivers like the ones used in the DBR62 would set me back almost 300 on their own! I honestly can't think of a better bookshelf for the money! Can you? If so, I’ll buy it and do a tear down on them.
@@generationbehindhifi install a better tweeter. Even a $30 vifa/tymphany or Dayton is better. Better extension and linear power.
Upgrade the caps to 5% metal poly and the inductor to air core. Build your own crossover without such severe compromises to meet a price point.
The NHT c3 are more neutral and even. Polk reserve are better in every way. So are A/D/S ll-710.
I can replicate the sound of an Elac dbr62 by buying a set of wharfdale diamonds and putting duct tape over the tweeter.
The scan speak discovery is a far better midrange and isn’t that expensive . Same for sb acoustics.
There you go.
@@scottlowell493 Inductors are already air core. This speaker is known to be more refined than Wharfedale Diamonds. How do you fit poly caps of 220uF? Any other tweeter you place needs complete XO redesign, and they don't have the DBR62's waveguide.
@@scottlowell493 Are you sure the NHT c3 are "more neutral and even" because the Kipple measurements I have seen say otherwise.
@@generationbehindhifi either doesn't know what he's talking about he's deaf or third option he's blowing smoke up your arse
Oh and ar speakers quarter price or third and their seriously damn near the same
AR speakers? Acoustic Research?
Lmfao what is wrong with you home theater guys? All I'm gonna say is it's hard not to be a complete dick but um lol I've got a pair of 3way 6.5 components that spec out better and are built same if not a bit better especially in the crossover unit........their 100 bucks a set so I'm pretty sure we all could find an enclosure for 600 or less lmao
HT and HiFi are not the same hobby dummy
