    I'm running a pair of these in my basement 25' x 10' workshop. I work from home in there 8 hrs a day and these speakers never get fatiguing. I have them on stands which put the tweeters about 37" off the ground. I am standing up and moving about the shop about 80% of the day. They always sound great no matter where I am in the room. I'm powering them with a vintage Realistic receiver that puts out 45 WPC. This is enough power for background music and will even rock pretty loud if I want. But I would recommend more power if you are going to be critically listening at higher volumes.
    I briefly tried these for critical listening in my largish living room with 150WPC McIntosh amp and did end up eqing the treble down a few db with a high shelf filter to tame some very slight brightness. I also noticed that slight lack of presence compared to my reference speakers (Tekton Double Impacts). But overall they sounded amazing considering their small size and affordable price. It wasn't really an apples to apples comparison, trying to compare them with the Tektons which are much larger and more efficient speakers that are capable of serious volume. But overall they performed quite well for critical listening.
    They are absolutely perfect in my workshop and I have zero plans to ever change them out for anything else. I would highly recommend these speakers.

    Great video Erin, thank you. I have owned a pair of DBR62's for about the last year and I love them. I had them hooked to an Emotiva TA1 with an ELAC subwoofer (the one you tested and liked) and they sounded really nice.
    It wasn't until I put my vintage Bryston 3B amplifier (100 wpc+) in the signal chain that they really came alive! Now, I love them! LOL!
    BTW, I have the treble at -2 to take some of the grit out of the high end. I noted, in your data graphs, what it was that I was hearing.
    Thank you again Erin.

      Did you hear that grit with the Bryston? I also notice some sharpness in the highs that bugs me. Playing with peek eq but haven't nailed it.
      Just using Fosi Audio v3 class d amp. Wondered if another amp would fix it.
      I also wonder if removing the tweeter grill will help. It isn't easy to do so I haven't tried yet.

    I own the KLH Model 5 and the DBR62. The Elac is an amazing, well engineered, and easy to listen to speaker with broad sound stage. I drive them with NAD 50 watts a side and it's a great combination. I use an SVS SB2000 sub and the combination is just wonderful.

      You can’t just drop a bomb saying you have the KLH 5’s and then not comment on it..(in other words, your additional input places the Elac speaker in
      its proper perspective.
      Just bc the 5’s are three or four times as expensive, doesn’t mean a comparison won’t be useful info).

      @ErinsAudioCorner honesty I've learned so much from your channel. My hobby is speaker building so your channel has been invaluable. E.g. in this review you mention the dip around 4k, then the in room estimate actually showing the speaker may be a bit forward in that region. That is a very subtle and popentially counter intuitive point bc it would be easy to think of the dip causing the opposite listening experience. Hope I've made myself clear. Awesome work dude. Cheers from the UK.

Paired with a Wiim Amp and a Q acoustics 3060s sub. Wall mounted and tilted down in a 13ft x 20ft room! The Wiim Amp has exceeded my expectations in making these speakers shine! Good review!!!! I've found that the ELAC DBR62 is virtually (90% +/ -) as good and provides the same "musical enjoyment" as my previous $4K Monitors from a well-known English MFG. - maybe this is because of my room/ room acoustics? Anyway, each time I listen to them I always enjoy them, glad I got them. Sounded thin, anemic, and felt cheaply constructed. Sent them back. Got the dbr62. Finally, a good sounding speaker. I finally got a pair of these about 2 months ago [Black Friday sale]. Been wanting to get a pair after seeing a lot of good reviews. I purchased these to replace the Debut B6.2 I've had for over 2 years for my Tube Amp/Turntable set up. I did a comparison of the speakers and the DBR62's are definitely an upgrade over the B6.2's. Took the time to replace the fiber sheets and install damping foam into the cabinets, seems to help with bass response.

    Another great evaluation video Erin, but I can’t help but think how you missed the opportunity to comment on comparisons to other Elac bookshelf speakers that you may be familiar with, such as 5.2, 6.2, or even 41’s. At the very least it would’ve been nice to know what other speakers are in a similar price range as the dBR 62s and why they fall short relative to, or actually, why they may be preferred by some relative to the dBR 62’s.

    I have a 3 channel DB62 setup and it's a nobrainer part. The Harman influence comes through here. It's a good foundation. There's very little reason to spend more in a "normal" room. If the DBR62 is a better version of the same then right on but fix your room before you go bigger. The impedance/sensitivity on the DBR is close to unacceptable. You have to add $1k+ to this purchase for Crown, ATI, or Bryston.

    • @wyup
      @wyup ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have found you need a beefy amplifier to get body and control with the DBR62. I have run them with a 45w Onkyo A-9010: okay, but needs more body in the lower midrange. A 70w class D Hypex NC122MP: more body and balance. A hybrid 50w tube amp: now we're talking: amazing bass punch and body. Equivalent impedance dips down to 2.4 ohms, which is a tough load. We have also noticed a bump in the upper midrange with some amp that may bring some presence. I think it has a bit recessed top-end, maybe that's why I believe some people deem this speaker boring, which absolutely is not, because you get a great bass and midrange when properly amplified. I love this speaker.

  • @TheDenix8
    @TheDenix8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That low impedance seems is really a big problem :| If you don't have a very expensive amp it must be much less dynamic (since I read around people say this about this speaker - not enough dynamic), and many AVRs don't offer pre-outs if you don't buy expensive ones (and then on top of that you need an expensive amp). Suddenly the speaker is not so affordable anymore. I wonder if that's the reason some people say it's bad at low volumes. But it sure looks beautiful and has nice wide soundstage (according to the data)! I hope you'll review its "counterpart" the Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52 someday

      @@scottbennett3119 That's quite a comparative list. I could add that I like it better than the MA Silver 100s I tried. Both have Al woofers but the 100s were too much in your face and threw everything at you all at once. Upper mids and highs could get jumbled too. The 15i is subdued enough to be both exciting and still smooth with good separation. I have Triangle Zetas (which I preferred over the Borea 2) and while both are different, I like both. The Zetas are really musical, less dense sounding than the 15i but still more sibilant, but I an getting used to the sound of the 15i with music. A solid design, technically proficient ... good price.
    Everything you want.
    That's what contracting w/AJ for design work represents; an ideal arrangement of tradeoffs at any given price range.
    This iteration, the aesthetic was killer.
    In achieving his performance targets, ... physics and all, he payed in the load characteristics.
    It benefits from as much current possible.
    Above all else, a killer offering.

    My Elac DBR62 Reference speakers after two years breaking in, play down to 30 htz, filling the room with bass that you can feel sitting on the couch, 8' from the speakers. I can feel the bass at 28 htz. The amp is class D with tube preamp, Douk ST-01 Pro. No sub on my system. My setup is not standard, so other rooms may yield other results. Dimensions may help explain why my setup sounds so good. Room is 13' deep, 12' wide. Speaker placement; Left, 50" from back wall, 20" from left wall. Right; 16" from back wall, 28" from right wall. Both speakers tilted up 5 degrees, cross streamed 10 degrees toed in, on speaker stands ear level. A 7' couch is parallel to speakers and TV. Sources are; IBM PC, I5 Chip, DVD, CD, Smartphones on WLAN, and Sony Bravia Smart Inet TV, copper connections. Being older I only hear to about 15khz, but still know what a real cymbal sounds like. Elacs sound real to me. Power with some tubes helps all speakers sound better to me. Elac Reference likes some power. They sound great to me, better than my B&W's at 5x the cost. Pretty=pricy, not better. Walnut Elacs look great to me. Thank you Andrew Jones, and thanks for this honest review.

      A note about volume; if you like really loud volume in a big room, you probably need bigger speakers. I get great sound, but at these levels; Volume and Decibel levels in my room at 3 meters;
      Mixer range is 0 to 100.
      DB AVerage, DB PeaK;
      ---------------------------
      vol 25 mixer = 66 av, 73 pk db
      vol 30 mixer = 72 av, 79 pk db
      vol 35 mixer = 76 av, 86 pk db
      (Amp is set to 90% Volume).
      Trying to save hearing...

    Affiliate links are fine, it's not like it costs the buyer a cent. It's the seller (the store) that gets a little less, which gets kicked back to the person with the link that steered people to them in the first place. I'd say it's win win for everybody. Great review. Except now I'm thinking of spending on these speakers. 😬

    funny thing I found: I have had these speakers for several years, and always enjoyed them until I "did the right thing" and got some real speaker stands. This elevated the height of the tweeter by about 3 inches and holy crap they were way too harsh on the high end. I had also acquired a new amp around that time and I blamed the amp initially (sent it back, even). But something still seemed out of whack. So using my old amp I ran some tests with a really basic app, and it was returning results that were so much worse than the last time I tested. I couldn't figure it out, as they were placed and toed in *exactly* the same as the last time I tested, except for the height (which I was still forgetting). Some of the measurements dropped from an "A" to a "C"!
    I got so frustrated that I just put them back on the same side tables I had them on before I got the stands and bingo - back to a really lovely soundstage with clear but not harsh higher frequencies. Retested and got the original "A-" overall results I had before. Color me amazed that this small change in height (also the material of the "stand" must be in play) made such a difference.

    I have a couple questions.
    I am totally blind and can not read the data.
    I hear some ringing or tizzyness around 6 to 7 khz. Would removing the grill help? Can you suggest a peek filter setting to help? Please. Trying to fix it by ear but can't nail it.
    I can't tell if it is the speaker, the amplifier, and or the room. Only have a Fosi Audio V3 amp now. Different dacs didn't help.
    Also. What is the bass extension frequency? Not using a sub and don't want to boost what they can't produce well. I hear about f3 and f10 bass response. What is that?
    I'm mostly tuning by ear with Equalizer APO and Peter's Equalizer (Peace). Can't use most measurement tools as they are graphical and I can't operate them without being able to see the screen.
    Guess that was 3 questions.
    Thanks for your reviews.

    Erain, how did you get 3% threshold distortion level, why such high level? This means amplifier wirh 1% THD would sound quite good.

    • @tylerhackman6832
      @tylerhackman6832 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it would. Thd doesn’t correlate to clean sound in reality. Plenty of highly regarded tube amps have a ton of thd.

    • @ErinsAudioCorner
      @ErinsAudioCorner  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Amplifier distortion doesn’t sound the same as speaker distortion. There can be differing factors.
      3% is sort of the “alright, this is where I’m gonna say “warning zone””. But even that is not set in stone because music/source material and frequency can effect audibility. There is no hard line for it. And frankly, I don’t pay much more attention to it than a common sense check to see when the low end of a woofer is going nuts or a tweeter is crossed too low.

    Hey Erin, I have KLH Kendall floor standers rated to 250 watts 8 ohms and reported 96db sensitivity. I listen at 9’ in a 14’ x 18’ room. Should my integrated amp be at least 50 watts? Was considering Yamaha A-S701 or refurbished Marantz PM8006 / Music Fidelity M3Si / Arcam SA20. Thx

    • @ErinsAudioCorner

      I’d try to verify that sensitivity. If I’m being honest, based on my experience, I’m sure it’s a BS number. That or it has no bass. But maybe it’s not.

      @@goatree_saluberrimae honestly, having a bass port at the back or the front dont really make much difference drom my experience.
