What COLORS Do Bass Actually SEE? (Surprising!)

  • Ask any angler and they'll tell you that what color a bait is can be one of the most important choices when determining a bait to use while out bass fishing. There is no shortage of colors to choose from and they range from all colors of the rainbow and beyond. But what colors do bass actually see? I dove down this rabbit hole several years ago and the result was surprising. In this video I discuss what the science has to say about the subject and offer some bass tips along the way. #Fishing #BudgetBaits #BassFishing #BassBuggy

Do you think its important to consider all colors for baits or do you prefer to keep it simple?

Carrying fewer colors will make it easier to hike miles and climb steep hills to reach bass waters at New Melones.

I'll never forget I was throwing a chartreuse spinnerbait one time in some dirty water. I let the rod tip dip down while I was messing with something. I looked over the side of the boat and the bait appeared white. I pulled it up shallower and it was chartreuse. Crazy. I will never forget that day.

It's things like that which me lead to believe either our eyes are easy to trick (they are), or that we don't perceive color the way we think we do. I find it very interesting.

Yes ive seen this study recently too. I have thrown a crankbait didnt get any bites then changed it to the same crankbait but a different color and caught fish. Thats why in my crankbaits i just buy and use a few different colors mostly fire red, shad and bluegill.

Fish see colors a lot differently than we often think they do. Usually, just a few colors will do just fine.

As long as there’s something moving up top then a bass is going to strike no matter the colors! Thank for sharing!💪🏽🔥🎣👍🏽

It's called a reaction strike for a reason. I don't think when a bass is striking at something it cares too much about the color. I've caught fish on all sorts of crazy colors...in gin clear waters!

Great piece of opinion knowledge here. I have a white googan clickbait with a Gary Yamamoto trailer in blue that kills it and I have the same thing in bluegill clickbait and same trailer and it has caught me nothing. Which makes me think they see it in white and black like you say. Makes a lot of sense to me now. But always throw what you're confident in first 🤷🏽‍♂️🤘🏽

I've wondered if we might actually work different colors differently without noticing it. That could be a part of it as well.

Interesting. Something I noticed was that the 2019 research was done in very clean, filtered water. Presumably, reds will disappear quickly as depth increases, so i would think that using red would only be a factor when fishing in fairly shallow water. I have always thought in terms of outline, movement and shades of gray when it came to lures (I use mainly soft plastics), so I do abide by the "dark water, darker colors" conventional wisdom - I think that darker shade helps to make the lure appear more clearly to a bass. I do tend to favor colors with some glitter / flash in them: I don't think color of the glitter hugely matters, but I think some flash certainly could help a bait's attraction - even to a fish that only sees red and green. Thanks!

I have always heard that you need to “match the hatch.” In other words, throw lures that look like the forage that the bass naturally eat every day.

    • @LowBrowFishing
      @LowBrowFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We've all been told that for years. But then we're also told "throw dark colors when the water is stained" or "throw red in the pre-spawn". And we're told " throw natural colors in clear water." But does any of it really matter, or is it just a ploy to get you to buy more baits? I'll be examining that subject soon.

But light is not the same as pigment. The 7 light colors of our visible spectrum that we see all combine to make white light. But if you took those same 7 colors of paint and mixed them together, you would not get white paint. That is the difference between light and pigment. You need to shine a combined red and green light source onto different lures to demonstrate what they look like to a bass.

Been fishing for 65 years and not 1 fish has told me what they see... I've changed colors countless times, sometimes made a difference and sometimes didn't matter what color or what lure didn't catch anything. Since the fish change their color variations according to water clarity, I'll stay on the old school wagon, it's worked for years. One thing for sure with all technological advances we sure have found ourselves in some strange circumstances... worldwide. Seems the more technologically advanced we get the dumber everything gets.

Only one think in bright day use light color in mudy and dark water the same color but much darker. Tested and is the true 1000%

You are also using human anatomy as an analog for bass anatomy, and that might not be the best example. Our rods and cones, while similar in form and function, may differ significantly from that of a bass.
I am only the messenger here. I had nothing to do with the studies in any way. However, based on my own experience and what personal research I am doing now, I am finding that colors only play a limited roll in how bass relate to a bait - especially a reaction bait they might not even get a good look at.
Again, fish what you have confidence in. But you have to assume that as time rolls on new discoveries will be made and what we thought we knew so solidly will prove to be nothing but absolute bunk.

@@LowBrowFishing I don’t disagree. The way water filters the spectrum is yet another factor. As a retired cross-disciplinary engineer, I wish I could get out enough to do A/B comparisons.

@@LowBrowFishing I found the study online and read it. Your conclusions hold up for deep water and, for the most part, shallow water. At the minimum, we can greatly reduce the number of bait colors we pack around with us.
Bass see red and green, and can barely distinguish chartreuse from white. Blue is perceived as dark green or dark gray.
Since “craw” is popular among bass fishermen, I thought orange’s absence from the study was a deficiency.
I was surprised to see that the spectrums for red and green cones are pretty broad, whereas the spectrum for rods is narrow and centered on blue-green.
I thought the study should have included orange, since “craw” is a popular color among humans.

In almost 50 years of bass fishing I've never hurt one yet. The trick is to not squeeze hard and if the hook doesn't come out easy, turn the bass around in your hand and use the pliers.
