I do agree to an extent. Generally i swap lures or colors after 10 minutes of not getting bit just to figure out what they want and can see that day. One day they lit me up on black and blue. One day i went 2 hours with no bites until my ol lady used a pink and white paddle tail on a ned rig and that was all they would hit that day. And i never would have figured that out if she didnt buy that. Right now (south central louisiana) all they want is bright. Chartreuse. That damn pink paddle tale. And red. To be fair running red here makes sense because we have so many crawfish but still. Color is very area and water dependant as well as weather. The water here only has about 3 to 5 inches of visibility at the most. And ranges from green to brown so sometimes we need those bright colors that arnt overfished just to get them on

Nice video. I really liked and agreed with your 90/10 principal and also how you said that 10 doesn’t matter too much because it’s hard to dial in. Couple of my observations- I fish mostly green tint water that is 0-3 foot visibility: I like natural colors but with some contrast or something to make it stand out from the bottom and water color. For example I was throwing watermelon tube in a river and it like disappeared against the bottom. Then I put on green pumpkin and it blended but was easier to see, and got bit more. Then in a really fast section of the river, in the rapid, a brown one stood out more as it tumbled through the current. Another example- will choose a green pumpkin purple flake over straight GP every day. Also I like your 4 colors principal but something about the color purple or junebug, especially in worms big and small, could just be my confidence…. Finally, certain high pressure areas I think having having an unusual color can be helpful. Like a hot pink or a chartreuse or a straight black or brown. Doesn’t always work but it can be something to try, just like a red rattletrap. I haven’t completely figured hard baits out yet, except I have high confident in the perch colors and pattern in crankbaits, jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits.
Fishing with a friend on a cloudy day and he started hitting on white. So I found a few white plastics but I quickly got bit off by a muskie/pike. So all I had left was pink, which my friend made fun of, and started hammering the fish. He couldn't catch a fish when I threw the pink. He didn't make fun any more.
This is a year late but supports your theory. Smallmouth fishing on Erie, 18'-20' off point Pelee. Bouncing tubes on 6# test, 5/16 oz. . GP with red fleck out produced GP with gold fleck 3 or 4 to one. Opened my eyes to the possibility.
Bass are colorblind. They have the condition called Tritanopia. They cannot see colors in the blue and violet scale. Also, they cannot differentiate between white and chartreuse, or silver and gold to bass black and blue and Junebug are the exact same color knowing this will save you a lot of money a spinner bait and a chartreuse spinner bait are the exact same color to a bass.
What I'm seeing is people using their high dollar electronics to snag fish in the shallows. They will sit right there and dangle a large hook in front of the fish and then snag them. Reminds me of kids catching fish out of an aquarium. It should be considered cheating in tournaments.
One thing I’ve learned from World’s Worst Fishing is that all 4 of those white senkos are most likely the same exact white color, but flake colors can really seem to change the color of the plastic
I believe color does matter based on the factors that you mentioned… But in choosing color, I basically stay with Green Pumpkin, Blue/Black, Watermelon and some white for Shad baits… Of Course, I learned the hard way in fishing club tournaments for years and years; easy to amass hundreds and hundreds of bags of different color baits only to go back to the basic colors I mentioned earlier.
The 4 colors I use are the same as you with one exception, I swap white with "fire tiger." If I could only use one color for all conditions and water color it would be fire tiger.

Yes I agree with you I’ve been pouring my own soft plastics for 5 years now so I have all the colors but the 40years experience on the water helps know when to change colors and sometimes not… just be open minded to the conditions experiment and have more than 3 or 4 colors in your boat also I think yellow is the most over looked color in fishing🤫
You are correct, the deeper you go in the water column, the darker things get and less color matters. Then it just becomes contrasts and the silhouette of the bait. That's why darker colors or drastic pattern differences are more effective.
For soft plastics, watermelon, green pumpkin, black, and Shad colors which I’d break down into 2 colors depending on water clarity. Junebug I’d toss in there also if I lived in Florida. Bill Dance only believed in blue plastics years ago.

White is right in low visibility at night while driving what color vehicle stands out white or black white. On a bright sunny day while driving what color vehicle Stands out more white same when fishing with one exception at full moon topwater fishing black.
I still say that when the bite is on, color doesn't seen to matter. Even what lure you throw doesn't matter, up to a point, when the bite is on as long as you're not throwing top water when the fish are on bottom lures (and won't come up) I don't throw just white when the bass are on shad. I want my lure to stand out and many times I start out with Chartreuse Pro Blue. If I throw a small swimbait, I'll throw it on an underspin. If I throw a crankbait, I'm going to throw something with some brighter color and / or some flash to stand out until the fish tell me they want something else. When the bite is tough, the color, lure size, lure profile, and color 100% matter. Then you have days where it is somewhere in between all of that. Let me say the the lake I fish most has off color water all the time and visibility is at it's best right now, about two or two and a half feet. After reading what I typed, it seems I agree with you on this.
So, as a bank and occasional recreational (sit in) kayak angler, where tackle box space is always at a premium, would you say there's a strong argument for always packing the variants over the solids? Not solid white but white/silver flake? Not black but black/blue?
Fishing = sometimes nothing about your lure types and colors mean anything, sometimes they mean everything. Sometimes they’re the difference between 0 fish and 2 fish, sometimes they’re the difference between 10 fish and 25 fish. Most importantly, sometimes they’re the difference between big fish and small fish

I think in hard baits it's more a natural bait fish color (whatever baitfish is in your water) over anything else. A variation of bluegill is always a great one. Maybe a little lighter at times and darker at others but there is always that bright chartrues too. So three colors of hard baits is about all I'll throw. I've only been skunked once in a couple years lol I usually catch at least one bass and usually many each trip. I only get crazy or fun looking colors to play around with lol I always have my staple colors with me. Natural green pumpkin, watermelon) bright (white or chartreuse) or a darker (bluegill, maybe purplish, and black variation) that's pretty much all you need in any baits. Hard bait color matters too just depends on the bait. Cranks I like natural baitfish colors for my area, same for jigs, topwater I do a little of bright and dark. Spinner baits my dark is some kind of bluegill pattern and bright is chartrues white. I was taught all my techniques by a pro angler so have always stick to them.
A blue back chartreuse belly Crankbait is one of the best colored crankbaits too throw that’s a standard in my box I have 10 of those to 1 of every other color if I’m throwing a Crankbait it’s the first one I throw every time now I’m really liking a jabberjaw old Gregg blue and black brown back why is blue so good bluegill so when you say color matters I don’t really think so confidence matters that’s what people need to understand your going to fish a bait way better that you feel better about
Yea I concur with the gold flake flashing idea. I always use baits with lots of glitter in them in light and dark contrasts and certainly the gold flake works flawlessly.
You know my dad could catch anything. He taught me the basics, except ehat colors to use. Or how to tie a line. He always did it for me. Now I am you tubing this. MEN make your daughter's to tie their own lines and how to pick baits. My dad is gone, so I am having to figure it out on my own.
I always say color kind of matters but best color choices for a fisherman are the 3 norms you mention and something in whatever bait fish you have, like if its gold shiner a gold flake helps, shiner silver or blue gill maybe a mix of gold blue or purple flake. As far as dark to light I think that's backwards about dark cloudy days and sunny days. When a fish looks up into the sun he has no eyelids or sunglasses lol so a bright color is missed alot and the darker colors work better on darker days the lighter color works. Even you said in missy water a bright or chartreuse crank bait works better see where I'm going muddy water is darker just like a cloudy day. Some say use black blue on a dirty water day. I've used both actually and some days dark catches better than light but in my experience the light colors have worked best. I use dark topwater on sunny days and have killed it somedays even broke my pb this summer with a black buzzbait on a super sunny day. And caught some reel nice ones same week on a cloudy day on a chartrues white buzzbait. I think color matters just it's different in my area than what some say.
Hummm, It's always bothered me that a proven fact is that Bass ALWAYS have better visibility of a dark colored bait against a light background and a light colored bait against a dark background and yet when we thread our two toned plastics we always do the REVERSE of what is BEST in regards their visibility??? Nature/our creator gave bait fish their best protection to AVOID against being mauled in their color scheme and yet, we mimic that very same color scheme when we're trying to catch the prey we seek! Think about it, how does this make any sense???? I got to believe that we'd have more success if we would change this mentality. What could have more appeal to a predator then a distressed upside down bait fish?
Absolutely incorrect. Not all water conditions are equal. Variations are key. Highlights are key when it comes to matching prey based on environment. While this may simplify the "concept" for beginners...it won't help anyone progress.

I have played this out myself many times in West Tn. 80-90% of my big fish 4lb and up are caught on a white shad with black back.
Imake whit senkos with silver flake and pearlized powder. I find it adds flash. Black and blue is my go-to. When that fails I turn to bubblegum.

I only use earthworm/chartuese tail senkos (wacky rig), spoiler shads (crappie), and crawdad bugs for Texas rig and top water (any color)

I do fish them in the spring, but I have great luck with the basic colors then too. Not saying you couldn’t add red if you wanted.

Definitely would not hurt. I really scale down my colors when I hop on my kayak. I use much more in the bass boat.
