Underwater test: Which lure color stands out in stained water?

  • Every angler surveys the water when arriving at a fishing spot and tries to determine which color would be best, but Marsh Man Masson wanted to see if the old adages about appropriate colors for stained water are accurate, so he dropped a GoPro down and jigged an assortment of baits and colors in front of it. Some of the results surprised him!

    I'm a saltwater fisherman on the west coast and recently got into bass fishing and my local lake is dirty as hell. Fished it 5 times with all kinds of colors with no results until I tried black and blue and started slaying large mouth there ever since.

      Exactly. When I've caught fish on lures they seem to be so aggressive/ in such a frenzy they'd eat anything (then again mostly do saltwater fishin' here)

      I still use the same snook/trout/bass lures that I used 40 years ago. No $15-$20 spool tech/live target etc... crap for me. But then again I dont have fishing costumes either like fly shirts,head buffers etc...either. I laugh at them.

    Over here in the Mobile bay, the water is just about always chocolate milk. I like putting scent, like pro cure, on my lure just because the fish can’t see the lure as well as other places.

    fluorescent orange shows up really well in murky water. I did a test like this a couple years ago at a dock in the spring. mounted my underwater camera to the dock and cast lures out, reeling them toward the camera. I was testing some new lures actions, but also their paintjobs as well. a flo orange one was easily visible from the farthest out.

    I always just use a underspin jig with white lure in stained water. The under spin moves water around so they can feel it and it gives noise and also flashes so the fish see it better and the fish seem to always bite like crazy if there are any there.

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. As I mention near the end of the vid, most fish rely on their lateral lines to zero in on prey, but once they get close, I'd prefer to be bouncing something they can see.

      I've talked about how I use popping corks in a number of videos, but haven't really done a classic "tutorial." The Versamaxx Bolt, to me, was a game-changer. Being able to adjust depth in seconds should make everyone a much better cork fisherman.

    Respectfully, you are assuming that fish see and observe in the same color spectrum as we do. Water temp, light, etc. All effect. The comment that lures are designed for those that fish is spot on!

    • @FatJeffStew
      @FatJeffStew 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yea, lots of colors end looking very similar with dichromatic vision.
      I usually base mine on whether the bait will reflect, thus shine (murkier water) or soak up colors thus giving it more camouflage (clear water). Then there's that middle ground of real natural colors that can be used in about all situations.

    • @excelsior1018
      @excelsior1018 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not only that, but water begins to filter out the light spectrum with depth. Your lure's colors change in tone the deeper they go.

    Great information/confirmation. I agree with you general assessment too . But I did have one particular trip where the conventional wisdom went out the door. This was several years ago now; fishing the tressles throwing avocado Dudley's picking up one or 2 here and there. Came across a guy that was asses & elbows every cast. Got close enough to see the color he was throwing. It was Dudley's Purple haze (light violet top, pearl bottom). The water was nasty dirty that day, but for whatever reason, they hit that light color every cast after we switched. I will say, that that incident was the only one I ever had with reverse color scheme.

    this stuff is always so interesting to see and talk about. if we were to apply this all to walleye fishing, the first 3 colors would most likely produce the most on a river day in and day out. same river for smallies the darker lures would be where you would start. crappie could be any color on any given day.

    We have a local pond of about 2 acres . The water is also always a color I call coffee with cream in it. This pond isn't fished often because the color turns people off but there are some huge bass and channel cats. There is a fair amount of redbreast sunfish and bluegills . Every bluegill and redbreast I have caught was almost completely silver without any other color. Even when the redbreast were breeding not much color. Why because silver almost disappears.

      I was thinking the same thing!
      Also i believe they can see higher frequency then we can. If most humans can only see up to 40 hertz they maybe able to see up to 100 or more hertz. How else can they see a vibrating tail under dark dirty water. Or a small fast wasp coming down to land on the water. We must appear to be in slow motion to them lol.

      @First Last I'm sure one of us did Google it because the first thing he thought of when he saw this was what do fish actually see but instead of just randomly making posts guessing about it that person may have actually gone and done some research on it! So I would suggest to mark he may want to use his larger processor and go actually do some research on it to find out that yes they do actually see the same as we do. Although it does of course Very species to species since they're all designed for different things.

      Vance Kaetsu He was mocking me and my lack of proper usage. Not that I care much. It would be nice if we could hit all these grammar police in the face. Not because their right, but because typically mistakes are based on the lack of common usage and improper usage. Words typically being shortened and or abbreviated for texting are not on the grammar police radar. Pretty much shows the ignorance of trying to use TH-cam threads as a means to be a English teacher 👨‍🏫..... trolls with purpose I guess

      It’s like talking to someone and they stop ✋ 🛑 you to point out a word you misused. “Wait, did you say conversate!?? That is not a word!!!??”

    Do fish see the same as we do? A full sapphire blue bait is the best for dark water like that

    The jig-head is what I see best in all cases. They are puter colored. I wonder if what little light hits & reflects off the bait, a solid color may do it better than a plastic w/some transparency that may absorb more light w/less reflection.
    Let me know if this makes cents.

    Does anybody use the midnight mullet matrix shad? I bought a pack and was curious if the color is effective in stained water?

    The content is really good bro if you ever get a chance test out some lipless crankbaits rattle traps or Redeye shad maybe like a dirty water clear water scenario

    white is an amazing dirty water color(one of the absolute best) but those swimbaits have some translucence to them(you can see the screwlock through the bait). A solid white pearl is my favorite for that chocolate milk water.

    Nobody EVER thinks of fish feeling the bait. They have a lateral line that picks up vibration. This is far more important than anyone ever realizes

    I hadn't thought about it that way the darker colors would show better

      The thing is "dark" refers to tone , not color. Thinking in tones and how they contrast with their surroundings makes the most sense.

    Being in Florida with a lot of stained water, I've always heard people swear by dark colored soft plastics... but I've never had more success than when I've been using chartreuse worms. It's always made me feel that silhouette, action, and profile is much more important than color.
