@@ManuelHernandez-ek4nw I think $9000 is overpriced. But if it was taken care of and the oil was changed religiously then it should be okay. If the oil wasn’t changed often I would run away.
I took my 09 f150 5.4l to 315,000 miles before i swapped the engine. Got more than my moneys worth from this truck. I still have nothing wrong with it. Love my truck. Bring the 5.4 back.
Currently have a 2010 5.4 with 265k miles on it. It has lost a bit of power as is to be expected from a work truck. But it’s still running. Maintenance isn’t as good as other Ford’s weve ran in the fleet but it’s been better than all dodges and chevys we’ve had. Planning to slam another 5.4 in it around 300k and rebuild the old one.
I also have a 2010 5.4 with 269k and going strong only problem I recently had about 4 months ago was a cylinder 5 misfire which ended up being a rolling follower come unlodged by the driver side camshaft. My dad and I fixed it and still runs great but has a slight shake at around 50-60mph and shakes a tad when idling but other than that she does great getting me around
I have a 09 lariat with the 5.4. We have had it for about 10 years now.. It has about 268k miles on the original engine and transmission. No major problems so far apart from the ac going out 1 time.
My comment is a little late to the party but one thing that people including the car wizard seem to forget is that in 2009 and 10 the 5.4 three valve Triton engine actually had a second generation of sorts. They made a lot of revisions to the engine as a whole to try to alleviate all of the problems as a stopgap to the 5.0 Coyote engine because the coyote had actually been in development since approximately 2005 and they kept running into hurdles either because they couldn't find the financial means to produce the engine or continue developing it or because the manufacturing processes have not been developed well enough to build the engine. So with that the modifications to the 5.4 included larger galleys more passages for the oil and coolant a slightly larger and higher volume oil pump and more robust timing components. With that being said really you're not going to have too many mechanical issues with the 5.4 of the 2009 and 2010 year. And that's mainly because they had resolved the vast majority of mechanical issues. The head studs breaking is actually just common along all Ford products because they insist on using inferior materials for their manifold bolts but they also don't use large enough bolts or enough of them and this issue is even common on the 3.5, 3.7, and 5.0.
I'm currently looking at a 2010 Platinum 5.4L V8 with 116k miles. Clean title and history. It's going for $16.5k; price seems high. What do you think for the year and mileage?
the price is a bit high. These trucks even with low miles aren't more than 14k for a loaded out one. You can get a Raptor these days for 16-20 with 140-170k on the clock. I bought my truck with around the same miles for 10 back in 2020 and it has every option except navigation but this generation of truck is all plug and play so that was an easy fix.@@ctailx
@@tongtongwang the plugs were changed before I bought it around 100k with Motorcraft platinum. I bought it at about 163k and immediately changed the plugs with Autolite Iridium. So I have almost 40k on those now as I’m at 199k miles
@@tongtongwang I don’t have the part number anymore since that was in 2019/2020 but you can look them up on their website or you local Autozone or O’Reillys. They were the Autolite Iridium XP.
My F350 with the 5.4 Liter engine just turned over 200,000 miles last week. After upgrading the spark plugs and coils and replacing the manifolds twice this engine has been the most reliable engine I have ever owned (I'm 67 years old and have owned many trucks over my lifetime). It dosen't burn a drop of oil. I am building a cabin in the mountains 750 miles from our current home making several trips per year hauling an average of 5,000-7,000 lbs. of lumber, equipment and supplies EVERY trip. The secret (other than regular maintenance) is MARVEL MYSTERY OIL. I have been putting it in the fuel tank (3 oz./fillup) and 1 qt. with every oil change since it went over 100,000 miles. This will prevent cam lobe damage, lifters, timing chain follower wear , fuel pump wear, clean fuel injection nozzles and prevent cold starting damage/wear. And no I'm not getting paid by MMO. I had a mentor in the aviation field. He used it in all of his engines. Whenever he overhauled his engines he always took the heads in to have the valves done. They would ALAWAYS ask him "Bill, what kind of oil are you using"? He couldn't tell them because it's ILLEGAL to use "unapproved" additives (by the FAA). He would just say "30 weight why?" they always would say "Well, because there is no wear at all on your cam lobes and your valves look brand new"
Just so that you know your videos look extremely professional and are very informative. I prefer to watch these reviews instead of doug de muro or other famous youtibers. Keep doing this and you'll make it big!
I bought an 09 f150 fx4 3 years ago, it had 200k on it one owner always dealer maintained. I have 249k now in it I change the oil every 3k miles and do all the minor maintenance. It's been a terrific and reliable truck. Only issue I have is the rust. Im planning on taking care of the rockers and the front bumper. I hate to but a new truck when this one runs so well.
my '08 5.4 has been nothing but perfectly reliable. Sure, not the most powerful motor especially compared to today's motor, but the thing just runs smoothly like butter.
Would you recommend buying one? I need a truck for college because it snows a ton where I'm going. I would take it on long trips and sometimes light off roading and I would be willing to put maintenance into it.
I'm in the same boat with this guy. Would you recommend a truck with one of these motors? I'm also willing to properly maintain the motor to make sure it lasts a while
@Mr Murders okay, thank you for your take! Maintenance definitely goes a long way! I heard oil changes every 3000 miles are also a way to prevent engine failure caused by the cam phasers
Mine currently has 285k original miles. I love this truck. I'm planning on putter a new motor and new trans once the engine goes. About to be 20 years old and smooth as hell with no leaks or problems. Taken me across the country and back more than once. I hear bad things about the 5.4 but I've seen others who had similar experiences as me. Take care of the truck and it will take care of you
Could you share some advice about the proper care of this truck? I am looking to buy one from +08 5.4L, but the community comments about this platform, it’s cause in me some fear. I would appreciate any advice from your part. Thank you, best regards from Juarez, Mexico 🤠
@RicardoAntrax if it's not taken care of I wouldn't get it. If it has high mileage, open up the heads and you'll see a ton of carbon build up. You'll have to use premium gas to avoid more. I'm not sure what gas is available in Mexico. A huge issue is doing a tune up. It can be a pain changing the spark plugs so I'd take it to a shop. If it has high milage be easy on the engine don't run it too hard. Just stay on top of oil and trans fluid. Keep up with it and take care of it and it will take care of you. Don't baby it tho. Its a truck it can handle a lot. Get your use out of it. I only my bought my recent one because the guy before me put a new trans and rear axel in it. I plan on putting a crate motor in it once it dies
@@RicardoAntraxpaisano checa cómo han tratado el motor antes, la clave son los cambios de aceite unos dicen a las 3 mil otros a los 5 mil millas. No joke I've had 2 - 2009 F150s. An FX4 and a Platinum 4x4. Both had 5.4 with the 6spd. I'd recommend a tuner forsure! Also, both got 200k miles out of them easily with like no rust. Only the early triton had the spark plug issues so in 2009 it was worked out. ALSO, CHANGD YOUR OIL EVERY 3K MILES!!!
The 09/10 are the best years for the 5.4 Over the past 4 years I've been buying oem parts for a future rebuild..but to date my 09 at 248k has only had brake pads and light bulbs replaced. I'd say that's pretty reliable
I just sold my 09 F150 crew cab. 190k miles and really the only thing I noticed was the top end noise. I was going to get new heads and keep it. I hauled horses with it all over the United States and it perfromed just fine.
For anyone interested, I just want to point out 2 problems with this video: First, the 5.0 may produce more horsepower and torque than the last year 5.4 but at significantly higher rpms making that extra power basically useless in everyday scenarios. The 5.4 produced 80% of it's torque below 3200 rpm, making it better suited for hauling/towing than the 5.0. That's why when you get a newer F150 with the max towing package you're forced to get the 3.5 EB. The second problem is that despite what the car fairy claims, the oil port size is not a problem. The oil pressure problems in the 3v 4.6/5.4 come from the flawed oil pump that Ford used in those years. The oil pump loses pressure under moderate rpms, starving the top of oil when it needs it the most.
Exactly. New oil pump and timing components and you have yourself a great powerplant. I have a 2011 expedition where these problems were corrected. Tows pretty good even with 3.11 gear ratio on 6spd. I might get 3.55s and add an 8.8" E-Locker. Keeping it forever.
It's not useless. People said same thing about the old Chevy 5.3 . I learned to just give it more pedal and you get your trailer to speed quicker. The 5.0 drivetrain actually gets it to the tires as better as well
@@calebmelton5989 I disagree. I stand by what I previously said. The 5.0 isn't as suitable for hauling/towing as the old 5.4 was. It has to work harder to move the same amount of weight. The newer 5.0s, of which I'm specifically talking about 2020+, make peak horsepower at 5750 rpm! And peak torque at 4500 rpm. Meanwhile, the old 5.4 made peak power at 5000 rpm and peak torque at 3500 rpm. That's a huge difference in power and torque delivery! Even if it didn't produce as much as the 5.0, it produced it much more quickly and at a lower rpm. While that might not seem like much of a difference, high revving engines don't have a very long lifespan. At least not when compared to lower revving engines that perform the same work.
Im the 2nd owner of my 2010. It's got 184k on it. The body isn't in great shape, but it has spent it's entire life in Wisconsin. Mechanically, it runs and drives very well. Everything works, it goes absolutely dead straight down the road too. It's honestly not a bad truck.
Spark plug blow out is a 2V problem only. The first couple years of the 3V had a problem with spark plugs getting stuck and breaking off during removal, but once the plugs were replaced, you were good to go. The Melling M340HV oil pump pretty much takes care of the oiling issues with these engines, but as you already pointed out, solid routine maintenance goes a long way. Good video.👌🏻
My 2010 F150 has been nearly perfect for me. I too have the 5.4l triton. I bought it with 35,000 miles back in 2014 and have owned it ever since. It was and is my first car and has been through a bit but I've always taken good care of it. Oil change every 3500 miles and I recently did the diffs and transfer case. I need to change the plugs soon, have a coolant flush and the transmission fluid changed (drop the pan). I am at 103,000 miles now on it which is relatively low miles but 50 percent of them have been towing anything from a 17 foot aluminum boat to my 21 foot fiberglass triton. The only issue I had with it was when I first bought it... It came from NY and had an exhaust leak at both exhaust manifolds. Whenever I had the mechanic try to change the manifolds, 4 or 5 of the bolts broke (a few rusted and broke on their own). So that was pretty expensive (around $2000) since he had to pull the engine, drill out the bolts and install the new manifolds and bolts. But otherwise the only other thing I have had to do to it was get new brakes and two sets of tires but those are more wear and tear items and not a fault of the truck. Hopefully she gets me through another 100,000 miles no problem. It does have the timing chain slap for around a second or less after it sits for a while and I do have a little ticking. I recently switched to 5w30 instead of the 5w20 oil since that is supposed to improve the longevity of these motors and the cam phasers. Also this truck has been great for me off road in hunting and fishing situations. And it is so comfortable that I would prefer it over a car for road trips. I do typically average around 14.5 mpg every day driving but I can squeeze out anywhere from 18-20 on the highway depending on the hills and how my right foot feels that day. I do have the 5 star tunes for my truck and have been running them since around 45,000 miles. It really wakes the truck up and majorly improves throttle response. It’s pretty dang quick for as large as it is. I have seen people who have reviewed this truck after the tune who have also drove a 5.0 and they said the tune definitely brings it to near or same as 5.0 acceleration. But of course the torque hits very low and makes this engine much better for towing.
Had the same issue with the slap at 95000 mikes and opened it up. The problem was the tensioner gaskets were blown out and starved oil to the cams. I did the whole timing job including new followers, cams, and used the previous gen ratcheting cast iron tensioners. Locked the phasers. Got the 5 star tune for it and put in the Melling HV oil pump. Runs great now and should last.
Well yes and no now adays its a mustang motor. Back in the day the 5.0 was a truck engine. Ford has a track record of taking truck engines and slapping them in sports cars ie ford gt. The mustang was originally meant to be a v6 as the og engine. The 5.4l is the 300 i6 of the modern day, slow, able to tow pretty much anything but getting a woping .6mph. Its a truck engine that does truck stuff and it does it good
I have the exact same truck except mine is a lariat. I've had it since 2016 and I love it. I'm getting very close to 150k miles and have had zero engine issues, I take good care of my truck and don't drive it super hard too often. It's pulled my boat all over the south and driven thru 2 feet of floodwaters. All in all, I wouldn't trade mine in for a rocket (but maybe for a 2021 F-150)
My Lariat 5.4L 2010 has 216,300 miles on it. Love the interior the Sony with 700Watt factory stereo. Love Leather seats. They are heavy. Excellent truck if you keep it up. My truck will rock and roll but governs out at around 110.
I recently purchased a 2009 King Ranch edition truck and I must say, it's absolutely beautiful! The ride is smooth and comfortable just like a Cadillac. Initially, there was a ticking sound, which turned out to be the exhaust manifolds issue that is common in the F150s. Despite having 200k miles, everything feels tight and well-maintained by the previous owner. I particularly love the 3v 5.4 engine. Comparing it to my previously owned 2017 truck with a 5.0 coyote engine, I can confidently say that the 5.4 has more low-end torque, which is great for towing. I plan on keeping this truck forever. If the engine fails I'll just drop another one in as these engines are readily available due to being in production for decades.
I had an 06 5.4 2 wheel drive XLT for 10 years and it was 13 at trade with 145k. ZERO mechanical or electrical issues EVER. Changed plugs twice none broke and I did the COPs myself once. Truck was never quieter and smoother than at trade for my 18. 🤘🏻🇺🇸
As an owner of 2007 5.4 who replaced the engine after only 140k miles, I can easily tell you that he’s absolutely right. Replacing the oil every 3k miles is key on these engines. Anything over that is risking failures on the cam phasers and timing chain and possibly more. Routine oil changes and regular maintenance will go a long way.
Amen, have a 04 f150, 3v 5.4, absolutely not ticking other than the exhaust manifolds, otherwise at 140k no issue, even my 06 at 180k doesn't have an issue, if I'm honest thr 04 actually hauls better than the 06
@@theshield1613 agreed, owned a first off the line, Jan of 06, 97 f150 with a 2v 4.6 and the engine is bulletproof, was my first truck in hs, and has been sitting a few years, has 252k and I guarantee with a new battery shed fire right up, never even had to plug it in when it was 30 below, it'd always start
Bought a 2008 Expedition EL Eddie Bauer new and had it for 11 years. Zero mechanical issues , only a few electrical issues and it had 92,000 miles on it when we traded it. We still miss “the limo” after two years but the wife wanted a 4 runner. 🙄
Cool video. I too don't understand all the crap the 5.4l gets. I have an 09 F150 Lariat with the 5.4l and 3.73 rear axle. I've only had one issue when I bought it new in 2009, and that was the passenger side exhaust manifold in 2018. Other than that.....zero...zip...nadda problems with 150,000 miles on it. I did get a custom 91 performance tune from 5 Star tuning and it was worth it. Took care of the shifting, throttle response, and performance. I also have a Banks intake system, throttle body spacer, and exhaust. This combination really woke the truck from it's slumber. I've had the tune on since 2012 and zero issues. Also, I only use 5W 30 oil in my 5.4l with a quart of Lucas Oil additive. This stops the ticking noise from the phasers and makes it purr like a kitten. The 5W20 is too thin for the engine. The United States is one of the only countries to use 5W20, all others use 5W30 in the 5.4l. I think Ford does this to make better MPG requirements only. I could be wrong, but it has worked for me over the last 12 years. I also tow a 7500-8000lbs travel trailer. I live in North Idaho, so most of the places I tow have steep grades at high elevation and the truck does fine. That being said, I would never tow over 8500lbs with any half-ton truck in the Mountainwest....period. It's not a power issue, it's a frame, axle, brakes, transmission, weight etc issue. Unless one likes having the trailer drive the truck or "the tail wag the dog." Admittedly, if one is a "flat lander" as we call them here, then the truck could handle a little more in flat areas near sea-level. I've been thinking about getting a new F150, but my truck has zero issues and is still in mint condition. I'd just hate to get rid of a perfectly good truck. Not to mention the insane prices for trucks these days! Anyway, sorry for rambling on, great video! It's nice to see a review which isn't a new truck that can back or park itself and has a 42 inch flat-screen in the dash.
I'm from Maine but just moved to South Dakota - never owned a truck but had a bit of cash and saw inflation coming so figured I should buy something and got a used 2010 Lariat with 69k miles - been watching a lot of videos and researching upgrades and things to do so I can maybe tow a smallish travel trailer. Thanks for the video
long oil change intervals are death for this engine family but it is important to realize that the early generations of three valve had timing chain tensioner gasket failure that caused huge oil starvation. The '09 was the benefactor of redesigned tensioners so that problem, along with redesigned spark plugs in mid 2008 and a head redesign in 2008 has made for much better reliability in those areas. The '09's were among one of the best years for tritons in the f-150 of all the year models with that engine. You can still get into trouble with low quality, wrong grade oil and or long intervals between oil changes.
My 5.4 is a 2004 first year of the 3 valve it has 373,000 miles on the original engine and transmission no mechanical problems ever I ran 10w-30 conventional since brand new
I have 2007 XLT Flare-side. 149,000 and still runs well. 2 biggest issues are REPLACED TOO MANY EXHAUST MANIFOLDS (5 times!) and quirky shifting around 45 mph or 1200 rpms. Other than that it still rides like new.
I still own a 2009 FX4 with approximately 150K miles I bought new in 2009. Best and most dependable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Truck still looks great interior and exterior. Mine has 5.4 triton. Has never had any major mechanical problems. Only thing done to truck in over 15 years was tires, one battery and religiously changing oil every 3K miles ( all normal maintenance). The only non-maintenance item I’ve had problems with over 15 years are brake low pressure sensors. I’ve replaced them and idiot light is on again. Other than poor low tire pressure sensors…. Zero problems. Keep oil changed every 3000 miles and this year 5.4 is a great and reliable engine.
I bought a 2012 Expedition King Ranch last November with 39,650 miles. It's now the end of December, 2023 and it has 46k miles. We'll drive it about 5k miles a year, so I'm changing the oil twice a year with Motorcraft 5W30 full synthetic and a Motorcraft filter.
I had a F150 King Ranch with 5.4L. It was a great truck. The MACHO man that had it before me had the oversize tires that made it drive like a log. I pulled those off and turned it into a great driving truck again. Big tires are tempting, but they sure can ruin your ride and your suspension.
I had a 06 f150 fx4 5.4lts for 6 years, bought it used from with more than 200k miles, never had 1 problem with the engine, the tranny went dead at 220k miles tho
I have a 08 350,000 miles i use Schafer synthetic oil and 8-10,000 miles between oil changes uses a quart of oil every 6,000 miles had to replace vct valves at 145,000 miles it’s a work truck and is loaded and I tow with it all the time. Been a great truck
I will add another positive comment about the 09 F150 5.4 Lariat. 2nd owner, fleet truck with questionable maintenance, 250 k mi when I bought it. Now with 260 k mi still runs great other than the occasional off-idle rattle which quickly goes away when I rev it. 15 mpg. Uses no oil. Very comfortable for my average size, nice ride, and powerful for my needs. My biggest complaint is the length and turning radius which makes it hard to park in many lots even with the backup camera.
5.4L 3V are great engines! I have seen some owners really good taking care of their 5.4L 3V and myself too with no issue over 200,000 miles with original cam phasers and timing chains system even old ford oil pump. We always change every 3,000 miles with Ford Motorcraft oil filter and 5W30 syth Blend to keep clean and lubricant much we can to keep these 5.4L 3V running last longer. We thought we have failure cam phaser because it was so loud so we took the test sound ear to cam phasers they are normal, fuel injection making these big noise lol😂.
FYI, down South, we use 10W-40 full synthetic oil in these engines. It prevents all of the known problems. A local dealership solved (100% solved) the 3V 5.4L warranty issues by doing this. I followed their guidance and at 200K miles, the truck has had zero engine issues, no oil consumption, no phaser knocking, no start up rattle, and no cam timing codes.
I’ve had a ‘09 S/crew FX4 Luxury edition 5.4 since factory ordering it new. It’s been a great truck however only has low miles at 65k much of which was pulling a 7000 lb. trailer. Over 13 years now I’ve changed the passenger side exhaust manifold, the a/c pump clutch, and when it was fairly new it had two cab leaks around the 3rd brake light and the satellite radio antenna. The engine is quiet with no ticks due to frequent oil changes always using Motorcraft check valve filters, for that matter all fluids throughout the vehicle have been changed faithfully. Last year I changed out the coil packs, injectors and idler pulleys for maintenance just because they were aging even though it probably didn’t need them. With all that said, would I ever consider buying a used one with no way to be sure how the previous owner(s) took care of the 5.4? Not on your life. However my truck is still as new and I’ve been payment free on it for many years now so this ‘09 F150 continues to be money in the bank to me.
I have a 5.4 3v 05 f150 only issue I had was an intermittent missfire on cylinder 3. Wouldn’t even toss code unless I got on gas hard. Swapped coils and plugs still had issue. Changed out roller followers (rocker arms) inspection looked fine but replaced anyway and it fixed problem. Exhaust gasket happened and had some start of frame rust easily stoped with Eastwood platinum rust encapsulator.
I have a 2010 FX4 same engine just hit 150K miles. It's been my daily commuter for 13 years. Just bought a 26ft RV a few months ago. It weighs about 7K lbs fully loaded and my truck pulls it just fine. The FX4 trim has 3.73 gearing which helps. I am interested in the new F150 Hybrid, almost double the performance. Its a shame new F150's cost so much these days or else I wouldve had one by now.
Awesome video! I have a 2010 f150 5.4L 4x4 here in Canada with 280K km's and for the most part I love it. Best year for the 5.4L was 09-10, mainly because ford fixed almost all the issues. No more shooting plugs, sticking them, badly designed components, etc. The only problems that the 09-10 had was those passenger side exhaust manifold (mine is bad), and Fords crappy weak oil pumps (as explained in the video), which lead to lifter tick and phaser knock/failure. You can get lucky with on-point oil changes and not abusing it. But if you get those symptom's you just upgrade all the timing parts (Phasers, VCT's, tensioners, guides, and maybe even lifters) and get the Milling Hight Volume oil pump. After the oil pump upgrade the engine will last forever. Also, what exhaust does the the truck have?
@@9ohfiver If you do it yourself it will be just under $1000 for everything. And if you take it to a shop it will vary even higher (shouldn't really be more than $3500)
@@9ohfiver No problem, when you test drive it just roll down the windows and listen. These trucks have naturally noisy injectors but if you hear anything besides that you may need to consider what's talked about above. If it has a check engine light make sure you get it read, if it is camshaft position related that engine will already need work.
I have 2008 Ford expedition 5.4 3 valve with 256700miles and it runs perfect thank God, I change oil every 3000 to 4000 miles with good oil. I only bought the truck 9 months ago six thousand miles on it. And I wonder if it's the original motor and trance is it runs too good, I'll take care of her she takes care of me.good truck
Still have a 2007 XLT SuperCab with 170k miles. Only spent $1500 on repairs so far. Amazing how well these things hold up. How’s the interior sound? Is it decently quiet? Mine seems loud inside the cab from highway wind noise. I trust it to keep me on the road.
200k on a 2006 5.4L. Worst cost was the spark plugs but other than that just belt and pulleys twice. 5k oil changes but a lot of rural driving and always keep the level up. Burns about a quart or so every oil change at this point. Now in the rusty but trusty category but still pulls and drives great in the snow with 3.55 positrac.
We sold our 1999 expedition to my step daughter and it's about 80 % original and still runs awesome just a cracked header and that stupid spark plug issue with them letting go we fixed the plugs and it's still kicking
Bought an 09 King Ranch 2 years ago with 99k miles. The previous owner/owners let the oil changes lapse, so a month after getting it, the engine died, cam phasers went and was a lot of sludge build up. Luckily I got an extended warranty, and after much bickering, the dealer replaced the engine for free with a rebuilt 86k mile engine. Change the oil!!!! Had the cab corners replaced too, terrible design. Runs great now, just normal maintenance, replacing worn parts as they come up. Rust is the main enemy now, Iowa winters ugh!
I have an ‘08 F-150 w/the 5.4 3V non flex fuel all original and had it since ‘14 with 60k miles and now it has 154k miles on it with the only things done to it are 1 brake job all 4 wheels, R&R spark plugs @ 115k miles, R&R L/F hub assembly, 1 set of tires and now it needs another set of tires due to needing rear shocks & front strut assembly also a starter and what I’m scared about it’s over due to drop the transmission pan and replace the filter with fresh fluid which at this point I’m about to put it for sale and just start fresh on another F-150 and probably a ‘21 model w/the 5.0L this time around. Oh ya the ‘08 I have is an SXT 2WD crew cab and a 6 ft. bed with leather interior and a great kick ass sound system.
5.4's like their oil changed regularly.. meaning every 3k miles.. yes, yes, I know most think 5k is the magic mile, but considering the lubrication issues and low oil pressure, change it every 3k and your engine will show you much love.
I have KO2s on my 2002 chevy. and watching this video, wondering if I could buy 16' Ford rims and use the KOs on the chevy. A mechnic yesterday told me I had to worry about the brakes. Just bought yesterday a 2009 F150 XLT ( 18' wheels) to replace my 2013 Lariat EcoBoost that was involved in a head collision. Miss my luxury truck, but the XLT drives great and was well taken care of..Also same color. But a lot of miles. Watching this video to convince myself that I made the right decision to buy it for $10000 I do put seats up in back and sleep diagonal on a pad..slept like a baby. That was a requirement for a truck after having this on the Lariat SuperCrew.
The early 5.4L was much more reliable in my opinion. I had a couple 2002 F-250s that each made it to about 250K miles and that was with hard towing everyday of its life. The only thing you have to worry about with those is the spark plugs blowing out which is not that bad once you figure out how to fix it. After they went to the 3 valve (2004?) that's when the real problems began. I bought a 2004 F-150 a few years ago because the older ones were so reliable. It only made it to 150k before the cams failed. The truck was not worth fixing. LOVE FOR THE WIZARD!
For sure, same with the 2V 4.6! Yeah I think they went 3V in early ‘05 with the release of the S197 mustang. The 2 valves were definitely more reliable, but unfortunately the trucks themselves weren’t built or designed as well prior to 2003. All hail THE WIZARD!! 👌🏼
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy The 2v 4.6L's are crazy reliable, I've seen a few F-150's 4.6L's that have over 400K on them and some old Ford crown vic Taxies in that range as well.
I have 2009 f150. 4.6 L 3valve its been a very reliable truck. Tows my 5500 lbs Rv trailer up grades of 8%. Still driving today and drive it till I die or it dies.
At the age of the truck you are reviewing the spark plugs are not an issue as they have probably been replaced by an updated design. As for the oiling issues the 04-08 were the worst ones the 09-10 were much better.
The oil passages are not the issue. Oil change intervals are the issue. Just think about it, if the passages were the issue many many engines would never make it past the warranty. None of the engines would make it past 200,000 miles. Very little if any oil would make it to the phasers at all. Regardless if the engine is new or old. You would have an engine tick on every motor. People tend to have cam phaser issues because they don't maintain them. But they do have issues with the chain tensioners blowing out giving them a start up rattle. These engines are very very picky when it comes to oil change intervals. 3,000-5,000 miles is a MUST.
use Shell Rotella 5w20 Truck Oil (Red Bottle) MOTORCRAFT oil filter and Shell V-Power for gasoline. Keeps the truck fresh and alive. Using expensive oil and gas is cheaper then buying an engine and transmission Also FORSCAN is cheap and can help with DTCs and unlock extra features
I’m bought mine repoed in 2005. I am at 280k all original except brakes, just now doing wheel bearings and control arms. Can corned from sunroof drain tube mistakes HAS THE TICK. I unplugged the vct system until I can fix it
I have a 2004 f150 with the 5.4 in it that i got almost brand new and it has over 300,000 miles on it and it hasn’t had very many issues except the spark plugs quit once but that was the only thing wrong with it.
Hi,we have a series of UTV and ATV ,Truck and Jeep aftermarket accessories, now we are looking for some people to evaluate the ford f150 led tail lights , are you interested?
Hey how’s it going? I’m planning on getting one of these but a 2010, any idea on it’s off-road capabilities. I know it’s not quite designed for it like the raptor or fx4 but the king ranch I’m looking at right now is a steal
What’s up Pat! 2010 is the best year for them. From what I understand, they are pretty decent at off-road! I’ve never done any trails that needed crazy articulation, but the traction has always been there for me. It helps how it has the limited slip diff in the rear, and always seems to send power to the correct wheel.
Agreed about the reliability, specially on the later years of the 3 valve engines that had a few design fixes done by then. My dad had a 2010 F150 with the smaller 4.6 3V V8. I remember last year we got very nervous because the exhaust manifold gaskets started leaking and the truck would exhibit a cold start knock for about 1-2 minutes. At first we thought it was going to be the timing chain guides but thankfully it wasn't. We ran a boroscope through the heads and everything was fine. Actually I noticed how clean everything was, no scoring on the camshafts, nor the roller followers, nor any traces of sludge. It all looked solid. Yes it needed the VCT solenoids replaced after 100K miles but we replaced those at home and the truck ran fine once again. My dad used that truck to haul materials when building his house and it never let him down. He sold it with 130K in it. We never got the exhaust manifolds fixed since the truck was mechanically sound and the expense was quite large , It was just the anoying cold start sound but that was pretty much it
Oh! Forgot to mention, the truck is at around 170,000 miles 👌🏼

I am thinking the same thing with mine you rebuilt confidence i was having second thoughts about the 5.4 engine but you sealed it off thank you.
Every engine loses power in the long run

I appreciate that a ton man, thank you so much 🙏🏼

Ford redesigned the heads to fit one-piece plugs for the 2009 model year which addressed the issue of the plugs breaking when you pull them out.
They also updated the cam phasers

The cam phasers aren’t the real problem. It’s the tensioner seals that blow.

The 09/10 are the best years for the 5.4
Over the past 4 years I've been buying oem parts for a future rebuild..but to date my 09 at 248k has only had brake pads and light bulbs replaced.
I'd say that's pretty reliable
I just sold my 09 F150 crew cab. 190k miles and really the only thing I noticed was the top end noise. I was going to get new heads and keep it. I hauled horses with it all over the United States and it perfromed just fine.
What would make the 11-13 worse than the 09/10
For anyone interested, I just want to point out 2 problems with this video:
First, the 5.0 may produce more horsepower and torque than the last year 5.4 but at significantly higher rpms making that extra power basically useless in everyday scenarios.
I've like a lot of things about the 5.4. One being the sound and another being the reliability.
Exactly. New oil pump and timing components and you have yourself a great powerplant. I have a 2011 expedition where these problems were corrected. Tows pretty good even with 3.11 gear ratio on 6spd. I might get 3.55s and add an 8.8" E-Locker. Keeping it forever.
You are correct sir. The 3000 to 3500 rmp mark is what I keep my truck at when towing uphill, it's the sweet spot!
Honestly I have a 2009 F150 XLT and it's been pretty damn reliable. Tows like a champ too...
The 5.4 was made to be a truck engine......the 5.0 was built for the mustang but changed to make it work for the F150.
yes sir!
Its a truck engine that does truck stuff and it does it good
And work it does! Great engine
The 5.0 efi in the old square bodies were the best. I love the 302.
The 5.4 isn't as bad as people say, it does have it's short comings but it is very intolerant of neglected maintenance

Thanks for the comment man! Glad you’ve had good luck with the truck.
I noticed an engine noise decrease when I switched to 5-30 synthetic.
The 5.4 is a super smooth sounding engine. Owning both engines the 5.4 is way quieter than the 5.0.
I loved the low end torque on the 5.4
I'm from Maine but just moved to South Dakota - never owned a truck but had a bit of cash and saw inflation coming so figured I should buy something and got a used 2010 Lariat with 69k miles - been watching a lot of videos and researching upgrades and things to do so I can maybe tow a smallish travel trailer.
My 5.4 is a 2004 first year of the 3 valve it has 373,000 miles on the original engine and transmission no mechanical problems ever I ran 10w-30 conventional since brand new
I like your style, very clear and professional. I wish there were more reviewers that put this much effort in.
I have 2007 XLT Flare-side. 149,000 and still runs well. 2 biggest issues are REPLACED TOO MANY EXHAUST MANIFOLDS (5 times!) and quirky shifting around 45 mph or 1200 rpms. Other than that it still rides like new.
I have a 2010 5.4 with 401000 still going strong maintenance is key
Call 5 star tuning and they'll have it running great. Lots of potential to unlock in these trucks.
06 with 94k, I'm glad to know it still has another 200k of life in it.
Why is everyone saying the triton engine is a terrible engine? That's all o ever hear about these engines
Ford is my favor car or truck, I had 95 Wind star, 98 Tourus, 00 F.150, 05 F 150 and 14 F 150. They are less repair super on the road.
The platinum actually has real brushed aluminum trim, it’s different than the regular silver plastic trim in the lower models.
my 2009 has 75100 on it. My 5.4 has been no problem. Lots of low end torque. I like the 3 valve.
I have the 2011 5.0. At 1:25 min it sounded real good when you started it
I’ve had a ‘09 S/crew FX4 Luxury edition 5.4 since factory ordering it new.
I’m at 159k
Are those expensive to get replaced?
@@9ohfiver If you do it yourself it will be just under $1000 for everything. And if you take it to a shop it will vary even higher (shouldn't really be more than $3500)
Thank you for that, I’m buying my first ford truck tomorrow and was just worried about repairing the cam phasers.
Ironic that the only ones that say ford sucks are the ones that never owned one!!!!
I've had plenty of fords always have problems with them. I upgraded to ram years ago with zero issues.
@@fireant1272 says no one but you Fords superior to Ram or is it Fiat who knows
@@johnhill9910 honestly everyone has their preference. Some people have more luck with other brands
I got 208,000k on my 2009 5.4 with the right amount of love it gets me around just fine
We sold our 1999 expedition to my step daughter and it's about 80 % original and still runs awesome just a cracked header and that stupid spark plug issue with them letting go we fixed the plugs and it's still kicking
Very informative! Loving the new segments to! You should do a "how's the acoustics" section!
Thanks Ross 👌🏼 and when you say “acoustics”, do you mean like how does the sound system sound?
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy sure! But more give me you playing guitar.
9:37 is the BEST and most ridiculous statement I have EVER heard... "But, the issue resolves itself when the weather warms up.." LoL!!!
5.4's like their oil changed regularly.. meaning every 3k miles.. yes, yes, I know most think 5k is the magic mile, but considering the lubrication issues and low oil pressure, change it every 3k and your engine will show you much love.
you can do 5K as long as you use good quality 5W-20 oil and of course a Motorcraft oil filter. Nothing else
@@MrLuisinho90 thats correct. I use Shell Rotella 5w20 Truck Oil (Red Bottle) expensive but worth it
Quality review mang!
Ayyye, thanks Mike!
You’re going to have a group of angry Mitsubishi owners outside of your house lmao
I’m cool with it 😂
Great video! Glad to know you're also a Carwizard fan
Thanks Dillon👌🏼 I love Hoovie’s garage, and therefor Wizard by association
That fit change going into the truck got me for a second! 😂😂
🤠
Good review, liked the bit of levity too😉
The early 5.4L was much more reliable in my opinion.
Lol just spark plugs blowing out, not a big issue, it's not like it's something that's been done for 100s of years.
@@jonathangarzon2798 he said the older trucks lasted longer and the only problem was the spark plugs
What about the 5.4 in the 08 trucks?
Mine has 180k miles always load it up with cement and does great
Well the automatic running boards still work, so there’s a plus.
I have 2009 f150. 4.6 L 3valve its been a very reliable truck. Tows my 5500 lbs Rv trailer up grades of 8%. Still driving today and drive it till I die or it dies.
How many miles
Now on the truck
If an aftermarket company made aluminum door for this truck it would be perfect!
At the age of the truck you are reviewing the spark plugs are not an issue as they have probably been replaced by an updated design. As for the oiling issues the 04-08 were the worst ones the 09-10 were much better.
well done, dude! how long have you been doing these?
The oil passages are not the issue. Oil change intervals are the issue. Just think about it, if the passages were the issue many many engines would never make it past the warranty. None of the engines would make it past 200,000 miles. Very little if any oil would make it to the phasers at all. Regardless if the engine is new or old. You would have an engine tick on every motor. People tend to have cam phaser issues because they don't maintain them. But they do have issues with the chain tensioners blowing out giving them a start up rattle. These engines are very very picky when it comes to oil change intervals. 3,000-5,000 miles is a MUST.
Have a 2009 f150 platinum tow a 3500 car trailer around all day and loaded usually around 8.5 to 9,000 pounds no issues at all love it
This is the comment I needed to see. lol. I’m looking at a 09 platinum right now and my camper weighs 8,599 lbs lol. So thank you
Update on the truck???
I just bought one with 36k miles for 15k. Near mint condition but I intend to upgrade the lights and audio
I own a 2009 F150 SCREW, 6.5 bed, I'm 6'7" tall and could comfortably sleep anywhere in my truck
Loved the video once again!!
Thank you so much!! ✌🏼
I have a 2010 f150 lariat 5.4 w tow pkg. love it.
use Shell Rotella 5w20 Truck Oil (Red Bottle) MOTORCRAFT oil filter and Shell V-Power for gasoline. Keeps the truck fresh and alive.
Using expensive oil and gas is cheaper then buying an engine and transmission
Also FORSCAN is cheap and can help with DTCs and unlock extra features
I seriously need to buy this truck
I have 104,000 on my 2004. Bad on exhaust manifolds. Other than that, it runs fine. I change my oil every 3,000 miles.
Nice video. I've had nothing but the highest reliability from all my fords. Nice video.
Thank you! Glad you’ve had good luck
Is it still holding up good 3 years later?
My 2003 just hit 300k and runs and drives perfect nothing but normal maintenance
Great review...Earned a sub!
Thanks dude!! 🤙🏼
I drive an outlander and the rear view cam is crystal clear
We never got the exhaust manifolds fixed since the truck was mechanically sound and the expense was quite large , It was just the anoying cold start sound but that was pretty much it
Country Matt is a LOOK!!!
Is it a vibe or what 😉😏
