Toyota 4Runner FRAME SWAP (Headers/Exhaust, 3" Lift and New Frame) 4th Gen V8 Rusty & Rotted
You know the Toyota frame recall/warranty? Yeah, the 4Runners were never covered under that, so 4th gen 4runner and GX470 owners are left to fend for themselves when it comes to either frame rust repair or frame replacement. Here's the kicker: the frames are now DISCONTINUED, so salvage frames are becoming more of a hot commodity.
In this video, we find a clean salvage RWD V6 frame and convert it to a 4WD V8 frame.
We also throw on some Doug Thorley Catless Long Tube Headers on the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8, as well as a 3" Rough Country lift and some other goodies.

Updates on the Xterra: the rear differential had a LOT of metal stuck to the drain plug magnet. The transfer case and front diff were similar, but not quite as bad. It can be HELL purging air from hydraulic brake lines on Ravs. ABS is always the unseen factor.
Been dreaming of this car. It's officially off my short-list
picked up a 08 manual 4 door with 200k for 50$ been daily driving it for years now.
What's a " REFLASH " ?
2 valve plugs pop out
thanks for the help cant wait for the snow
It would nice to see before and after pictures of the valves
Before purchasing a Q7 older than 5 years, please ask yourself: 1 Are you a good technician? 2. Do you know a good repair shop of European cars? When I say a good repair shop, it should not be a Audi dealer. If both answers are No, skip it.
I always believed this 5.4 engine runs smoother than the 5.0
98 accords are very reliable
Sucks this one was scrapped. $600 good running junkyard engine, all new sensors, gaskets and seals, new exhaust system and a better condition rear diff with better clutch pack, and this would’ve been a comfy daily driver/off-roader
This jeep was just neglected. I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition with 194K miles. Original V8 5.7L HEMI engine, flawless interior, and no body/chassis issues AT ALL! The only issue I agree with is the transmission, seems that they are projected to fail in this model. My transmission was replaced twice, once with previous owner, and once with me. Luckily I found one with only 60K miles on it, so with some routine maintenance hopefully I will get around 60-80K out of it. Great video, thanks for taking the time to review this Jeep!
You don’t buy this for for gas mileage. 15-18 mpg is fine with me. I’ll buy a crossover if I want gas mileage. I’ll take not the best mileage for reliability any day
I have an 09 and absolutely love it the gas mileage is my only real problem I did encounter smod but caught it in time and that's fixed got it with 111,000 miles 3 yrs later I have 196,000 miles and sounds and drives like new 3 days after I got it went off roading and love it been doing alot of off roading it does burn alot of coolant and oil
thank you.....
This is called the shot gun approach 😊
These cars are great in many aspects , space , reliable , v etc , good quality parts , lots of aftermarket support , very high potential motor with a turbo and a tune full bolt ons your easily over 300hp . I know someone personally that has an accord and with a turbo and tune he’s pushing close to 400 hp if not about that much , and the fact that it doesn’t come with a lsd 6 speed transmission is ok because you can literally get a civic si transmission from a 2012-2015 and you’ll have an lsd 6 speed transmission because it easily bolts up to the k24z3
Man you just helped me figure out why I have a ticking sound in my 08 civic when I drive and park, to go into the store I hear a ticking sound.. thanks!
Awesome! Glad to hear it
I really like the cars, the only thing i dislike is the rear barn door with wheel mounted on it..
We have a 2011 RAV4 2.5l as well. It has 150k and ever since we got it at 110k miles there has been a whooing noise when accelerating only and when going under 30mph.
Looking forward to owning one of these 🫡
2010 accord coupe, 465,000kms. 2 wheel bearings, both rear calipers have been the only unusual repairs, but with the mileage, they probably just wore out.
2013 GTI with 160,000 mi. No problems except fuel gauge went intermittent then dead. Any suggestions out there? Thanks! Jim, San Diego
the two lights come on when you set your bright lights on.
You do a great job with this video with thoughtful explanations about this gen of Accord. Due to exactly what you said about general maintenance (or lack of), I bought a car with a worn out K24 engine. I picked up a low mileage K24A from JDM Source in Calgary (who imported it from near Tokyo) and it has 65-80,000km (say 40,000 miles). The Japan sourced engine horsepower is bumped up to 203 from 190 in the Canadian model. This week and weekend - I am in the process of taking out the old engine and in with the new. It always takes me longer than expected but I hope to run this car for the next 20 years. Proof, I have a Honda Ridgeline that I bought used in 2008 and it is still running strong and could run for 10 more years.
That’s always the case with repairs haha, they take about 2x the time that we originally estimate. Thank you and good luck with yours!
I have a 07. Big pos. Lol
Visibility is NOT great in the Sequoia, we have a 2014. You cannot see out the right rear window because of the 2nd row headrest!! Our old Suburban is perfect!
Mine had a small leak in a heater hose. I could not see it and didn't notice until cold weather came and the heater would not put out heat. 207 Offroad, now 209000. Nothing major. Several Ujoints.
My 2012 hasn't been too bad and now has 180K+ miles on it. Problems have been 4wd U-joints, brakes wear out very fast, some parts rusting out. Very practical but the 4wd is useless due to speed constraints. Next car will be Subaru Outback or Forester.
I actually love this car review video! 😂😂😂
Ive had an xterra for about 3 days now, already one of the best vehicles ive ever owned, if this one got totaled today is probably get another one tomorrow lol
This is gonna be an endeavor I'm gonna have to eventually face. Where did you find the frame? I've had no luck finding a place to get one
I found my frame on eBay. But I would look at Car-Part.com. Keep an eye out for GX470 frames as well.
I was driving my 2012 toyota rav4 on the hwy at 75mph. The belt tensioner came apart and the belt came off leaving us on the side of the hwy. I replaced the belt tensioner and belt and tried to start. Strong starter but it would not start. I had to get it towed. I heard from the dealership that cylinded one had zero compression and i would need a new $8800 engine. So much for toyota reliability. The car had 130k miles on it.
That’s a bummer. I’m not sure what went wrong with yours specifically. It could have been starved of oil at some point in its life.
Jwitz?
I had an 05 with the v-8. Got it in 2010, thought I’d have it forever until the frame rusted and made it unsafe to drive. I guess mine came from a salty area. What a great truck tho. I only had 266,000 miles on it. Just needed routine maintenance, I never saw a drop or oil anywhere. Still got $2500 for it. Have a 2019 now,I miss the rumble of a v-8 but for daily driving the 6 is more than capable.
Dang, that’s a bummer about the frame, but 266k miles is still a great run! The frame on this one was actually way worse than I originally thought. Check out one of my recent videos- we frame swapped it.
Im thinking about picking ip an 04 eith 122k miles
Dude you prolly just need a new radiator cap 🤦♂️
It was a leak at the heater core. 🤦🏼♂️
La mia golf gti mk7 del 2016 ha anche l'iniezione a porta inseme a quella diretta,sulla 7,5 l'hanno tolta...😮
About to go test drive a 2009 RAV4 LTD v6 with 83k miles on it for only $11k
Good luck, let me know how it goes!
This is my back up vehicle and it’s got 130k miles I have had no issues. It does great in the snow and actually tows really good to. All around a pretty good mid size suv. Feels small to my family they say, but they are use to their 2024 GMC Yukon LX.
I bought a 2011 RAV4 for $6,500 in 2020. It had 175,000 miles on it and is still running at 225,000 miles. The only repairs I've had were replacing the wheel rotors in 2020, the starter in 2021, the tensioner in 2022, the radiator fan, both front suspensions, axles, sway bars, wheel bearings, coils, and spark plugs in 2024. I did all the repairs myself except for the belt tensioner. Not bad for an amateur TH-cam mechanic.
I'm def buying this vehicle. They look super nice and decently priced
So now your "new" frame is totally packed with mud and can start it's rotting process! Yeah, I know, you treated the inside with fluid film, I hope that works for you. I am doing the same to mine, (an '03 Limited V8) only I don't off road, so I have a better shot at it lasting as it too has some rust issues.
Sort of a disheartening comment dude. You think I just left the mud in there after? That would be incredibly dumb. These things were designed to explore and go off road. There’s plenty of examples where people take theirs in the mud, dirt, fresh water, sand… but they don’t live in the rust belt where road salts are used, and their 4Runners are in perfect shape. It’s all about how you clean it afterwards.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Didn't mean to be disheartening! Just pulling your chain a little. It would be nice if Toyota had put a "cleanout port" on this frame, they put enough other holes in it for some reason. Enjoyed your video by the way, nice job!!
343k miles on my accord. Only issue is VCM which is apparently out of warranty. American honda policy is garbage. Car is great if you do basic care. Aside from the eventual failing vcm system which causes fouled plugs, bad motor mounts, etc. And a lifter tick. Thats it.
It’s a shame they don’t cover that VCM stuff under warranty for longer. But good on you for 343k! Maybe try a valve adjustment
Try a vcm muzzler. I have one installed on my 2011. Now it's driving better using all 6cyl all the time. No eco light.
@NotSoHandyCarGuy did that not too long ago. Has ran better since, but fouling plugs every few days in the back cylinders. Could be spark plug tube seals but check engine is ALWAYS followed by eco light. So the process is involved with my fouled plugs for sure. Also changed PC valve a while back which helped a lot also.
@Rahul-ty7fb I want to get VCM 2 or Muzzler 2, can't remember the name. But it's 200 bucks shipped from Canada. Which one did you get? And do we have the same model/similar engine? I have a 3.5l v6
Bought one ,for £800, 140k ,on clock, 2, 20litres MINT

"...the cheapest interior from a Japanese car..." Xterra is not a Japanese car. Wikipedia: It was developed in La Jolla, California, by Nissan Design International (NDI)'s (now Nissan Design America) then Director of Design Tom Semple, and became the first Nissan vehicle completely conceived, developed and manufactured in the United States.
That’s true. However, Nissan is still a Japanese company. Similar to saying the Tundra is a Japanese truck, even though it’s designed and assembled in the U.S. Pretty much every auto manufacturer is global at this point. Nissan has their name on it. They have final say. So it’s a Japanese vehicle.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Not really.
@@sergiyg2537 oh ok, well now that you put it that way…
Scotty Kilmer said to check if your 4Runner was build in Japan, if so he indicated that the frames don't rust.
I’ve learned to not trust Scotty Kilmer as much anymore. For example, this one was built in Japan and it absolutely rotted beyond repair. I wonder if he specified which generation 4Runner though?
All of them are built in Japan lol
