I'm so sorry this happened to you, Katey. Betrayed by the only people in the world who were supposed to be protecting you unconditionally and trying to make sense of it as a child. As adults, we say "get out and make yourself a new family of people you can trust" but a 5 year old just asks "Why me? What did I do?" while others just think this is normal. I'm glad the actual molestation is behind you but eternal years of healing will always be in front of you. When I woke up and realised what was going on, I said "Everything that happened can't be changed from from today on, I'm going to make sure it never happens again."

Wow, this could've been me talking as I have a similar story: teenaged uncle molested me at age 5, was a secret for years, when it finally came out nobody did anything, he was never made accountable in any way shape or form, even though everyone believed me.
This is because the generational passing down of SA was so prevalent in all my female relatives, my age and older, that nobody, not even the men, had any clue how to address it or acknowledge it, much less prevent it from happening again. It was just one of those bad things that happened to girls, and you just moved on.
I'm fairly certain that my uncle was SA'd by someone else as a young boy. I don't think that absolves him, a 15 yr old who should've known better, but it makes me sort of blase about the whole thing. Hurt people hurt people, so who is ultimately to blame, and what can you do about it now anyway?
I did what Katey did and vowed to break the cycle. Family, especially in-laws with no experience or frame of reference for family molestation, think I'm paranoid and over-vigilant with my child. But f*ck that, at least I do what I can to protect my kid. All that experience being SA'd, and watching other female relatives live with the trauma of family SA, I learned many lessons on how it might be avoided or detected.
Stay vigilant sisters. Much love and support to all who shared similar stories!

This, unfortunately, is extremely common. My uncle molested my sister, and I believe he was molested by my great grandfather. I never knew, because they always got along well as I grew up, and even know he’s closer to her than her other siblings. I think she forgave him, because again… I never knew. When I found out, I was stunned, and a little grossed out because he’d been my favorite uncle. Now I still love him, and I try to think about my mom forgiving him, but that thought is always in the back of my head.

Fathers, Grandfathers, Uncles, Brothers and then there always seem to me the friend and or the neighbor man..Insane how many infant, toddler and children are sexually abuse ..We must tell teach all our children immediately about inappropriate touch and even about the threats someone may use for silencing. And we also need to talk to the boys immediately ( early as can ) how that behavior is violence

I'm afraid this happened to my daughter when she was very young, by her paternal grandfather or uncle. I left and moved 1500 miles away to raise her alone because I could feel something wasn't right. I've asked her if anyone ever did something like that to her and she says no but not knowing for sure kills me.

My uncle raped me from age 2 till age 10.. my family knew he was suspected of molesting his own grandchildren, & I will say my mom had social services come in with the dolls & stuff asking if I was touched here or there, but I was groomed so well, I lied.. but when I was 10, my grandpa who basically raised me part time ( just like her I lived 2 house from my grandparents & just like her, they raised me half the time) was sick w/ cancer, & this disgusting jackass was trying to rape me while my granddad was in coughing spasms in the living room, I said my Pop needs me & ran out of the house to my moms house & broke down & told her everything.

these testimonials are so important, but you guys bleep so many words - "alcoholic", "sex", "antidepressants" - it materially erodes the intelligibility of the account. Not only that, it's a slight to your guests, who have in many cases struggled to overcome taboos to tell their stories.

Just learned my husbands nephew who is 22 now, back when he was 16/17 SA’d his little 11 year old male cousin & his 12 year old younger sister. He rents a room in our house but I only found out about it a few weeks ago. He denied it until there was proof. Then he told partial truths, to make it seem not so bad - ITS BAD ANY WAY U CUT IT!! The sister said he would want to play “house” where’s she’s the mom and he’s the dad. These are SICK PEOPLE!
Now, to our knowledge, and according to him - his older cousin female cousin would pretend to be his gf (he was 14-15. She was 16/17 - although I feel they were closer in age, it still wasn’t ok and any sexual behavior within families isn’t ok either).
Not sure I believed him completely about her either, but it’s possible.
Then, my husband is a sex addict who tongued down his cousin on more than 1 occasion as a teen & as an adult, she’s 11 yrs younger than him. He was SA’d by a lot of different men as a young 6 year old boy through his adolescence. His father SA’d his own daughter. IT IS GENERATIONAL TRAUMA!!! Something has to give you guys. This is so damn prevalent anymore it’s the most helpless feeling ever!! 😢

When my mom died I was raised by my aunt and her husband (uncle in law). He sexually assaulted my sister and I and our family disowned us so we got him charged and they lost their house to pay for legal fees. Now they are separated and my aunt says it's a bunch of bullshit and that she holds her head up high.
